Friends fans span generations. Thanks to the series' arrival on streaming, a whole new generation of young people are discovering NBC's must-see Thursday night comedy turned cultural touchstone. But that also means there are a whole host of fans who probably had no idea — or at least have never seen — that a Joey Tribbiani-centric spinoff called Joey actually happened. Well, for those younger fans, the chance to check out the short-lived series that barely was is now.
The Matt LeBlanc-starring series, which saw Joey reunited with his sister and nephew, only aired for two seasons before being canceled by NBC. The show moved LeBlanc's Joey from New York to Los Angeles in an attempt to further his acting career, but also saw a role reversal for the character that audiences did not enjoy. Friends' infamous spinoff series Joey, starring Matt LeBlanc, has finally dropped on streaming for the first time, two decades after first airing. Co-created by Friends writers Scott Silveri and Shana Goldberg-Meehan, Joey debuted on NBC in September 2004, around four months after the finale of Friends. It followed Joey Tribbiani, one of the core characters of Friends, as he moves to Hollywood in search of work after his TV show is canceled. Joey had an ensemble cast of supporting actors including Drea de Matteo, Paulo Costanzo, and Jennifer Coolidge, and ran for two seasons before being canceled in May 2006.
Now, for the first time ever, Joey will finally be available to stream, but not through any of the expected platforms. The first two episodes of Joey have dropped on YouTube and can be found on the official Friends YouTube channel. This presents a unique opportunity for fans of both sitcoms to revisit Joey,...

The official “Friends” YouTube channel Tuesday posted the first two episodes of “Joey,” a spinoff series centering around Matt LeBlanc’s wisecracking womanizer Joey Tribbiani.
This is the first time “Joey” has been made available since its 2004 debut. Starring LeBlanc alongside Drea de Matteo, Paulo Costanzo, Jennifer Coolidge and Andrea Anders, the series follows the titular Joey as he “leaves New York for Hollywood in order to take his acting career to the next level” and reunites with “his high-strung sister Gina (Matteo) and “Michael (Costanzo), his 20-year-old genius nephew,” per the official logline.
“Joey” ran for 46 episodes across two seasons from 2004-2006. Created by Shana Goldberg-Meehan and Scott Silveri, the show’s pilot pulled in an impressive 18.6 million viewers. However, the buzz didn’t last long, and viewership declined significantly through the remainder of Season 1 and Season 2.

Friends is one of the most beloved and popular sitcoms of all time. The ten-season NBC sitcom followed the lives of six 20-somethings in New York City, where they balanced their jobs, friendships, and relationships.
The series ran between 1994 and 2004. However, even three decades later (and more than 20 years since its finale), the sitcom is still widely popular. While the series has often received some criticism over its lack of diversity, as well as some problematic storylines, it's still a comfort show for many. Now, Warner Bros. has surprised fans in the most unexpected way: by posting two episodes of its spin-off, Joey, to stream for free on YouTube, per Deadline.
The official Friends YouTube channel posted the first two episodes of Joey, the pilot and Episode 2, "Joey and the Student." Following the series finale of Friends, Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) decides to take his career further and move to Hollywood.

ABC is starting to whittle down its comedy projects.
The Disney-owned network is not moving forward with two high-profile comedy pilots – Lucy Liu’s workplace comedy, which was formerly known as Kids Matter Now, and Work Wife.
The workplace comedy, which has also had the title Bossy, starred Lucy Liu and came from Better with You creator Shana Goldberg-Meehan, CBS Television Studios and 20th Century Fox TV.
The multi-camera comedy was ordered to pilot in March 2020 but the Covid pandemic meant that it wasn’t able to shoot until much later down the line.
Written and executive produced by Goldberg-Meehan and directed by Christine Gernon (Speechless), the show centered on a diva boss with no patience for working parents who adopts a baby and has a change of heart, casting her mother-of-three assistant as an unlikely mentor and upending the office dynamics.
Former Angie Tribeca star Hayes MacArthur was set as a lead opposite Liu.

Along with Grace, the series stars Caitlin McGee, Jimmy Tatro, Karla Souza, and Sasheer Zamata. Shiloh Bearman, Jordyn Curet, Chloe Jo Rountree and JeCobi Swain also star.
“Home Economics” was written and executive produced by Colton and John Aboud. Grace executive produces in addition to starring, along with Eric and Kim Tannenbaum of The Tannenbaum Company. Jason Wang of The Tannenbaum Company will co-executive produce.

ABC Scraps ‘Thirtysomething’ Sequel Pilot, Vampire Drama ‘The Brides’ as Remaining Slate Takes Shape

ABC has made a range of decisions on its remaining pilots this season, which were all shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Firstly, the network is scrapping its pilots for the dramas “The Brides” and “Thirtysomething(else)” and the comedy “Valley Trash.” The news is surprising for “The Brides” — a female-led vampire soap opera with “Riverdale’s” Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writing — and “Thirtysometing(else) — a sequel series to the classic dramedy “Thirtysomething” with the original creators and multiple original cast members returnin. Both shows were pegged as early frontrunners for series pickups prior to the pandemic. According to sources, both shows were on the pricier side to produce, which may have contributed to ABC cutting them loose.

Both shows were pegged as early frontrunners for series pickups prior to the pandemic. According to sources, both shows were on the pricier side to produce, which may have contributed to ABC cutting them loose.

HBO Max launched on Wednesday with the entire library of “Friends” as its cornerstone selling point. But for completists, HBO Max is still missing a component of the “Friends” Creative Universe: The spinoff series “Joey,” which is nowhere to be found on the new streaming service.
An HBO Max spokesperson confirmed that the streamer hasn’t licensed “Joey” yet, “but we’re always assessing available shows to see what will be a good fit and well received by subscribers.”
The Matt LeBlanc comedy aired on NBC from 2004 to 2006 as a direct sequel to “Friends,” and followed LeBlanc’s character, Joey Tribbiani, as he moved to Los Angeles to advance his career as an actor. Drea de Matteo starred as Joey’s older sister, Gina, while Paulo Costanzo was his nephew, Michael. Jennifer Coolidge, Andrea Anders, Ben Falcone and Miguel A. Nunez Jr. also starred.

ABC has handed a late pilot order to Kids Matter Now, a multi-camera comedy from Better with You creator Shana Goldberg-Meehan, CBS Television Studios and 20th Century Fox TV.
Written and executive produced by Goldberg-Meehan and to be directed by Christine Gernon (Speechless), Kids Matter Now centers on a diva boss with no patience for working parents who adopts a baby and has a change of heart, casting her mother-of-three assistant as an unlikely mentor and upending the office dynamics.
The pilot order for Kids Matter Now is for the regular pilot season despite coming after ABC recently gave a second-cycle pilot order to drama Triage.
ABC delayed pilot order confirmations for several comedies this season as it employed a different strategy. Gary David Goldberg, the Emmy-winning creator of Family Ties and Spin City, died yesterday in Montecito, Calif. He was 68. Goldberg was an experienced TV writer of 1970s programs like Lou Grant, The Tony Randall Show, and The Bob Newhart Show when he built Family Ties in 1982 for NBC, basing the idealistic hippie parents played by Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter on himself and his wife, Dr. Diana Meehan. The show became an essential part of the network’s Thursday-night lineup — pairing with The Cosby Show for a time as TV’s two biggest shows — and made Michael J. Fox a huge star.

Gary David Goldberg, the Emmy-winning creator of Family Ties, died Sunday after a long battle with brain cancer. He was 68.
Goldberg, who passed away two days shy of his 69th birthday at his home in Montecito, CA, launched Family Ties on NBC in 1982. The comedy made a star of Michael J. Fox and served as a staple of the Peacock’s Thursday lineup for nearly a decade.
He later reunited with Fox on ABC’s Spin City (which he co-created with Bill Lawrence). He also created the acclaimed semi-autobiographical half-hour dramedy Brooklyn Bridge, which ran for two seasons on CBS.

Gary David Goldberg, the Emmy-winning creator of "Family Ties," died on June 23 of brain cancer, Variety reported. He was 68.
Born in Brooklyn, Goldberg was raised in a home with a close, extended family that was headed by a strong matriarch, his grandmother. He was a huge sports fan and a wanderer who had a bit of trouble figuring out what he wanted to be when he grew up.
Goldberg's collegiate career, which he described as "prolonged and checkered," involved attending numerous schools, including Brandeis University and San Diego State University. He only decided to become a scriptwriter at the urging of one of his professors.
Goldberg was working as a waiter at the Village Gate club in Greenwich Village in 1969 when he met his wife and the love his life, Dr. Diana Meehan. They were a couple of hippies -- a product of their time -- and spent the early...

Shana Goldberg-Meehan and JoAnna Garcia are returning to ABC. In a very competitive situation, the network has landed a comedy from Better With You creator/executive producer Goldberg-Meehan that is toplined by Garcia, that series’ star. The multi-camera project, about a woman (Garcia) who moves in with her husband’s family, has received a pilot production commitment. The pitch hit the marketplace yesterday and sparked a bidding war after landing offers from ABC, NBC and CBS. Warner Bros TV, where Goldberg-Meehan has been based since her days on Friends, is producing. Goldberg-Meehan most recently created and executive produced the multi-camera ABC comedy series Better With You, starring Garcia and Jennifer Finnigan, which ran for one season. This marks the fourth consecutive series project at Warner Bros TV for Garcia following Privileged, Better With You and Gossip Girl, on which she did an arc. Goldberg-Meehan and Garcia are with Wme.

Television fans, it's time that we face the facts. It's a sad, sad truth, but one of television's most beloved traditions is on the endangered list.
Yes, we're talking about the TV theme song. What is the world coming to when we can't come home from a long day, settle in in front of the TV, and sing along to the opening credits of our favorite show? Heck, even "Glee" doesn't have a theme song. It's a travesty.

There’s the newly-dating, the not-so-newly-dating and the older couple. The idea is that each pair will provide their own punchlines just by virtue of their situations. Cue the lazy writing.
From a “Friends” producer (Shana Goldberg-Meehan) desperately trying to recreate the spark of that show, “Better With You” stars JoAnna Garcia and Jake Lacy as the new couple,...
