Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed Buffy Summer and her Scooby gang as they protected Sunnydale from vampires, demons, and any other supernatural threat that came up. The first couple of seasons featured mostly stand-alone stories, or “vampire of the week” as they were dubbed. It also adopted ending some episodes with little twists or questions, which was a popular storytelling device in the '90s on sci-fi and fantasy shows like The X-Files.
One such episode was season one’s “Out of Mind, Out of Sight.” Buffy and friends took on an invisible girl out for revenge against the popular kids. Its intriguing twist ending still has audiences wondering about it years later. Some fans have even created their own little head cannons to fill in the blanks and tie it to another Buffy storyline from season four—where it would have fit perfectly.

For thousands of years, it’s been believed that laughter is the best medicine. Unfortunately, it appears that the laughs in the new Netflix comedy “Kinda Pregnant” have been recalled. What’s worse, the side effects include irritation, drowsiness and a very dull headache.
“Kinda Pregnant” stars Amy Schumer, who co-wrote the screenplay, as Lainy Newton. She’s a middle-aged schoolteacher who always dreamed of settling down and being a mother. She also sleeps on a futon with some kind of magical spring system that sends her flying across her apartment, which happens often enough (allegedly — we only see it the once) that she has to keep a pile of pillows in the landing zone.
Believe it or not, this futon will be important later, although not for the right reasons.
Lainy thinks her boyfriend Dave (Damon Wayans Jr.) is about to propose, but it’s the beginning of a romantic comedy,...

The 2003 indie drama "Thirteen" was widely acclaimed upon release while elevating the careers of filmmaker Catherine Hardwicke (who was paid just $13 for the job) and actors Evan Rachel Wood and Nikki Reed. For those looking for movies tackling similar subject matter and themes, there is no shortage of teen coming-of-age dramas. From triumphs to tragedies, plenty of movies have explored the everyday life of American teenagers, both preceding "Thirteen" and released in the 2003 film's wake.
From dramedies to tonally uncompromising dramas, those pivotal teenage years are ripe for cinematic exploration. Even the comedies on this coming-of-age list don't shy away from the heavier parts of the teenage experience, including illegal drug use, mental health concerns, and teen pregnancy. Sci-fi horror fans, we've got some exciting news you're going to want to hear! A beloved cult horror classic from the '90s is getting a remake, and it's stirring up some serious buzz. While remakes can be hit or miss, we're hoping the remake of this fan-favorite sci-fi horror will both honor the original and bring a fresh twist to the story. If it manages to strike that balance, it'll definitely be a hit in our book.
What horror classic is getting remade? Well, it'll be the 1998 sci-fi horror flick The Faculty, which starred talented actors such as Josh Hartnett, Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Laura Harris, Salma Hayek, Famke Janssen, Shawn Hatosy, Christopher McDonald, and Elijah Wood. This movie was also a box-office hit, drawing audiences in with its mix of teen drama, sci-fi thrills, and horror elements.

You know you're old when Hollywood starts remaking films released when you were in high school. Premiering on Christmas day in 1998, The Faculty was the meta answer to sci-fi films in the same way 1996's Scream was to the slasher movie sub-genre. It was a modest hit upon release, but it has gone on to develop a major cult following with genre fans. This was bound to happen sooner or later, and it looks like that time is now, because a remake is officially in the works.
Per Variety, a remake of The Faculty is set at Miramax and the director of the original film, Robert Rodriguez, is on board as a producer. What makes this remake news promising is that Drew Hancock is writing the project. That name may not be immediately recognizable, but he's an emerging talent who wrote and directed this weekend's Companion, a new horror film...

Margot Robbie was almost cast in American Horror Story: Asylum? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Back in 2012, Margot Robbie auditioned for American Horror Story: Asylum, the season packed with all things creepy and Emmy-worthy. But despite delivering an audition that made jaws drop, she didn’t land the role.
Casting director Eric Dawson spilled the beans on Backstage’s In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast, calling Robbie’s audition one of his “favorites of all time.” He said, “She was such a star. It was crazy, her star appeal when she walked in the room. Even though she didn’t get that role, you just knew—this is a star. What do we do with her?”
At that point, Margot was fresh off the short-lived Pan Am (2011–2012), where she played a 1960s stewardess—sadly, the show didn’t take off, but Robbie’s ambition was about to. With a fearless mindset,...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the TV show The Handmaid's Tale.Emily, the quietly defiant Handmaid brought to life by Alexis Bledel in The Handmaid's Tale TV series, is a character who resonates deeply with audiences. Unlike her book counterpart, the nameless Ofglen, the show granted her a distinct identity, making her a pivotal figure in the resistance. Her journey, marked by both resilience and heartbreak, culminated in a seemingly triumphant escape to Canada.
However, Emily's sudden disappearance in season 5 left a gaping hole in the narrative. While the show hints at her return to Gilead to continue the fight, this sudden departure feels unsatisfying for a character who has endured so much. The series is one of the biggest TV shows returning to screens in 2025 and expectations are high. Now The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 holds the potential to rectify this by providing Emily with a more fulfilling conclusion,...

Winter, often perceived as the bleakest season with its barren landscape, year-end melancholy, and unresolved struggles, has also been eulogized for its introspective beauty. Austrian poet Rilke, writing to a woman devastated by her husband’s desertion, described winter as a time to nurture one’s inner garden—tending to the mind and spirit after a period of endurance. Albert Camus echoed this sentiment: “In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” Similarly, films like The Holiday depict this growth, framing heartbreak and recovery against the cozy charm of swapped holiday lodgings, emphasizing renewal and comfort over sorrow.
Here are ten films like “The Holiday” that somewhat capture the same spirit:
10. Serendipity (2001)
That winter, and by extension, Christmas, is supposed to be interspersed with miracles is retold through “Serendipity.” One element in particular echoes throughout the film: the appeal of fate and destiny.

Poker Face is prepping for a big return in 2025, so here's a quick reminder of how this quirky Peacock mystery series unfolded in season 1.
Created by Riann Johnson, Poker Face is basically a love letter to the TV mystery movies of the 1970s. The pilot introduced us to Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne), a Vegas card shark with a sardonic attitude. She's enlisted by Sterling Frost Jr (Adrian Brody), son of a powerful mobster and casino boss who wants to use Charlie in a classic setup of being a "ringer" for a rich guy and bilk him in a card game.
Charlie, you see, has a unique talent. For reasons she can't explain, she's a living lie detector. Somehow, some way, she always knows when someone is lying and will call them on it. That's a boon for a card player and why she was banned from playing before Sterling Jr.

It’s not uncommon to see the same actor playing several different roles at the same time, especially on TV shows.
Shawn Hatosy has a role on Rescue: Hi-Surf but is also a recurring face on Chicago Pd. Both roles portray Hatosy as an entitled white male in charge who’s not afraid to bend the rules to get his way.
It’s not the first time Hatosy has taken on roles that depict him negatively. He’s one of those actors who is great at playing a jerky bad guy. However, he also has numerous memorable characteristics as an okay guy.
(Lori Allen/NBC)
Hatosy fans from the ’90s might remember him from his early days when he took on awkward teen roles to expand his filmography.
He had several small supporting roles, racking up time with big names like Brittany Murphy (Double Jeopardy) and James Russo (No Way Home...

6 Movies to Watch if You Liked ‘Our Little Secret’ on Netflix: Lindsay Lohan’s delightful return to the rom-com genre continues to charm audiences, with Netflix’s new Christmas outing, Our Little Secret offering a perfect blend of family drama, romance, and screwball comedy. Directed by Stephen Herek, the film brings Old Hollywood sensibilities to a modern Christmas story, complete with Lohan’s sharp charismatic screen presence and a story about reconciling with the past. The story follows Avery (played by Lohan), a sharp and successful business consultant, as she prepares for her first encounter with the wealthy and eccentric family of her boyfriend, Cam (Jon Rudnitsky), during a four-day Thanksgiving weekend. However, things take a turn when she discovers that Cam’s sister Cassie (Katie Baker) is also bringing home her boyfriend, Logan (Ian Harding)—Avery’s childhood best friend and ex-boyfriend, with whom she had a messy breakup a decade ago.

Without Christmas movies and TV, the holiday season would feel lacking, not just for movie buffs, but for everyone who celebrates the unwritten custom of getting together and watching something Christmas-themed the night before completes other traditions. While some people have a ritual of revisiting their favorite Christmas film every year, others look forward to Christmas movies releasing as recently as 2024. From romcoms like Meet Me Next Christmas, to horror films like Terrifier 3, Christmas has become the setting for all genres of cinema.
A common fixture of the Christmas film is everyone's favorite bearded man who flies in with his reindeer every year. Without Santa Claus, it would not entirely feel like Christmas. Well, not entirely. While there have been slasher movies with Santa in them, and the occasional movies with moral messages being spread by Santa, many films just use the premise of Christmas to tell stories that...

Christmas movies are a thing on their own. They tend to be heartwarming dramedies akin to slice-of-life movies that make us emotional but also offer us a sense of warmth and comfort. Centred around the year-end festival, these movies often speak about the spirit of togetherness and are drenched in a cosy, celebratory spirit of the festival. From Frank Capra’s ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ to Alexander Payne’s ‘The Holdovers’, we have seen the festival bringing people together, literally or emotionally. Tyler Taormina’s ‘Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point’ is the latest, charming addition to this list that uses its big ensemble to offer a time capsule to a a bygone era.
While Christmas is a cause for celebration, it may not be the same for everyone everywhere. Some may cherish getting together and sharing the same space with their families. For some, it can be pitch-perfect like...

It is almost fitting that George Huang’s Weekend in Taipei comes out nearly 30 years after his razor-sharp and ruthless black comedy, Swimming with the Sharks. You just have to wonder what took his son so long to make another movie. That biting, back-stabbing comedy still holds up and showcases the talents of a filmmaker who can embed comedy within any genre.
I mention this because Weekend in Taipei is a comedy wrapped in an action film. This doesn’t mean the movie’s tone is uneven or unsure of itself—far from it. While Huang’s script occasionally stumbles into a few tropes, like Luc Besson’s mysterious character arc or a Parent Trap-esque subplot, the experience is refreshing, super cool, funny, and ultimately one hell of a ride.

Sarah Michelle Gellar will likely always be known as an icon of genre work and supernatural teen dramas, but she's given great performances besides her star-making role in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. While fans of Buffy will always see Gellar as the heroine of the beloved TV show, before, during, and after Buffy was on the air, Gellar lent her talents to plenty of projects of multiple genres. However, some of the best have leaned into her skills in horror, as she's an expert at blending comedy into serious and violent moments, which always elevates a scary movie.
Being able to communicate the nuances of horror and drama by incorporating tongue-in-cheek and self-aware elements into her performance is one of the actress' best skills, as seen in Buffy. However, Sarah Michelle Gellar doesn't want a Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot, but that doesn't mean the actress hasn't been open about her love of the show.

In the early 2000s, studios began to see the potential in Japanese horror films and how they could be translated for an American audience. Horror fans were already aware of the films of Hideo Nakata, Takashi Miike, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, and others, but more casual moviegoers likely didn't search that part of the world to get their quick scare fix. Taking advantage of how the horror landscape was evolving and changing, DreamWorks Pictures optioned to remake Nakata's 1998 Japanese horror film, Ringu, for an American audience.
With The Ring, director Gore Verbinski was able to take the shell of that original story and make it accessible to American moviegoers, tapping into the supernatural elements that were familiar to them in other horror movies. The move was a success,...

Stories of young love have always captured the attention of moviegoers and the 1990s and 2000s saw a lot of teen romance movies add to the genre. While not every teen movie from this time period aged well, many of them remain watch-worthy for more than just nostalgia. Whether it is the beautifully executed tropes of friends-to-lovers, enemies-to-lovers, miscommunications, nerds and jocks falling in love, or just some classic teen coming-of-age stories, these remain absolute classics.
Teen romance movies can be comedic high school adventures or dramas that tug at the heartstrings, but they always seem to play out like a modern fairy tale. It's not every day that a teenage outsider learns they're actually royalty or becomes embedded with the most popular kids in school, but teen rom-coms find a way to make the audience believe it. Director John Carpenter is a master of the horror genre, creating iconic classics like Halloween and The Thing that would go on to be major influences in the genre. On the other hand, Jason Statham has become one of the most recognizable action heroes. He got his start with Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and went on to lead franchises like The Expendables and The Transporter. Both men are incredibly talented in their respective fields, yet the two did cross paths on one production.
John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars saw him working with actor Jason Statham and offered the action star his first foray into the horror genre. Despite the talent behind the project, Ghosts of Mars did not fare well at the box office. We will examine how the movie came together, its failure to impress critics, and how time has played in the movie's favor.

When the Veep cast reunited Sunday night, the audience who tuned in to the live table read event was warned, “No dogs or cats were eaten during the making of this program.”
The message — a dig at Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump (a similar one came the night prior on Saturday Night Live‘s political opener) — was delivered in voiceover by Gary Cole, who played Kent Davidson, senior strategist to star Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Selina Meyer, who served as both the 45th and 47th president of the HBO’s show version of the United States.
The next introduction came from Matt Walsh, who played Meyer’s press secretary, Mike McLintock. “Many people assume that Kamala Harris is Selina Meyer,” he said in character, stumbling through the speech. “Im here to say she 100 percent is…not. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her Veep co-stars reunited this week to support Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 presidential election. The veteran actress portrayed Vice President Selina Meyer in the series, a role that garnered her nine Emmy Awards as star and producer. Fans have noted similarities between the character and Vice President Harris, but Louis-Dreyfus has stated that Meyer shares more similarities with Donald Trump than his political opponent, Deadline reports.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is willing to admit her Veep character bears some similarities to a real-life presidential nominee.
Amid the show’s election year resurgence, the Golden Globe winner reasoned that her morally bankrupt politician character Selina Meyer is more like Donald Trump than his opponent Kamala Harris.
“In Veep, I play a very unhappy vice president, and at a certain point in a run of the show, I have the opportunity to run for president,” she explained on MSNBC.
“Now, I do want to say one thing about the character I play on Veep. I do want to say I play a very, shall we say, almost narcissistic, sociopathic, mega-maniacal type of person,” added Louis-Dreyfus. “I am not a Kamala Harris type. I am possibly much more like someone from the other party whose name I shall not even utter.”

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
This September, we’re celebrating Back to School Night with four midnight movies that aren’t just academically themed but also teach the lessons essential to understanding this school of cinema.

Back in 2014, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Veep character Selina Meyer became the first female U.S. president by way of the sitting president not seeking reelection. A decade later, we’re living in a similar timeline in the real world as Vice President Kamala Harris continues her campaign for the presidency. Ahead of the 2024 election, Louis-Dreyfus and the cast of Veep are reuniting for a table read of “Crate,” the pivotal episode in Season Three where Selina receives the news that the Potus baton is being passed to her.

When President Joe Biden announced he was dropping his 2024 re-election bid and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic presidential nominee, Veep started to see a resurgence both in Max viewership and on social media. And one of the most recirculated and memed moments in the wake of the Biden-Harris news was a scene when Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character finds out she’s going to be president of the United States.
Since so many people have been rewatching that Veep scene, Louis-Dreyfus and the cast of the hit, Emmy-winning political comedy have now decided to reunite for a virtual table read of that episode in support of “helping Dems win up and down the ballot in Wisconsin,” the star and executive producer announced on Thursday, along with the Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler.

Not unlike Harvard, Yale, or the elite university in “Halloween H20,” the admissions rate for titles featured in our weekly watch-and-rewatch club is competitive. We want to see every Tubi, Freevee, and fringe Shudder effort out there.

“I always thought the only alien in this high school was me.”
In 1985, John Hughes set a template for high school archetypes in his classic film The Breakfast Club. The brain, the athlete, the basket case, the princess and the criminal became part of our collective consciousness while expanding ideas of adolescent identity. But 13 years later, these stereotypical roles had begun to feel stifling. While reassuring to know that each identity is valid, the tendency to define your life by an external ideal could keep young adults from overcoming the fear of being themselves. In 1998, Robert Rodriguez applied a sci-fi lens to these classic archetypes in The Faculty, a teen horror film that explores the terror of conformity. A high school faculty taken over by monsters becomes the backdrop for a nuanced dissection of stereotypical expectations and discontent adolescence in a treacherous high school environment built to dehumanize.

Amy Adams has been in development with Nightbitch for quite a while, but you can now get a first look at the new surreal film now that a trailer has recently released from Searchlight Pictures. The film has been written and directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Nightbitch is based on a novel by Rachel Yoder. The film will tell the story of “a suburban mom thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler. As she embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a dog.”
Adams plays that possibly canine housewife. Scoot McNairy (Monsters) is also in the cast, playing her “oft-traveling husband,” while Mary Holland, who is best known for appearing in the Netflix release Senior Year and for co-writing and co-starring in Clea DuVall’s romantic comedy Happiest Season,...
