Released in 2009, director James Cameron’s film Avatar became the first movie to officially gross more than $2 billion. Then it took him thirteen years to get a sequel into theatres, so it wasn’t clear if the follow-up was going to be able to replicate that success. But then, sure enough, Avatar: The Way of Water also grossed more than $2 billion, paving the way for not only Avatar 3, or Avatar: Fire and Ash, (which is scheduled to reach theatres on December 19, 2025) but also Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 – which will be released on December 21, 2029 and December 19, 2031, respectively. The first Avatar was quite long, with a running time of 2 hours and 42 minutes, but Avatar: The Way of Water surpassed it, going on for 3 hours and 12 minutes. Now, Cameron has confirmed that Avatar: Fire and Ash will be even longer.

Matt "Daredevil" Murdock (Charlie Cox) encountered numerous speed bumps on his journey from Netflix to the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper even before filming wrapped on "Daredevil: Born Again" Season 1. In late 2023, Marvel Studios chose to revamp "Born Again" with a whole different creative team, with showrunner Dario Scardapane ("The Punisher") and director duo Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson taking over. The end result is scheduled to premiere in March 2025, with returning characters Daredevil, Wilson "Kingpin" Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), Frank "Punisher" Castle (Jon Bernthal), Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) set to encounter new players like Hector "White Tiger" Ayala.
Production hurdles are nothing new to Marvel Studios, but from a fan standpoint, they're particularly concerning when it comes to this show. James Cameron has helmed a series of successful and critically acclaimed projects, but there's nothing like his current franchise. Avatar debuted in 2009 and became the highest-grossing film of all time, with its 2022 sequel breaking more records.
The filmmaker's franchise consists of five films, with the third installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash, set to premiere later this year. With a cast filled of critically acclaimed actors, as well as some of the most groundbreaking visual effects, the franchise is a guaranteed success. Another surprising fan of the franchise is Anya Taylor-Joy, who has just shared with Entertainment Tonight that she would love to star in the next Avatar.

Josh Gad knows exactly why he wasn't cast in James Cameron's epic franchise of Avatar films — and it's a funnier reason than you might think. The actor is speaking out about his experience auditioning for the popular movies in his new memoir, In Gad We Trust (out now), and even though he got far in the audition process — going so far as to fly out to Los Angeles to meet with director Cameron — he didn't get the part due to his looks. Well, his blue looks.
As excerpted by Entertainment Weekly, Gad says he auditioned "to play the role of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington)'s best friend and translator to the alien race known as the Na'vi" during a decidedly joyless run in the Broadway musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, back in 2006. And though Gad was committed to staying in the show until his contracted run was through,...

You know that feeling when you’re watching a show, and suddenly it’s like someone yanked the floor out from beneath you? That gut punch when everything you thought you knew is turned upside down? Well, if you thought Yellowstone was pushing the envelope before, episode 12 of season 5 has completely obliterated any sense of restraint.

With John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) death still echoing through the Yellowstone universe, it’s not just bodies piling up—it’s emotions, values, and even a bit of humanity. Sure, Colby’s death was a tough pill to swallow, but nothing prepared us for the moment that left us questioning the very core of Kayce Dutton’s (Luke Grimes) character.

Dexter is a show that constantly forces its audience to question the titular character’s murderous morals. Played excellently by the great Michael C. Hall, Dexter is a show packed with brutal moments, tragic storytelling and gory kills.
Some of these kills, to fans, have made their place in history as some of Dexter’s best. Whether for style or for story, Dexter’s eight-season run has had some iconic murders that make audiences question how much they should enjoy the show.

Spoiler Alert for 1883, 1923, & Yellowstone season 5, part 2
Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) might have made a life-changing decision in Yellowstone season 5, saving himself from the Dutton family curse. Kayce's story has had many compelling turns as he balances the responsibilities of trying to save the Dutton ranch while prioritizing Tate (Brecken Merrill) and Monica (Kelsey Asbille). After Mo (Moses Brings Plenty) helps Kayce interpret his visions following the death of his father, John Dutton (Kevin Costner), his path becomes clear. Kayce's visions in the Yellowstone season 4 finale suggest the youngest Dutton would have to choose between the ranch and his family, and in Yellowstone season 5, he has.
After a conversation with his son indicates Tate doesn't see himself running the Yellowstone ranch, Kayce plots a course for his family's future and goes full speed ahead. After his actions cause the state to reopen the investigation into John Dutton's death and rule it a homicide,...

Spoiler Alert for 1883 and Yellowstone season 5, episode 13, "Give the World Away"
Yellowstone season 5, episode 13, features a connection to 1883 that hints at the ending of Taylor Sheridan's hit neo-Western series on Paramount Network. In "Give the World Away," Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) both work to save the ranch in different ways with their unique strengths. Beth auctions off everything the estate owns in a massive sale that garners a healthy $30 million, covering the mortgage that pays the enormous Dutton Ranch tax bill. Meanwhile, Kayce progresses with his solution, tapping into Beth for business advice that could decide the fate of Yellowstone season 5, part 2.
At the top of the outing, Kayce returns from his mission in Yellowstone season 5, episode 12, where the former Navy Seal hunts Grant Horton (Matt Gerald), the man responsible for killing his father. Kayce threatens the assassin, "counting coup," at the end of Yellowstone...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Yellowstone season 5, episode 12!Yellowstone director Christina Voros has explained Kayce (Luke Grimes) doing a "counting coup," and what it means for Yellowstone season 5 as the final episodes approach. In Yellowstone season 5, episode 12, Kayce finds Grant (Matt Gerald), the man who killed his father, John Dutton (Kevin Costner), and threatens him and his daughter. The former soldier decides to invoke a "counting coup," a Native tradition that involves harmlessly showing one's mettle to their opponent. This involves knocking him out with the butt of his gun, signaling his loyalty to his family.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Voros explained how Kayce's decision to employ a "counting coup" when confronting Grant about John's murder shows how he's willing to fight for his family in Yellowstone. She explains how it's a symbolic moment for him, showing how he's willing to protect the people he loves in ways that emphasize the history he's part of.

The namesake of Yellowstone season 5, episode 12, "Counting Coup," supports a prophecy embedded in Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western epic that predicts the end of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. Note: This story contains spoilers from “Yellowstone” Season 5, Episode 12.
There’s something about the run to Season 5 Part 2 of “Yellowstone” that feels like a funeral march. The show is still humming along ratings-wise and creator Taylor Sheridan is more prolific than ever, but there’s a stink of death around his crown jewel. Perhaps it’s because the show lost its marquee actor, Kevin Costner, prior to the release of this season and thus quickly dispatched him on-screen in the premiere. Or maybe it’s just because it’s “Yellowstone,” a show that’s always been filled with drama and despair, and producers want to go out with a bloody bang.
Either way, there’s quite a bit of blood in the water already on “Yellowstone,” from the much-wanted demise of the evil Sarah Atwood (Dawn Oliveri) last week to the much sadder (and much more accidental) death of ranch...

It’s hard to believe that Yellowstone will wrap up its run on Paramount Network in a few weeks.
Unconfirmed reports in recent months have suggested that the show could get a surprise renewal for Season 6.
However, Paramount Network has yet to confirm that it is walking back the show’s cancellation, so all we can do is proceed with what we know:
Yellowstone, Season 5 Part 2 will wrap up on the cable network on Sunday, December 15, at 8/7c.
Given that the series was canceled after five seasons last year, the final episode will likely provide plenty of closure, but it will probably leave some plot threads dangling to bring certain characters back.
The decision to cancel was initially driven by Kevin Costner’s departure from the show, but there’s a chance that Paramount Network could issue a surprise Season 6 renewal because the cast signed pay-or-play contracts for another season.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “Yellowstone” Season 5, Episode 11, “Three Fifty-Three.”]
Here are a few recent scenes from “Yellowstone” that are absolutely, undeniably, without-a-doubt vital to Season 5: Beth (Kelly Reilly) learns Italian. Sarah (Dawn Olivieri) visits the phone store. Kayce (Luke Grimes) incapacitates a doctor to demonstrate how the human body works for another doctor. Tate (Brecken Merrill), well, pretty much everything Tate says at family dinner is dumb.
Now, despite my recurring complaints about bloat, I am not a plot purist — one of those joyless TV viewers who complains whenever there’s a stray sequence, scene, or spoken word that dares to exist for reasons beyond moving the A-story forward — and “Yellowstone” isn’t either. Taylor Sheridan’s hit show has long savored any extra time in the saddle, including many-a-music video-like sequence of cowboys cowboying, often set to one of the creator’s favorite country-rock tunes. The final season of Yellowstone has upped the stakes significantly, with the most recent episode delving into the night of John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) death.
As viewers are well aware, Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) gave the kill order at the request of her love interest, Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley).
Despite Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 11, filling in many blanks about the night of John’s demise, the explosive installment concluded with Sarah’s.
The development came after Grant (Matt Gerald) saw on the news that John’s death had been ruled a homicide, so Sarah was a loose end to him as the only person who knew what really happened that night.
Sarah had many flaws, but there are still questions about whether a thirst for power drove her decisions or whether she genuinely loved Jamie.
Either way, her death scene goes down as one of Yellowstone’s most shocking because...

Plot: Yellowstone chronicles the Dutton family who controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States. Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds, and hard-earned respect – the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders – an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and America’s first national park.
Review (Spoiler Warning): In the almost two years since the eighth episode of Yellowstone‘s fifth season premiered, fans have waited to learn the fate of John Dutton. Kevin Costner entered a very publicized feud with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan, which was tied to his salary and time away from the series to direct his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga. The first part of that film has come and gone from theaters, but we have still been waiting to see how the second part of Yellowstone‘s fifth and final season would address Costner’s departure. Last night, we finally found out.

Surprising, daring movies that subvert audience expectations have long since been a staple of film-making. Few of these subversions come as more of a surprise than when a major actor is killed off in the movie far earlier than expected, with typical narratives making viewers assume that big-name stars will survive to the end of the story. By pulling a metaphorical rug out from underneath these audiences and killing off a major actor, these movies end up ingraining themselves in viewers' minds by re-establishing just what is at stake in the plotline.

Thirteen years following James Cameron's massive box office hit, the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, hit theaters in late 2022, and now that it's available on streaming, fans think they saw Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the film. Like Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water was a massive triumph and quickly became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. It didn't dethrone the original film for the top spot, but its success is bound to continue as more people who didn't venture to theaters to watch it can now access it in the comfort of their own homes.
The sequel takes place 16 years after the events of the first movie, and the cast is stacked with stars. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, Cch Pounder, and Giovanni Ribisi return in the film, and Kate Winslet, Jemaine Clement, and Edie Falco play new characters.

Avatar: The Way of Water sees a specific character returning from the 2009 original, leaving many to wonder if there was an Avatar 2 Vin Diesel role. Avatar: The Way of Water features a lot of returning characters as well as a host of new introductions within the world of Pandora. From Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri Zoe Saldaña) to the return of Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), Avatar: The Way of Water has a cast stacked with talent similar to its predecessor.
One character, however, is leading many to question whether Fast & Furious actor Vin Diesel had a part in Avatar: The Way of Water — and that the movie may even have contained an uncredited or hidden Avatar Vin Diesel appearance. Sigourney Weaver returned for Avatar: The Way of Water, but not in the way that many expected. Appearing in the first Avatar, Sigourney Weaver plays Dr. Grace Augustine, a xenobotanist who joined the Avatar Program and helped create peace with the Omaticaya clan. Dr. Grace dies in Avatar, but Sigourney Weaver's Avatar 2 character is someone completely different, avoiding one of the sequel's biggest problems.
Avatar: The Way of Water is the long-awaited sequel to the incredibly popular first Avatar film, with James Cameron continuing on his franchise. While the film series mostly focuses on the alien Na'vi and their planet Pandora, Avatar 2 is bringing back several characters from the original film, such as protagonists Jake Sully and Neytiri, as well as the villainous Colonel Quaritch. Sigourney Weaver is one of the biggest name actors in the first Avatar, meaning that her being part of the returning cast of Avatar 2 isn't surprising.

Avatar: The Way of Water star Stephen Lang explains how his villain character Quaritch is brought back from the dead for the long-awaited sequel. Lang’s Quaritch certainly made a memorable bad guy when he first appeared in James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar. A member of the militaristic Rda, Quaritch helped menace the peace-loving Na’vi of the moon Pandora, until meeting a fitting end when Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri shot him through the heart with one of her giant arrows.
And that seemingly was the last audiences would ever see of Quaritch. But surprisingly, when casting for Avatar 2 was being revealed, Lang’s name was indeed on the roster. And later it was confirmed that Lang would be returning as the dead Quartich. Fans were left to wonder how Lang’s vanquished Rda bad guy could possibly be back after taking an arrow through the heart in the original Avatar.

James Cameron had the Avatar: The Way of Water cast undergo rigorous underwater training in order to hold their breaths for several minutes. Much of the original cast from 2009's Avatar has returned for the upcoming sequel subtitled The Way of Water, including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, Cch Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald. Newcomers include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Cowell, and Vin Diesel.
Since some of the Avatar sequel's scenes take place in the oceans of Pandora, Cameron and his team developed new technology to actually film performance capture underwater, which led to several production delays as they worked on accomplishing this unprecedented feat. Shooting these underwater scenes also required the actors to hold their breaths for extended periods of time. Winslet, who plays a free diver in Avatar: The Way of Water,...

This article contains spoilers for Marvel’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law episode 8
Ever since the first trailer for Jessica Gao’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law came out, there’s one talking point that’s been dominating the conversation. In fact, ever since Netflix cancelled the last of its Defenders shows in 2019, there’s been talk about when Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Punisher, and all the rest will be superhero landing into the mainline Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When it comes to She-Hulk, the trailer didn’t bother wasting our time by trying to hide Matt Murdock like Spider-Man: No Way Home did. Still, after a tantalising tease at the end of episode 5, we were more than a little bummed it took another three weeks before we got Daredevil’s introduction. The return of Charlie Cox’s Man Without Fear was music to our ears (quite literally) in the latest episode of She-Hulk,...

Following the groundbreaking release of “Avatar” in 2009, James Cameron’s epic sci-fi franchise about a humanoid species called the Na’vi is finally back with the first of several sequels. After a 13-year gap, the saga will pick up with “Avatar: The Way of Water” in December before continuing on with what are currently being dubbed “Avatar 3”, “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” in 2024, 2026 and 2028, respectively.
Stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and others look back on the original while teasing what’s to come as “The Way of Water” picks up on their story over a decade later.
“It’s been about 10 years,” Weaver tells Et of the time she’s committed to the franchise since starring in the first one. “And then, in the meantime, Jim Cameron has written four amazing stories about what is now a family, the Sully family. And so, the stakes are higher. There are more amazing characters.

Director James Cameron’s long-awaited “Avatar: The Way of Water” closed out the Marvel, Lucasfilm and 20th Century panel at the D23 Expo Saturday by handing out 3-D glasses to everyone in the audience and showing off six extended scenes from the movie.
The new clips weren’t released online, but stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang and producer Jon Landau were there in person to introduce the footage. Cameron appeared virtually to debut the exclusive D23 clips, which were richly detailed and made extensive and impressive use of 3-D technology. Surprisingly, however, Cameron did not provide any advance context for what the D23 Expo audience was about to see: No explanation about who the new characters are, what their relationships are to each other, or how each scene connects to the larger story. Indeed, whatever the larger story is for “The Way of Water” remains rather unclear after the presentation,...
