After decades spent firmly in the zeitgeist, the pop cultural legacy of "Star Trek" shows up in some unexpected places -- like an episode of Guillermo del Toro's horror anthology directed by "Mandy" filmmaker Panos Cosmatos. Writer-director Sofia Coppola adapts Priscilla Presley’s autobiography “Elvis and Me” for her A24 film “Priscilla,” starring Cailee Spaeny as the American icon alongside Jacob Elordi as Elvis.

“Priscilla” follows the eponymous heroine from meeting Elvis as a teenager to eventually leaving him and Graceland behind. The film marks Coppola’s third feature with A24 following “On the Rocks” and “The Bling Ring.” Coppola reunites with collaborators like cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, costume designer Stacey Battat, editor Sarah Flack, and production designer Tamara Deverell for the period piece. The film charts 14 years in Priscilla’s life, starting at age 14 when she met 24-year-old Elvis.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where Spaeny won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, and is set to screen as the Centerpiece feature at the New York Film Festival.

Director Coppola has opened up about how she could relate to Priscilla’s coming-of-age in the public eye.

Mubi has snapped up rights across multiple territories for Sofia Coppola’s upcoming feature Priscilla ahead of its world premiere in Competition at the 80th Venice Film Festival.

Under the deal, the global film distributor, production company and streaming service will retain all rights in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Latin America, Benelux and Turkey.

The company is planning to release the drama theatrically in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Latin America, Belgium and Netherlands, starting in 2023, and will announce release dates soon.

The Match Factory is handling sales for the rest of the world excluding North America and Italy, which have been previously announced as pre-sold respectively to A24 and Rome-based Sky Italia subsidiary Vision Distribution.

Written and directed by Sofia Coppola, Priscilla is based on the 1985 memoir Elvis and Me co-authored by Priscilla Presley and Sandra Harmon.

She is up for Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” in the editing in a limited or anthology. series category, HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and Hulu’s “History of the World, Part II” in the picture editing for variety programming slot. With the latter two, she will be going up against editors from NBC’s “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter,” Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” and the editors of “Saturday Night Live.”

Writer-director Coppola’s “Priscilla” biopic, based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” will make its North American debut as the Centerpiece screening for NYFF 2023.

“Priscilla” stars Cailee Spaeny as the American icon, with Jacob Elordi portraying Elvis Presley. The Centerpiece screening will take place at Alice Tully Hall on October 6, with this year’s NYFF running from September 29 through October 15.

This morning when the Emmy nominations were announced, Zimmer (Dune) was cited for the score of Apple TV+’s Prehistoric Planet and Shore (The Lord of the Rings) collected his first Emmy nom for Amazon’s The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power. They are among those celebrating Creative Arts Emmy nominations.

Nominees who could add an Emmy next to their Academy Awards are Oscar winning sound mixer for Bohemian Rhapsody Paul Massey (Emmy nominated for David Bowie doc Moonage Daydream alongside three-time Oscar nominee David Giammarco); sound supervisors John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone (Oscar winners for Bohemian Rhapsody, who are Emmy nominated for Moonage Daydream); and mixer Skip Lievsay (Oscar winner for Gravity, who is Emmy nominated for Still: A Michael J. Sofia Coppola is focusing on a 20th-century American princess for her first feature since 2020’s “On the Rocks”: Priscilla Presley.

After helming 2006 film “Marie Antoinette,” Coppola takes on adapting Priscilla’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me.” The film, titled “Priscilla,” stars “Mare of Easttown” actress Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla and “Euphoria” breakout Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley.

Per a Deadline source, Spaeny was Coppola’s first choice to portray Priscilla, while “Euphoria” star Elordi auditioned for the role of Elvis. Coppola writes, directs, and produces “Priscilla,” which spans 12 years. Spaeny portrays Priscilla across ages 15 to 27.

Frequent Coppola collaborators cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd, costume designer Stacey Battat, editor Sarah Flack, and production designer Tamara Deverell also signed on to the A24 period piece.

Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 critically acclaimed Elvis brought the couple’s story to life on the screen with Austin Butler and Olivia DeJonge. Elvis, obviously, focused on the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, while Coppola’s Priscilla tells the story of Elvis’s first love.

The film is based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir Elvis and Me, with Sofia Coppola adapting the book and directing. Dagmara Dominczyk (Succession) also stars, and Coppola, Lorenzo Mieli, and Youree Henley serve as producers.

Coppola’s behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Philippe Le Sourd, production designer Tamara Deverell, editor Sarah Flack, costume designer Stacey Battat, and music supervisor Randall Poster. The film’s score is by Phoenix.

It’s appropriate that Netflix dropped the sixth season of “Black Mirror” on June 15, the same day that Emmy voting began. The series isn’t eligible for this year’s awards, of course, but it has been a dominant force at the Emmys for years, even sparking a rule change that affects a number of other anthology programs this year.

And because of that rule change, it’s going to be a lot harder for any of those other programs — which include “Documentary Now!” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” — to be nominated for Emmys this year.

Production designer Tamara Deverell was tasked with creating eight different periods and working with eight different directors for Netflix’s “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.”

The anthology series required Deverell, 2020’s artisan award recipient for production design, to tap into her love for building gritty sets and build everything from a brutalist architecture room inspired by her work on “Star Trek: Discovery” to using an old warehouse for an alien autopsy.

What were some initial conversations you had about the set build for this?

That was storage lockers gone crazy. We built the storage lockers.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi” seems like the kind of no-brainer, easy layup, slam dunk that is conceived quickly and executed even more quickly. We’re talking a limited series from Disney+ and Lucasfilm that followed the titular Jedi in the lonesome time between the prequels and 1977’s “Star Wars: A New Hope.” But it was not so fast and easy. In fact, for years, McGregor had no idea if he’d ever play the wise mentor again. “There was a constant social media noise about another Obi-Wan project, and I was constantly asked in every interview that I ever did,” he said. “Eventually I would answer truthfully and I would say, ‘Yes, I would totally be up for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi again.’”

And all were overseen by a beloved Oscar-winning filmmaker whose name alone is a brand. “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” production designer Tamara Deverell knew going in that it would be challenging to serve every vision, with filmmakers as diverse as Jennifer Kent (“The Babadook”), Panos Cosmatos (“Mandy”), Vincenzo Natali (“Splice”) and Ana Lily Amirpour (“A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”) as her just-for-starters roster.

Everything Everywhere All At Once won for Fantasy Feature Film, the Damien Chazelle-directed early Hollywood epic Babylon took the Period Feature prize and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was honored for Contemporary Feature.

Since the guild launched its trophy show in 1996, one of its top prize winners — for Fantasy, Period or Contemporary Feature — or has gone on to win the Art Direction/Production Design Oscar in 18 of the 26 years, including the past nine in a row. Last year’s Adg’s Fantasy Film winner Dune went on to score the Academy Award.

The 27th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards has announced its nominations in 14 categories, including theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, music videos and animation features.

Winners will be unveiled at the Adg Awards ceremony on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at the InterContinental Hotel Los Angeles Downtown Hotel. The announcement was made today by Adg President Nelson Coates, Adg, and Awards Producer’s Michael Allen Glover, Adg and Megan Elizabeth Bell, Adg.

Returning as producer of this year’s Adg Awards is Art Director Michael Allen Glover, Adg. Joining the team as coproducer is Production Designer Megan Elizabeth Bell, Adg.

Adg Awards are open only to productions when made within the US by producers signatory to the IATSE agreement. Foreign entries are acceptable without restrictions.

The guild announced the nominations for its 27th Excellence in Production Design Awards in motion pictures, television, commercial and music video categories.

Winners will be named at the Adg Awards ceremony on Feb. 18 at the InterContinental Hotel Los Angeles Downtown Hotel.

The Adg divides live-action features into three categories. “All Quiet on the Western Front, “Babylon,” “Elvis, “The Fabelmans” and “White Noise” were nominated in the period feature film category.

“The Batman,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Nope” earned recognition in the fantasy feature film category.

Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design three times: in 2018 for The Shape of Water, in 2020 for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and in 2021 for Mank. The production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category in 2019, for Black Panther; and 2022 for Dune.

After Guillermo del Toro sets up the premise for episode 2 of "Cabinet of Curiosities," titled "Graveyard Rats," the narrative follows a grave robber named Masson (David Hewlett) whose livelihood is endangered due to pesky rats. A horrifying tale about greed and hubris, Graveyard Rats" evokes anxiety and claustrophobia, especially when Masson crawls through narrow underground tunnels in which primordial forces lurk in the darkness. Hewlett, who is sublime as the con man who waxes poetic, struggled during the underground tunnel scenes, as it was a little too claustrophobic for his liking.

The episode director, Vincenzo Natali, recently spoke to Newsweek and recounted the experience of filming in crawl spaces, joking that he was "scarred for life." Sure, “Marie Antoinette” and “Priscilla” are set 200 years apart, but writer-director Sofia Coppola can’t help but compare the two historical women ahead of her upcoming Priscilla Presley biopic.

Coppola’s 2006 film “Marie Antoinette” starred Kirsten Dunst as the iconic royal who reigned amid the French Revolution. Now, the “Bling Ring” helmer adapts Priscilla’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me” with Cailee Spaeny (“Mare of Easttown”) and Jacob Elordi playing married couple Priscilla and Elvis. Priscilla serves as an executive producer of the film.

“I’m excited to do something rooted in that Americana style for the first time. And Priscilla is a quintessential glamor icon,” Coppola told Vogue. “I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it all felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland. She was going through all the stages of young womanhood in such an amplified world — kind of similarly to Marie Antoinette.

The Directors of Guild of Canada unveiled nominations for its 21st Dgc Awards on Nov. 5 on Friday. Del Toro, who shot Nightmare Alley mostly in and around Toronto, did not receive a nomination for best feature film direction.

But del Toro’s tribute to the film noir genre, which starred Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett, did earn Oscar-nominated production designer Tamara Deverell a Dgc Awards nod in the same category, Cam McLauchlin a nomination for feature best picture editing, and best sound editing nominations for Nathan Robitaille, Jill Purdy, Dashen Naidoo, Josh Brown, Nelson Ferreira, Kayla Stewart, Craig MacLellan and Kevin Banks.

Step aside Austin Butler, there’s a new Elvis in the building.

Hot off of Butler’s turn as the King of Rock ‘n Roll for Baz Luhrmann’s mind-bending biopic “Elvis,” Jacob Elordi will play the “Jailhouse Rock” crooner for A24 drama “Priscilla.”

Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” the film will be directed by Sofia Coppola and star “Mare of Easttown” breakout Cailee Spaeny as the ex-wife of Elvis. Coppola also adapted Priscilla’s New York Times bestselling memoir for the big screen.

Per a Deadline source, Spaeny was Coppola’s first choice to portray Priscilla, while “Euphoria” star Elordi auditioned for the role of Elvis. The film marks Oscar winner Coppola’s first feature since “On the Rocks” starring Rashida Jones and longtime collaborator Bill Murray. Coppola also produces the film, along with Fremantle Company, American Zoetrope, and Sony’s Stage 6 Films will finance the film.

The Elvis comeback tour continues.

With Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis proving its bona fide hit status by crossing the 150 million domestic mark, another Elvis feature project is heating up.

The story of Priscilla Ann Presley, who married Elvis Presley, is getting the biopic treatment courtesy of filmmaker Sofia Coppola and A24.

Coppola wrote the script and will direct the project, titled Priscilla, which will star Cailee Spaeny as Mrs. Presley. Jacob Elordi, one of the stars of The Kissing Booth as well as Euphoria, will portray the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Filming begins in Toronto this fall.

Production designer Patrice Vermette and set decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos took home statuettes for their work on Dune at the Academy Awards on Sunday, with Vermette paying “special” tribute to his “friend” Jean-Marc Vallée—the Canadian filmmaker behind Big Little Lies, Dallas Buyers Club and more, who died suddenly in December, aged 58.

Vermette also thanked director Denis Villeneuve “for allowing us to dream” and “for being a great friend,” saying, “I owe this to you.”

The Critics Choice Association honored expected Oscars heavyweights “The Power of the Dog,” director Jane Campion, and actors Will Smith, Jessica Chastain, Troy Kotsur, and Ariana DeBose at the 2022 Critics Choice Awards on Sunday night.

The Ee BAFTA Film Awards took place on March 13 just a few months ahead of the television awards ceremony, which will be held later this year. On Feb. 3, the nominees for each film category were announced, including the highly anticipated rising star award, which previously saw "Top Boy" star Michael Ward take the win back in 2020 and "Rocks" star Bukky Bakray win in 2021. Now in its 17th year, the rising star award is the only one voted for by the British public and was won by Lashana Lynch.
