There's good news for Christian Bale fans this month, with one of his best films getting a new streaming home. American Psycho arrives on Paramount+ on March 31.
Bale's career took off after his portrayal of the serial killer Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. The satirical black comedy film, based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, stars Bale as a New York City investment banker by day and serial killer by night. The film's ensemble cast included Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto and Reese Witherspoon. A commentary on yuppie culture and consumerism, American Psycho has become a cult classic in the years following its release.

Cult author Mark Z. Danielewski‘s groundbreaking horror novel House of Leaves turns 25 this year, and the author is celebrating with the announcement of the forthcoming release of his highly anticipated untitled novel.
The currently Untitled Novel is set to arrive on October 28, 2025, from Pantheon Books.
That Halloween season publication date is the only clue released so far about Danielewski’s latest; even the plot remains under wraps at this time.
While we await additional details on the author’s latest manuscript, the October release gives us plenty of time to revisit his twisty epistolary masterpiece, House of Leaves. Critics have consistently praised House of Leaves as a work that defies easy classification or description. American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis called it “thrillingly alive, sublimely creepy, distressingly scary, breathtakingly intelligent—it renders most other fiction meaningless.” Originally circulated as an enigmatic manuscript among a diverse community of musicians, tattoo artists,...

Another announced Luca Guadagnino film appears to be suffering from behind-the-scenes shakeups. According to multiple reports, Daniel Craig has dropped out of playing the title role in Guadagnino’s DC Comics adaptation “Sgt. Rock,” which was rumored to be one of the Italian auteur’s next projects.
The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news but did not give a specific reason for Craig’s departure, noting that other actors are being considered for the military comic book adaptation, with Jeremy Allen White listed as a potential contender to replace him. Representatives for Craig and Guadagnino did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s requests for comment.
“Sgt. Rock” was announced in November 2024 and was billed as a reunion between Guadagnino and Craig, who worked together on “Queer.” Justin Kuritzkes, who wrote both “Queer” and “Challengers,” was also on board to pen the script.

The film adaptation of American Psycho sparked outrage in 1999 – though reports of street protests were strangely exaggerated…
Published in 1991, American Psycho was arguably the most controversial novel of its era. Bret Easton Ellis’s withering story of a 1980s Wall Street investment banker and his seemingly endless appetite for violence provoked outrage, censorship, protests, and accusations of misogyny. It’s difficult to imagine, in a publishing sector decimated by the internet, something as archaic as a book creating quite such a sensation today.
American Psycho was widely considered so violent as to be unfilmable, so when news broke that it was to be adapted into a film as the 1990s ended, the reaction was surprise and yet more outrage. Pressure groups condemned the film before its script was written; one lawyer threatened to sue its production company if it received an Nc-17 rating rather than an R. While the film was in post-production,...

2025 marks the 25th anniversary of director Mary Harron’s Bret Easton Ellis adaptation American Psycho (watch it Here), which has come to be known as a cult classic – and for a while, news reports made it seem that, as an anniversary gift, we’d be getting an American Psycho remake from director Luca Guadagnino, whose credits include Challengers, Call Me By Your Name, Bones and All, Queer, and the Suspiria remake. Guadagnino reportedly signed on to direct the film from a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion) back in October, and in December we heard that Austin Butler (Elvis) and Jacob Elordi (Saltburn) were being considered for the lead role of Patrick Bateman, the character who was played by Christian Bale in Harron’s film. But then, Ellis said on his podcast that he thought the remake talk was “fake news” and that deals hadn’t even been secured with Guadagnino or Burns yet.

Armie Hammer To Return To Spotlight With New The Dark Knight Film? ( Photo Credit – Flickr )
The Dark Knight is set to return, but not the one fans of Batman might expect. According to People Magazine, German filmmaker Uwe Boll has announced his upcoming crime-thriller, sharing the same iconic title, with Armie Hammer cast in the lead role as a crime-fighting vigilante. The casting decision has sparked intense discussions, with debates on whether this first major role since Hammer’s fall from grace will rehabilitate his career or tarnish his reputation.
The Social Network star, who once enjoyed a promising career, has been facing severe vitriol all over social networking spaces following multiple allegations of misconduct — including accusations of r*pe, physical abuse, and cannibalistic fantasies — that surfaced against him in 2021. Though prosecutors in Los Angeles dropped the charges in 2023, his media image among film lovers and online audiences remains heavily scrutinized.

The film that angered thousands, caused its star, Christian Bale, to receive multiple death threats, and has since become a beloved dark comedy classic with endlessly quotable lines, has found a new streaming home. American Psycho, directed by Mary Harron, is based on the acclaimed and widely banned novel by Bret Easton Ellis. The film follows Patrick Bateman, an investment banker in New York who is obsessed with the perfect lifestyle, and has dark, sadistic fantasies that he unleashes on unsuspecting victims... or does he? American Psycho has become a pop-culture sensation, with Bale's performance as Bateman being widely celebrated, parodied, and memed on social media.
American Psycho is now streaming on Hulu. American Psycho was incredibly divisive when it was released in 2000. Just like Ellis' novel, which is the 51st most banned book in America, the film received widespread backlash for its depiction of violence and Bateman's sadistic mania.

Bret Easton Ellis Doubts Austin Butler’s Role in ‘American Psycho’ Remake: “Fake News” or Real Deal?

Last month, Variety reported that Austin Butler is set to star in Luca Guadagnino’s new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s ‘American Psycho’ for Lionsgate. Although there were rumors about Jacob Elordi being cast as Patrick Bateman, Butler was chosen instead. Both Butler and Elordi have portrayed different versions of Elvis in movies by Sofia Coppola and Baz Luhrmann.
The film will feature a script by Scott Z. Burns and is not a remake of the 2000 movie, but a fresh take on Ellis’ novel.
Things have gotten infinitely more complicated now since Easton Ellis himself is disputing these new rumors.
On The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, the author of ‘American Psycho’ said that Austin Butler hasn’t actually signed on to play Patrick Bateman in the new movie, calling the reports “fake news.” He explained, “I have a feeling it’s fake news… Austin Butler hasn’t signed anything to play Patrick Bateman.

Just last month, it was reported that Austin Butler was being considered to star as Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s new adaptation of American Psycho. However, American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis said on his podcast (via World of Reel) that he thinks it’s all just “fake news.“
“I have a feeling it’s fake news,” Ellis said. “I heard somewhere, from someone, that there are no contracts. Austin Butler hasn’t signed anything to play Patrick Bateman. Luca doesn’t have a deal. Scott Burns, who is supposed to write the screenplay, doesn’t have a deal either. So here’s a weird one. It was reported back in December that Austin Butler would be playing the role of Patrick Bateman in a new movie adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho for director Luca Guadagnino, but those reports are now being disputed by none other than Bret Easton Ellis himself.
On a recent episode of The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, the writer of the original American Psycho suggested that Austin Butler hasn’t actually signed on to play Patrick Bateman in the new American Psycho movie. In his own words, he suggests the report is “fake news.”

Bret Easton Ellis has come out to state that Lionsgate's supposed American Psycho reboot movie doesn't exist, suggesting that the reported production is simply part of a ploy to gauge interest. Mary Harron's darkly comedic and satirical psychological horror brought Ellis' 1991 novel to the big screen in 2000, telling the story of a vain, egotistical banker living a double life as a serial killer. American Psycho starred Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, alongside Reese Witherspoon, Willem Dafoe, and Jared Leto.
On his The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, the author recently debunked rumors of American Psycho's reboot on his podcast. He suggested that no contracts with Butler or potential director Luca Gudagino have been signed and have simply been reported to gauge audience interest:

Author Bret Easton Ellis says the announced “American Psycho” reimagining isn’t real.
Ellis said during his eponymous podcast that announced remake’s director Luca Guadagnino and rumored lead actor Austin Butler are not contracted for the feature. Regardless, Ellis confirmed that he is in no way involved in the potential reboot, despite writing the novel it will be adapted from.
“American Psycho” was first brought to the screen in 2000 with Mary Harron co-writing and directing; Christian Bale starred. Guadagnino’s version, which is being billed as an entirely new adaptation of Ellis’ book, was announced in 2024 as a Lionsgate film with Scott Z. Burns adapting. Austin Butler is apparently next in line to return some videotapes in Luca Guadagnino's upcoming American Psycho reboot. But, according to Bret Easton Ellis, who wrote the American Psycho novel, that might not actually be true. Ellis published "American Psycho" in 1992, and the novel quickly became one of the most banned books in America. Mary Harron's 2000 adaptation, starring Christian Bale, has become a timeless classic, and is endlessly quoted, cosplayed, and memed across the internet, with contemporary fans now able to appreciate the film for the dark comedy it is, not the glorification of violence critics once thought it to be.
Guadagnino's American Psycho remake was announced in October 2024, and Austin Butler has reportedly been cast as Patrick Bateman in the reboot. However, Bret Easton Ellis doesn't believe the announcement. Speaking on his own podcast (The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast), the author threw doubt over the upcoming remake.

While not the first adaptation of one of the author's novels, American Psycho certainly remains the most popular Bret Easton Ellis-based movie. After 25 years and numerous rewatches later, it's easy to see why. Ellis' work first made its way to the screen with the Robert Downey Jr.-starring Less Than Zero, an underrated gem tackling similar themes to Psycho, and later continued with 2002's The Rules of Attraction, which is technically connected to the Christian Bale-led movie, and 2008's The Informers.
Based on the book of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho follows Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) an investment banker in New York in 1987 who leads a double life as a serial killer. As investigators circle Bateman after the disappearance of a colleague, he finds himself trapped in a spiral of murder and excess, unable to stop himself from giving in to his increasingly dark urges.

Christian Bale leads the American Psycho cast in an unforgettable role, but there are other familiar faces in the pitch-black satire. Released in 2000, the movie adapts Bret Easton Ellis's puzzling book, introducing the unconventional Patrick Bateman, a successful banking executive. Despite being rich and an influential businessman in New York City, Patrick decides to give in to dangerous instincts, consumed by an insatiable desire to kill. American Psycho is a sharp send-up of men's obsession with materialism as Patrick effectively represents the embodiment of toxic masculinity and male privilege.

American Psycho’s ending reveals how many victims (if any) Patrick Bateman actually killed, how much of the movie takes place in his unhinged mind, and the overall deeper meaning. The movie's conclusion makes a point of leaving its events ambiguous during the discomfiting, blackly comic finale, demystifying none of its strange and seemingly contradictory occurrences. Based on the novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis, American Psycho sees young Wall Street banker Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) engaging in increasingly shocking, grotesque misdeeds throughout the movie while still working his day job and finding time for social events.
By the midpoint of American Psycho, Bateman has begun attracting attention, which leads to Jared Leto’s appearance as Paul Allen ending with an ax through his skull. Christian Bale's early career was charmed with breakout opportunities, in Empire of the Sun, Newsies, The Portrait of a Lady, and Little Women. However, he became a bankable actor in American Psycho, the film that introduced one of cinema's most iconic sociopaths.
American Psycho joins Hulu's streaming offerings this January. This 2000 psychological horror showcased the full spectrum of Christian Bale's acting ability. In American Psycho, Bale leaned heavily on method acting, so much so that co-star Chloë Sevigny had difficulty working with him during filming. "It was a really challenging dynamic for me, but I don't think that I thought he was bad," she recently told Variety. "I was just kind of confused, like, 'Why aren't you being social?' I wasn't even that aware of what the Method thing was. I never had any formal training; I think I was just kind of 'fake it until you make it.

Burns (“The Laundromat”), will not be a remake of the 2000 film, but a new adaptation of Ellis’ novel. Back in October 2024, a new American Psycho movie was announced to be in the works with Luca Guadagnino set to direct the film for Lionsgate. Now, we've just learned that Golden Globe Award-winning actor Austin Butler has joined the cast in the leading role of Patrick Bateman.
Euphoria star Jacob Elordi was rumored to have been in the running for the iconic role, but the casting ultimately didn’t happen. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story actor Cooper Koch had also expressed interest in portraying Patrick Bateman. However, Butler has now been confirmed to play the notorious serial killer character. He's best known for starring as Elvis Presley in Elvis (2022). He also had roles in the movies The Bikeriders and Dune: Part Two and a role in the war drama miniseries Masters of the Air.
Guadagnino's new American Psycho film adaptation will not be a remake of the 2000 movie of the same name.

Turn on some Huey Lewis and the News, because we have a new Patrick Bateman on the way. With acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino gearing up for his new interpretation of Bret Easton Ellis’ iconic book, American Psycho, Oscar-nominated actor Austin Butler is set to take on the central role.
According to Variety, Butler won the role over competition such as Jacob Elordi, who was rumored to be in final consideration as well.
Rather than a remake of the 2000 film, which starred Christian Bale, Guadagnino’s take on the story is a re-interpretation of Ellis’ source material. Scott Z. Burns is responsible for the new script. American Psycho is centered on Bateman, a Wall Street yuppie operating with barely-concealed violence; while the Bale film is a dark satire, there’s a chance Guadagnino could offer a new layer to the story, if his use of eroticism in cannibal love story Bones and All is any indicator.

Luca Guadagnino's upcoming remake of American Psycho has found its protagonist, and it's an Oscar-nominated actor that has been in everything, it seems, as of late. The first adaptation of the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis starred Christian Bale as Patrick Batemen, a cult classic role that is still revered among this generation of movie lovers. He has big shoes to fill, but Elvis star Austin Butler will now interpret the psychopathic, murdering businessman in the upcoming reimagining of the acclaimed early 90s book.
According to Variety, Austin Butler will be joining Guadagnino's American Psycho as the lead character, Patrick Bateman. A lot of people online thought that Jacob Elordi, who happened to also play Elvis in another film titled Priscilla, was a shoo-in for the role. However, Butler will officially embody the pop culture icon, who will be one of the more villainous roles he has played even...

Luca Guadagnino (Bones and All, Suspiria) will direct a brand new interpretation of the 1991 book American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis for Lionsgate, and Variety has announced this morning that Austin Butler (Dune: Part Two) will star as serial killer Patrick Bateman.
Scott Z. Burns pens the script, which is said to be a new adaptation of Ellis’s novel and not a remake of the 2000 film. Burns most recently created the Apple TV+ limited series “Extrapolations.”
In the story, “A wealthy New York City investment banking executive, Patrick Bateman (played by Christian Bale in the 2000 movie), hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies.”
It’s quite likely that Guadagnino and Butler will have a drastically different version of the character that Christian Bale made unforgettable in director Mary Harron’s adaptation.

New Patrick Bateman. What do you think? Oho. Very cool. Let's see Austin Butler's Patrick Bateman. Look at that subtle, off-Memphis Elvis Presley accent. The tasteful thickness of it. Oh my God, it even has an Oscar nomination. Yes, that's right, the Oscar nominated star of Baz Luhrmann's has been tapped to star as the iconic serial killer in acclaimed director Luca Guadanigno's new take on the iconic Bret Easton Ellis novel, American Psycho. Butler beat Jacob Elordi to the role, according to Variety, who reported the news, and it's funny because both of them played Elvis Presley recently. However, their views on Huey Lewis and the News are not yet known.

Austin Butler is set to star in Luca Guadagnino‘s new interpretation of the book “American Psycho” by Bret Easton Ellis for Lionsgate.
While there had been persistent rumors that the part went to Jacob Elordi (“Priscilla”), it turns out that it’s gone to Butler. Elordi and Butler have something in common, having both played very different versions of Elvis in movies by Sofia Coppola and Baz Luhrmann, respectively.
The film, which features a script by Scott Z. Burns (“The Laundromat”), will not be a remake of the 2000 film, but a new adaptation of Ellis’ novel.

For his latest film, “Oh, Canada,” writer/director Paul Schrader was faced with a conundrum. He knew he wanted to cast his “American Gigolo” collaborator Richard Gere as the older version of fictional Canadian documentarian Leonard Fife, but a great deal of the film would also cover Fife as a younger man as he escapes the Vietnam draft in America and crosses over the northern border.
Trying to find a younger Gere proved a predicament, especially since, in his youth, the “Days of Heaven” actor was recognized as quite the heartthrob. In a recent interview with Alison Stewart on her “All of It” podcast, Schrader discussed the Nsfw reaction to him finding Jacob Elordi for the part from one of his closet peers.
“I’m good friends with Bret Easton Ellis,” said Schrader. “And I was having dinner with Bret. I said, ‘I’m trying to cast a young Richard Gere.

Audiences may associate American Psycho’s Patrick Bateman with Christian Bale, but a new star has weighed in on rumors he will be leading the forthcoming remake from Lionsgate. Based on the satirical horror novel of the same name by Bret Easton Ellis, it would be Bale’s tenure as the movie adaptation’s investment banker and serial killer Patrick Bateman that would firmly establish him as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men. In October 2024, Lionsgate officially revealed that they would be pushing forward with a new American Psycho remake helmed by Academy Award nominated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino.

Hollywood writing partnerships dissolve for many reasons. There may be creative disagreements, personality conflicts, workload imbalances. For the celebrated author Dave Eggers and his younger brother Toph, who’d had a run of collaborations, the rupture in their bond could perhaps be attributed to all these things. But, mainly, to far deeper, darker troubles.
“For so many years I was locked in a certain relationship with Dave, and I just couldn’t see fault in him — and then, once I did, it flipped,” says Toph over one of several long meals at diners and delis across L.A.’s Eastside.
Dave emerged as a literary phenomenon a quarter-century ago with A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, his memoir about raising Toph after both of their parents died of cancer within weeks of each other. The book became a generational touchstone for its joking-but-not, manic-expressive style — evidenced in the title itself,...

An aspiring writer moonlighting as a sex worker to bring authenticity into his novel is the kind of premise that has endless possibilities. Many kinds of films of different genres—mainly dramas and thrillers—can be spun from it. In his latest movie, Sebastian, director Miko Makkela takes that premise and makes something that works both as a character study of a very ambitious individual and sort of a cautionary tale regarding what can happen if you go too far for your aspiration. The narrative of Sebastian is understandably dense, but thanks to sharp editing and a very compelling performance from its lead actor, Ruaridh Mollica, it never loses any steam. In this article, of course, we’re going to discuss the ending of the movie and the little bit of ambiguity around it. Let us take a closer look.

After the success of The Substance, Margaret Qualley has now been cast in a new horror movie titled Victorian Psycho, and its an unexpected twist on one of Christian Bales most acclaimed but controversial movies. Margaret Qualley has had a successful couple of years with movies that have caught the eye of critics and audiences for various reasons. 2024, in particular, has been an important year in Qualleys career, with the release of Ethan Coens crime comedy Drive-Away Dolls, Yorgos Lanthimos absurdist anthology movie Kinds of Kindness, and Coralie Fargeats body horror The Substance.
In addition to those projects, Qualley also had a minor but memorable role in Lanthimos Poor Things in 2023, which was key in boosting her career. Quentin Tarantino does not care about Lisan al Gaib.
More specifically, the Pulp Fiction filmmaker recently said he has no interest in watching fellow colleague Denis Villeneuve’s Dune adaptations, as he views them as symptomatic of Hollywood’s overreliance on remixing old IP (usually in a bid to mitigate risk and maximize profit).
“I saw [David Lynch’s original adaptation of] ‘Dune’ a couple of times,” he told Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho) on his self-titled podcast. “I don’t need to see that story again. I don’t need to see spice worms. I don’t need to see a movie that says the word ‘spice’ so dramatically.”
The Oscar winner continued, listing other titles he has shrugged off because their material draws from trodden ground.

Quentin Tarantino, best known for his supporting turn in "Destiny Turns on the Radio," has never been shy about his taste in movies. Tarantino has long been drawn to aggressively masculine genre films, Westerns, war pictures, martial arts films, and anything one might have seen at a run-down grindhouse theater in 1977. He also likes very terse, tense movies, and has listed Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver," William Friedkin's "Sorcerer," and Sergio Leone's "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" as his favorites. He's likewise admitted to having fond feelings for "The Great Escape" (who doesn't?) and thinks very highly of Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk." It's easy to guess that he similarly loves "Rio Bravo" and "Apocalypse Now," and he often recommends the Sonny Chiba vehicle "The Street Fighter" from 1974.
Despite his tastes, however, Tarantino remains cinematically omnivorous, taking in hundreds of movies a year, sussing out the pop...

The American Psycho soundtrack boasts some classic rock and pop hits from the 1980s. Songs by New Order and Genesis have even become synonymous with the movie, given the crucial scenes in which they play. Based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis and directed by Mary Harron, American Psycho revolves around a New York City banker who doubles as a serial killer at night. Rather than delving into familiar psychological thriller tropes, the highly quotable American Psycho takes a darkly comic approach as it decodes the consumerism and toxic masculinity that drives its twisted lead character, Patrick Bateman.
Music plays a chief role in American Psycho, given that Patrick has quite an interesting playlist. Despite the dark, homicidal things brewing in his mind, he listens to cheery songs while walking to the office. Joker: Folie Deux actually has a fan, and its none other than Quentin Tarantino. Now, to be fair, director Todd Phillips follow-up to 2019s Joker isnt a complete bust. While the majority of moviegoers despised the sequel, there are still those who enjoyed the pointless drivel, which culminated in the shocking death of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix). But while appearing on The Bret Easton Ellis podcast, Tarantino championed the Folly Deux, which he described as being directed by the Joker himself.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker said (per World of Reel):
I really, really liked it, really. A lot, like, tremendously, and I went to see it expecting to be impressed by the filmmaking. But I thought it was going to be an arms-length, intellectual exercise that ultimately I wouldnt think worked like a movie, but that I would appreciate it for what it is.
