We got confirmation late last year that a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was officially in the works, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.

Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and previous MonsterVerse movie Godzilla vs. Kong, was originally set to return, but ultimately departed the project under "amicable" circumstances, with Grant Sputore stepping in to replace him shortly after.

Now, Deadline reports that the next MonsterVerse movie has founds its lead in Kaitlyn Dever.

MonsterVerse is one of the most interesting cinematic universes out of all of them. The Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures-owned franchise has earned over $2.5 billion worldwide and also consists of TV shows on different streaming services but the way it all came together is a bit iffy because of the rights issues and the general laziness that we see in the some of the MonsterVerse films, but still Godzilla vs. Kong is still one of the most iconic movies for me. Officially, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will premiere on Max on July 4, 2024 --- which just so happens to be Independence Day. Additionally, a new version of the film with American Sign Language (Asl) will also be made available for streaming on Max on the same day. The Asl version of Godzilla x Kong was produced exclusively for Max with Deaf West Theatre's Asl performer Otis Jones providing interpretation. Jones was coached by Leila Hanaumi, who previously worked on Barbie with Asl for Max in December. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire in Asl will be presented as its own unique title on Max with special key art.

The MonsterVerse is moving forward with a sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. However, after directing the movie and its predecessor, Godzilla vs. Kong, Adam Wingard won't be back for the next movie.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be directed by Grant Sputore. The filmmaker previously directed the sci-fi film I Am Mother, which starred Hilary Swank and hit Netflix in 2019. He also has a background in commercials and directed multiple episodes of the TV series Castaway. He boards the project following the recent hiring of Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) to write the screenplay.
