Going to the theatre still feels like a fancy, special occasion. It can also be a bit on the pricey side, but the National Theatre has taken great steps to making the productions more accessible with special cinema screenings of selected shows.

Sky Arts is now making National Theatre productions even more accessible by bringing three different plays to TV for the very first time. Othello, The Crucible and two versions of Frankenstein will be aired on Sky Arts, Freeview and Now.

Othello, directed by Clint Dyer, stars Giles Terera, Rosy McEwen and Paul Hilton, while Erin Doherty and Brendan Cowell star in The Crucible which was directed by Lyndsey Turner. Both plays were originally performed in 2022 and captured on the stages of the National Theatre.

Paapa Essiedu is a 34-year-old British-Ghanaian actor who moves seamlessly between stage, TV and film. Brought up in Walthamstow, north-east London, he trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama before joining the RSC. At 25, he became the first black actor to play Hamlet for the company. Essiedu was also Kwame in the 2020 BBC comedy drama I May Destroy You, created by his Guildhall classmate Michaela Coel. Next up, he stars in Death of England: Delroy, the second of Clint Dyer and Roy Williams’s state-of-the-nation trilogy of plays, which premiered at the National Theatre between 2020 and 2023 and are now being performed together in the West End. Essiedu lives in London with his wife, the actor and comedian Rosa Robson.

Ali, the Broadway-bound musical about boxing titan and 20th century icon Muhammad Ali, who sought to use his fame to champion human rights, is headed for a springtime rumble in Chicago.

The show, part of the next Broadway in Chicago season, will have its out-of-town premiere at the James M. Nederlander Theatre from April 22-May 18, 2025.

Richard Willis, Ali‘s lead producer, told Deadline that the production is raring to go.

The creative team is led by the show’s writer and director Clint Dyer, the deputy artistic director of London’s National Theatre, and by its composer, the conductor and musician Teddy Abrams, who is music director of the Louisville Orchestra.

A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip has joined the creative team for Ali, a new musical theater production based on the life of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. As revealed by Deadline, he has signed on as music producer, co-lyricist, and cast album producer.

Directed by Clint Dyer with music composed by Teddy Abrams, Ali began its journey as a multimedia project titled The Greatest: Muhammad Ali, which premiered in 2017 with the Louisville Orchestra (of which Abrams is the director). Abrams and other collaborators had the idea to turn the project into a full-on musical designed for Broadway, and since then, momentum has grown, with acclaimed saxophonist Casey Benjamin and music supervisor Sean Mayes coming aboard.

Exclusive: Q-Tip, the legendary rapper, producer, singer and lyricist, will be adding his hip-hop know-how to the Broadway-bound Ali, a musical about Muhammad Ali’s life in and out of the boxing ring.

The acclaimed rhymer has been signed on by Ali lead producer Richard Willis as music producer, co-lyricist and cast album producer, and will work alongside director and book writer Clint Dyer, deputy artistic director of UK’s National Theatre, and Teddy Abrams, the show’s composer.

Abrams is music director of the Louisville Orchestra, based in the city where the heavyweight champion and a titan of the 20th century was born.

Back in 2017, Abrams wrote multimedia opera-rap-oratorio mashup The Greatest: Muhammad Ali, which premiered with the Louisville Orchestra at the Kentucky Center in Louisville.

It’s succession season at the UK’s National Theatre with Rufus Norris, the institution’s Artistic Director, announcing that he will step down in 2025 after a decade in the post.

“It’s good to keep leadership evolving,” Norris noted during a press conference at the National’s base on the south side of the River Thames, in the shadow of Waterloo Bridge.

The National’s board will determine Norris’s successor. They will cast a net far and wide and there’s an eagerness to end the white male hold on the Nt’s leadership.

The UK’s Windrush Caribbean Film Festival is readying its fourth edition, which will be the first to run under the artistic direction of Emmanuel Anyiam-Osigwe, the founder of the British Urban Film Festival.

The festival will honour the 75th anniversary of the arrrival of the Windrush generation in the UK, the people from the Caribbean countries who came to work in the nascent National Health Service and the sectors facing a post-war labour shortage between 1948 and the early 1970s. Hmt Empire Windrush was one of the ships that carried them to the UK.

Exclusive: The Broadway-bound Ali musical, based on the life of three-time world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali, will have its world premiere in the late sports superstar’s birthplace in Louisville, Kentucky in Fall 2024, Deadline can reveal.

Richard Willis, the show’s lead producer, told me that Ali will float “like a butterfly” into the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts for a three- or four-week run. An opening date hasn’t been set yet but it’s likely to be in October or early November next year.

Deadline broke the news about the musical in September last year.

Willis was speaking to Deadline in London where he was reuniting with Ali director and book writer Clint Dyer, who serves as deputy artistic director of London’s National Theatre, and composer Teddy Abrams, the music director and conductor of the Louisville Orchestra.

Knife Edge, the 2020 thriller novel and Sunday Times bestseller by veteran U.K. broadcaster and former BBC radio host Simon Mayo, has been optioned for TV by U.K. production company iGeneration Studios. The story of boxing legend, philanthropist and civil rights activist Muhammad Ali is being adapted into a new Broadway musical developed in partnership with his wife Lonnie Ali.

Ali, announced on Wednesday by lead producer Richard Willis, will be written and helmed by the Olivier Award-nominated director Clint Dyer (Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical). The show’s music will be by Teddy Abrams, the youngest musical director to lead a major American orchestra.

U.K.-based distributor Dcd Rights has acquired Grammy-nominated feature documentary “Music, Money, Madness… Jimi Hendrix Live In Maui.” The 90-minute documentary chronicles guitar legend Jimi Hendrix’s visit to Maui in July 1970 and details how he became ensnared in “Rainbow Bridge,” an ill-fated independent film produced by his manager, Michael Jeffery.

Jeffery secured a 300,000 advance against the promise of a soundtrack album by Hendrix — the first time a movie was funded solely by an album. Jeffery hired Chuck Wein, a former associate of Andy Warhol, to direct. However, without a script or professional actors, the shoot was proving one of excess. With Hendrix and the Experience already booked to play Honolulu, Wein, desperate to feature the band, planned to film them playing on the slope of the dormant Haleakala volcano. The show was a success but the film, less so.

Exclusive: Giles Terera (Death of England: Face to Face), winner of an Olivier Award for his portrayal of Aaron Burr in the London transfer of Broadway hit Hamilton, will star in a history-making production of Shakespeare’s tragedy Othello, with Rosy McEwen, who won acclaim in the second season of The Alienist, as Desdemona.

The play will be directed at the UK’s National Theatre by Clint Dyer, marking the first time the play has been directed by a Black man at a major British venue. American-born Shakespearean scholar Dr. Jami Rogers hailed the outcome as “a major milestone in the history of British Shakespeare.”

Dominic Cooke says he is stepping away from directing next year’s Get Up, Stand Up – The Bob Marley Musical after recent conversations on race changed his mind about helming the stage project.

“In recent weeks the conversation about race has changed in theatre, as it has across society. Barrie Keeffe, known for penning the screenplay for Brit gangster classic The Long Good Friday, has died aged 74 in London following a brief illness.

Keeffe’s agent, Stephen Durbridge of The Agency, confirmed the news.

London-born playwright and screenwriter Keeffe started out as an actor and journalist. His first television play, The Substitute, was produced in 1972, and his first theatre play Only A Game in 1973. He was the Royal Shakespeare Company’s writer-in-residence in 1978 and he went on to write a number of film, TV and stage plays in the 1980s.

BAFTA-nominated 1980 crime-drama The Long Good Friday, about an up-and-coming gangster, starred Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren in a breakout role. Keefe also adapted his own stage play Sus, about police racism, for the 2010 movie of the same name starring Rafe Spall and Clint Dyer.

Screenwriter Barrie Keeffe, who penned the screenplay for the classic British gangster movie “The Long Good Friday” – which starred Helen Mirren in a breakout role – has died. He was 74.

Keeffe’s agent, Stephen Durbridge of The Agency, confirmed the news and said that his client had died in London following a short illness.

Keeffe started out as an actor and journalist, then became a self-professed political writer. His theater work included plays such as “Frozen Assets” for the Royal Shakespeare Company, about a young man who kills a prison officer, and “Sus,” about institutionalized police racism. Netflix released a brand new trailer for the upcoming season of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror. The two-minute trailer consists of a mix of clips from the new episodes as well as the launch date for the new season.

If you happened to blink for a really long time towards the end of the trailer and didn’t catch the launch date, it is December 29, 2017. Just in time to binge watch on your holiday break.

Netflix’s Emmy-winning “Black Mirror” has been thoughtfully doling out details of its highly anticipated fourth season throughout the past couple week, and the show finally revealed a full trailer. In addition, viewers finally when their misery will end (or begin, depending on just how bleak the installments are), as the streaming service also revealed the release date, Friday, Dec. 29.

The trailer, which can be seen below, ranges from futuristic sets with robots and spaceships to more mundane settings. According to EW, at an early PaleyFest screening of “USS Callister,” creator Charlie Brooker revealed that the episode was conceived as an adult “Toy Story” and it’s about “living under a tyrant.” Its obvious riff on “Star Trek” means that it’s grander in scope and uses a healthy amount of lens flares.

The episode by episode teaser march toward the new season of “Black Mirror” continues, with what might be the most visually audacious offering yet: “Metalhead.”

David Slade (“Hannibal,” “American Gods“) gets behind the camera for this black and white instalment, starring Maxine Peake, Jake Davies, and Clint Dyer that keeps the plot under wraps (the only thing we have to go on is the super brief logline: “Beware of dogs”), but seems to promise some bloody, apocalyptic horror.

In order to stoke excitement for the upcoming season of “Black Mirror,” individual episode trailers have been released, giving sneak peeks of the standalone stories making up this season. Netflix released one of the most striking ones on Dec. 3 with “Metalhead,” written by series creator Charlie Brooker and directed by David Slade. Best known for helming “Hard Candy,” “30 Days of Night,” and key episodes of shows such as “Hannibal” and “American Gods,” Slade brings a black and white chapter to “Black Mirror.” Starring Maxine Peake (“The Theory Of Everything”), Jake Davies (“The Missing”), and Clint Dyer (“Hope Springs”), details on the episode are slim so far, save the video’s haunting description: “Beware of Dogs.” But judging by the intense footage, it appears to be one of the more horror-heavy installments of the series.

Yes, we've heard that exact emotional plot description 100 times before, so here's yet another vengeance movie for those who want it. Starring Antonio Banderas as Frank Valera, with a cast including Cristina Serafini as his wife, plus Karl Urban, David Sakurai, Paz Vega, Robert Forster, Lillian Blankenship, and Clint Dyer. ‘Black Mirror‘ is a show that I absolutely love. In what is the closest thing to a modern day ‘Twilight Zone‘, creator/show runner Charlie Booker‘s hypnotic series has managed to captivate audiences in it’s first three seasons. The show – which was originally aired on BBC – was expanded to a six episode format after Netflix picked up the show for it’s third, and now fourth season, and is highly anticipated to say the least.

Season 3 was backed by some incredible talent, and based on the trailer for season 4, this trend seems to be continuing. In particular, this upcoming season provides a hefty dose of talent in the director’s chair that includes: Jodie Foster, John Hillcoat (The Road, Lawless), David Slade (Hannibal), Colm McCarthy(Peaky Blinders) and Toby Haynes (Dr Who), Tim Van Patten(The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire).

Netflix has today unveiled the freaky first teaser for Black Mirror season 4, along with the stellar cast list and official episode titles. In keeping with the show’s knack for puzzles and confounding, reality-altering mystery, the trailer above is a super-sleek and fairly ominous peek at those “six new stories,” all of which come from the mind of series creator and showrunner, Charlie Brooker.

Goalpost Film and Noah Media Group are working on a feature-length documentary about the life of controversial civil rights activist Michael X, who was executed in 1975.

Clint Dyer co-directs with Gabriel Clarke. Clarke previously co-directed Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans (with John McKenna), which was in Official Selection at Cannes in 2015. He is also an award-winning sports broadcaster.

Director, writer and actor Dyer directed the Olivier-nominated production The Big Life, and is currently developing a new play on Michael X for Stratford East.

Michael X will be produced by Noah Media’s Victoria Barrell and John McKenna and executive produced by Tristan Whalley and Jessie Mangum of Goalpost Film, who will introduce the project to buyers at Cannes this year.

Dog & Duck Films, who worked on Amy and Senna, are the archive producers.

Us Marine Mike is in quite the pickle: he’s stepped on a landmine and if he lifts his foot it’ll explode. On top of that, he’s in the middle of a baking desert and is out of water. On top of that, his best friend just stepped on another landmine and exploded into bloody chunks. The good news is that he’s managed to radio command and request a rescue. The bad news is that he’ll have to wait 52 hours for them to get there. Eek.

Mine dramatizes this torturous waiting game, and the vast majority of the film is spent watching Mike, sweatily played by an increasingly gross-looking Armie Hammer, standing still (and sometimes kneeling) in the middle of a featureless desert as he struggles to stay sane and stay alive.

"What if every step could be your last?" Well Go has debuted a trailer for an indie drama titled Mine, about a Us soldier stranded in the desert after his mission goes awry. I'm surprised we haven't heard about this film before? This is the first I've come across it at all. Armie Hammer stars as Mike, a Us soldier on an assassination mission in the Middle East. He ends up stranded standing on top of a mine in the desert for over two days, struggling to survive amidst the elements. The full cast includes Annabelle Wallis, Tom Cullen, Juliet Aubrey, Geoff Bell and Clint Dyer. This looks surprisingly quite good, not as bland or as cheesy as expected from the description.
