When it comes to Black Christmas cinema, the Black community takes it very seriously, as there’s literally a debate online almost every year about which Black Christmas movies are the best, which ones aren’t Christmas movies at all, and the movies you have to have seen in order to not have your “Black card” revoked.

Mike Ho’s “Persona” (2024) is a kidnapping drama sans any color and texture. A woman wakes up in an unknown house. She has no recollection of the circumstances that transpired and has brought her there. She fumbles around for clues and markers that can give her a certainty or inkling of the stuff that has gone down here. Groping in the dark, she stumbles across another bruised woman, Samantha. It is only after some effort the woman recalls her name being Tricia.

What’s definite, however, is the reality of the house where the two are caged. The exits are all sealed up. But the ominousness of the captor lingers in the air. At any point, he may be back. There’s no real threat though the endangering man makes his appearance brashly. The film is essentially circling two women who are bracing themselves for the inevitable return of the kidnapper.

Jeezy is making his theatrical debut for his first leading role in the upcoming film “Trap City,” hitting theaters nationwide Dec. 13.

Written, directed and produced by Tel K. Ganesan, “Trap City” stars Brandon T. Jackson as Deshawn, an aspiring musician who contends with the difficulties of the music industry while trying to escape a life of violence. Jeezy plays the role of Reverend Lylee, and additional cast members include Clifton Powell, Erica Pinkett, Omar Gooding, Yogi Babu, Gv Prakash Kumar, Nepoleon Duraisamy and Tarina Patel.

In addition to starring in the film, Jeezy will serve as executive producer on its original soundtrack, releasing on the same day as the movie. The rapper contributes the song “Heavy,” produced by Cartier Fly, while Lil Reese has two tracks including “Just Vibin” and “Clocks.” Jackson also appears on the soundtrack.

The former The View co-host made an appearance on The Talk where she said she is still in close contact with her co-stars Holly Robinson Peete and Mark Curry.

“I am actually super friends with [Robinson Peete] and Mark Curry,” she said on the CBS daytime talk show. “Mark Curry and her have been amazing mentors in my life. For quite some time now, Christmas has come every day for Ali Afshar.

The actor, producer and former race car driver is founder and president of Esx Entertainment, a prolific indie film and TV production company that’s made its name in recent years pumping Yuletide content to streamers amid the pandemic.

The projects are modestly budgeted and shot efficiently and safely, mostly due to Afshar’s commandeering of his hometown — a sleepy Sonoma County village called Petaluma, where he built a soundstage from a converted barn and mines below-the-line crew from local residents. Titles include Netflix’s “A California Christmas” and its sequel “City Lights,” and the HBO Max originals “A Christmas Mystery,” “A Hollywood Christmas” and “Holiday Harmony.”

Afshar’s well-oiled Christmas machine functions at such a level that, during a recent conversation with Variety, he revealed he was in the middle of shooting another film — “A Wine Country Christmas.

They are set to star in Demonico, which is in development at Seal of the Gods Films (Content is King). Franky G (Power) and Javon Johnson (The Oval) have also joined the cast.

Demonico is set in the high-stakes world of hitmen and follows Nicholas Demonico, a hitman is double crossed and left for dead by his employers who comes back to wreak vengeance on them, with the help of his 12-year-old daughter.

When I think of the sitcoms that raised me, I don’t usually think of “Smart Guy,” and for that I am sorry.

“Smart Guy” often gets lost in the pantheon of sitcom lore, eclipsed by decades of long-running predecessors like “Full House,” “Fresh Prince,” and more. HBO Max has inked with deal with corporate sibling Warner Bros Television to stream Season 2 of the current OWN drama David Makes Man along with five ’90s-era Black-themed series: Hangin” with Mr. Cooper, In the House, The Jamie Foxx Show, Martin and The Parent ‘Hood.

Season 2 of of OWN’s David Makes Man finds thirtysomething David (Kwame Patterson) as a rising businessman facing an opportunity that will change him and his community forever. The mounting pressure forces David to choose between the instincts that helped him survive or finding a new way to truly live. In the world of disability representation, girls of color are rare to see, but the Disney Channel could be giving them greater visibility. In a piece originally dropped via Deadline, Disney is working on a pilot for the children’s series, “Saturdays,” a single-camera series about a girl and her interest in competitive roller-skating.

Written by Vance, the pilot centers on Paris Johnson, played by Danielle Jalade (Yes Day), a 13-year-old girl who has spent most of her life roller-skating.

The “Escape Room” sub-genre of horror seems to be picking up a bit of pace the last few years, coinciding with the popularity of real-life escape rooms. Personally, I haven’t been to one in real-life and the handful of movies I have seen based on them have ranged in quality, without any being outstanding. Is there a great movie with this basic story? Well, perhaps it has already been made because two of my favourite horror movies in Saw (2004) and Cube (1997) are basically escape room movies before that became a thing. It’s very hard to show any originality with these types of films but these two classics show you can, does Escape: Puzzle of Fear follow suit?

It's Father's Day -- and as the rest of us give a big hug to our papa bears ... these famous folks are pretty much doing the exact same thing. This year’s American Black Film Festival lineup is stacked with some of the top names in Hollywood as well as emerging voices including a screening of Reginald Hudlin’s The Black Godfather, a conversation with Spike Lee and his protege Stefon Bristol as well as the five finalists for HBO Short Film Competition, which is now in its 22nd year. The fest takes place June 12-16 in Miami.

The program will also include the previously announced opening night film Shaft. New Line Cinema’s reboot of the iconic character will screen at the fest ahead of its June 14 release. In addition, Netflix will screen the Chris Robinson-directed Beats, a coming-of-age drama set in Chicago’s South Side hip-hop scene starring Anthony Anderson.

Director John Singleton’s film Baby Boy is a classic of early-2000s black cinema. Tyrese Gibson stars as Jody, a guy with a serious Oedipus complex living in South Central Los Angeles. Throughout the movie, Jody deals with the ramifications of being an absent father, a nigh-worthless son and a bad fighter. A “Baby Boy” sequel might be in the works. On Monday night, star Tyrese Gibson took to Instagram to tease a possible second installment of his 2001 film, in which he co-starred alongside Taraji P. Henson. “Sequel to ‘Baby Boy’ coming soon….. #BabyBoyComingOfAge shout to @johnsingleton”, the actor wrote on the first of three posts teasing the sequel.

Written and directed by John Singleton, “Baby Boy” follows Jody (Gibson), an unemployed man living with his mother. Things aren't stalling for the Stallworths. Bounce TV has renewed the Family Time TV series for a fourth season. Season four will premiere in the fourth quarter of 2016. No premiere date has been specified.

Family Time stars Omar Gooding and Angell Conwell. The cast also includes Tanjareen Thomas, Bentley Kyle Evans Jr., and Jayla Calhoun. The sitcom was created by Evans who produces with partner Trenten Gumbs. The Family time season four pickup was announced in a multi-show press release. The relevant portions are excerpted, below.
