ReviewThough actors including Santosh Sobhan and Malavika try their best to make the story engaging, the performances alone cannot compensate for the wafer-thin plotline.Director Nandini Reddy’s Anni Manchi Sakunamule starts off with a unique and promising sequence, telling the tale of two families and a conflict between them over a coffee estate. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take much time for the film to slip into a cliche trope that becomes the focal point of the story, causing you to lose all interest. The only motivation to watch the film from here on is curiosity — will Nandini be able to redeem the film with her own take on a story that has been done to death in the Telugu film industry? The film’s protagonist, Rishi (Santosh Sobhan), is free-spirited and believes in ‘living in the moment’, a luxury he can afford because of his rich father. His father,...

ReviewGunasekhar’s ‘Shaakuntalam’ offers nothing new in terms of interpretation or presentation, and is content to stretch a simplistic version of the myth of Shakuntala to the length of a feature film. YouTube/Tips TeluguIn his famous poem ‘No Amnesiac King’, Ak Ramanujan writes: “One knows by now one is no amnesiac king, whatever mother may say or child believe. One cannot wait any more in the back of one's mind for that conspiracy…” The ‘amnesiac king’ here is Dushyanta, a righteous ruler who ‘forgets’ his wife due to a sage’s curse, and leaves her to fend for herself. In mythology, this conspiracy is the subject of a bittersweet romance as is often the case when there is a wronged woman at the centre of a story. She is pure and pristine, and eventually, the universe proves her right because of her virtue, and the man recognises the value of her womanhood.

If we rewind to exactly 25 years ago, we are transported to a time when private Tamil television (Sun TV) was only five years old and standalone theatres were still mostly the only place where we courted the stars. As it turns out, 1997 was a distinctive and extraordinary year for Tamil cinema. There was no shortage of critically acclaimed movies or blockbusters. TollywoodThe web series platform is offering women directors and artistes opportunities to break freePriyanka RichiIn a territory dominated by testosterone-driven potboilers, the Telugu audience have something new on offer: the coming-of-age web series. What adds greater zest to these ‘girl-next-door’ web flicks are the women donning many hats behind and on the screen, increasingly capturing the online space and shattering many stereotypes that the regional film industries have set for eons. Creating the ‘everyday woman’ For Jahnavi Dasetty, a Nift student from Kurnool, acting was always a passion. After a couple of short-film stints, Jahnavi got her first break through Mahathalli-Mahanubhavudu (produced by Wirally South) that instantly hit a chord with the audience. The web series reflects reality laced with humour, and Jahnavi in Mahathalli dons the many hats of a script-writer, director and an actor. “My parents were initially unhappy with the decision. But now, as Mahathalli has become a household name, they appreciate the progress,” Jahnavi says. For Jahnavi, the characters in Mahathalli (now a YouTube channel run by Wirally) are the women you meet in your everyday life. “While working forMahathalli-Mahanubhavudu, I always dreamt of making a Tollywood version of the Superwoman. Only after a year into the production of Mahathallidid I realise that Mahathalli in Telugu means ‘superwoman’,"Jahnavi confesses. Jahnavi Dasetty The web series medium has created a splash by depicting strong women characters, especially for an audience which has been bombarded with doe-eyed bahus in designer sarees, struggling against evil relatives in logic-defying plot twists. “Web series give writers the time and space to convey ideas with greater ease. For example, Seshamma from Posh Poris, was crafted with so much detail that for Aditi Myakal, who played the role, Seshamma has become a second identity,” says Gautami Challagula, who has cemented her position as a web-series specialist with Posh Poris, Social and Manna Muguri Love Story. “Women share very special bonds in their personal lives which rarely get depicted on screen. So, my girl-gangs are women who are like men in Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara and Dil Chahta Hain - they share a buddy-comical relationship," she adds. Gautami Challagula After her seven-year stint in an It company, Gautami pursued her post-graduation in Communication. Her final year thesis focused on woman-relationships portrayed on screen. “Until the 2000s, Telugu films like Ladies Special, Swarnakamalam, Ninne Pelledata had women who conversed about their everyday struggles. But of late, there are very few movies that pass the Bechdel test,” Gautami points out. Sketching characters Though popular comedy sketch group channels like the All India Bhakchod (Aib) and The Viral Fever (Tvf) proclaim themselves to be pro-women and feminist, an analysis of their online content shows minimal portrayal of women characters on-screen. Women are confined to the role of a homemaker or a crazy colleague among ten other male characters. “The onus to create strong women characters lies with the script writers and they are often men. Web series have managed to create a positive stride with a lot of women working on and behind the screens,” says Sri Vidya, who is part of the all-girls channel ‘Girl Formula’ on the online entertainment content provider, Chai Bisket. Girls Formula was born after the girl-gang made a video Naa Saavu Nenu Chasta - a girl’s version of an already existing video on Chai Bisket. And, with the success of the video, the idea of an all-girls channel that would break women-related taboos was born. “In Hindi, we have very bold content on women being produced and the audience is also quite receptive. But while doing videos in regional languages, one must keep in mind the sensibilities of our audience,” Sri Vidya says. Sri Vidya The challenges Though web series give directors greater freedom, the challenge to gain attention is bigger compared to movies. “People often watch online content in their personal spaces unlike movies which give them a collective experience. With the legion of content available online, the task to capture people’s attention within the first 5 minutes into a video is quite a challenge," says Nandini Reddy, writer and creative head of Gangstars, Amazon Primes’s first Telugu web series. With a star cast of Navdeep, Shweta Basu Prasad and Sidhu Jonnalagadda, the series had opened to positive reviews. Nandini Reddy Nandini Reddy, who also has critically acclaimed movies like Ala Modalaindi and Kalyana Vaibhogame to her credit, does not believe in creating content to preach. “Content makers are not perfect human beings with morals to preach to their audiences. Online content has made a distinction with its raw portrayal of flawed humans, people with whom the viewers can identify,” she says. Creating content online comes with the additional baggage of haters, and it's the women artistes who are often at the receiving end of such abusive comments. “Though a lot of viewers drop in congratulatory notes and positive feedback, body-shaming is an issue that every woman faces on-screen. Its demoralising despite the change in notions we try conveying on-screen,” says Jahnavi Dasetty. The flexibility to explore One of the many advantages of web series over movies is the absence of a censor board, says Nandini Reddy. “Lust Stories, a Netflix original that explores women’s sexuality, would have been shelved if it was to pass off as a movie. Web series also attract investors who experiment with novel content, being assured of decent returns under a minimum budget," she adds. But for Jahnavi Dasetty, a watch over the language is necessary as a lot of regional web content is also consumed by children. “Mahathalli has a wide audience that includes homemakers, senior citizens and children as well. Humour doesn’t necessarily require vulgar language,” Jahanvi opines. “Web series will eventually find a bigger market and can generate more revenue than their television counterparts. Maybe then, the latter medium will start thinking about reinventing itself,” says Gautami.

Kollywood While Subbalakshmi's role in the film awaits confirmation, conflicting reports say that Shalini Pandey could bag the role. Digital NativePhoto provided by DNThe shoot of Bala’s Varma, the Tamil remake of Arjun Reddy, has been going at brisk pace. Announced last November, reliable sources say that the shoot began in Kathmandu, Nepal last week. The team has successfully wrapped up the first schedule after shooting some important scenes and recently returned to Chennai. The film marks the debut of Vikram’s son Dhruv, who will reprise Vijay Deverakonda’s role of an alcoholic medical surgeon. The makers are yet to zero in on the female lead. According to latest reports however, actor Gautami’s daughter Subbalakshmi is said to have bagged the opportunity. While that is yet to confirmed, some reports also suggest that Bala has decided to go with Shalini Pandey as she’s already played the role in Arjun Reddy, and was appreciated for it. An official announcement regarding the final cast can be expected very soon. Filmmaker Raju Murugan, known for helming films such as Cuckoo and Joker, has been signed to pen the dialogues. The project is being bankrolled by E4 Entertainment, producers of popular Malayalam films such as Ezra and Godha. Vikram had hinted in the past that his son will eventually follow in his footsteps. However, he wasn’t sure whether he’d be interested in acting or direction. Last year, Dhruv directed a short film called Goodnight Charlie, that was about child abuse within a family. When the film came out, many assumed that he wanted to be director and would enter the industry as one. It’s surprising then that he has decided to don the greasepaint. It won’t be an easy debut considering the high expectations people will have from the remake, thanks to the popularity of Arjun Reddy’s character which was a contemporary take on Devdas, and explored love and suffering. ControversyGautami had recently alleged that Raaj Kamal Films International (Rkfi) had failed to settle her dues for working as a costume designer.Digital NativeDigital NativeActor Gautami, who was in a relationship with Ulaga Nayagan Kamal Haasan for nearly 13 years, recently alleged that the production house run by him failed to settle her dues for working as a costume designer in films such as Vishwaroopam and Dasavathaaram. Gautami had posted in her blog, “During the nearly thirteen years of our life together, the work that I did as Costume Designer was only for films produced by Raaj Kamal Films International (Rkfi), and for films that Mr. Haasan made for other producers. And this was my primary source of income as my working both in front of and behind the camera in other’s projects was actively discouraged. In addition to this, it grieves me greatly to have to say that as of October 2016, I had salary dues pending right from earlier films like Dasavathaaram, Vishwaroopam, etc.” Gautami’s blog post further said that repeated efforts to recover her dues from Rkfi failed. “I am deeply anguished to say that in spite of repeated entreaties and requests, there is still a significant amount from my due salary pending payment,” it said. In a clarification to her allegations about unpaid dues, Raaj Kamal Films International has stated that both Dasavathaaram as well as Vishwaroopam were bankrolled by different production houses and Kamal has nothing to do with her payments in that regard. While Dasavathaaram was produced by Aascar Ravichandran under his banner Aascar Films, Vishwaroopam was bankrolled by Pvp Cinemas, claim sources from Rkfi. Seeking evidence regarding the veracity of Gautami’s claims, sources close to Kamal assured that any unpaid dues would be settled if she provided enough proof. It may be mentioned here that Gautami had worked as costume designer for several of Kamal Haasan’s films and she last shared screen space with him in Papanasam, which is the Tamil remake of the Malayalam blockbuster Drishyam which starred Mohanlal and Meena. MollywoodFrom Mammootty in 'Dhruvam' to Nivin Pauly in 'Premam', here's a list worth looking at!By Nita In Valentine’s Day week, we bring you some of our favourite scenes from Malayalam cinema where couples have expressed their love for each other. These are the scenes that have touched our hearts and thrilled us to bits, making us fall in love with the heroes and heroines. Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal Heroes may come and heroes may go, but few hold our hearts like Solomon (Mohanlal) in this Padamarajan classic. Even for firmly urban people like us, if ever a Solomon looked into our eyes, like the man in question did into Sophia’s (Shari) and uttered poetically: ‘Namukku gramamgalil chennu raapakkam; Athikalathezhunettu munthirithottangalil poyi muthirivallikal thalirthu poovidarukayum, mathalanarakam pookukayum cheytho ennu nokkam…’ (Let’s go live in the villages; let’s wake up early and go to the vineyards, let’s discover whether the vines have blossomed and the pomegranates are in bloom…) Hell, yeah! Sign us up for love in the vineyards. Dhruvam To pay off her father’s debt, Mythili (Gautami), an impoverished young woman leaves all her worldly belongings at the doorstep of the high and mighty Narasimha Mannadiar (Mammotty). This is the scene where the benevolent Mannadiar becomes her personal knight in shining armour. In the midst of berating her, Mannadiar proposes to Mythili and knocks the wind out of her sails – and ours too! Goosebump worthy. Thenmavin Kombathu Manickyan (Mohanlal) and Karthumbi (Shobana) get off on the wrong foot and this is the scene where the two finally find each other. Director Priyadarsan builds up to the proposal scene through a comedy of errors that includes the duo dodging goons, getting lost in the jungle, being tied up by tribals and fleeing for their lives. Who knew that Manickyan’s imperious ‘Aaru Karkichu thuppi?’ dialogue when they first meet would quickly end up in ‘Porunno ente koode?’ (Do you want to come with me?). Sigh. Angamaly Diaries Few proposals have wowed us with their brilliance as Lijo Jose Pellishery did in his raw and rustic take on life in Angamaly. Late one tipsy night, Lichi (Reshma Anna Rajan), perhaps the only level-headed one in the tale, proposes to her ‘Cherukkan’- her younger friend Pepe (Anthony Varghese), taking him by surprise and the audience as well. The way Pepe’s eyes light up and the way he smiles at her in wonder you know that he’s ready to abandon his dream of a life in Germany and follow Lichi to the ends of the world. Ohm Shanthi Oshaana Pooja (Nazriya Nazim) is headed for disappointment but you cheer on the young go-getter as she follows Giri (Nivin Pauly) to his secret bolt hole up in the hills, to propose to him. Giri rebuffs her teenage dreams but it’s that gentle rejection that makes Pooja even more determined. The icing on the cake is Giri’s proposal Pooja in the climax: the same setting, the same words and their very own happily ever after. Sanmanasullavarkku Samadhanam Sub Inspector Rajendran (Sreenivasan) is desperate to show his crush Meera (Karthika) that underneath his (supposed) tough cop armour is the heart of a poet, an artist and a singer. He then proceeds to sing his proposal to the bewildered Meera and Malayalam cinema gets the hit comedy number ‘Pavizhamalli Poothulanja Neelavanam…’ Snap out of it bro, you’re never gonna get her. Premam So, love does not come with the first bite of red velvet cake, as George (Nivin Pauly) finds out with Celine (Madonna Sebastian). It takes a couple of red velvet cakes and a proposal that is offered a bit too late. Post the Malar episode, George is still mad at the world but when he sees Celine something clicks (maybe it’s the eyes?) and he finally musters up the courage to propose to her. Only she is already engaged. Back to square one for George – for now. Adhipan Love comes calling in the Ferrari of the times - a Maruti 800. The dashing hero, criminal lawyer Shyam Prakash (Mohanlal once again; someone knows his proposal scenes!) chances upon lady love, the veterinarian’s daughter, Radhika (Parvathy Jayaram), on the road and figures out that it's the perfect time to apologise for pestering her. He follows it up with a self introduction and an equally suave declaration of love. Need anything more for Radhika to get stars in her eyes? Bangalore Days A conflicted Arjun (Dulquer Salmaan) takes Sarah (Parvathy) out, after several days of avoiding her. Sarah does not know that it's because of her mother that Arjun had stayed away. She doesn't understand his reluctance, sensing that he is interested in her. Her face lights up when he shows her the wall art he's made but she's disppointed once again by his unwillingness to share his emotions with her. This article was first published on Fullpicture.in. KollywoodIt's true Jyothika quit films to get married but the trailer for 'Naachiyar' suggests that the actor is not letting marriage or motherhood define her career.Sowmya RajendranFacebook/JyoSuriyaThe trailer for Bala's upcoming thriller Naachiyar shows Jyothika playing a rough and tough cop who brooks no nonsense. The teaser for the film, which saw the actor mouthing a common sexist and casteist cuss word, had sent ripples across social media, with several people objecting not to the word in particular, but to the gender of the person uttering it. The trailer suggests that Jyothika has transformed herself into a character she has never played before – not just the cop role but how she's playing it. The aggression is distinctly different from the cutesy, "bubbly" roles that defined her career when she was acting with the industry's top heroes. Jyothika, who made her debut with Priyadarshan's 1998 Hindi film Doli Saja Ke Rakhna, entered the Tamil industry with Vaali. In the film, she was the whimsical creation of a young man (Ajith) trying to impress a woman (Simran) with a fake love story. The O Sona girl, the half-sister of Nagma – who had done superhit films like Baasha and Kadhalan – became quickly popular. The 2000 film Kushi, in which she starred with Vijay, made her a big hit with the audience. Jyothika in Vaali In her first stint, Jyothika was known for her expressive eyes and over-the-top gestures (in a recent interview, the actor said that in those days, she was "over-acting" and not acting). The "loosu ponnu", the south Indian version of the manic pixie, was becoming the most favoured characterisation for heroines in mainstream Tamil films. The "feminine innocence" of the yesteryear heroine was further infantilised to create a child-woman whose "enthusiasm" and exaggerated gestures passed off as "cute". As the next generation of heroes after Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan became larger-than-life and turned into demi-gods, the women they pursued on screen were increasingly relegated to song and dance sequences which would be preceded by a "romance" track. Jyothika, who is frequently described as "bubbly", played several such roles; but she also made some interesting career choices. In Rhythm, for instance, she signed up to play a married woman who dies in a train accident. The same year saw the release of Snegithiye, a thriller which had only women actors in lead roles – a proposition that's still considered risky in Kollywood. Jyothika also experimented with genres when given the opportunity, doing films like the adventure fantasy Little John (in which she starred with American actor Bentley Mitchum), Perazhagan (in which she played a dual role, one of which was the visually challenged, de-glamourised Shenbagam), June R (which is about a young woman who "adopts" a mother) and Mozhi (her portrayal of a hearing and speech impaired woman won her the Tamil Nadu State Film Award). In Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, she played a single mom who attempts suicide because of a failed relationship, while in Pachaikili Muthucharam, she played the villain – a woman who seduces men and blackmails them for money. To be sure, Jyothika's acting wasn't on par with the likes of woman actors like Sridevi, Revathi, Gautami, Madhavi, Urvashi and many others who had ruled the screen before her time. She didn't have their versatility, but she remained likable to the audience, succeeding especially in romantic films like Dum Dum Dum and Sillinu Oru Kadhal. Her character in Gautham Menon's Kaakha Kaakha, which established Suriya (whom she would eventually marry) as a star to reckon with, is still remembered by many as among her best. Fans of Suriya and Jo will swear that the couple, who acted together in seven films, shared the best on screen chemistry. Jyothika had acted with both Kamal Haasan (Tenali, Vetaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu) and Rajinikanth (Chandramukhi was a massive hit) and all the younger stars (Vijay, Vikram, Suriya, Prashanth, Madhavan) by the time she predictably called it quits to marry Suirya in 2006. Her comeback to cinema with 36 Vayadhiniley, the remake of the Malayalam film How Old Are You, saw the actor asserting herself and being vocal about women characters on screen. While many have appreciated her for speaking up, several have also cast aspersions on her intentions, believing her statements to be "marketing" for her films. Many have also been dismissive of her return to cinema, accusing her of sticking to doing vanilla, 'feel-good' films that use feminism as a crutch. But going by what we've seen so far of Naachiyaar, Jyothika seems determined to stay and do so on her own terms. She isn't playing to attract the family audience, she's looking to establish herself as a "mass" star, the one who is greeted by wild cheers and loud whistles. While we've had actors like Vijayshanti who have ably performed fight sequences, a woman swearing and wearing her aggression on her sleeves – and being welcomed for it – is new. While mainstream Tamil cinema is still dominated by male star vehicles, we're seeing some interesting changes in characterising the female hero – whether that's Jyothika in Magalir Mattum, Nayanthara in Aramm and Dora or Revathi in Gulaebaghavali. They get "mass" moments, the hero walk, and even punch dialogues. What's more, the audience seems to be lapping it up, at least in the metros. Bollywood has its Vidya Balan and Kangana Ranaut. In the south, actors like Nayanthara, Trisha, Anushka Shetty, and Jyothika have reached a certain phase in their career when they are confident that their name on the title cards alone can bring audiences to the theatres. And they seem to be finding producers and directors who are willing to take a chance, too. It's too early to pass any judgment about Naachiyaar, but one can safely say that the film is a sign of the times; even if it turns out to be terrible, it still signals the arrival of an exciting moment in Tamil cinema as far as gender is concerned. We're finally going to see a woman actor do her job, minus the baggage of marriage and motherhood dictating the roles she's "allowed" to do.
