The Murder Mystery has formed an integral aspect of popular culture's landscape since the earliest days of movies and television, a status quo that shows no sign of slowing down. From classic numbers like Charade and Murder on the Orient Express to contemporary rivals such as Hot Fuzz and Knives Out, cinema has witnessed an array of standout genre offerings over the years, with talented directors in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock, Rian Johnson, and David Fincher all turning in a number of the best murder mystery movies of all time.
This extends to television; the best television shows of all time include several seminal murder mystery offerings comprising wildly successful stories for smaller screens. Inviting never-ending musings and debate through their very nature, the genre has produced a diverse array of shows that received acclaim from fans and critics alike. Ranging from the cut-and-dried detective format of classic murder...

As Kenneth Branagh brings his third Hercule Poirot film to theaters with “A Haunting in Venice,” fans of the Agatha Christie character might debate: Who is the best actor to ever play the mustachioed Belgian detective? And which versions simply didn’t work?
We’ve compiled a list of the most notable actors to portray the famously fussy sleuth —from Tony Randall to PBS favorite David Suchet — and ranked them with both how true they are to Christie’s vision and how enjoyable their portrayal is to audience.
MGM
7. Tony Randall (1965)
The “Odd Couple” actor’s one outing as the detective in the Frank Tashlin-directed film “The Alphabet Murders” leans very hard into comedy. The result: Despite the mustache and bald cap and an occasionally passable accent, we get very little of “the little grey cells” character we expect and far more sight gigs and slapstick.

Warning! Spoilers about Outlander season 7, episode 5 and the Outlander books ahead.Jamie’s worry that Fort Ticonderoga would have been expunged was prompted by learning about Simon Fraser of Balnain fighting for the English as a Brigadier-General under John Burgoyne in Outlander season 7, episode 5. The end of Outlander season 7, episode 5 proved Jamie right about the fort’s weaknesses and how a Highlander would think to use the terrain to their advantage. However, the episode also introduced a relative of Jamie that is central to the story of An Echo in the Bone, Outlander’s seventh book on which season 7 is based, even if his side of the family wasn’t really introduced before in Outlander.
The American Revolution already left Jamie and Claire in a pickle because they knew who would have won it and because Jamie’s biological son William Ransom was happily willing to fight for the English.

Poirot and Foyle’s War could be in the running for Emmy’s this year having been submitted for consideration as nominees in 13 categories including Outstanding TV Movie. Despite critical acclaim over the years, neither series has previously been nominated. Leading men David Suchet and Michael Kitchen have been put foward for consideration as well as supporting actors Honeysuckle Weeks and Hugh Fraser. Foyle’s creator Anthony Horowitz also receives a long overdue nod.
After 25 years on the air, the curtain finally came down on Belgian’s favorite son last August when Acorn TV gave a debut to Agatha Christie’s Poirot: Curtain, Poirot’s Last Case. Foyle’s almost decade long saga reached its conclusion when Acorn TV debuted Foyle’s War: Elise, The Final Mystery. Acorn’s parent company Rlj Entertainment owns the rights to Foyle’s war and a majority stake in Agatha Christie Ltd.

Hugh Fraser played Captain Arthur Hastings, faithful friend to Hercule Poirot (David Suchet), on television for almost a quarter of a century. However, he has only become eligible to contend at the Emmys for his final performance as this steadfast English companion of the eccentric Belgian detective in the telefilm, "Agatha Christie's Poirot: Curtain, Poirot's Last Case." In our recent conversation (listen below), the celebrated character actor explained how Acorn TV made this possible. The streaming service, which specializes in programming from across the pond, stepped in to co-produce for the first time to ensure this final installment in the franchise reached Us audiences. -Break- Fraser vividly recalls his audition for the role back in 1989 for a proposed series of hour-long adaptations of Christie's short stories. "I had read the books as a teenager and found them interesting. When I was offered the part, I ..."'...

Curtain Poirot’s Last Case
All good things must come to an end, even Poirot – well the David Suchet version anyway. Rather fittingly, ITV rolled out the big guns for Suchet’s last dance and the cast were a veritable Who’s Who of British TV. Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax), Philip Glenister (Life on Mars), Helen Baxendale (Friends) and Shaun Dingwall (Breathless) were just some of the A-listers who came to pay homage to Britain’s favorite Belgian. Also on hand was Poirot’s old chum, Hastings (Hugh Fraser). The duo have been through plenty of trials and tribulations over the years but as the end drew near for the frail looking Poirot, Hastings was asked to be his “eye and ears” on one last detective quest.
The setting for Poirot’s Last Case was a familiar one, Styles House where the duo first met no less than 30 years ago.

The end is nigh for Hercule Poirot — well the David Suchet version anyway. Two and a half decades’ worth of mystery and intrigue culminate in four all new episodes that are set to air on ITV this Fall. Appropriately enough, the first of the quartet is titled The Big Four and it sees David Suchet reunited with past cast regulars Hugh Fraser, Philip Jackson and Pauline Moran.
In The Big Four, Poirot finds himself heading into Foyle’s War territory as he is asked to investigate the murder of a Soviet chess master on the eve of World war II. The first episode airs on ITV on Wednesday 23 October and it is scheduled to be broadcast by PBS early next year. The season concludes with Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case. Blow Out (Criterion) Brian De Palma’s greatest Hitchcock homage, with a dash of Antonioni thrown in for good measure. John Travolta gives one of his best turns as a sound-effects engineer who unwittingly records a political assassination, then finds himself hunted by a ruthless hitman (John Lithgow, a memorably creepy psycho) after saving the life of the kindly, albeit dim-witted call girl (Nancy Allen, excellent) who was with the deceased. Terrific blend of suspense and very black humor, perhaps De Palma’s finest hour as an auteur. Beautifully shot by Vilmos Zsigmond. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interviews with De Palma, Allen, cameraman Garrett Brown; Photo gallery; De Palma’s 1967 feature Murder a la Mod; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 2.0 surround.
Kes (Criterion) Ken Loach’s landmark 1970 film is both a heart-rending portrait of adolescence, and a pointed socio-political commentary on life in the North of England.
