Al Yankovic can be described in a lot of ways besides "Weird." Most people know that he's a chart-topping singer-songwriter, a director-producer, a top-notch parodist, an author and a die-hard polka enthusiast. Even those who have followed his career closely, however, may have forgotten he was, for a brief moment, the host of a short-lived children's television show.
The Weird Al Show debuted on CBS on September 13, 1997 as part of their Saturday morning lineup. Each episode began with the all important "today's lesson" before viewers were invited into Yankovic's underground...

In what can best be described as an unconventional pitch to make his new movie soar, Isaiah Washington hit up a gay nightclub this past weekend to promote Lgbt drama “Blackbird.” TMZ posted video Tuesday of Washington and “Blackbird” costar Gary LeRoi Gray partying at West Hollywood hotspot Rage. Washington, who produced and co-stars in the film, was videotaped drinking, dancing, making new friends and singing “Blackbird’s” praises. The star’s marketing effort apparently paid off. “Blackbird” opened Friday in 13 theaters, taking in $45,834 for a respectable $3,526 per screen average. Isaiah Washington's on a guerrilla marketing campaign to spread the word about his new movie to the Lgbt community, and he went all in -- maybe not all in -- by partying at a legendary gay bar. Washington hit up Rage nightclub in West Hollywood (one of the biggest gay bars in town) this past weekend promoting "Blackbird" with his co-star Gary LeRoi Gray. We're told he was drinking and dancing ... having a great time.

The Boys in the Choir: Polk’s Antiquated Rendition of the Rural Gay Narrative
The blatant underrepresentation of black gay characters in film, whatever letter they’re placed into on the inclusive Lgbt spectrum, is simply not reason enough to appreciate the elemental contrivances of Patrik-Ian Polk’s Blackbird, an independent film rife with cliché in its euphemistic depiction of the rural queer experience that does little to elevate the film’s archaic nature.
The title has been inadvertently thrown into a higher caliber pop culture zeitgeist thanks to its distinction as Mo’Nique’s first post-Oscar role since her 2009 win for Best Supporting Actress in Precious. The significant media coverage concerning potential fallout between herself and director Lee Daniels should enhance the film’s shelf-life beyond the trappings of a niche market. Produced by the actress and her agent/husband Sidney Hicks, the project feels very much like the...

The actor-rapper on his new film, Ride Along, the progress of the Nwa biopic and how the old righteous fury still burns brightly
Hi, Cube. What are you up to?
Ah man, just sitting here chilling with my wife, watching the Lakers game.
Nice. Did you do any police research for Ride Along?
Ha ha! Nah, I didn't have to do no research – I've been in the back of those cars, I know how it goes! And my character is undercover. The difference between an undercover cop and a crook is a badge.
When was the last time you were in the back of one of those cars?
In real life? '90.
What for?
It was a bad night. Let's leave it at that.
So what was it like working with Laurence Fishburne again? (1)
The best. I owe a lot to Larry just for the advice he gave me on Boyz n the Hood.

Universal Pictures has hired Jonathan Herman to write the latest draft of the N.W.A. biopic that F. Gary Gray is attached to direct, with former member of the seminal rap group, Ice Cube, producing. I actually thought this was already in the can, and in post-production, especially after director Gray shared the above on-set photo late last year, on Twitter, along with the caption: Dre & F Gary Gray - The Nwa Movie kicks off the collaboration! Expect more incredible projects from this powerhouse duo ... Which suggested that production might be...

Once a Bruce Willis/Jamie Foxx project, the Kane & Lynch videogame adaptation is now set to star Gerard Butler, and possibly Vin Diesel
Back when the first Kane & Lynch videogame was released, most observers were of the opinion that it had been put together with one eye on a potential movie spin-off. Breaking Bad is over and what a finale it was, although it may have been predictable based on what we knew from the flash forward at the start of the season, it still didn’t disappoint and was full of stirring and thrilling moments. More importantly, now that this is over, Netflix crucially need to up their game.
Hansel and Gretel and Texas Chainsaw, two pretty dire entries from earlier this year, just are not going to cut it against Argo and The Perks of Being a Wallflower regardless of who did what at the box office. Netflix seem to have the monopoly on quality catalogue titles this week with some little seen gems with Permanent Midnight and Orange County but this means nothing to the public and mostly registers with nerds like me.

Legend Of Conan has appointed Andrea Berloff as its screenwriter.
The scribe, who is currently working on the Fugees biopic and F Gary Gray's Nwa movie Straight Outta Compton, is best known for penning World Trade Centre for Oliver Stone.
Producer Chris Morgan described Berloff as "an amazing writer who can juggle masculine grittiness with extreme emotional depth", adding: "Her take on Conan is powerful and genuine and would make Robert E. Howard proud."
Legend Of Conan is expected to follow on from the events of the original Conan the Barbarian, ignoring the events of 1984's Conan The Destroyer and the 2011 reboot.
Arnold Schwarzenegger will reprise his role as Conan, playing an older version of the character who serves as king of Aquilonia, according to Deadline.
Legend Of Conan is not expected to arrive in cinemas until 2015 at the earliest.

It looks like F. Gary Gray has his cast for the his upcoming Nwa project, Straight Outta Compton - another one of those "in limbo" biopics I wrote about a little bit ago that's apparently now on its way to becoming realized, if the above photo is any indication. Late last night, Dr Dre posted the above photo to Twitter, along with the caption: Dre & F Gary Gray - The Nwa Movie kicks off the collaboration! Expect more incredible projects from this powerhouse duo Last we wrote about it, Ice Cube said in an interview that it was definitely happening, but he didn't reveal much detail. He did say they were on the hunt for a director. But the...

Just yesterday, rumours cropped up about the latest possible addition to the Marvel cinematic universe. But there’s much more solid word today on developments with one of the company’s cornerstone characters: sibling directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo are in final talks to command the Captain America sequel.According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Russo brothers beat the likes of The Adjustment Bureau’s George Nolfi and Law Abiding Citizen’s F Gary Gray for the job. The application process was a long and secretive one, though we have heard Nolfi is now without a noggin after Joe Russo proved to be a crack shot with Cap’s shield.*Little is known about the actual plot of the Cap follow-up, though we do believe it’ll see Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) still struggling to adapt to life as a man out of time in a post-Avengers world. Whether...

Hollywood screenwriter Joe Eszterhas has accused Mel Gibson of anti-semitism after the actor and director, along with studio Warner Brothers, rejected his script about a famous Jewish military victory. In a letter published by American film blog The Wrap, Eszterhaus alleged that Gibson has used anti-semitic slurs around him on numerous occasions and has acted aggressively towards the screenwriter and his family.
"I've come to the conclusion that the reason you won't make 'The Maccabees' is the ugliest possible one. You hate Jews," said Eszterhaus, best known in Hollywood for writing Basic Instinct. He also said that Gibson only planned to make the film, which would track the 167Bc revolt of the Judean state against the Seleucid empire, to deflect "continuing charges of anti-Semitism which have dogged you, charges which have crippled your career".

F Gary Gray is in discussions to helm Nwa biopic Straight Outta Compton, it has been reported. The Law Abiding Citizen filmmaker is in final negotiations with producer Ice Cube to bring the movie to the big screen, Deadline understands. John Singleton was previously in line to direct Straight Outta Compton, but is no longer involved. Law Abiding Citizen director has reportedly been recruited by producer and ex-nwa member Ice Cube to direct the story of the legendary rap group
Law Abiding Citizen's F Gary Gray looks set to take charge of the forthcoming Nwa biopic, Straight Outta Compton, about the pioneering La hip-hop outfit.
Deadline reports that Gray has been recruited by producer Ice Cube, one of the group's best-known members alongside Dr Dre, Eazy-e, Mc Ren and DJ Yella. Nwa were active between 1986 and 1991, a period in which rap evolved from the block party sound of the early 1980s into the more aggressive gangster rap. They were one of Los Angeles' earliest successful rap groups and are widely considered one of the most important outfits in the history of hip-hop.

It's been almost ten years since the last instalment, but Ice Cube and New Line are apparently keen to revive the slacker Friday franchise. The first Friday was a stoner comedy released in 1995. It's nominal plot involved Chris Tucker's need to get $200 back to local drug dealer Big Worm (Faizon Love) and Cube's face-off with bully Deebo (Tiny Lister), but its easygoing pace allowed for plenty of sitting around on porches and talking nonsense and smoking.Five years later, Next Friday was a broader tale of Cube staying with his cousin Day-Day (Mike Epps) and getting embroiled in some shenanigans against the trio of haplessly inept Latino gangstas next door (this was at the height of Cube's rather public spat with Cypress Hill, context fans). The Cube/Epps double-act continued into Friday After Next, which saw them as mall cops. There was also a short-lived animated series, although none...

Even though only one videogame-based movie has ever taken over $100m at the Us box office, there’s no shortage of gaming source material for future movies…
To date, of all the videogame adaptations to date, only the first Tomb Raider film has crossed the magical $100m mark at the Us box office. And yet, the procession of videogame-based movies shows no sign of abating, even without the direct intervention of Uwe Boll, with several projects heading to the big screen. Perhaps the non-us box office take of the Prince Of Persia film last year, which ended up with $335m in the bank, has helped grease a few wheels.
So has the fact, though, that most videogame movies have been quite cheap to make, and come with an in-built audience that all but guarantees $30 to $40m at the box office.
Here, then, we've tried to round up those films with...

Treating herself to some pampering, Charlize Theron headed out to a Los Angeles nail salon yesterday afternoon (April 5).
The “Monster” actress looked snazzy as she walked inside, sporting a black blazer, frilled top, black trousers and black heels.
And it sounds like Charlize may be reuniting with her “Italian Job” partners in crime for the new sequel “Italian Job 2.”
Director F Gary Gray told press, "The script's coming in soon and we'll see... I hope it's a great story and better than the first - I'd love to play with the crew again. We had a great time making that movie, so we'll see."
"It really was great. You could rely on the spectacle and the action, which a lot of action films... they rely on those things, but to have a cast that breathes a certain life, a certain heart and a certain soul to the film, and I...

Failed by the American justice system after he witnesses the death of his wife and baby daughter during a burglary, Gerard Butler dishes out his own brand of revenge on high-achieving, sharp-dressing lawyer Jamie Foxx and tries to take most of Philadelphia down with him.
Butler, the beefy Scottish actor who has shot somewhat inexplicably up the rungs of the Hollywood ladder, wreaks his revenge from the bowels of a jail, declaring war on a system he calls "this whole broken thing, a diseased corrupt temple". He outdoes even Tarantino in getting medieval on the world's ass, claiming his revenge is "gonna be biblical".
F Gary Gray's relentlessly silly film is part Saw, part Death Wish and part Shawshank Redemption, pretending to examine the nature of justice, test the parameters of law and probe the relationship between good and evil. But really it's just intent on blowing shit up.

Paranormal Activity (15)
(Oren Peli, 2007, Us) Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Mark Fredrichs. 86 mins
This movie's paranormal box-office activity in the Us has raised expectations sky high, but it sets out to do one thing – scare the pants off you – and does that horribly well. Tapping into our primal fear of things going bump in the night, especially while we're asleep, it gives you the shivers with little more than a grainy fixed-camera shot of a bedroom, as a regular guy tries to get to the bottom of his girlfriend's alleged haunting by trying to video their nocturnal disturbances. There's a certain amount of audience investment required. If you go in determined not to be scared, you probably won't be, but if that's the case, why buy a ticket in the first place?

There are many formulas that I like, mostly because they work. The formula for original Coke is perfect and irreplaceable. New Coke be damned. One of my favorites, is what I call the Golden Girls formula for the perfect sitcom. I believe that any successful foursome will have the smart one, the slut, the dumb/ditzy/innocent one, and the wild card. Take a moment, and think about Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia respectively. Now think of Sex and the City’s Miranda, Samantha, Charlotte and Carrie. How about the Facts of Life girls, or the Queer as Folk guys? It works, right?
A few years ago, I stumbled on a Logo network show called Noah’s Arc. It chronicles the lives a four gay black men who are best friends and confidantes. Much like their Sex and The City counterparts, their love lives, careers and daily dramas play the central role.

The film Law Abiding Citizen, starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler (and produced by Butler's Shingle, Evil Twins) has gone through a lot of changes. Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium) wrote the original script, which was re-written by Frank Darabont. At one point, Darabont was also set to direct. But he dropped off the project and was replaced by F Gary Gray. That tempered interest somewhat. But Et now has a trailer, and it looks like pulpy fun in the Wanted vein. Last year, when Darabont left the project (not happily, it seemed) there was a lot of confusion about the plot. Quite a few different synopses floated up. Some had Butler and listed in roles that now seem to be the opposite of what's actually in the film, others had what now seem like partial views of the actual movie. Point is, the script underwent a lot of reworking, so hopefully...
