Happy Memorial Day, everyone! While you’re off enjoying some much-needed downtime with friends and family, we’ve gone ahead and put together a recap of this week’s horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases that are coming our way on May 30th.
For those of you cult film aficionados out there, get those wallets ready, because there’s a bunch of great titles arriving on Blu-ray this Tuesday, including Blackenstein, Evil Ed, The Blood of Fu Manchu / The Castle of Fu Manchu double feature, The Hearse, The Undertaker, Slaughterhouse Rock, and Hide and Go Shriek.
As far as new genre films go, The Blackcoat’s Daughter (one of my personal favorites of 2017) and Rupture are making their way to Blu-ray and DVD, with the Shock-o-Rama box set also coming out on DVD.

The 2016 blu ray release of the Frankenstein and Wolf Man Legacy Collections was a moment of celebration for movie and monster lovers everywhere, bringing together all the golden age appearances of Frankenstein’s misbegotten creation and Larry Talbot’s hairy alter-ego. Universal Studios treated those dusty creature features to luminous restorations; from Bride of Frankenstein to She Wolf of London, these essential artifacts never looked less than impeccable and, at times, even ravishing. Colin Clive’s frenzied declaration, “It’s Alive!”, never felt more appropriate.
Now Universal has turned their attention to their other legendary franchise players, Dracula, the sharp-dressed but undead ladies’ man and Im-ho-tep, the cursed Egyptian priest who loved not wisely but too well.

Tuesday, November 8th is a big day for politics, but on the home entertainment side of things, it’s a relatively quiet week for Blu-ray and DVD releases, as we have only a few bright spots to look forward to. Scream Factory has given Don Coscarelli’s modern classic Bubba Ho-Tep the Collector’s Edition treatment, and for you cult cinema fans out there, both The Initiation and Night Has a Thousand Desires receive a much-needed HD upgrade as well.
Other notable releases for this Tuesday include Halloweed, Bleed, Amigo Undead, and Gorgasm.

Speaking of horror-comedies and things returning, Return of the Killer Tomatoes was also recently released to Blu-ray, this time by the Us chapter of Arrow Video. I know, you’re thinking to yourself “Return of the Killer Tomatoes, really?” Yes, really, and honestly, it deserves every inch of the Criterion-like treatment that Arrow Video gives their releases. It’s not a great movie, and it definitely doesn’t retain a lot of the novelty established by the original, but it features a very young and sex-starved George Clooney, and even though it recycles a lot of footage, it’s actually a pretty fun time. It’s not up there with Return of the Living Dead, but it has a fan base, of which I am a member.
This sequel takes place ten years after the events of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, in a land where people live in fear of tomatoes,...

Other notable titles being released this Tuesday include Alien Strain, Shark Exorcist, Forgotten Tales, and Hotel Inferno.
Alien Strain (Mti Home Video, DVD)
After his girlfriend vanishes without a trace on a camping trip, he quickly goes from witness to suspect. Now, a year later, she returns to the very spot from which she was taken, but not like she was before.

Stars: Sean Connery, John Cleese, Shelley Duvall, Ian Holm, Michael Palin, Ralph Richardson, Peter Vaughan, David Warner, David Rappaport, Kenny Baker, Malcolm Dixon, Mike Edmonds, Jack Purvis, Tiny Ross | Written by Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin | Directed by Terry Gilliam
Time Bandits was first released in 1981. A family adventure film that sported a fantastic and massive cast of names, with the likes of Sean Connery, John Cleese, Shelley Duvall, Ian Holm and Michael Palin, among others. It was like a fantastical family film with the cast of Monty Python.
Director and another former Python, Terry Gilliam, who went on to direct such incredible cinematic events as Brazil, Twelve Monkeys and Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas was behind the camera here, much like he was in the Monty Python movies and it feels very similar to his previous work in many ways. Surreal and at times incredibly weird, Time Bandits just feels like a Gilliam film.

Back in late 1989, Tor Books began a huge promotion for Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. Contracted as far back as 1984 to write a traditional trilogy, publisher Tom Doherty already knew Jordan –based on previous novels Tor had published with the author- that he had a tendency to go long. So they signed him to a six volume deal instead. It was Doherty who deemed the series the next Lord of the Rings, and pushed the book hard, mostly by sending out Advanced Readers Copies to almost every bookstore on the planet. But the strategy succeeded and on January 15, 1990, Eye of the World was released. It quickly became a best seller, with fans asking when the next book was coming out. And Jordan did keep a great pace, writing as fast as he could, releasing the second book only eight months later. Books three through six were released roughly a year apart after that.

Looks like someone is standing behind Amanda Bynes this time around.
The actress, 26, threatened to sue Bauer Publishing's tabloid In Touch magazine after they printed a disturbing story about her mental health last week, claiming she was spotted walking around a Beach Bum tanning salon in New York City completely naked.
"She didn't seem to care that everyone saw her naked," a source told the publication. "She seemed totally out of it ... There was definitely something wrong with her."
Well as it turns out, there seems to be something wrong with the magazine's insiders.
Beach Bum's CEO, James Oliver, is supporting Bynes and her denial, telling Us Weekly: "Employee testimony and security footage have confirmed that Ms. Bynes was not acting inappropriately. She is a long-time client and we stand by her account."
Bynes released a statement on Nov. 1, revealing to Us Weekly that she is planning on taking legal action against Bauer Publishing.

Amanda Bynes was not naked in a tanning salon despite reports, the business's owner has confirmed. A recent In Touch Weekly article alleged that the former actress had been seen "completely naked" at the New York establishment and claimed that she was acting strangely. However, Bynes later strongly denied the rumours and vowed to sue the publication over the report. The company's CEO James Oliver has now verified Bynes's account and suggested that the article had been untrue. "Employee testimony and security (more)...

Bam Margera made it big by putting his private parts in jeopardy for millions of viewers worldwide on the MTV hit show, "Jackass". Now this skateboarding daredevil is taking what may be his biggest risk yet: trying to make it as an artist.
According to his gallery: "Margera creates a parallel of subtle social commentary that causes an echoing nostalgic theme consistent throughout his works that is both insightful and enjoyable." Whether or not this is true, the Jackass star got to the heart of the matter in an interview with Espn, saying, "I'd say mostly I paint hot chicks." His paintings contain some of the ugliness of a Basquiat work without any of the originality. Yet is it just us or is Margera's genuine, blunt attitude about art kind of refreshing?
His recent twitter feed has been abuzz with art musings, and he struggles with many issues facing budding artists.

I commend all who responded, in part or in full, to David Thomson's first Stump-the-Film-Buff movie quiz, 50 questions strong, for your deep love and knowledge of the spectrum of global film, old and new. Twenty-four film savants submitted answers to all 50 questions, and two brainiacs got them all right. Two buffs weighed in with only one wrong answer, but the one who submitted first won third place. Four more got just two answers wrong. Thomson will send the three winners below a signed copy of his must-own New Biographical Dictionary of Film, fifth edition. Congratulations to: First place: Germany's Christoph Michel submitted the winning entry on November 12 (1:37 pm Pacific). Second place: U.K.'s James Oliver submitted his entry with all 50 right ...
