The world of Stephen King adaptations runs the gamut across nearly every aspect of filmmaking. You have theatrically released ones and straight to video ones. Stories stretched into TV miniseries and short stories used as segments of anthology movies. Of course, there are features that do well with critics but fail with audiences and vice versa, fail with critics but are eaten up but movie goers worldwide. 1408 came at the beginning of the King renaissance in 2007 and was a success with both critics and audiences but somehow stands alone in the mid 2000s horror pantheon as a successful but forgotten movie. Who was originally going to star in the title role? How many endings does the movie technically have? How meticulous was the production about the number 1408? Grab your room keys as we find out what happened to 1408.

The 1990s were a contentious decade for horror movies, with many films from the era not holding up to the scrutiny of modern sensibilities. Though perhaps not as highly regarded as the previous decade, the greatest 90s horror movies showed off what the decade was capable of, from clever slashers that deconstructed the genre like Scream to thrilling intersections of horror and drama like The Silence of the Lambs. Sadly, not every scary movie ages quite as well as these masterpieces, as the 90s has demonstrated repeatedly.
There are many things that can date a movie quite substantially when looked back on through a modern lens. In many cases, it's changing social norms and the constant evolution of pop culture that reflects poorly on films of the past. However, especially bad special effects or outdated filmmaking practices can be just as destructive to a given movie's longevity, especially in the horror space,...

Folks, we've made it: we're officially in September, which means it's now Spooky Season. Sure, you could argue that the Halloween festivities shouldn't start until October, but I say: nuts to that! Summer is over (more or less), the temperatures are dropping (sometimes), and it's time to start watching horror movies left and right. If you're anything like me, you know that any time of the year is a good time for horror — I'll watch a horror movie in January, I'm so crazy! — but there's something extra special about embracing the genre as we get closer and closer to Halloween. It's almost as if we're given an excuse to cut loose and watch as many scary movies as we possibly can. Tis this season, after all.
With all that in mind, for this month's horror streaming column I've decided to bring out the big guns: Stephen King movies. It's probably...

Genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan has brought feature film adaptations of the Stephen King novels Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep to the screen, and recently wrapped up post-production on a feature adaptation of the King short story The Life of Chuck. His production company Intrepid Pictures is currently developing a TV series adaptation of King’s epic The Dark Tower saga for Amazon’s Prime Video. For a while, he was also set to make a movie based on King’s novel Revival, but that fell apart. But one King story he wanted to bring to the screen and never got the chance to work on was the short story 1408, which served as the basis for a 2007 film that was directed by Mikael Håfström from a screenplay by Matt Greenberg, Scott Alexander, and Larry Karaszewski, and starred John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. Flanagan missed out on 1408, but...

Let’s be honest, what’s your all-time favorite dragon movie? Is it Dragonslayer? Dragonheart? Q: The Winged Serpent? Maybe it’s an animated feature like How to Train Your Dragon or Raya and the Last Dragon? No matter what your answer is, the unpopular opinion remains, Rob Bowman’s 2002 popcorn flick Reign of Fire is one of the most underrated movies featuring the mythic fire-breathing beasts. Never mind the fact that the flick boasts a lowly 39 Metascore and 42% Rotten Tomatoes score, the grim dystopian world-building, excellent visual effects, and big-d*ck swinging performances from Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale remain a ton of fun to behold. Of course, Reign of Fire had the misfortune of running into the far more potent cinematic behemoth, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which largely overshadowed the movie’s mild commercial success and eventually relegated the film into obscurity at worst,...

From fire-breathing beasts to benevolent nature spirits, dragons are present in the myths of nearly every single culture. And while popular media has mostly defaulted to traditional western fantasy drakes instead of exploring the extensive mythology behind East Asian and even Central American dragons, it makes sense that there’s an overabundance of stories featuring these legendary reptiles.
Fortunately, there are still some innovative storytellers willing to come up with fresh takes on familiar monsters, and one of my favorite draconic reinventions happens to be Rob Bowman’s post-apocalyptic creature feature Reign of Fire, an underrated early 2000s gem that was only a couple of drafts away from greatness.
While the end result was undoubtedly a product of its time, the story behind Reign of Fire begins in the mid 90s with an unrecognizable spec script written by Kevin Peterka and Gregg Chabot. This early version of the story followed...

In no small part thanks to the success of 2018's "Halloween," which raked in a ridiculously great $255 million worldwide against a mere $10 million production budget, so-called legacy sequels have become all the rage in the horror genre. Basically, you make a sequel that can serve as both a fresh entry point for new viewers while bringing back some familiar elements to anchor it to the nostalgia train as well. You could certainly look to movies like "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" as part of this trend as well, but horror truly has been making the most of it in recent years. But, a full 25 years ago, "Halloween" attempted to be well ahead of the curve in this department.

Stephen King knows a thing or two about haunted hotels. His "The Shining" is the granddaddy of haunted hotel tales, and he even returned to the Overlook Hotel with the sequel "Doctor Sleep." And then there's "1408," King's short story about one mean room. King originally wrote part of the story as part of his non-fiction work "On Writing." It was merely meant to illustrate how a story changes from draft to draft. But the story turned out to be pretty darn good, and a fully formed "1408" became part of an audiobook collection before ending up in King's short story anthology "Everything's Eventual."
Since this is a Stephen King story we're talking about, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood came calling. Writers Matt Greenberg, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski took King's story and expanded it to feature length, keeping the basic outline of what King had...

Back in 1998, John Carpenter’s classic slasher Halloween got a “twenty years later” sequel called Halloween H20 (watch it Here) – and we’re now further removed from the release of H20 than it was from the release of the first Halloween. The film is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and as part of the celebration Paramount will be giving it a 4K steelbook release! The street date is September 26th, and copies can be pre-ordered at This Link. An image of the steelbook case can be seen at the bottom of this article.

The works of Stephen King are one of (if not the) biggest reasons that I fell in love with horror. With so many of his novels and short stories having been turned into feature films, it’s kind of hard to have never watched at least one – even if by accident. You have classic films such as The Shining and Pet Sematary, and then you have adaptations that you’re better off just reading the book. Speaking of Cell, its two stars, John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, happen to be in one of my all-time favorite King stories brought to life, 1408. Based on the short story of the same name, it started out as an audiobook (Blood and Smoke) before being printed in the collection, Everything's Eventual in 2002.

The best scary movies start with a truly killer idea. For Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson, it was to take the tropes of the done-to-death slasher movie and inject it with a satirical, self-referential edge tailor-made for the knowing audiences of the 1990s. Stephen King was on a roll when Pet Sematary came out in 1983, with each horror novel seemingly creepier than the last. After all, everyone loves a loyal pet, and many families can recount how they commemorated an animal/fish/bird’s life at death. Turn that domestic normality on its head and you can terrify most everyone. King admitted this was perhaps his most disturbing work, the one where he may have gone too far (which is saying a lot).
The 1989 film adaptation starred Fred Gwynne, Dale Midkiff, and Denise Crosby and did a fairly good job capturing the spirit of the novel. It performed well enough that it spawned a best-forgotten sequel.
And as with all things, it was been remade this spring and is out now on disc from Paramount Home Entertainment.
The premise remains the same: the Creeds have moved into a rural home near the local Pet Sematary.

The new Pet Sematary movie, the latest in a resurgence of Stephen King adaptations, is a tale of multiple endings. There's the original book ending from King's horror tome in 1983, the relatively faithful ending of the 1989 movie adaptation, and the ending that directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, and writers Matt Greenberg and Jeff Buhler, ultimately chose to include in their final version of the film. But there's another ending that audiences have yet to see. That alternate ending, which was shot and will be available for viewers who check out the movie on …...

The hottest trend in horror right now is Stephen King, and specifically, remakes of some of his seminal works. Most recently, It was a box office smash, which got the ball rolling. Now, we have a new Pet Sematary on our hands. A more efficient updating of the original film, it also makes enough changes to the story that we’re not just watching the exact same narrative play out over again. Bleak, creepy, and effective enough to recommend, it’s also not nearly as good as the early buzz out of SXSW this year suggested. It’s a decent fright flick but that’s about it. The movie is, of course, a remake of the adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name. The Creed family is looking for a slower paced life as they relocate to a small town in rural Maine from their busy Boston life.

We dig deep with Pet Sematary screenwriter Jeff Buhler about adapting King, changing the story and more.
This article contains spoilers for Pet Sematary.
Adapting the work of a revered author like Stephen King is always a challenge, but it’s twice as daunting when the material in question is one of the novelist’s most famous and acclaimed books. In this case, it’s Pet Sematary, King’s haunting tale of death, grief, and guilt in which a doctor and family man named Louis Creed, tormented by the death of one of his young children, buries the child in an ancient burial ground behind his house that brings whatever is buried there back to life…only not quite the same.
Working off a story by Matt Greenberg, writer Jeff Buhler was handed the assignment of adapting Pet Sematary for directors Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmeyer (Starry Eyes...

Mary Lambert’s 1989 film adaptation was a decent stab at Stephen King’s 1983 novel. It was fairly faithful and had a pleasing sense of the surreal – the latter mostly thanks to some ingenious casting (the sickly sister character was played by an emaciated male actor) and clever editing (it’s amazing how you can make a three-year-old look so evil just by juxtaposing scowls and giggles). The 2019 version, co-directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, is a more rampant reimagining of the source material. Slower and more sombre than your common or garden Conjuring fare, but rather cheesy compared with some of the modern horror classics with which we’ve been recently blessed, it has some great moments but doesn’t do quite enough to...

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura explains the new twist at the heart of Pet Sematary.
This Pet Sematary article contains spoilers.
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has some experience with the canon of horror icon Stephen King: in 2007 he produced the sleeper hit 1408, a genuinely unnerving tale about a haunted hotel room that was based on a King short story. But 1408 was a relatively obscure yarn. Taking on Pet Sematary, the near-legendary 1983 novel that the author once said he was too horrified to publish, is a whole other coffin full of worms.
For one thing, there’s the book itself, which King fans revere as one of his greatest, and which -- with its imagery of the eerie, misspelled titular setting -- has found its way into the imagination of the public at large. And then there’s the first movie made from the material, a 1989 film directed by Mary Lambert,...

Just weeks after Jason Clarke signed on to play Louis Creed in Paramount's Pet Sematary, the cast is starting to fill out even more. John Lithgow has signed on to play Jud Crandall, the neighbor of Louis and his family in this upcoming remake. Production is scheduled to begin this summer, although there is no word on exactly when filming will begin, or exactly where production will take place. While there are still a number of major roles to be filled, the cast is coming together quite nicely.
Like the 1989 movie, this project will be adapted from the 1983 Stephen King novel of the same name, which celebrates its 35th Anniversary later this year. The story follows Louis Creed, his wife Rachel Creed and their kids Gage and Ellie, who move from Chicago to rural Ludlow, Maine, after Louis accepts a position as a doctor at the University of Maine.

Readers first learned that "sometimes dead is better" when Stephen King's Pet Sematary was published in 1983, and they'll soon learn that morbid lesson again with Paramount Pictures' upcoming reimagining of the heart-wrenching horror novel, which has now added another actor to its ranks.
EW reports that John Lithgow will play the role of Jud Crandall in the new film adaptation of Stephen King's Pet Sematary. Played by Fred Gwynne (The Munsters) in Mary Lambert's 1989 movie adaptation, Jud is a central character in the chilling story of Pet Sematary.
As fans of the book and previous movie know, Jud is the elderly next-door neighbor of Louis Creed and his family, who have just moved into their home in a somewhat secluded region of Maine. Jud is the one who introduces Louis to the ancient burial ground nearby where pets have been laid to rest... and come back from their freshly dug graves.

Stephen King's Pet Sematary is coming back to the movies...
In a year when the majority of Stephen King movie adaptations are striking gold, Paramount Pictures is getting another one moving. This time, it’s the long-under-discussion remake of Pet Sematary, for which the studio has finally appointed directors.
See related 26 new TV shows to watch in 2017
Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes) have landed the job, and they’re going to be working from a screenplay by Matt Greenberg and David Kajganich. Other directors who were in the frame for the job, incidentally, were Johannes Roberts and Sean Carter.
No release date has been announced for the project yet, but it seems logical that – with King adaptations very much in favour – it’d want to get things moving relatively quickly. As we hear more, we’ll let you know…

Readers first learned that "sometimes dead is better" when Stephen King's Pet Sematary was published in 1983. The nightmare-inducing novel (perhaps King's most disturbing book and certainly one of the most haunting things I will ever experience) was first translated to the big screen by Mary Lambert in 1989, and now another rendition of King's living dead tale is in development with two directors at the helm.

Mercy (2014)
Written by: Matt Greenberg, Stephen King (Short Story)
Directed by: Peter Cornwell
Cast: Chandler Riggs (George), Dylan McDermott (Jim Swann), Mark Duplass (Uncle Lanning), Francess O’Connor (Rebecca), Joel Courtney (Buddy), Hana Hayes (Girl Next Door), Amanda Walsh (Charlotte), Chris Browning (Frank), Shirley Knight (Mercy)
If you notice from the credits, “Mercy” is a feature length film that is based on a short story from the modern day master of horror himself, Stephen King. In my humble opinion, I don’t think that Stephen King is one of those guys who you either love or hate. Regardless, of whether you judge him exclusively within the horror genre or when films based on his work crossed out of horror, such as “The Green Mile”. There is something from Stephen King for everyone, and at least one of the many things he wrote that resonates...

Like a phoenix rising very slowly and wearily from the ashes, fantasy adventure Seventh Son will soon land in theatres. After a very lengthy stint on the shelf following the Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures divorce, its new owners, Universal, have cobbled together an international trailer. The question is, though, will it outshine the somewhat hit and miss efforts of the last preview?
Early talk surrounding the epic, which is directed by Sergei Bodrov, has revolved around its addiction to genre conventions. Warriors, CGI monsters, dodgy accents, and dingy clothing are a few of the typical fantasy tropes that the pic is harnessing to ensnare audiences. If we’re to throw this international trailer into that mix, it seems Universal are attempting to capitalise on the success of Game Of Thrones. But without the cunning, genius or creativity.
To be honest, it’s a damn shame these teasers don’t seem...
