While Anton Chekhov always thought of The Seagull as a comedy, that fact has frequently been forgotten through productions that fall into the soporific trap set by angsty, moping, lovelorn characters losing their hearts and minds in the Russian countryside.

There’s no such danger with Thomas Ostermeier, who once declared that he wanted to bring “some rock ‘n’ roll” to Ibsen (his Enemy of the People had the protagonist play Bowie covers in a band and open a political discussion with the audience). The firebrand German director now blasts the cobwebs off Chekhov with boisterous, dazzling delight.

But as irreverent as Ostermeier may seem — as self-referential, ironic, meta, playful — he’s true to his material. The reality of The Seagull is that it treads that fine line between comedy and tragedy. Emma Corrin, hot from playing villainous Cassandra Nova in Deadpool & Wolverine, will join Cate Blanchett in the eagerly awaited new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull at London’s Barbican Theatre in 2025.

Another addition to an already sizzling company is Kodi Smit-McPhee, who shot to fame in Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog. He also appears with an incandescent Angelina Jolie in Netflix’s awards-season hopeful Maria.

It’s a family reunion, of sorts, for Blanchett and McPhee. They play mother and son in Alfonso Cuarón’s brilliant seven-part Apple TV+ drama Disclaimer, which premieres on the streamer October 11. The two Australian-born actors also play related characters in The Seagull: Blanchett takes on the part of theatrical grand dame Irina Arkadina and McPhee plays her son Konstantin.

In 1973, the killer of Welsh teenagers Sandra Newton, Pauline Flynn and Gwendoline Hughes was not caught, despite a high-profile and widespread investigation by South Wales Police. The girls’ families spent the next three decades not knowing who was responsible for brutally taking the lives of their loved ones, or whether he still lived alongside them in the local Neath and Port Talbot communities.

In 2002, a development in forensics changed everything. The cold case was reopened with much pared-down resources, and crime scene DNA was successfully used to identify Wales’ first recorded serial killer. Steeltown Murders is the story of the loss, guilt and suspicion that followed the 1970s murders, and of the perseverance of the officers who were eventually able to provide the victims’ families with the answers they’d been denied years before.

I don't know about you, but I'd like to see Fall Harvest last a little longer with some Thanksgiving programming. maybe that's just me.

As with the Emmys, BAFTA divides its TV awards into two parts, with the main ceremony taking place in London on Sunday, May 12. At the craft awards on April 28, the big winners were two limited series — “A Very English Scandal” and “Patrick Melrose” — and the first season of the drama series “Killing Eve.”

“A Very English Scandal,” based on the Jeremy Thorpe scandal, won Costume Design, Director (Fiction) for Stephen Frears and Editing (Fiction). “Patrick Melrose” claimed Writer (Drama) for David Nicholls as well as Production Design “Killing Eve” took Original Music and Sound (Fiction).

Among the other marquee categories, Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper won Writer (Comedy) for “This Country”; Barbara Wiltshire took Director (Multi-Camera) for “Inside No 9 Live: Dead Line”; Woo-hyung Kimin landed Photography & Lighting (Fiction) for “The Little Drummer Girl”; and Make-Up & Hair Design went to “Vanity Fair.”

BBC One/Masterpiece’s newspaper drama Press has dropped its first teaser. The six-part drama kicks off in September in the UK and follows on Masterpiece next year. Set in the world of competing London papers and created by Doctor Foster‘s Mike Bartlett, the series stars Ben Chaplin and Charlotte Riley and features David Suchet. Check out the first look above.

100 Days of Ukip was definitely an intriguing prospect. The Channel 4 drama imagined what would happen if Ukip won the General Election in May, and followed its only female MP as she tried to put her stamp on her constituency.

There's no doubt that the show was really well put together, mixing archive footage, interactions with real members of the public and your standard drama. And Channel 4 insisted at a press screening recently that it was heavily researched and based on Ukip policies (with an expert there explaining that it was all believable - you know, except for the idea of Ukip winning in the first place).

Channel 4 also pointed out that the show wasn't all "Ukip is bad" and gave the fact that it mentioned the party's planned dedication to the NHS as an example.
