Oscar Sunday was highlighted by the 97th Oscars but also numerous high-profile viewing parties, including Elton John’s renowned gala and the Vanity Fair celebration.
After the Oscars, the celebration continued as stars moved from the Governors Ball to exclusive after-parties hosted by Neon, Searchlight Pictures, Mubi, and Netflix.
Elton John’s legendary Academy Awards Viewing Party, now in its 33rd year and benefiting the Elton John AIDS Foundation, did not disappoint on Oscar day. This year’s star-studded event features a powerhouse lineup of co-hosts and guests, including Megan Thee Stallion, Hozier, Sharon Stone, Sean Penn, Mick Jagger, Jeffrey Wright (Benefit Chair), Jean Smart, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Neil Patrick Harris. Adding to the excitement, Chappell Roan will deliver a highly anticipated performance.

Diane Warren didn’t let her Oscar losing streak get in the way of having some fun Sunday night.
Despite not going home with a gold statuette for best original song for “Journey” from Netflix’s “The Six Triple Eight,” the prolific songwriter attended the Vanity Fair party in Beverly Hills. The loss marked her 16th time being snubbed for the Academy Award. (“El Mal” from “Emilia Pérez” won on Sunday.)
“I’m consistent as fuck,” Warren cracked when I caught with her on the Vanity Fair red carpet in Beverly Hills. “You know, it is what it is. I’m happy to be here.”
Warren’s ensemble at the Oscars included “Make It Fucking Happen” emblazoned on the inside of her jacket collar.
She said, “I’m the Terminator of the Oscars — I’ll be back. That’s in my Arnold Schwarzenegger voice. I’m coming back. You can’t get rid of me.

Exclusive: Shirley MacLaine wailed during her acceptance speech when she won her Oscar back in 1984 for Terms of Endearment, “I’m gonna cry because this show has been as long as my career!”
Spare a thought for three of this year’s Best Actress nominees, Demi Moore, Karla Sofia Gascón and Mickey Madison, because for them, awards season has been running since last May when their movies, The Substance, Emilia Pérez and Anora, respectively, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival.
“It’s been nearly a year,” Moore tells me helpfully, when we meet at the annual Charles Finch/Chanel pre-Oscars soirée in the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
Her face is a genuine picture of joy, that’s the word. “I am joyful,” she smiles.

H.E.R. is weighing in on Oscar producers’ decision not to include performances of this year’s best original song nominees during Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony.
The singer-songwriter would have performed Diane Warren’s “Journey” from the “The Six Triple Eight” soundtrack if the traditional performances took place.
“It’s kind of weird, but I’m just happy to be there,” H.E.R., who won the original song Oscar in 2021 for “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah,” told me Saturday night at the Chanel and Charles Finch pre-Oscars dinner at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hill Hotel, “Performing or not, the song’s gonna live on, whether we perform it on the Oscar stage or not, I was a little bummed because I look forward to those performances, not just being in it, you know, but it’s totally fine. Charles Finch fixes his beady eyes on me in that sort of British professorial manner to make it clear that the cocktail soiree followed by dinner that he and Chanel are throwing Saturday night at the Beverly Hills Hotel’s Polo Lounge “is not about me meeting some famous people.”
Actually, Finch would’ve made an interesting choice to play James Bond back in the day, but I digress.
The event started out three decades ago as a celebration of international filmmakers and actors “who didn’t have anything to do on a Saturday night” before the Academy Awards “and they’d come and have a plate of pasta,” Finch explains.
However, as much Finch wants to play it down, the event has become a big deal, and every year there’s an unseemly scramble to be included on the guest list.

A Rabbit’s Foot, the film and culture magazine founded by British producer Charles Finch, perhaps best known for throwing some of awards season’s most star-studded parties, has partnered with its sister production house Rabbit’s Foot Films on a short film division.
The announcement comes as the two unveil the winners of a short film competition they launched last year to help discover new filmmaking talent from around the world, with the ambition to work with them to develop both long and short-form content.
A Rabbit’s Foot will now distribute short films via its platform, while Rabbit’s Foot Films will produce a series of original shorts in partnership with the magazine.
Rabbit’s Foot Films is the new name for Finch’s Standalone Pictures, which rebranded in line with his magazine after the last feature he co-produced, Sofia Coppola’s Venice 2023 bowing “Priscilla” starring Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi.

The Dune franchise, helmed by acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve, has been a huge success for Warner Bros., and while a third movie is now in the works, the studio is unlikely to want this particular IP cash cow to end. With this in mind, a new rumor claims that a director is being sought for Dune 4. And it’s a filmmaker well-known for big franchises...and even bigger monsters.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, Godzilla director Gareth Edwards is now the top choice for Dune 4, with Villeneuve having previously revealed that the third installment, Dune: Messiah, will be his final trip to Arrakis. Currently, this is just a rumor, so take it with a Godzilla-sized pinch of salt, but Edwards has become known for stepping into major franchises thanks to the likes of Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and this year’s Jurassic World Rebirth. The story of Dune: Part Two and Dune 3will be separated by a 12-year time jump, but thankfully, fans won't be waiting anywhere near that long for the next entry in Denis Villeneuve's groundbreaking sci-fi franchise, as the third film in the trilogy just got a major production update. Dune: Part Two was released less than 12 months ago, and is currently making its rounds (and being snubbed on) the awards circuit. But to some fans, it feels like a lifetime since the last entry. At one point, Villeneuve had fans worried when he speculated that he might film a different movie in between Part Two and Dune Messiah, but that rumor was put to rest last year. Now, not only is Villeneuve working on the script for Dune Messiah, but the film may move into production far quicker than anyone was expecting.

Scout Willis inherited some of her mom Demi Moore’s style genes! The mother-and-daughter duo led the style pack at the glamorous Pre-bafta Party co-hosted by Chanel and Charles Finch at 5 Hertford Street in London.
Both Demi Moore and her daughter Scout Willis have unique, fashionable styles. Demi is known for her sophisticated approach, often choosing timeless and elegant silhouettes. Her daughter, Scout, meanwhile, usually wears vibrant colors and unique patterns, exhibiting a more adventurous and edgy aesthetic.

Mike Figgis has been shooting a behind-the-scenes documentary for the past 18 months about the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. It’s called Megadoc.
Figgis told me Monday that it’s been edited but there’s allowance for the fact that the film played in competition here at the Cannes Film Festival. He recorded an interview with the cinema titan the other day.
Figgis, who was introduced into the Coppola clan back in the mid 1990s after directing Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas, told me that the documentary is “very much a fly-on-the-wall” and also features conversations with various cast members — Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Dustin Hoffman, Shia Labeouf — and Coppola’s wife Eleanor Coppola, who shot the footage and directed her own study of her husband’s work for the acclaimed Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse, about the making of 1979s Apocalypse Now.

Tom Rothman, the Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman and CEO, wined and dined a select few at a splendidly swish soirée Friday at Mamo Michelangelo in Antibes, hosted by Charles Finch as part of his annual Filmmakers Dinner honoring 100 years of Columbia Pictures, and there was something he said about why movies matter that has stuck with me.
Hours earlier, Rothman had introduced a gloriously restored print of Charles Vidor’s 1946 movie Gilda, starring Rita Hayworth as the eponymous nightclub temptress and Glenn Ford as the hardboiled gambler from her past.

Vidor also uses the vocabulary of dance to signal Gilda’s emotional temperature.

Bye, Barbie.
Warner Bros. released Greta Gerwig’s Barbie last summer, on July 21, 2023, and it became an instant pop culture phenomenon before going on to end the year as the No. 1 movie of the year thanks to a $1.445 billion dollar finish. The pink-a-palooza continued with an awards season run — capped by eight Oscar nominations including one for best picture — that’s come complete with a high fashion promo tour thanks to producer and star Margot Robbie.
But now that the Oscars are just hours away, the A-lister revealed what her plans are come next week during a brief interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night before heading into Chanel and Charles Finch’s 15th annual pre-Oscars dinner at Polo Lounge in Beverly Hills. But first, Robbie was keen to name two of her favorite Chanel looks she’s worn recently.

Prolific Italian producer Lorenzo Mieli is known for backing Luca Guadagnino (“Bones and All”), Paolo Sorrentino, and Angelina Jolie (“Without Blood”; she also stars in his Pablo Larrain production “Maria”). However, his first American film, Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” was a very different kind of challenge.
“I would have never thought of myself as someone able to put together financing,” Mieli said on the phone from Italy. “I understood that in this moment in time, as producers, we want to protect the job of filmmakers. This is what we need to do.”
Based on Presley’s memoir “Elvis and Me,” Mieli struggled to hold the project together: first against resistance from the Elvis Presley estate, and then having to find another international distributor after Sony fell out in response to the estate withholding rights to Presley’s music.
In the end, all of the sow’s ears became silk purses.

That Harrison Ford sure has some stamina for someone in their 81st year.
What’s the secret I ask him?
“You know what the secret is,” he responded.
“Rock ‘n’ roll and the other two things.”
What two other things?
“Sex and drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. That’s the secret but now it’s not a secret,” a bad-boy twinkle in his eye as he spoke.
Ford and Calista Flockhart were guests at Charles Finch’s A Rabbit’s Foot annual Filmmakers Dinner in Cannes on Friday night.

For as long as I can remember the event had been held at Eden Roc, but this year Finch and his partners switched to Fred L’écailler seafood restaurant, out on the eastern peninsula, past the Palm Beach. Always cracks me up when chef patron Fred Garbellini describes himself as “just a humble fisherman.”
Strictly speaking I guess he is.

Cannes is ready to party again with the likes of Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford, Alicia Vikander, Jude Law and Cate Blanchett all set for a Côte d’Azur hoedown. Here’s a (non-exhaustive) look at some of festival festivities on deck at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off Tuesday and runs through May 27.
The return of the Carlton Hotel following a whopping $380 million renovation is perhaps symbolic of the reemergence of shindigs at the festival following the pandemic. ”We were closed for 26 months,” sighed the Carlton’s general manager Carlo Stragiotto as he welcomed us in the opulent lobby.
“We have created new spaces and renovated old ones,” Stragiotto proclaimed, then boasted that the hotel has space enough “to host four or five parties at the same time each night, if needed.”

Jonathan Majors is making sure to keep his body in shape.
The actor has created quite a stir for his physique in “Creed III,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and the Sundance Film Festival favorite “Magazine Dreams.” Majors tells Variety that he’ll work out not once, but twice before the Oscars on Sunday.

There’s something inherently unsettling about teeth, and the addition of someone prodding at them with sharp instruments is especially invasive. On the other side of that coin, the negative association with dentistry can impact the professionals. Cult filmmaker Brian Yuzna tapped into these fundamental fears with his 1996 direct-to-video film, The Dentist, and its 1998 sequel, The Dentist 2.
In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. Charles Finch (who went on to executive produce David Cronenberg’s Spider) was later brought in to punch it up.

Exclusive: Charles Finch (Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love) is as English as they come, but Hollywood runs through his veins. Having written movies, produced a few, directed three; managed movie stars and built brands, and published high-end cultural magazines, he decided “smack in the middle of Covid, in my late fifties,” that he wanted to go back to making movies.
He has set up a small film company that he calls Standalone. Finch has a relationship with Columbia Pictures and he’ll formally announce a development deal with that studio next month. The entrepreneur also has a project with Netflix.
Finch told us that he has a slate of some 15 to 20 projects. Included in his group of filmmaking collaborators are directors Josie Rourke (Mary Queen of Scots), Tom Hooper (Les Miserables), Marina Zenovich (Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind), Simon Curtis (Downton Abbey: A New Era), and Florian Zeller (The Father...

Hollywood is out and about in the days and nights leading up to the Oscars. Here, Variety reporters go inside the hottest parties and events.
Chanel and Charles Finch Dinner
Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly Hills, March 26
It sounds like “Belfast” director Kenneth Branagh and the film’s Ciarán Hinds will be at the Oscars. It was unclear if they could attend after both contracted Covid at the BAFTA Awards in London. “I know Ciarán is all clear,” Caitríona Balfe told Variety before heading into the Chanel and Charles Finch’s annual pre-Oscar dinner. “I think [Branagh] is, too. I think he’s good.”
Henry Golding said it was nice to see Hollywood reopening for Oscar festivities. “I think it’s great and it’s about time,” he told Variety. “Chanel has made sure everyone has had a Pcr test and that’s a step further than a...

London is getting ready to ring in the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday, returning to an in-person ceremony live from the Royal Albert Hall after a scaled-down hybrid format amid the Covid crisis last year. The weekend is rife with festivities planned to honor nominees and winners, but also has a slightly different look than in pre-pandemic times — most events require a lateral-flow test taken within 24 hours, for example.
Also, the awards ceremony, hosted by Rebel Wilson, will kick off at 5pm local time on Sunday (airing two hours later on BBC 1 and on Britbox in the U.S.). This is a start that’s earlier than usual, but is in line with 2021, while the entire Sunday schedule has shifted up this year versus 2020.

Daphne Rubin-Vega’s face may be on an “In the Heights” billboard on 41st Street in Times Square, but her son isn’t so impressed. “He is 16, so I am not the coolest person at all on the planet,” Rubin-Vega tells me. “I’m like, ‘Just so you know, I’m the most badass mom you could ever have.’ He just gives me this look and goes, ‘Yeah, well, next time try for 42nd Street.’ My family keeps me on my toes.”
Joking aside, Rubin-Vega appreciates what seeing a film about a Latino community could mean to aspiring Brown performers. She says she had few role models to aspire to. For example, she loved watching “The Sound of Music,” but Julie Andrews was “the last person” she thought of when dreaming of becoming an actor. “I just wanted to achieve that feeling — whatever that was that she was doing when...

Andra Day is hosting a Covid-safe Oscar afterparty.
The singer-actor, who is nominated for a best actress statuette for her work as Billie Holiday in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” will hold court after the Academy Awards at Spring Place LA, a private members-only club in Beverly Hills. Director Lee Daniels and co-stars Trevante Rhodes and Rob Morgan are expected to join Day at the soiree, which will have a capacity of just 80 people.
An on-site rapid test will be mandatory for all attendees.
“No one can enter tonight unless they are Covid tested in our testing facility. Spring Place has secured the services of a company to build this on site and to specifically handle testing,” a Spring Place rep tells Variety. “Guests may enter with a negative test and then they are allowed to go into the restaurant, no matter if they’re in possession of a vaccine card or not.

It may be a stretch to refer to Lionel Atwill as a horror icon, but damned if he wasn’t a reliable utility player in the genre through the 1930s and ’40s. As a stage-actor-turned-film-star, he seemed to be the go-to for adding a dash of British gravitas to a supporting role. In fact, he starred in every Universal-produced Frankenstein movie after Bride as different characters ranging from inspectors, doctors, and other inspectors. In fact, Mel Brooks fans will be at least tangentially aware that his work as Young Frankenstein’s one-armed Inspector Kemp being a direct parody of Atwill’s Inspector Krogh from Son of Frankenstein. Atwill also dipped his toe into the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes universe, including a supporting part in Hound of the Baskervilles and even a turn as Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon.
Like most great character actors, Atwill found his niche in supporting roles,...
