Step into Samia’s fantasy world and you’ll find an alter ego that looks like her, but is entirely different. She wears a backward baseball cap on top of her long, curly, jet-black hair and sports denim Daisy Dukes. She lives in a balmy, emerald-green wetland. She’s completely unburdened by people’s opinions or expectations. This is Samia’s idealized self, and her name is Kiki Swamp.
As she shares her alter ego’s name, Samia, 28, can’t help but laugh. “I made a Sim of her,” the singer-songwriter says with a chuckle.

Towards the end of her song “Amelia,” Samia walks into a party. “I’m writing a poem, somebody stop me,” she sings over balmy synths and a chirpy beat. It’s less of an actual threat and more a self-aware quip from the 27-year-old musician who’s better than almost anyone at turning fleeting moments into poetry.
“I love romanticizing shit, and I always have,” Samia says. “I was an internally dramatic child. There’s something really powerful and something that feels like protest sometimes in writing [my thoughts] down in a song.

In a major boon to Los Angeles area cord cutters, Spectrum SportsNet and the Los Angeles Lakers today announced the launch of what’s being called Spectrum SportsNet+, a direct-to-consumer streaming subscription service that can be viewed on NBA.com and the NBA App. It will deliver a 24/7 feed of Spectrum SportsNet programming, including live Lakers games and behind-the-scenes Lakers content, to sports enthusiasts.
Starting today, fans can purchase a Spectrum SportsNet+ subscription at NBA.com and watch across a wide range of devices including iPhone, iPad, Roku, Android mobile, Android TV, Amazon Fire, Hisense, PlayStation and Xbox. Spectrum SportsNet+ will be powered by the NBA’s integrated digital platform.
Previously, fans of the Purple and Gold in the region had to subscribe to AT&T’s UVerse, DirecTV or Cox’s cable services, which were the only bundles to offer Spectrum SportsNet. But those cable services are significantly more expensive than the new D-to-c offering.

Regional sports network (Rsn) providers have been anxious about their long-term prospects for some time. As cord-cutting accelerates, there are fewer users paying for cable and satellite subscriptions. This means RSNs get less from pay-tv providers and therefore must raise carriage fees to try to make up for the lost income. Cablers are then put in a bind, forced to choose between passing those costs onto consumers or simply cutting ties with the channels in question.
More and more pay-tv providers are getting ready for life without RSNs, it seems. For example, Directv announced this week it has agreed to a new carriage deal with Spectrum for its Spectrum SportsNet and Spectrum Sportsnet LA channels, which carry Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Lakers games. Most importantly for customers, the agreement significantly lowers the penetration threshold for the networks, which means Directv can start offering satellite, Directv Stream, and AT&T...

“Hocus Pocus 2” has wrapped filming and will premiere on Disney Plus on Halloween, according to executive producer Adam Shankman.
In an Instagram post on Friday, Shankman wrote, “Sistaaaaahhhhsss! Aaaaand that’s a Wrap!!! #hocuspocus2. Congratulations to the amazing team…and the Whoooollleeee cast and crew!!! Coming to you #halloween #2022 on @disneyplus.”
While the film’s release date has yet to be officially announced, Disney confirmed in a statement to Variety that “Hocus Pocus 2” will debut “at some point during the Halloween season this fall.” Since spooky season programming typically comes out ahead of the holiday, we can probably expect “Hocus Pocus 2” just before Oct. 31.
In the 1993 original, teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz) accidentally resurrects a coven of evil witches known as the Sanderson Sisters. In the 2022 sequel, three young women accidentally free the witches once again, in modern-day Salem, and must stop the child-hungry Sanderson Sisters from wreaking havoc on the world.

Just days after Gov. Ralph Northam signed Senate Bill 272 and House Bill 1552 into law, thereby significantly increasing protections for tethered dogs statewide, comedy icon and PETA supporter Carol Burnett — who previously wrote an op-ed in support of the measure — sent him a thank-you note on PETA’s behalf.
“As someone who is particularly vulnerable to Covid-19, I’m taking precautions to protect myself, and I’ve developed a much deeper understanding of the loneliness, frustration, fear, anxiety, and desperation that dogs endure when they’re kept chained and isolated for their entire lives,” writes Burnett. “You’ve made Virginia a more humane place for dogs as well as a safer place for all residents.”
PETA — whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way” — notes that Gov. Northam’s administration supported the bills during session and that as of July 1, Virginia law will prohibit...

As the novel coronavirus — which originated in a market in China where live and dead animals are sold for human consumption — devastates New York City, Honorary PETA Director Edie Falco has sent a letter and video today urging Mayor Bill de Blasio to shut down the more than 80 live-animal markets still operating in the city.
The new video of live-animal markets in New York City shows terrified animals confined to cages smeared with feces and corpses, body parts, and blood contaminating public sidewalks. Virologists agree that markets where sick and stressed animals are caged in their own waste are breeding grounds for deadly influenza viruses and other diseases that cross the species barrier—and that only luck has prevented previous pandemics. PETA has launched an international petition urging the World Health Organization to call for the permanent closure of live-animal markets worldwide.

Spectrum SportsNet La said Wednesday that they have reached a carriage agreement that will see DirecTV, AT&T TV, U-verse TV and AT&T TV Now customers finally be able to watch Los Angeles Dodgers games, ending a six-year impasse that has kept the team off DirecTV screens in more than half of homes in its own market.
SportsNet La was born out of the 25-year, multibillion-dollar deal that Time Warner Cable inked in 2013 with the Dodgers for broadcast rights. Eventually, TWC was acquired by Charter. The cabler was seeking a reported $5 per subscriber per month for the regional sports network, but DirecTV and other carriers have longed balked at the cost.

DirecTV, U-verse and AT&T TV customers will finally get to watch Los Angeles Dodgers games again, after six years of blackout. AT&T and Spectrum Networks have announced a carriage deal that will bring the Dodgers’ regional sports network, Spectrum SportsNet La, to those subscribers for the first time.
DirecTV/AT&T and Spectrum had failed to come to an agreement for six years, which left the Dodgers with only partial coverage in the Los Angeles market. Under the new deal, DirecTV customers will receive SportsNet La starting today on channel 690, while AT&T TV and AT&T TV Now customers will start to see the channel on April 8.
The news comes, however, as the baseball season has been delayed due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Just before Valentine’s Day — which is the most popular day of the year for horse-drawn carriage rides in Central Park — married comic stars Kathy Najimy and Dan Finnerty teamed up with PETA for a new power ballad parody, “A Valentine’s Day Ode to Horses,” which urged lovers to skip the cruel tourist attraction.
“These horses are mistreated / stuck in traffic all day long / with car exhaust and loud honking horns / and me singing this song,” sings Finnerty. “They’re working crazy-ass hours a day / whether in snow or rain / Then at night, they’re crammed into stables so small / it’s inhu-freakin’-mane!” Najimy chimes in with “Get it—mane? It’s a horse.”

After three decades of recruiting stars to pose nude and declare, “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur,” PETA is celebrating the demise of the fur trade and calling it a wrap on the iconic ad campaign, which has featured P!nk, Gillian Anderson, Eva Mendes, and dozens of other celebrities.
PETA is announcing the news in advance of New York Fashion Week — during which celebrities have unveiled naked anti-fur ads since the ‘90s — and cites a historic tipping point: "Nearly every top designer has shed fur, California has banned it, Queen Elizabeth II has renounced it, Macy’s is closing its fur salons, and now, the largest fur auction house in North America has filed for bankruptcy," says PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews, who conceived the “naked” campaign. “With fur in a downward spiral, PETA will expand our efforts to expose the violent leather and wool trades.

"And that's when I decided - enough is enough." Netflix has unveiled the dazzling official trailer for an indie dramatic comedy titled Dumplin', the latest from filmmaker Anne Fletcher. It was a star-studded night at Manhattan’s Pierre Hotel as over 150 artists — including stars Tim Gunn, Stephen Colbert, and Audra McDonald (and yes, even some Muppets) — came out to celebrate stage and screen star Neil Patrick Harris at the Drama League’s 30th annual all-star gala.
It’s no secret that Harris — who will soon be back on stage starring in a new version of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which opens April 14 — has garnered quite an admiration from the communities he’s been involved in. But there was no question Monday night that Harris is admired for more than just his talent.

Najimy's Husband Films Viral Video Against New York Carriage Horse Rides

Actress Kathy Najimy's funnyman husband Dan Finnerty has shot a new viral video encouraging couples not to take carriage rides around Central Park.
The Wedding Planner star actually shot the promo as he followed one carriage, singing an anti-romance song and urging the couple taking the trip to climb out.
Najimy admits the horse-drawn carriage rides were one of the things she least enjoys about living in New York City.
She says, "We live in Columbus Circle and there are a lot of those carriage horses there and it's the one thing I hate about New York because they're (horses) in the traffic in the exhausts and the fumes and it's dangerous... and they died on the street.
"For 1893, it was great, but for now it's time to let them go run in the pasture."
And she's a big fan of her husband's new video: "He did this great rock video, where he follows (a carriage) singing a song to a couple in a carriage, singing, 'It's not romantic to take your lady in the carriages...'"...

After two years of marriage, Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson have decided to separate. The fallout is happening quickly from FIFA president Sepp Blatter's "joke" that gay football fans should refrain from having sex if they want to visit Qatar for the 2022 World Cup. There are calls for him to resign, and John Amaechi was enraged by the comments. Here's an interesting followup to the "flamboyant pack" controversy surrounding the video game Heroes of Newerth. Gay-Nerds received two e-mails from insiders in the company. The first was from someone who insisted that no offense was intended, and it was all in good fun. The second was from a former employee who was around when the pack was first discussed, and he claims that the intent all along was to make the sound effects "faggoty." Are these cupcakes racist?

Jay Leno introduced his prime-time variety/talk show Monday at 10 p.m., and it turns out that Jay Leno at 10 p.m. wasn't much different from Jay Leno at 11:30 p.m.. But did anyone expect him to alter his DNA and come out sounding like The Daily Show's Jon Stewart? Eager, hard-working, upbeat, Leno remains Santa's largest elf -- and it's Christmas, whether you want it or not. What's groundbreaking is the show's time slot. The Jay Leno Show is a major programming gamble for NBC. The network is clearing the 10 p.m. weeknight of episodic series and bringing in the former Tonight host only months after he retired. (His first guest, Jerry Seinfeld, referred to The Leno Show as "your 'I didn't get fired by NBC' program.") The network has pitched the show as a no-lose proposition, so cheap it could be watched by no one and turn a profit.

On the premiere episode of The Jay Leno Show, the Tonight Show vet's new prime-time talk show/variety show/comedy hybrid, Kanye West did some time in the chair to complete an act of contrition for bullying tender flower Taylor Swift at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards. Jerry Seinfeld mocked Leno for not being able to get a better first guest. Leno interviewed President Obama...sort of. Dan Finnerty and the Dan Band serenaded car washers. Jay-z, West and Rihanna performed. And then there were Headlines. So, how did it all go? Read on to find out...

The new The Jay Leno Show debuts tonight and brings with it everyone’s favorite funny friendo, Liz Feldman. The AfterEllen.com favorite and out comedian will appear on the show as a correspondent, one of a series of young comic tapped by Jay to be showcased on his new series.
Liz talked about her role on the The Jay Leno Show wearing a familiar blue blazer, albeit a darker one than we know and love from her This Just Out With Liz Feldman segments. The video isn’t embeddable, so click this link to view it and then return right quick so we can talk about it. (Note: Nothing is wrong with your volume, sound gaps are just part of the original clip.)
She still has a blue blazer, albeit a darker one. I also like how she has cleverly managed to still get a rainbow flag in there — note the shirt.

Jay Leno has been entertaining night owls for over 20 years, from his guest-hosting stints on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, to him taking over the show in 1992 with The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Now he's moving up in the TV world to primetime with The Jay Leno Show, which premieres on Monday, September 14 at 10 Pm Et on NBC. Leno recently held a conference call to discuss his brand new show, and here's what he had to say.
Are there any permanent - like you used to have headlines always on Mondays; - do you have anything like that where a certain thing will always be on a certain day?
Jay Leno: Well I think so. I think headlines will be on Mondays again. So the first Monday will be headlines. So we'll probably keep that tradition going. Everything else is kind of open to speculation.
I see...

Every awesome, hangover-inducing wedding needs a killer wedding band, and “The Hangover”—this weekend’s surprise box office champ—has got that covered. If you haven’t seen the film, you might want to turn back now because what comes next is filled with spoilers, such as they are in a boozy comedy.
After a bachelor party gone bad, a trio led by Bradley Cooper’s cocky schoolteacher track down their missing buddy/groom (Justin Bartha) and drag him back to get hitched. When the wedding party gets going, a man you might recognize steps to the mic and belts out a supremely raunchy version of 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop.” That man is Dan Finnerty of The Dan Band, and he’s become something of a muse for director Todd Phillips. In fact, Phillips, who’s utilized Finnerty’s comedic crooning talents in “Old School” and “Starsky & Hutch,” has called...

The Hangover
Directed by: Todd Phillips
Cast: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Heather Graham, Justin Bartha
Running Time: 1 hr 45 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: June 6, 2009
Plot: Four guys head to Las Vegas a couple nights before one of them (Bartha) gets married. The next day, three of the guys wake up and can’t remember a thing from the night before, plus they’re missing their friend. They spend the rest of the day trying to track him down. Hilarity ensues.
Who’s It For? It’s definitely rated R because of the jokes. Anything goes for a laugh. It might be mainly for guys, simply because it’s Vegas, following three guys around. But if your lady laughed at Old School, she should get some chuckles out of The Hangover.
Expectations: I just hoped to laugh. I’ve always like Cooper and Helms, but I haven’t totally fallen for Galifianakis’ stand-up comedy.

Welcome back to another edition of Insert Caption -- the game that'll totally give you a good buzz minus the annoying hangover. Last week we asked you to spit up some captions for a photo from the new Pixar movie, Up -- and not only did you come through with some fantastic (and hilarious) captions, but you made our narrowing down of the winners list a very hard chore. But we had to make the tough decisions, and so congrats to those of you who found the strength, courage and determination to make it into the much sought-after winner's circle, where the balloons are colorful and the ice cream is on the house.
1. "Look at the bright side -- how often do you get the opportunity to pee on three states ... at the same time??" -- Andrew T.
2. "And that was the day Carl decided to quit drinking." -- Kurt P.
