Sofia Coppola's Priscilla is now showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries.Priscilla.Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla (2023) is deceptively soft to the touch. In adapting Priscilla Presley’s 1985 Elvis and Me memoir, the filmmaker brings an astonishing life story to the big screen, but also all of the beautiful, enviable objects that line the cage of celebrity. From luxurious Cadillacs to a lush array of sparkly designer dresses, accessorized with equally shiny handguns, these markers of luxury hum with palpable allure. At the same time, a sense of foreboding looms large. The opening shot lingers on the perfectly manicured feet of Cailee Spaeny’s Priscilla as they gingerly step across a shaggy, coral-pink rug. The seductive, tactile tableau conjures pleasure and comfort, yet it also foreshadows how Priscilla will sink further and further into a gilded sepulcher throughout her turbulent relationship with Elvis, embodied here by Jacob Elordi. Celebrated...

We’ve come a long way, baby. But we’re finally ready to start handing out the 2023 Emmy Awards, a full four months after they were initially scheduled. Just how long have the 2023 Emmys been in the making? Well, nominees include “The White Lotus,” which hasn’t aired since December 2022. After decades spent firmly in the zeitgeist, the pop cultural legacy of "Star Trek" shows up in some unexpected places -- like an episode of Guillermo del Toro's horror anthology directed by "Mandy" filmmaker Panos Cosmatos. In a recent interview with Variety, production designer Tamara Deverell described the process of building the set for "The Interview," an episode of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities" that takes place largely inside a hazy, orange, retro-futuristic room.
Fans of "Cabinet of Curiosities" will remember "The Interview" as perhaps the show's trippiest installment. The hour stars comedians Eric André, Steve Agee, and Charlyne Yi, plus actress (and future "Rebel Moon" star) Sofia Boutella, actor Michael Therriault, and screen legend Peter Weller. In what appears to be a curious slow-burn experiment, a group of disparate people -- including a psychic, novelist, record producer, and astrophysicist -- are gathered together in a drug-filled mansion...

Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” “Priscilla” starts at the very beginning of her relationship with Elvis Presley (Elordi), who began to pursue her when she was 14 and he was in his 20s. It traces their lives together over many tumultuous years. It was important to “map out” Priscilla’s arc “before we went into the filming process,” and then “you just sort of had...

It’s appropriate that Netflix dropped the sixth season of “Black Mirror” on June 15, the same day that Emmy voting began. The series isn’t eligible for this year’s awards, of course, but it has been a dominant force at the Emmys for years, even sparking a rule change that affects a number of other anthology programs this year.
And because of that rule change, it’s going to be a lot harder for any of those other programs — which include “Documentary Now!” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” — to be nominated for Emmys this year.
First, a little background. “Black Mirror,” created by Charlie Brooker and first airing in 2011, was inspired by the classic 1950s and ’60s series “The Twlight Zone,” in which Rod Serling used each episode to tell a different story — usually creepy or scary, usually with a twist, always with a moral. Production designer Tamara Deverell was tasked with creating eight different periods and working with eight different directors for Netflix’s “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.”
The anthology series required Deverell, 2020’s artisan award recipient for production design, to tap into her love for building gritty sets and build everything from a brutalist architecture room inspired by her work on “Star Trek: Discovery” to using an old warehouse for an alien autopsy.
Here Deverell breaks down some of her favorite sets from the series.
“Lot 36″
The first episode tells the story of Tim Blake Nelson as Nick Appleton, who purchases the titular Lot 36 from a recently deceased old man and discovers strange items such as a séance table and rare books. However, the Lot also holds dark demonic secrets
What were some initial conversations you had about the set build for this?
That was storage lockers gone crazy. We built the storage lockers.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi” seems like the kind of no-brainer, easy layup, slam dunk that is conceived quickly and executed even more quickly. We’re talking a limited series from Disney+ and Lucasfilm that followed the titular Jedi in the lonesome time between the prequels and 1977’s “Star Wars: A New Hope.” But it was not so fast and easy. In fact, for years, McGregor had no idea if he’d ever play the wise mentor again. “There was a constant social media noise about another Obi-Wan project, and I was constantly asked in every interview that I ever did,” he said. “Eventually I would answer truthfully and I would say, ‘Yes, I would totally be up for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi again.’”

It’s enough of a task to create the look for one horror mini-feature, but imagine if your assignment was a total of eight, in the style of “Tales from the Crypt” or “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.” And each had a different director. And none of the stories were directly related to one another. And all were overseen by a beloved Oscar-winning filmmaker whose name alone is a brand. “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” production designer Tamara Deverell knew going in that it would be challenging to serve every vision, with filmmakers as diverse as Jennifer Kent (“The Babadook”), Panos Cosmatos (“Mandy”), Vincenzo Natali (“Splice”) and Ana Lily Amirpour (“A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”) as her just-for-starters roster.

She adds, “I’m not just designing to go, ‘oh I’m going to create a cool set.’ I’m doing it to facilitate the story. Hopefully the cool set comes out of that, but it is secondary. Story is everything.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

This post contains spoilers for episode 2 of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities."
After Guillermo del Toro sets up the premise for episode 2 of "Cabinet of Curiosities," titled "Graveyard Rats," the narrative follows a grave robber named Masson (David Hewlett) whose livelihood is endangered due to pesky rats. A horrifying tale about greed and hubris, Graveyard Rats" evokes anxiety and claustrophobia, especially when Masson crawls through narrow underground tunnels in which primordial forces lurk in the darkness. Hewlett, who is sublime as the con man who waxes poetic, struggled during the underground tunnel scenes, as it was a little too claustrophobic for his liking.
The episode director, Vincenzo Natali, recently spoke to Newsweek and recounted the experience of filming in crawl spaces, joking that he was "scarred for life." The "Cube" director also praised Hewlett's dedication to the uncomfortable scenes, as the role demanded a considerable level of physicality. Natali said:

This article contains spoilers for “Graveyard Rats” in Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.
The use of practical effects is one of the best ways to distill terror into its purest form. Horror is a difficult genre to perfect, and using realistic effects and physical models to engulf the viewer into a believable world will help with the whole “scare people” thing that is the objective of the genre. The makers of “Graveyard Rats” from Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities on Netflix certainly agree.
The short film, which premiered today alongside fellow short film “Lot 36,” takes the audience on a bone-chilling thrill ride through the catacombs of an underground graveyard. The protagonist of the episode, a grave robber named Masson (David Hewlett), goes with his heart instead of his head when rats start to steal the corpse that possesses the prized jewelry he needs to sell. Guillermo del Toro joins the ranks of episodic genre anthology curators like Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Serling with his “Cabinet of Curiosities.” Del Toro assembles a Murderers’ Row of horror filmmakers for his limited anthology series, each story contained within his ornate oddities cabinet. That singular, eponymous item doesn’t just anchor the anthology but serves as a visual representation of the type of vintage scary story collection that “Cabinet of Curiosities” unfurls.
Del Toro introduces each selected tale like a sophisticated carnival barker. A short monologue ensues as the genre maestro opens his cabinet and plucks out a representative item for each curated story along with a carved figurine of its director. Series creator and executive producer del Toro hand selected each story and director, uniting their distinct visions through a recurring theme of hidden, shifting realities. The episodes range from the macabre to classic frights to the fantastical,...

Sure, “Marie Antoinette” and “Priscilla” are set 200 years apart, but writer-director Sofia Coppola can’t help but compare the two historical women ahead of her upcoming Priscilla Presley biopic.
Coppola’s 2006 film “Marie Antoinette” starred Kirsten Dunst as the iconic royal who reigned amid the French Revolution. Now, the “Bling Ring” helmer adapts Priscilla’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me” with Cailee Spaeny (“Mare of Easttown”) and Jacob Elordi playing married couple Priscilla and Elvis. Priscilla serves as an executive producer of the film.
“I’m excited to do something rooted in that Americana style for the first time. And Priscilla is a quintessential glamor icon,” Coppola told Vogue. “I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it all felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland. She was going through all the stages of young womanhood in such an amplified world — kind of similarly to Marie Antoinette.

Oscars Winners List – Updating Live
Both Vermette and Sipos are first-time winners, though the former had previously been nominated for his work on the films The Young Victoria and Arrival. The pair bested the teams behind Guillermo del Toro’s carnival noir Nightmare Alley (production designer: Tamara Deverell,...

The films competing for the 2022 Best Production Design Oscar are “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” “The Power of the Dog,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” and “West Side Story.” Our odds currently indicate that “Dune” (16/5) will be the winner, followed in order of likelihood by “Nightmare Alley” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “The Tragedy of Macbeth” (9/2), and “The Power of the Dog” (9/2).
Six of the individual craftspeople in this lineup have been nominated before and four have won at least once. The only newcomers in the bunch are production designers Stefan Dechant (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”) and Tamara Deverell (“Nightmare Alley”) and set decorators Amber Richards (“The Power of the Dog”) and Zsuzsanna Sipos (“Dune”).
Nancy Haigh (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”) is on her ninth bid and could add a third trophy to her collection after having triumphed for “Bugsy” (1992) and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (2020). The only other woman who has achieved three...

None of the 13 precursor prizes announced winners before Oscar nominations were revealed on February 8. However, all but one of them — the Casting Society of America — revealed their roster of contenders before the start of Oscar nominations balloting on January 27. The CSA, which chimed in on February 1, will be the only guild to hold its ceremony after final Oscar voting ends on March 22; the Artios Awards are the next day.
Before Oscar voting kicked off on March 17, we heard from eight guilds. The makeup artists and hairstylists weighed in on Feb. 19 while the actors were heard from on Feb. 27. Two guilds — art directors and film editors — held ceremonies on March 5. The visual effects wizards handed out prizes on March 8, the costume designers on March 9, the directors on March 12 and the sound editors on March 13.

As Oscar voting opens, the guild awards could prove a guide — or bellwether — to who will take home trophies March 27.
Last week’s Costume Designers Guild handed out prizes to “Cruella” (period film), “Dune” (fantasy/sci-fi) and “Coming 2 America” (contemporary).
The CDG has matched Oscar 11 times since 1999 (when the guild first handed out awards) for best costume design with one of their winners. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021 was the most recent, and in 2019 it was “Black Panther.” So there’s a good chance that the category’s frontrunners, “Cruella” and “Dune,” will take home the win.
The Makeup and Hairstylist Guild Awards kicked off crafts season in February, awarding “Coming 2 America” three trophies, while “Cruella” took home best period hairstyling. “America” got a boost, as the guild favored the regal styles of the film’s fictional Zamunda over the transformations of Stellan Skarsgard in “Dune,” Jared Leto...

With final Oscar voting on March 17, Variety staff members put forth their last-minute recommendations for artisans whose names they hope to hear at the 94th Academy Awards. If you haven’t cast your final vote, consider these accomplishments, from a music legend’s epic score to sweeping cinematography that could mean a historic win.
Adam Stockhausen and Rena DeAngelo Production design, “West Side Story”
The tremendous production design of “West Side Story” drew me into the story like nothing else I saw last year. Steven Spielberg’s remake rewrites the script of the musical, incorporating the looming demolition of the San Juan Hill neighborhood for the construction of Lincoln Center.
Stockhausen and DeAngelo’s work is vital for establishing that sense of place and time, situating the battles between the gangs on mountains of rubble and barren streets to show how close this world is to being erased. But the...
