Paramount Pictures had good reason to believe Adrian Lyne's "Fatal Attraction" would be another box office smash for the hit-making studio (which had just dominated 1986 with five of the ten highest-grossing movies of that year — including the top two in "Top Gun" and "Crocodile Dundee"), but they couldn't have anticipated the film becoming a full-blown, adult-skewing blockbuster. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller about an extramarital fling that turns into a waking nightmare for the happily married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) outperformed such heavy hitters as "Beverly Hills Cop II," "The Untouchables," and "Lethal Weapon" to become the second highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind the four-quadrant behemoth "Three Men and a Baby").
Why was the film such a pop cultural sensation? Every single element clicked perfectly into place. Lyne brought the sensual heat, James Dearden's screenplay tightened the screws with nerve-jangling precision, and the stars absolutely smoldered. Douglas and Glenn Close...

Exclusive: Ryan Murphy is quickly expanding his footprint on ABC. The network has given a straight-to-series order to his Doctor Odyssey, with Joshua Jackson set to play the lead and executive produce. The drama, targeted for a fall launch, hails from 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television.
As is the case with any Ryan Murphy series, no details about the premise are being revealed. As the title suggests, Doctor Odyssey is believed to be a medical procedural. According to sources, it is set on a cruise ship. That was the setting for this season’s disaster-themed opener of Murphy’s procedural 9-1-1 in its debut on ABC, and it also harkens back to TV classic The Love Boat.

“If you ever come near my family again, I’ll kill you. Do you understand?”
We’ve all heard the phrase “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” We pull it out when we see a woman reacting to the hurtful choices of a romantic partner, standing up for herself after rejection, or really expressing any kind of powerful emotions at all. It’s a bon mot so pervasive that it makes you wonder if there are any men in hell. Maybe it’s all just hysterical women pulling hair and trying to steal each other’s boyfriends. Regardless of this reductive phrase and dehumanizing stereotype, few films in the history of cinema explore the concept of the scorned woman like Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction. This cautionary tale about infidelity and revenge pits two women against each other for the love of one man with a surprising female killer emerging from the wreckage.

In the last three years, Joshua Jackson has played a husband and father with his home life in chaos in Little Fires Everywhere, a murderous surgeon in Dr. Death and, now, adulterer and accused murderer Dan Gallagher — the role originated by Michael Douglas in 1987’s Fatal Attraction — in the Paramount+ series adaptation of the film that debuted at the end of April.

“Fatal Attraction” production designer Nina Ruscio’s visual challenge was taking on an iconic movie, paying homage to it and finding a way to put her creative stamp on it by taking it into 2023.
In the eight-part Paramount+ series, Joshua Jackson stars as Dan Gallagher with Lizzy Caplan as Alex Forrest, roles originated by Michael Douglas and Glenn Close in the original film. And while it’s not a remake, the creative team stressed, it’s an expanded adaptation that provides more insight into Alex’s behavior after an affair with a married man drives her to obsession. The series covers Alex’s struggles with her mental health, but it’s also an erotic thriller.
To tap into Ruscio’s behavior and show her state of mind, Ruscio paid close attention to Alex’s apartment. In contrast, Dan’s world was rooted in the courtroom.

Human pride can be considered of the seven deadly sins because not even God’s favorite was spared from this cardinal flaw. This is one such trait that finds its way into people who are exceptionally good at what they do and bubble with confidence after a long stretch of good luck. However, some time or other, this luck runs out, and what follows is so horrible that people regret the pride that got them in that position. Da Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson) in Paramount’s Fatal Attraction TV series was a man who fell prey to the same cardinal sin that got God’s favorite angel cast out. Dan’s pride and his enormous arrogance resulted in his life being turned upside down, although there was a little lust mixed in there. The way Dan’s life went into shambles, one can only think that it was fate that...

Paramount’s reimagining of the 1987 thriller Fatal Attraction as a TV series has been an engaging ride for the past few weeks. The seventh episode of the show was released today, and we see the trial of Da Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson) as he stands in court accused of murdering Alex Forrest (Lizzy Caplan). Nina Ruscio remembers seeing the blockbuster psychosexual thriller “Fatal Attraction” when it was released in 1987 and the controversy that followed it, the “deep psychic weight” and “issues of misogyny and mental health” that surrounded the hit about marriage and infidelity that starred Michael Douglas, Glenn Close and Anne Archer. “It crossed a lot of the wires of psychic intensity at the time,” she recalls. So when the opportunity arose for Ruscio to serve as the production designer on the new eight-part “Fatal Attraction” reboot for Paramount+, she knew that if she signed on, there was some risk she’d find herself in the middle of a new firestorm. But she trusted her instincts in saying yes.

The previous episode left us guessing whose blood could be in Alex Forrest’s apartment after Dan assaulted her, and it’s confirmed in this episode that the police suspect it to be Alex’s blood, and they hold Dan responsible. Few women in cinematic history have been vilified so much as Alex Forrest. Played by Glenn Close, this wild and seductive career woman terrorizes her married lover, Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas), after a weekend fling in the mother of all erotic thrillers "Fatal Attraction." The original Alex is the epitome of a femme fatale and embodies the saying, "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." Released in 1987, Adrian Lyne's film has been reevaluated through the lens of modern sexual politics, with a much more sympathetic reappraisal of Alex's character and a refusal to see Dan as the story's hapless victim. A reboot from creators Kevin J. Hynes and Alexandra Cunningham attempts to reckon with this complicated legacy in an eight-part series starring Lizzy Caplan and Joshua Jackson as the toxic lovers.

Lizzy Caplan as Alex Forrest and Joshua Jackson as Dan Gallagher in Fatal Attraction streaming on Paramount+ 2022. Photo credit: Monty Brinton/Paramount+ In the new version of Fatal Attraction, the 1987 movie is reimagined as a TV series, with a few subtle changes to reflect today’s viewing audience. But the basic premise remains the same: A married man gets involved in an affair with a dangerous woman, with unintended and unseemly consequences. Lizzy Caplan plays the part of the femme fatale, which earned Glenn Close an Oscar nomination for the original film. As she was preparing to play the role, Caplan told us she spent a lot of time figuring out all the things Close did so well. Although Alex Forrest, Lizzy Caplan’s character in the Paramount+ series, commits even worse crimes than Glenn Close did in the 1987 movie, Caplan doesn’t see Alex as a villain.
TheWrap spoke to the actress and the series showrunner, Alexandra Cunningham about how they — and the series itself — views Alex more sympathetically, despite the “unforgivable things, villainous things,” she does after lawyer Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson) ends their brief affair. Video of the interview can be seen above.
As Glenn Close told the New York Times in 2017, “Now she’s considered one of the greatest villains ever. That to me is a mistake. I’ve never thought of her as a villain, just in distress.”

The fourth episode of Showtime’s passion project, the TV series version of the 1987 thriller Fatal Attraction, dropped today, and it’s as interesting and engaging as all three of its previous episodes. So far, we’ve seen Da Dan Gallagher’s affair with Alex Forrest go sour, following which Alex, who’s clearly unhinged, did some rather shocking things to get Dan’s attention. In this episode, we witness a member of Dan’s family almost dying, and if it’s proven that this was Alex’s doing, we’ll know beyond a doubt that not even murder is beneath her to get what she wants.

Joshua Jackson became a dad in 2020, and the experience has shaped how he approaches his onscreen characters - and even has the actor revisiting his past performances. While speaking to Popsugar about Paramount+'s streaming reboot of "Fatal Attraction," Jackson reflects on a previous project that also dissected an extramarital rendezvous: "The Affair."
In the first four seasons of the Showtime drama, Jackson starred as Cole Lockhart, a Long Island man grappling with the death of his young son, Gabriel, by secondary drowning - as well as the even more recent betrayal of his wife, Alison, who has embarked on a messy affair.
"Being a father now, and looking back at that performance that had a man who had lost a child, my portrayal of that would be very different now."

Decades after its release and six Oscar nominations later, the enduring image associated with 1987's hit thriller "Fatal Attraction" is, for many, a boiled bunny. Enraged by her married partner's decision to call off their brief affair, Alex Forrest (played by Glenn Close) attempts to send a message to Dan Gallagher by cooking his child's pet bunny. The cinematic moment spawned a new term for a jilted paramour but didn't deeply examine why someone would take such drastic actions.
Now, with the embracing of the antihero onscreen and the real-life push for mental health conversations to be shrouded in less stigma, entertainment media is painting a fuller picture of why people make the decisions they do - and that's obvious in Paramount+'s "Fatal Attraction" streaming reboot.

Glenn Close has made her thoughts on Fatal Attraction known in the conversation around the legacy of the iconic 1987 film that co-starred herself and Michael Douglas.
Reading about Close’s character work, the original (and then retooled) ending to the erotic thriller and Close’s wishes that the Oscar-nominated film had explored more of Alex Forrest’s mental illness, instead of labeling her with extreme villainy, are all partly what inspired Alexandra Cunningham to agree to adapt the movie into the Fatal Attraction limited series that has now begun streaming on Paramount+.
“[Close has] always said that if anyone was going to do [a remake], that she hoped someone would dig deeper into Alex’s point of view and her motivations,” Cunningham told The Hollywood Reporter (in an interview that took place before the Writers Guild of America went on strike).
So when the showrunner heard through a mutual connection — the show’s hair department head,...

Everyone who has loved thrillers from the 1980s will recall the Michael Douglas-Glenn Close starrer, the 1987 thriller “Fatal Attraction.” It showed how a weekend of passion beyond the sanctity of marriage led to a family coming to the verge of destruction when the scorned Alex Forrest decided she wanted Dan Gallagher all for herself, even if it meant killing his wife. Paramount+ has brought us the reimagined version of the story with Joshua Jackson and Lizzy Caplan as Dan and Alex, with a handful of other talented cast members making up the show. The series is engaging and interesting and shows the way a disbalanced woman’s brain functions. The story is told with a lot of back-and-forths, going back and returning to the present, but to aid you readers, let’s look at the events that transpire in the present day.

Fatal Attraction is an iconic part of cinema. Adrian Lyne’s thriller starring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close topped the box office charts after it released in 1987 to become the second-highest-grossing film of the year. It earned six Oscar nominations, inspired decades of stalker movies and, in recent years, has been revisited in think pieces around the retooled ending, sparked by Close speaking out about ways the film didn’t do right by her character, Alex Forrest.
“When they asked me to do it, obviously I was like, ‘I’m not going to do that. That sounds absolutely terrifying,'” Alexandra Cuningham tells The Hollywood Reporter of adapting the movie for TV. “I was thinking, I’ll just watch the movie again so that I’m being a good citizen when I send the email saying I’m not gonna do it. Then, you get sucked in.

Paramount+’s Fatal Attraction series shows us the first embers of an illicit affair… but it also shows us the damage it can cause once it catches fire.
Sunday’s premiere opens with former lawyer Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson) sporting a scraggly beard and facing a parole board after spending 15 years in prison for second-degree murder. He shares his deep remorse for killing a woman named Alex Forrest: “I chose to lose control. I chose to take her life.” All he wants is to be able to reconnect with his family — and his daughter Ellen (Alyssa Jirrels) is in the room watching.

“Fatal Attraction” is a story about hubris. Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson), a high-powered LA County prosecutor, lives a life of means. He’s inherited the de facto family business, he has a loving wife and daughter, and he can escape precarious legal situations with a well-placed phone call or two. Then, a woman enters his life who he can’t ignore: Alex Forrest (Lizzy Caplan), a member of the Victim Services team who ends up in the same courthouse hallways Dan patrols on a daily basis.
You don’t need to have seen a single movie from the 1980s to know that “Fatal Attraction” is also the story of an affair, one that plays out roughly the way it does in the film on which the Paramount+ series is based. Innocent-enough interactions quickly add up to Dan and Alex in bed together. Dan tries to end things and pretend their romantic few days never happened.

Fatal Attraction — which wheezes back to life as a series starring Joshua Jackson and Lizzy Caplan, premiering April 30 on Paramount+ — began as the 1979 short Diversion, about a one-night stand gone haywire, which writer-director James Dearden fleshed out into a feature screenplay.
With contributions from Nicholas Meyer (writer-director of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan), Paramount producers Stanley R. Jaffe and Sherry Lansing were convinced they had a viable erotic thriller on their hands. The script tells the story of Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas), a married New York lawyer who has what he thinks is no-strings sex with Alex Forrest (Glenn Close), a publishing executive, while his wife, Beth (Anne Archer), and daughter are out of town. How wrong he is. Alex quickly becomes dangerously obsessed with Dan and the wife who stands in her way. The rest — from Alex’s “I’m not going to be ignored, Dan” to...

Lizzy Caplan is lying. Well, let’s rephrase that: Lizzy Caplan is selectively truth-telling. Lounging in a gray Texas Longhorns T-shirt and yellow-green leggings, Caplan has such a stripped-down, let’s-talk-about-it approachability, you would think we were having a late-night sleepover chat instead of a cross-continental Zoom. The famed IP is getting the series treatment, which allows for a much deeper dive into the story and its characters.
Like you, we have IP refreshing and reboot fatigue, but we've seen Fatal Attraction Season 1 in its entirety and believe that further exploration has merits.
Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson) is an attorney on the cusp of a significant promotion. He's happily married to Beth (Amanda Peet), and the couple has a lovely daughter, Ellen.
But as bright as Dan's life seems on the outside, he's riddled with self-doubt when an opportunity slips through his fingers, and he begins looking outside of his family for validation.
Dan finds that validation in Alex Forrest (Lizzy Caplan), a coworker with an understanding of his professional pressures because she faces the same.

A curious Anne Archer lifts the lid off of a boiling pot only to discover the body of her young daughter’s mangled and bloated bunny. It’s a film scene that still echoes in the minds of cinephiles and physiological thriller enthusiasts alike. However, unlike the 1987 film starring Archer, Michael Douglas and the incomparable Glenn Close, Paramount+’s new series, “Fatal Attraction,” is void of boiled mammals. What it does have is a more intricately fleshed-out narrative of a pompous and ambitious district attorney Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson), whose tawdry affair with a young woman, Alexandra Forrest (Lizzy Caplan), quickly spirals out of his control.
“Dirty John” creator Alexandra Cunningham and writer Kevin J. Hynes’ series opens in the present day in Los Angeles, with a frazzled and bearded Dan pleading his case for parole. He’s served 15 years for killing Alex, a crime he attests to, before being granted his freedom.

Based on the classic 1987 psychological thriller starring Glenn Close and Michael Douglas, Paramount+’s new limited series Fatal Attraction will feature Lizzy Caplan (Fleishman Is in Trouble) in the role of Alex Forrest, an unstable woman who becomes dangerously obsessed after an affair with a married man, Dan Gallagher, played by Joshua Jackson (Dawson’s Creek). The show’s creators and actors are looking to bring more detail to the original story, which they say took a too black-and-white view of events. “If you watch the movie again, I find it very, very difficult to see Alex as a straight villain,” Caplan says. “You have to ask, ‘Well, what’s going on with her?’ And also, ‘What about consequences for him?’” To answer those questions, the series delves deeper into Alex’s perspective and the potential mental illness driving her actions. The show also follows two timelines: the tragic events we...

The reshot ending of Adrian Lyne’s 1987 Fatal Attraction is one of the most successful blunders in Hollywood history.
Sure, turning Glenn Close’s scorned Alex Forrest into a nearly unkillable slasher villain undermined anything that was thematically interesting about the character and the movie. But it also produced a rousing climax that left bloodthirsty audiences cheering and helped make Fatal Attraction a blockbuster.
The conclusion so violated the setup of James Dearden’s script that it isn’t a surprise we’re being treated to a long-form re-conception of Fatal Attraction; it’s a surprise that it took so long.
“There’s only one way for something to end,” Alex (Lizzy Caplan) asserts in the eighth and final episode of Paramount+’s Fatal Attraction. “There’s only one decision to make. How are you going to get to that ending?”

Joshua Jackson has no problem talking about sex. In our time together, he doesn’t blush when referencing a woman’s nipples or breaking down how two people “fuck” on television. He’s been viewed as a sex symbol since he was a teen, playing the class-clown-turned-heartthrob Pacey Witter on “Dawson’s Creek,” and now it’s just who he is.
And it’s a very big part of “Fatal Attraction.” “The sex scenes are of great importance,” says Jackson, 44, “because they’re furthering the narrative. You have to believe that these people want to fuck each other.” The series, which premieres on Paramount+ on April 30, doesn’t shy away from the kind of nudity that Hollywood used to pepper R-rated adult movies with in the ’70s and ’80s.

Even the cast and creative team behind Fatal Attraction know it’s a tall task to remake the hit 1987 film as a Paramount+ series, and admit to all having hesitations when first hearing the pitch.
“My first thought was, ‘Man that’s crazy, why would you want to do that?'” recalled Joshua Jackson, who takes over the Dan Gallagher role from Michael Douglas; Lizzy Caplan, who plays Glenn Close’s Alex Forrest role, also questioned, “Why would you do that? It’s perfect.”
But after conversations with showrunner Alex Cunningham (who herself almost turned down the job when Paramount asked her to find a new way to explore the film), the two were hooked by the new focus on marriage, infidelity and mental health that the original did not explore as deeply. In the series Dan is married (to Amanda Peet’s Beth) and has an affair with Alex,...

“Fatal Attraction” showrunner Alexandra Cunningham says it was at a table read on Zoom when she knew that Joshua Jackson and Lizzy Caplan had the chemistry to make her reimagining of the 1987 movie work.
“The entire cast was there and it’s everyone in their little windows,” Cunningham told me at the premiere of the Paramount+ series Monday night in West Hollywood at the Pacific Design Center. “As soon as Josh and Lizzy started talking to each other, there was chemistry. When you have chemistry on Zoom, you’re going to have chemistry when you meet in real life.”
She continued, “Immediately it was like, ‘These people are really flirting. These people are really living this moment.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, my god, it’s gonna be okay.’”
In the eight-part series, Jackson stars as Dan Gallagher with Caplan as Alex Forrest, roles played by Michael Douglas and Glenn Close in the original film.

Fatal Attraction was a huge box office hit back in 1987, but it didn’t age all that well, with Glenn Close’s spurned mistress turning into a crazed horror movie villain intent on hacking her former lover to bits. Paramount+’s new series adaptation — debuting this Sunday; I’ve seen the first four episodes — aims to right that wrong by reexamining the central affair through modern eyes and showing us there’s more to the story. It’s an intriguing idea, but unfortunately, the misguided revamp only manages to lose what made this story exciting in the first place. The...

The highest-grossing film of 1987 worldwide, the original “Fatal Attraction” served as a cautionary tale against casual infidelity, showing how even a seemingly innocuous fling can upend someone’s entire life. Lawyer Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) has a steamy weekend hookup with publishing exec Alex Forrest (Glenn Close), which derails in the most horrific way imaginable when she becomes obsessed with him, putting his entire family in jeopardy. (Close maintains that people told her for years afterward that the movie saved their marriage.)
In a TV landscape overrun with prequels, sequels and reboots, the source material for Paramount Plus’ new “Fatal Attraction” series proves surprisingly fertile. The show’s eight episodes provide plenty of time for the story to expand past paranoia, into the more interesting question of why Alex Forrest became so obsessive in the first place — not to mention why Dan, apparently a happy family man, tumbled from fidelity so easily.
