Blade Runner 2099 will ostensibly be set 50 years after the events of Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049, and (as such) 80 years after the events of Scott’s original 1983 movie (which was based on Phililp K. Dick’s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?). No cast or plot details were announced, nor was a timeline for when the series will eventually air.

After the early success of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” Amazon is doubling down on its strategy of mining the mythology of iconic science fiction and fantasy franchises to create new shows. Earlier this year, the streaming service began developing “Blade Runner 2099,” a mysterious series set in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi universe that takes place 50 years after the events of “Blade Runner 2049.” Now, Amazon has officially decided to move forward with the project, ordering 10 episodes of the series from showrunner Silka Luisa and executive producers Ridley Scott, Michael Green, and Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.

Though little is currently known about the show’s plot, it is part of Kosove and Johnson’s larger efforts to expand the “Blade Runner” universe since acquiring the property in 2011. In addition to producing “Blade Runner 2049,” they also backed the anime series “Blade Runner: Black Lotus.

The story follows Ethan Kopek, a young Tsa agent who gets blackmailed by a mysterious traveler to let a dangerous package slip through security and onto a Christmas Day flight. At a time when the friendly skies have never seemed less inviting, the movie could make air travel even less appealing.

Dylan Clark Productions will produce the film. It boasts a script by Tj Fixman, with additional writing by Michael Green. Executive producers include Holly Bario, Amblin’s president of production, who will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.

After receiving some of the best reviews of his career for his role in Apple’s Black Bird series, Taron Egerton looks to have found his next feature project. He is set to star in the Netflix and Amblin action thriller Carry On, with Jaume Collet-Serra on board to direct. Tj Fixman penned the first draft of the screenplay, with Michael Green doing the most recent polish. Dylan Clark will produce. The film marks the first production to come out of the overall deal Amblin signed with Netflix last June.

William Friedkin’s To Live and Die in L.A., which opened on Friday, November 1, 1985 to lukewarm notices and underwhelming box office despite being championed by Roger Ebert’s four-star review, is a highly stylized, dark, and uncompromising crime thriller that boasts a then-unknown cast with a story and a pace that feels more suited to the 1970’s. Melbourne-based screenwriter, video artist and filmmaker Harry Aletras has won the 2015 Australian Writers Guild.s Insite award for unproduced screenplays.

Aletras will attend the Adelaide Film Festival (October 15-25) and meet industry directors and producers with a view to moving the project, crime thriller Martingale, onto the screen.

Exclusive: Sarah Jones, the star of Fox’s J.J. Abrams drama Alcatraz, has joined the star-studded cast of CBS‘ new fall drama Vegas as a new regular. The show, toplined by Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis, also co-stars Carrie Ann Moss and Jason O’Mara. The series is inspired by the true story of former Las Vegas Sheriff Ralph Lamb, a fourth-generation rancher tasked with bringing order to Las Vegas in the 1960s, a gambling and entertainment mecca emerging from the tumbleweeds. Quaid plays Lamb, who clashes with Vincent Savino (Chiklis), a ruthless Chicago gangster who plans to make Vegas his own. The Media Resource Centre – South Australia’s centre for screen culture development – is pleased to announce the nominations for the 2012 South Australian Screen Awards (Sasa).

Now in its 13th year as Sa’s premier screen awards, Sasa continues to reward excellence and outstanding achievement from South Australian-based filmmakers.

With thousands of dollar in cash and prizes, Sasa provides an exciting platform for South Australian screen practitioners to showcase their work across drama, comedy, documentary, animation, music video, non-narrative and digital media.

Sasa also recognises the invaluable contribution made by Sa key ‘creatives’, offering awards in eight craft categories, as well as two jury prizes recognising notable contributions from Sa’s up-and-coming young filmmakers.

Sasa continues to grow in size and scope along with the quality of short form screen production in this state.

Short film The Palace has led the nominations at this year's South Australian Screen Arts Awards with seven nominations, including Best Picture.

The Cyprian-Australian co-production was also nominated for Best Drama while writer-director Anthony Maras was nominated for Best Direction, Best Screenplay and Best Editing. Nick Matthews was nominated for Best Cinematography.

Maras was raised in Adelaide but studied film production at the University of California before returning to Australia to direct critically acclaimed films Azadi and Spike Up. He then directed The Palace, which has garnered an array of awards including the Aacta Award for Best Short Fiction Film, as well as the Australia.s Writer.s Guild and the Flickerfest awards for Best Australian Short Film. Maras also picked up last year's If Award for Rising Talent.

Other films nominated at the South Australian Screen Arts Awards include Suburban Samarai, Horace in Slow Motion, Stunt Love and A Tale of Obsession.

Harrison Ford and relative newcomer Chadwick Boseman are set to star in Legendary Pictures’ Jackie Robinson biopic. Brian Helgeland wrote the script and will direct the movie, titled 42.

Ford will play Branch Rickey, President and manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 when he broke the “color barrier” by signing Robinson as the first African-American in Major League baseball. Deadline reported his offer this week and Legendary sent a press release blitz Friday confirming his casting. Robert Redford had long been attached to the role.

30-year-old Boseman, whose resume consists of mostly bit television parts until now, will play the second baseman. Robinson won the inaugural Rookie of the Year award that year, the National League Mvp two years later, a world series title in 1955 and, in 1962, he was inducted in the Hall of Fame. Mlb retired his number, 42, across all teams in 1997.

42 is a movie that will tell the story of Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey, the Dodger Executive who was the first to sign an African American player on a Major League Baseball team. Breaking the color barrier was a risky movie back then, but it was more a message than it was a risk. For obvious reasons the message was clear. Now a press release from Legendary Pictures confirms two major players joining the cast of 42. Harrison Ford, who was in talks to play as Rickey, has official joined the cast. And he will star opposite of relative newcomer Chadwick Boseman, who will play as Jackie Robinson.

Variety reports that Brian Helgeland and Warner Bros. have taken an unusual turn for their Jackie Robinson-centered 42, casting Chadwick Boseman as the iconic baseball star. (No, me neither.) The actor has spent the majority of his career in random episodes of random TV shows, with the occasional film role, such as The Express, being thrown his way. I don’t think you need me to tell you that this is a huge deal for him.

Not only because he’s playing one of baseball’s most iconic figures, either; Variety also confirms Harrison Ford‘s role as Branch Rickey, the man who signed Robinson into the Mlb in 1947 and forever changed the game. When he was rumored just yesterday, many (including myself) didn’t see it happening — if only because the once-iconic actor had relegated himself to easy genre fare or features drowned in sentimentality.
