Similar to last year’s The Social Network, Middle Men offers another online phenomenon (this time the rise of internet porn) as the basis for a tale of greed, deception and the vast financial rewards to be reaped from it all (all at the cost of everything else, of course).
It’s a sprightly, if derivative yarn which, seemingly due to studio politics, is making its debut in the usually quality-bereft Dtv world. While not quite up there with the David Fincher’s aforementioned zeitgeist-encapsulating audience and critic favourite, it’s certainly worthy of a big-screen release and well worth a viewing.
Set in the early noughties, a beefed-up Luke Wilson stars as devoted family man and astute business advisor, Jack Harris. Following a string of successful ventures he’s spearheaded, he is offered the chance to help a couple of .com entrepreneurs who have inadvertently launched the first pay-per-view online porn site.

Middle Men
Stars: Luke WIlson, Giovanni Ribisi, Gabriel Macht, James Caan, Kevin Pollak | Written by George Gallo, Andy Weiss | Directed by George Gallo
Essentially Boogie Nights for the internet generation, Middle Men is based on the true story of Christopher Mallick, who here serves as a producer on the film. Taking a very Scorsese-esque slant, the film follows Jack Harris, played by Luke Wilson, who has made a name for himself in more comedic roles in recent years, but here he returns to the more dramatic role and is all the better for it – Wilson should really take more serious roles like this in future. Harris is a family man with a successful career and an idyllic life, who through a series of friend-of-a-friend favours manages to get involved with two would-be geniuses, Buck Dolby (what a name!) and Wayne Beering, played by Macht and Ribisi respectively, who, in a moment of financial frustration,...

In Match Cuts, we examine every available version of a film, and decide once and for all which is the one, definitive cut worth watching. This week, in honor of John Carpenter's new film "The Ward," we're looking at his very first film: "Dark Star."
Editions:
-Original Movie Cut (1974): 68 minutes
-Theatrical Cut (1975): 83 minutes
The Story:
The four-man crew of the spaceship Dark Star is twenty years into their mission to locate and destroy unstable planets that pose a threat to future Earth colonies. The spacemen, led by Lt. Doolittle (Brian Narelle), dump bombs on the unstable planets then blast away at hyperspeed before they explode. Their lives between detonations are boring and tedious; the crew is so disengaged and disinterested in their jobs that they barely notice that Dark Star has been damaged in an asteroid storm, and that the malfunction could have disastrous consequences for their next bombing run.

A gripping documentary tells the story of the journey of John Carpenter's film school project into the ranks of cult classics
In the film world, the approach of the Cannes film festival is what's on everyone's mind. But before that happens, if you're in the area, it's well worth dropping in on Sci-Fi-London that is, the London international festival of science fiction and fantastic film. And the high point could turn out to be the documentary Let There Be Light: The Odyssey Of Dark Star, by Daniel Griffith, which is being shown on Saturday week. Appropriately for its subject matter, this documentary looks a little bit cheap and cheerful sometimes, but for anyone who loves John Carpenter's 1974 cult classic it really is gripping — for a number of reasons. Dark Star was the film that started life as Carpenter's graduation project at the University of Southern California film school.

When I think about the concept behind Middle Men, I’m reminded of the Mr. Show sketch about turning a coupon into a movie; “People love the coupon, they’ll love the movie.” With Middle Men, taking a subject that most men hold dear (usually in their left hand, for logistical reasons), the porn industry receives a similar treatment. People love internet porn; surely they’ll love a movie about internet porn. And so it goes. Middle Men recounts the story of the first men to monetize online porn and the perilous road they took in going from a project in a dingy apartment to a booming industry with a technology that could become increasingly lucrative in an internet saturated age. It’s equal parts comedy and drama, but more often than not it fails to be either and only manages to tell a somewhat interesting story. A note for future filmmakers: breasts,...

Inspired by a true story and featuring an all-star cast, Middle Men has arrived on Blu-ray from Paramount Home Entertainment and M&C.s giving away four copies! Described as .Boogie Nights meets Goodfellas. (Variety), the engrossing film about an ordinary businessman who becomes embroiled in a dark and dangerous world of questionable morals and organized crime during the early days of the World Wide Web is almost too bizarre and too hilarious to be true. Luke Wilson (Old School) stars as Jack Harris, a man with a beautiful family, a successful career and an idyllic life. That is, until he gets involved with two troubled geniuses (Giovanni Ribisi, Avatar; Gabriel Macht, The Spirit) who need business advice on getting...

Inspired by a true story about the birth of Internet pornography in the ’90s, George Gallo’s Middle Men entices with its sexy subject matter, but disappoints with its uneven execution.
Inconsistencies in tone, pacing and style subtract from the film’s inherent charm and refreshing honesty. Themes of guilt and America’s repressed sexuality are lost in the chaotic, rags-to-riches story of two idiots who invent the means to monetize porn and the savvy entrepreneur who harnessed that potential during the web’s infancy.
Following the formula of other unsavory profession stories, particularly Blow, the film relies on the overuse of voice-over by star Luke Wilson to connect the dots of its unnecessarily non-linear plot. The constant commentary is a lazy technique that distances the audience from its only main character, a Texas businessman named Jack Harris who doesn’t show his emotions so much as over-explain them.

Do you read Maxim magazine? Because I used to. Once in a while, I'll flip through, and remind myself what it is about the rag that I don't find appealing anymore. The articles are occasionally pretty good, and there are moments where you just kind of laugh and enjoy. But everything else just reminds you it's a PG-13 Playboy. It's as if a teenager told his clever mother he only reads the skin mag for the articles, so she goes through with a whiteout brush and draws modest one-piece bathing suits on the spreads and then lets him read it. It's a disappointment. Such is the case with Middle Men, which chronicles the development of 24/7 Billing, which acted as the fingercuffs between the online porn distributors and the horny husbands who wanted to whack it to Lusty Busty Asians in the comfort of their own dens. With the doors locked.

Paramount has released a series of new clips for Middle Men, the "true story" of "the guys who brought XXX to the www." Inspired by producer Christopher Mallick's life, the movie follows businessman Jack Harris (played by Luke Wilson), a stable family man who goes into business with Wayne Beering and Buck Dolby (Giovanni Ribisi and Gabriel Macht), two troubled geniuses who invented the way that pornography is sold over the Internet. While navigating his way through porn stars, Russian mobsters, and the FBI, Harris' new venture makes him one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs of all time, proving that "business is a lot like sex: getting in is easy, pulling out is hard.

ComingSoon.net talked exclusively to Luke Wilson, Giovanni Ribisi and Gabriel Macht about starring in George Gallo's Middle Men . You can watch the video interviews using the player below! The movie, now playing in limited theaters, centers on businessman Jack Harris (Wilson), who in 1995 has the perfect life - a beautiful family and a successful career fixing problem companies. And then he met Wayne Beering (Ribisi) and Buck Dolby (Macht), two genius but troubled men, who had invented the way adult entertainment is sold over the internet. When Jack agrees to help steer their business, he soon finds himself caught between a 23 year-old porn star and the FBI all the while becoming one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs of his time.

"Let's focus on why we're here," is the refrain Jack Harris (Luke Wilson) uses to soothe a parade of thugs in Middle Men. Jack is half conflict-resolution consultant, half cleaner, and the only thing he'll admit to doing all the way is the job at hand, which involves fixing broken -- and usually shady -- deals. If it were just a little bit more fun watching this Internet-age crime caper, Jack's smooth-operator refrain might have become a sort of mordant catchphrase. Instead it's a grim reminder of the narrative incoherence that drags this well-acted and often lively movie down.

Title: Middle Men Directed by: George Gallo Nudity, drugs and several big-name stars in a film “inspired by true events.” While normally these three things are the perfect combination for a big summer hit movie, the new film ‘Middle Men,’ starring Luke Wilson, Giovanni Ribisi, James Caan and Kevin Pollak, falls short on its promises to deliver box office success. Even though marketed as being based on the experiences of producer Christopher Mallick, potential audiences weren’t told much else about the limited-release movie in advance, and will likely forget about as quickly as they forget his name. ‘Middle Man’ follows a mid-1990s businessman, Jack Harris (played by Wilson), who agrees to help a [...]...

In 1995, an entirely different paradigm existed. Beneath every TV was a Vcr; music was available only in stores; and the World Wide Web, accessible primarily through dial-up modems, began its assault on the masses. As with nearly every other popular medium, the burgeoning Internet looked to pornography for the development of the needed revenue streams. With the middling “Middle Men,” director George Gallo (“Homeland Security”) recounts the wild story behind the men who spawned the online financial revolution.
Businessman Jack Harris (Luke Wilson) fixes problem companies. Disreputable lawyer Jerry Haggerty (James Caan) summons Jack to help Wayne Beering (Giovanni Ribisi) and Buck Dolby (Gabriel Macht), the geniuses who invented a way to use credit cards via the Internet. The pair quickly become wealthy by selling pornography. Needing original content, the duo establish a relationship with a Russian gangster (Rade Serbedzija), which quickly sours. Jack agrees to steer their business and clean up the messes.

On paper, Middle Men, directed by Bad Boys and Code Name: The Cleaner screenwriter George Gallo, is a fascinating (and purportedly true) story about the frontier days of the Internet. A string of fortunate events finds Jack Harris (Luke Wilson), a wholesome entrepreneur from Texas, coming to the aid of Wayne Beering (Giovanni Ribisi) and Buck Dolby (Gabriel Macht). These two geniuses have designed a revolutionary way to sell people pornography over the Internet simply by being the middle men who push a string of credit card numbers from one place to another. They become multi-millionaires in a matter of weeks.
Trouble is these two geniuses are actually complete morons and therefore Jack steps in to partner with the dysfunctional duo. Sorting out their business woes amidst their own clashing personalities is the least of Jack's worries, though, since the duo has also entered a partnership with a Russian gangster,...

I rarely think of myself as a techie geek -- I don't feel knowledgable enough about programming to quality. I'm not normally an early adopter. I don't have Linux installed on any of my computers ... okay, except for the household media computer and my husband did that. The point is, I'm as surprised as anyone that I felt Middle Men didn't deliver enough techie storyline, instead relying on mundane plot elements like kidnapping, wild Vegas escapades, drug-addled geniuses and Mob-owned strip clubs. Maybe the trailer was trying to invoke the same vibe as The Social Network to draw in the geeks, who might be fascinated by a story of bizarre Internet success based on real life ... but I felt misled and disappointed.
Middle Men is about a trio of gentlemen who more or less accidentally jump-start the online porn industry in the late 1990s by creating billing services for websites.

Duffel bags of cash. Dumping bodies at sea. Women as commodities and lots of tits and asses wriggling in his face. It’s just another day at the office for Jack Harris. His story -- which is so loosely based on fact, as the multiply caveated disclaimer at the end of Middle Men indicates, that it might as well be fiction -- is kinda the reverse of GoodFellas: Ever since he was a kid, Harris never wanted to be a pornographer or to go in business with the Russian mob: it just sort of happened. Putting porn on the Internet was a no-brainer: Masturbating millions wanted the stuff and were eager to pay for their solitary pleasures. The problem was how to separate these lonely souls from their money digitally.
According to "Middle Men," a new movie "inspired by a true story," this problem was solved by Wayne Beering (Giovanni Ribisi) and Buck Dolby (Gabriel Macht), two over-wound young L.A. hustlers who in 1997 created a computer program to enable online credit-card payments, and then, in a further refinement, hatched the idea of anonymous billing, so that instead of your wife or whoever coming across a credit-card charge from, say, "Milf Wagon Productions," all she would see would be a payment to, say, "24/7 Billing Company." This allowed Wayne and Buck to operate, not as actual pornographers, but...

If you.ve been reading my interviews with the cast of Middle Men, you should have an idea who Christopher Mallick is. Without him, the movie wouldn.t exist, and I don.t just mean because he is the film.s producer. Mallick is, in fact, the man that the film is about, Luke Wilson playing Mallick under the name Jack Harris. If you.re doing your math correctly (and I sure hope you are), you.ve figured out that Mallick is also the man responsible for the birth of internet porn. Feel free to leave your thank yous in the comments section. Sitting down with George Gallo, perhaps best known for writing both Midnight Run and Bad Boys, the pair discussed developing the story as a feature film, avoiding the .porn movie. label and an incident where Giovanni Ribisi gets body slammed. It.s all waiting for you below.

HollywoodNews.com: Not many producer-financiers make movies about themselves, especially early in their career.
However, Christopher Mallick, whose film “Middle Men” opens tomorrow, has lived such a topsy-turvy life filled with mobsters and X-rated actresses, he can only wish it was fictitious.
Mallick, a Texas entrepreneur, was at the forefront of the adult entertainment industry’s explosion on the internet, minting millions as a billing middle party. Leaving his seedy past behind, Mallick divulged his story to “Bad Boys” scribe George Gallo.
“Middle Men” tells the story of two Los Angeles-based loose cannons played by Giovanni Ribisi and Gabriel Macht who hatch the idea of launching the internet’s first adult entertainment website. The million-dollar venture becomes too unwieldy for them to handle and a straight-laced businessman played by Luke Wilson steps in to shepherd the operation, ultimately making the website a billing party to several portals.

Middle Men is a film that harkens back to the days when cinema was truly original. It’s a gritty story full of witty dialogue, fast camera work and compelling characters while examining a subject that is both taboo and universal: Internet pornography.
The story is based on the real life story of producer Christopher Mallick, who became entwined in the burgeoning Internet culture and the commerce possibilities that spawned from it in the late ’90s. Directed with the confidence of an established auteur, George Gallo (Trapped in Paradise, Midnight Run) mixes humor and action with a distinctive style and an impressive ensemble cast. To draw the inevitable comparison, Middle Men is the Boogie Nights of internet porn — and that’s a good thing.

Middle Men" wants to be Boogie Nights for the Internet. Two crucial problems: Writer-director George Gallo isn't nearly the storyteller that Paul Thomas Anderson is. And this film stars Luke Wilson, one of the more inexplicable film stars of the past decade and a half. Where Boogie Nights looked at the rise of porn in the 1980s, Middle Men wants to tell the story of how porn took over the Internet from 1997 on. It did it, according to this "inspired by a true story" script, by figuring out how to let people buy hard-core porn online -- photos and then movies -- using a credit card, while disguising the purchases behind innocuous billing names. The person telling this story is a Houston family man named Jack Harris. He's played by Wilson, who isn't even convincing as himself, when he's selling cell...

Who doesn't wanna see a movie about porn? The year is 1995 and the world was buzzing about a brand new invention called the internet, which up until then sucked. Enter Wayne Beering and Buck Dolby. In Middle Men, Luke Wilson plays Jack Harris, a businessman that helps two genius, but troubled men invent porn on the internet…and make a killing in the meanwhile. “I always thought about kind of being like Paul Allen and Bill Gates, where two normal guys in their garage came up with his personal computer that changed the world,” Luke Wilson told Hollyscoop...

By his own account, Luke Wilson should never have become an actor. Growing up in Dallas, he wasn't active in drama; he did one play in high school, and the writer-director yelled at him for not taking things seriously. He was "forced" into his breakthrough role in the short film "Bottle Rocket" by its writers: his brother Owen and director Wes Anderson. And he has never, ever had a headshot. Wilson explains in his signature laid-back Southern drawl, "I was told many times, 'You need one, go get one!' And I could never bring myself to do it. I'd go into auditions, and I'd see a stack of a thousand of them, and I would tell myself, 'I may not get this job, but I know I'm not going to be in that stack.' "While it would be easy to resent Wilson for his subsequent success, he remains...

With the release date approaching, "Middle Men" has clipped a scene from the movie and shared it for a quick look at the drama comedy. Giovanni Ribisi's unkempt Wayne Beering is having an argument with Gabriel Macht's Buck Dolby over payment over the internet and credit card for their newly-established porn business.
These two characters are actually not the centric character. Owen Wilson's Jack Harris has a faithful and loving wife, two beautiful children, and a successful career fixing companies. When an associate calls him about an opportunity to help turn around a business that has fallen into trouble, he decides to take the job. Little does he know, it is a decision that will change his life in ways he never expected.
Wayne and Buck are two genius but troubled men who have invented a way to sell adult entertainment over the internet. The plan was brilliant but the execution wasn't.

Flashback to 1995! Middle Men, starring At&T commercial actor Luke Wilson, is finally getting a U.S. release Aug. 6 after debuting at Cannes in 2009 and the Santa Barbara Film Festival earlier this year. Wilson plays Internet porn pioneer Jack Harris; Giovanni Ribisi, Gabriel Macht, James Caan, and Kevin Pollak co-star. Kelsey Grammer is a senator! Warning: Language is very Nsfw and there are bare breasts in the first few seconds. The image I chose of Luke Wilson, to your right, is about the most PG-rated frame of the entire trailer, and maybe the most PG-rated image of all time.

Paramount has debuted a very Tna-filled red band trailer (via MySpace) for George Gallo's Middle Men, the comedy starring Luke Wilson about the origin of internet porn in the 90's. We featured the first trailer back in June, but it didn't really catch on, maybe because they couldn't really show everyone how raunchy and rowdy this movie truly is until they could unleash this red band trailer online. Sex sells, right? If you're a parent, don't let your kids see this, as there's enough gratuitous nudity and language to ruin them for life (just kidding). I think this looks okay, but I'm still not sold. Will it be good funny or bad funny? Thoughts? Middle Men was picked up in February by Paramount following some positive early festival reviews and now we have the first official trailer. The film tells the semi-true story of how porn became a thriving business on the internet.
The film’s main star is Luke Wilson as the businessman Jack Harris, who helps Wayne (Giovanni Ribisi) and Buck (Gabriel Macht) make a lot of money with porn on the internet.
Luke Wilson has been in some fantastic films (mostly directed by Wes Anderson), some flawed but passable films (Idiocracy) and some truly terrible films (My Super Ex-Girlfriend) and I’ve always wished his career was a bit more successful and his film’s a bit more consistent in terms of quality. A lot of the buzz about Middle Men has been really good so hopefully this film might help get Luke Wilson’s career a bit more on track.
