I consider myself something like a student, autodidact or otherwise, of cinema and––even still, must confess––had not ever grasped the concept of Argentine noir. Credit to Criterion Channel, who’ll expand my horizons with February’s program (concisely titled “Argentine Noir”) that includes one known title––Pierre Chenal’s Native Son, an Argentine film from a French director adapting an American novel about the African-American experience in Chicago––and five I look forward to discovering. Retrospective-wise, their wide-reaching Claudette Colbert program could double as a lesson in Old Hollywood, between Capra, Stahl, DeMille, Lubitsch, Sirk, and Sturges. February, of course, brings Black History Month and Valentine’s Day: the former engenders a series featuring films such as Nothing but a Man, Portrait of Jason, and Losing Ground; the latter brings “New York Love Stories,” from Carol to Crossing Delancey to, curiously, Annie Hall, which likely would not have...

United Talent Agency is expanding its partnership class by 24 today.
As Judd Apatow parts ways with the Jeremy Zimmer-led UTA after 30 years (as Deadline exclusively reported today), the agency announced the promotion of the two dozen from a wide range of divisions. Thursday’s promotions top the 19 new partners that UTA unveiled in October 2020, a 30-year high.
It’s worth noting there are five of the new partners today coming out of the agency’s unsettled MediaLink division, which saw its founder and ex-uta partner Michael Kassan in a messy and ongoing employment and legal melee with UTA the past few months. UTA’s Music division also spawns five new partners, and a trio of new partners out of the Publishing unit, among others.
“Each of these new partners embodies UTA’s commitment to innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration, which translates into impeccable service for our clients,” UTA President David Kramer said Thursday.

A bright, beautiful light went out today. Burt Bacharach, the Queens-raised popular songwriter who infused his meticulously constructed ditties with jazzy chord progressions that sounded nothing like anything on the radio in the 1950s and '60s has passed away. There is so much to say about Bacharach, and so much more to listen to. His collaborations with Dionne Warwick are musical nirvana. Ditto his numerous contributions to the motion picture songbook. "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" from "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Look of Love" from 1967's "Casino Royale," and "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" from Steve Gordon's sublime "Arthur."
But Bacharach respected the heck out of a dollar, as did his Brooklyn-born buddy Neil Diamond. So in 1982, with the United States gripped by "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" fever, this duo joined forces with Bacharach's songwriting-genius wife, Carole Bayer Sager, and recorded "Heartlight.

In December, Global Music Rights (Gmr)--a startup founded by powerful music manager Irving Azoff--threatened a billion-dollar lawsuit against Google, which it claims does not have the proper licenses to distribute songs from Gmr clients. The severity of the threat was a bit unclear at the time, but according to a new report, Google should be taking Gmr's bluster very seriously. In an article he wrote for Digital Music News, music industry attorney Steve Gordon has explained how the concept of "interim" licenses could spell trouble in Mountain View.
Here's a quick recap of Gmr's argument: In 2014, the startup signed notable artists like Pharrell Williams and Ryan Tedder among its first clients. Shortly after Google launched its YouTube Music Key service, Azoff lashed out, claiming Google had not secured sufficient licenses for his clients' songs. Google's counterargument to that claim seems to hinge on the fact that it previously...

Alcoholism in the movies have been played for both dramatic and comical effect. In fact some of the binge drinking done on the big screen have garnered considerable praise and pathos resulting in many performers winning Oscars and Oscar nominations based on this very serious addiction.
The alcoholic in cinema is larger in life because it is a societal reflection of the demons and destruction that affect millions of people globally. Film allows for the liberty to use creative licenses to highlight the physical and psychological pain and false feelings of pleasure to convey the true face of alcoholism and its hold on fictional characterizations that are bound by the poisonous allure of the bottle. However heavy-handed or hearty it may seem in portraying the detached drinker or happy drunk one thing is for certain…the depth and dimensional range of the chronic cinema sipper has never disappointed in giving...

Ralph Waite, who was beloved to TV viewers as the ultimate father figure, John Walton, on The Waltons, has died. He passed away at midday on Thursday at his home in South Palm Desert, Steve Gordon, the accountant for the Waite family, told The Hollywood Reporter. He was nominated for an Emmy in 1978 for his portrayal of the middle-American paterfamilias. He starred on The Waltons for nine years and directed 15 episodes. "Ralph was a good honest actor and a good honest man," said actress Michael Learned, who portrayed Waite's wife Olivia on The Waltons. "He was

Writer-director Rick Alverson tests his audience from the get-go with an opening scene of such perverted over-indulgence that even Caligula may have needed to avert his eyes. It is as if Alverson is attempting to weed out the weak at heart from the audience, all the while setting the stage for a story of a sublimely unlikable, uber-wealthy man-child. Our incalculably immature anti-hero, Swanson (Tim Heidecker), exists somewhere in a cinematic universe between Chance Gardner (Hal Ashby's Being There) and Arthur Bach (Steve Gordon's Arthur). Stuck in the quagmire of a mid-thirties existential crisis, Swanson approaches life like a 12-year-old boy armed with far too much knowledge about prolapsed anuses -- unless he is just talking utter nonsense out his ass (as he does about hobos, Hitler, and feudalism). Swanson's philosophical ramblings play like a mockery of intellectualism or an half-hearted attempt to pass himself off as a worldly hipster.

Morris Chestnut has two brand new roles to add to his resume. Though we won't see him on-screen again until the Steve Gordon-directed comedy Identity Thief comes out next year, he will be using that time to play key roles in both The Hive and Kick-Ass 2. The former is about a 911 operator who must work to try and help a kidnapped teenage girl while the latter is a sequel to the 2010 comic book movie with Aaron Johnson and Chloe Grace Moretz. Deadline, which is reporting both pieces of news about the actor, says that Chestnut will be playing a cop and a love interest for Halle Berry's character - who is playing the operator at the center of the film. Abigail Breslin is playing the girl in crisis and The Sopranos' Michael Imperioli has a part in the movie as well. Brad Anderson, who most recently helmed...

Stars: Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Greta Gerwig, Jennifer Garner, Luis Guzman | Written by Peter Baynham, Steve Gordon | Directed by Jason Winer
Guess what?! Arthur sees Russell Brand playing himself… again. But this time he has a slightly softer voice with his comedy toned down, which makes him seem even more childish and a bit mundane, if that’s even possible. As you can imagine, this story is somewhat boring, but oddly, there is enough essence to keep you going through the two hours of a man completely reliant on his mother’s money.
The film is of course a remake of the 1981 classic Arthur, whereby Dudley Moore plays a similar eccentric, spoilt man-child, but unfortunately this is another adaptation which doesn’t live up to the original. Russell Brand adds charm, and the modern technology serves well in the film, but there’s nothing quite like watching Moore frolic around in his giant bathtub.

Marry the guy off to a straightlaced gal, and tell him if he doesn’t go for it he’s cut off. But then he meets the fantastic girl…and it sure ain’t the one mummy picked. Sound familiar? Russell Brand is no Dudley Moore, but he gives it the ol college try and then some in this 2011 remake of Steve Gordon’s 1981 comedy classic starring Moore as the irrepressible man-baby Arthur Bach. Comedian Brand gets solid assistance from an excellent female cast consisting of Helen Mirren, Jennifer Garner, and Greta Gerwig, and the 2011 version of “Arthur” now arrives on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, On Demand and for Download July 15, 2011 from Warner Home Video. Loveable billionaire Arthur Bach, an irresponsible charmer who has always relied on two things to get by: his limitless fortune and the good sense of his lifelong nanny and best friend Hobson, to keep him out of trouble. Kind-hearted, fun-loving, and utterly without purpose, Arthur spends every day in the heedless pursuit of amusement. But when his unpredictable public image threatens the staid reputation of the family foundation, Bach Worldwide, he is given an ultimatum:...

There are threads that run through films which are timeless and universal; themes that are manna to audiences of any era. These include determinism; the notion that certain things are meant to happen, a man meeting his perfect woman for example, and as an audience we expect these things to play out and for any obstacle placed in the path of this endeavour to be removed by the film’s close. That’s our pleasure. There’s the idea that the best movie characters are larger than life; not just projections in the literal sense but projections of our fantasies, healthy or otherwise.
Then there’s our moral load, the hypocritical idea that however we live our lives, we expect movies to defend a moral position, usually that of righteousness, of responsibility, so that whatever the character’s stripe, they’re rewarded or punished for the...

Chicago – Critics were pretty hard on the remake of “Arthur” starring Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Garner, and Greta Gerwig (including our very own Patrick McDonald, who gave the film 2 stars out of five) and the film relatively bombed at the box office, opening in 2nd place to “Hop” and making only $12.7 million in its first frame with a lower per-screen average than “Hanna” or “Soul Surfer.” Now you can compare the new version to the award-winning original and its dreadful sequel in a 2-movie collection, now on Blu-ray.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
Warner Bros. could have used the opportunity of the remake to offer a truly impressive version of the 1981 original complete with digital remastering, featurettes, a commentary, and maybe a deleted scene or two. That didn’t happen. This is as minimal a tie-in release as can possibly be made. The two films weren’t even given their own individual discs.

Animation ruled again. Hop was Number One at the box office this weekend for the second week in a row with $21.6 Million. Arthur (2011) premiered in Second Place with $12.6 Million. Hanna premiered in Third Place with $12.3 Million. Soul Surfer premiered in Fourth Place with $11.1 Million. Insidious was Fifth with 9.7 Million. Source Code, Limitless, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, and The Lincoln Lawyer rounded out the top ten respectively.

How you react to Arthur will largely depend on your expectations. If you’ve never seen, or heard of, the 1981 movie Arthur you might find the new movie of the same name fairly entertaining. But if you have fond memories of the original, written and directed by Steve Gordon, you’ll know the truth: this occasionally amusing film can’t compare to the original, which was flat-out hilarious, with plum parts for Dudley Moore, as a childlike billionaire, and John Gielgud, as his long-suffering valet and caretaker. Want to know the difference between the two versions of "Arthur?" Just compare their first scenes. The 1981 original introduced Dudley Moore's Arthur Bach cruising for hookers. The 2011 remake has Russell Brand's Arthur dress up as Batman and crash an authentic "Batman Forever" Batmobile into Charging Bull and make fun of its testicles. I'm not a huge fan of the original "Arthur," but as a film about a drunken, whoremongering hero, at least it took some chances. Moore's Arthur was a lecherous sleaze. Brand's Arthur is a cutesy cartoon goof.
So is his movie. Everything messy and ugly (and therefore interesting) about the old Arthur has been smoothed out in this shrewdly calculated remake. With those hints of darkness gone, Arthur becomes an overgrown boy with his toys, a lost innocent looking for the love and respect he's never gotten from his distant mother. He doesn't need a drink; he needs a hug.

Arthur is another film in a long string of Hollywood remakes where we, as a movie-going audience, should just say "thanks, but no thanks." The original Arthur isn't a classic by any means, but it does carry with it a certain level of fondness from viewers and is one of the more iconic Dudley Moore performances. This remake doesn't serve to pay much of an homage to the quality of the original, nor does it really bring enough originality to justify it having been made.

Beyond providing an unflinching look at what happens to those caught between the moon and New York City, the 1981 comedy Arthur gave veteran comic actor Dudley Moore one of the best roles of his career as a drunken playboy cackling his way through a search for love. Though the movie—the single directorial effort from veteran television writer Steve Gordon, who died the following year—is uneven, Moore sells the performance with the sadness resting just behind the surface of his bleary eyes. In this remake of the 1981 classic, Arthur, Russell Brand takes on Dudley Moore's comic drunk, joined by Helen Mirren (in John Gielgud's butler role) and rival girlfriends Greta Gerwig and Jennifer Garner. Directed by Jason Winer (TV's Modern Family) from Peter Baynham's revamp of Steve Gordon's original script, this ensemble relationship comedy is failing to find critical validation. Early reviews, photos and the trailer are below. Brand and a strong supporting cast work hard to breathe life into this glossily inert studio concoction. (The best laughs are in the trailer: when they arrive in the movie, we don't laugh.) This badly-timed, old-fashioned romantic comedy about a wealthy spendthrift Peter Pan (we're in a recession) isn't real or funny, nor does it relate to us ...

Do you want to play billionaire just like the troubled Arthur in Warner Bros. new comedy remake starring Russell Brand? Well, you're in luck! We are holding an exciting contest in honor of director Jason Winer's hilarious essay on the terrible life of a super rich, incredibly spoiled man-child. So what if you don't have enough gouda to keep your gas turned on, or the pennies needed to pay rent? So what if you've been eating government issued grilled cheese sandwiches to keep from starving in this horrible economy. That doesn't mean you can't laugh at a man who has everything in life, with the possible exception of true love, right? You may be too broke to waist your needed cash on a lofty remake like Arthur, but if you win our contest, you can certainly pretend like you're rich enough to frivolously purchase that golden ticket at the actual box office window.

Dudley Moore, Liza Minnelli and the late Sir John Gielgud proved a magical combination in Steve Gordon's 1981 classic Arthur, which has been revamped in an upcoming Hollywood remake released next month.
Russell Brand follows in Moore's footsteps as the drunken playboy, Greta Gerwig is the love interest previously played by Minnelli and, in a gender-swapping update, Helen Mirren takes on Gielgud's role as the valet.
Also in the cast of director Jason Winer's new film are Jennifer Garner, Nick Nolte, Luis Guzman, Geraldine James and Jennie Eisenhower.
Superhero fans will notice that the Batmobile features in the trailer, with Brand's character dressing as Batman and his chauffeur Bitterman (Guzman) as Robin.

[1] Warner Bros has released a second movie trailer for the remake of Arthur. Russell Brand plays an "irresponsible charmer" named Arthur Bachwho will lose his limitless fortune if he doesn't accept an arranged marriage. I'm still not sold on two things: 1. The need for this remake and 2. that this movie is funny enough to warrant a $10-$15 movie ticket. The only reason I'm curious to see the film is the involvement of Luis Guzman and the Batman/Robin bit that is teased in the advertising. Watch the trailer embedded after the jump. Russell Brand as Arthur in Warner Bros. Pictures’ comedy “Arthur,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.
Here are the latest stills from Warner Bros. Pictures Arthur. Although I’m not a huge fan of Russell Brand, I recently went with some friends to a very small venue in Los Angeles to see Brand “rehearse” material for an upcoming documentary. Now being a huge fan of the original Arthur starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minelli, I am not happy about this re-make. Some classics should not be touched, and I had fully planned to heckle Mr. Brand about this until I saw him hilariously shame a woman who got up in the middle of his act to go outside and take a call. He literally berated her all the way to the door. But since it.s too late to fire off a protest email to the powers-that-be at Warners, I can...

Singer Katy Perry's fiancé, Russell Brand is no Batman and that is no bull! Earlier Tuesday afternoon of September 14, 2010, the Arthur (2011) film crew was in downtown Manhattan, getting ready to shoot the scene where Russell Brand, playing the wealthy playboy Arthur who is perpetually intoxicated, buys a Batman Forever (1995) Batmobile and ends up crashing it into the Wall Street Bull, or rather thankfully a replica of it! As you may have already heard, Russell Brand is starring in a remake of Steve Gordon's 1981 comedy "Arthur" for Warner Bros., and The New York Times today posted the first official images from the film.
The film follows a drunk who inherits a fortune if he agrees to marry the woman his family thinks is best for him. But then he suddenly falls for a working-class woman, which further complicates the situation.
If these pics show us anything, it's that Mr. Brand seems to be in his element, and that may work just fine for this kind of role. Jason Winer is directing the remake, which co-stars Greta Gerwig and Helen Mirren.

If you were a frequently intoxicated billionaire, in which pop culture vehicle of note would you rather be chauferred around New York: the Batmobile from Batman Forever or the DeLorean from Back to the Future? The answer is, of course, both. With the sighting of the Batman Forever Batmobile last week on the set of Arthur, we knew that the comedy — helmed by Jason Winer (Modern Family) — would have to show off lead actor Russell Brand in the Batman costume. What we didn’t know was that Luiz Guzman is not only in the film, but also filling out (over flowing?) a Robin costume of his own to hilarious effect. Filming on the remake of the 1981 Steve Gordon comedy began in July, and we can expect a few more crazy antics to be spotted in the near future. Jennifer Garner and Nick Nolte are in talks to join the already impressive cast of Warner Bros’ remake of 1981’s Arthur. According to THR, Garner would play the heiress whom Arthur is supposed to marry, while Nolte would portray her deeply religious father. When I first heard that Warner Bros. was considering an Arthur remake, I first thought some typically derisive thoughts. "Oh, that's dumb," I internally opined. "Dudley Moore so nailed that character it's not even funny." But then I corrected myself, because Dudley Moore was absolutely drop-dead funny in that flick. And even though I loved the film way back in 1980 ... I always had a problem with the leading lady. Liza Minnelli, multi-talented though she may be, never really struck me as, well, pretty. Sorry, Liza.
But fresh word from Deadline.com indicates that the leading lady in the remake will be not only adorable, but quite the cool actress as well. If "talks" go accordingly, then it will be Greta Gerwig starring alongside Russell Brand in a comedy about a drunken millionaire and the "plain" girl he falls in love with. Helen Mirren is also on board (in the John Houseman John Gielgud role?...
