Exclusive: Art becomes fiction as René Magritte, Salvador Dalí and their peers give the whodunnit genre a surreal makeover in This is Not A Murder Mystery. Deadline can share an exclusive new image from the series, which is produced by Belgium-based indie Panenka.

Hans Herbots, whose directing credits include The Serpent and Paris Has Fallen helmed all six eps. “We wanted to elevate the genre and give it a twist,” he tells Deadline. “This story, this universe, offered a lot of a lot of opportunity to do that.”

“This is not a pipe” is the wording below Magritte’s famous 1929 picture ‘The Treachery of Images’ and This is Not A Murder Mystery features the iconic Belgian artist and several of his surrealist peers.

Exclusive: AMC Networks streamer Acorn TV has renewed its darkly comic British crime series Queens Of Mystery for a second season, with production already underway in Kent, south-east England.

Season 1 of Queens of Mystery followed a perennially single female detective and her three well-known crime writing aunts, who help her solve whodunit-style murders as well as set her up on blind dates. Acorn TV describes it as one of its most popular originals, though it did not disclose streaming figures.

Olivia Vinall played detective Matilda Stone in the first season, but will be replaced by Florence Hall in the second due to a scheduling conflict. Julie Graham (The Bletchley Circle), Sarah Woodward (The Pale Horse), and Siobhan Redmond (Unforgotten) return as Stone’s aunts.

With Covid resurgence meaning that only the naughty are likely to risk large gatherings this holiday season, there will be even more reliance on home-viewing comfort food in the vein of “The Princess Switch: Switched Again.” Bringing back the same director, writers and lead actors from Netflix’s original 2018 success, this pleasant sequel provides the updated “Prince and the Pauper” conceit a new wrinkle in giving star Vanessa Hudgens yet a third lookalike character to play.

Though inevitably the formula wears a little thinner in spots this time, it’s a frothy fantasy that should satisfy viewers’ itch for confectionary-looking Christmas fluff. The premise of Truth or Dare almost seems like a bad joke, the kind of idea for a movie that only shows up in fiction when mocking lame-brained movie plots. There have been a thousand jokes about innocent games, objects, or animals twisted to sinister ends, but this movie actually goes ahead and makes that its main idea. This is, indeed, about a murderous game of truth or dare. And it is supposed to be taken seriously!

Let.s back up and explain a bit. Truth or Dare follows a group of college-age British kids as they go to a party being held at a remote mansion. The party is in celebration of the birthday of Felix (Tom Kane), an outcast whom some of them had humiliated at a different party several months earlier. One would think this should be a giant red flag, but they answer...

I find with British horror, especially films with smaller budgets there is a tendency to stick to the mainstream idea of what is popular. Set up an injustice at in the first few minutes of the film then have a character come back for revenge. Its cliché, it’s over used and to be quite honest it’s boring. The ironic thing is though there is always a hidden gem that manages to shine through, down to some clever writing and actor choices. This is what you get with Truth or Dare.

This is a horror tale involving revenge and torture as one brother, Justin, looks for vengeance when Felix hangs himself after a night of humiliation. The "cool kids" will only have one more night to live with a game of spin the bottle offering more violence than passion. According to Screen Daily director Robert Heath is currently in post on his latest kill flick for London based Av Pictures, Truth or Dare.
