The episode of Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie covering Black Water was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Animal attack movies have been quite a lucrative genre for a very long time. Obviously, Jaws is the beginning and the end of the conversation but there’s so much more. Grizzlies, whales, dogs, you name it have been the focal point of horror films and will continue to be there with things like Cocaine Bear, The Meg 2, and others infiltrating theaters on a yearly basis. Most of these, of course, are fictional accounts like Stephen King giving us Cujo or any number of other on-screen animals gone wild. There are, however, the rare account that is based on a true story and today is one of those cases. Alligators and crocodiles...

Agatha Christie, the “Queen of Crime”, whose novels are still adapted for the screen with machine-like regularity, knew that the question in the title of her 1934 mystery Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? was too good to pass up. “You don’t know yet who Evans is going to be... Evans will come in due course,” she once wrote. “The title is fixed.” Well, after a century of intriguing readers, that central proposition is now being brought to television viewers in the form of a three-part Britbox series, starring, written and directed by Hugh Laurie.
Narnia’s Will Poulter steps into the Christieverse as Bobby Jones, a happy-go-lucky vicar’s son who finds a dying man during a round of golf. “Why didn’t they ask Evans?” the man splutters with his final breath and Bobby is thrust on the trail of murderers, kidnappers and dope fiends. He’s ably...

Don’t feel bad if you haven’t heard of the name Hilma af Klint until recently — or before finding your way to “Hilma,” Lasse Hallström’s somewhat syrupy, conventional yet still respectable attempt to broaden the general public’s knowledge of, and affection for, the Swedish abstract artist. If so, you can hardly be blamed for your unawareness, considering af Klint’s longtime (and only recently reversed) obscurity in art circles.
Hers is a story as old as time: A brilliant, ahead-of-her-time woman goes largely ignored despite significant contributions to her field, while her male counterparts claim the spotlight and all the glory. In that regard, it was af Klint herself who invented the notion of abstract painting years before Wassily Kandinsky, one of the most regarded Modernists and abstract painters of all time. And when she died in 1944, her magnificent work was locked away and kept from the public eye for years.

Like most art lovers, the prolific filmmaker Lasse Hallström had never heard of the prolific painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) until recently. Af Klint was disregarded, discouraged, sidelined and overlooked during her lifetime, but except for a four-year period, she never stopped creating. She took painting beyond representational still lifes and landscapes and into the uncharted sphere of abstraction, several years before Wassily Kandinsky would claim the mantle of that innovative leap. Her work sat in storage for 20 years after her death, per her instructions, and none of it is for sale.
What a (market-free) discovery of the groundbreaking artist it’s been, beginning with the landmark 2013 exhibit that wowed museumgoers in Stockholm before traveling to seven other European cities and New York. Halina Dyrschka’s 2019 film Beyond the Visible, the first feature-length documentary about af Klint, explores the breadth and depth of her legacy from a revisionist art history...

Black Water is one of those rare instances where “based on true events” isn’t just a gratuitous tagline. The 2007 movie (later followed by an unrelated and more polished-looking sequel) is in fact inspired by an event from a few years earlier — near the Finniss River in the Northern Territory of Australia, two people were stranded in a tree after a massive predator killed their friend, then continued to stalk them. While that real-life account and this piece of fiction are substantially different in most respects, they both illustrate the terrifying unpredictability of “salties.”
After spending Christmas vacation with family, Black Water’s three main characters set off on a number of small adventures before returning to their humdrum lives. It’s only when sisters Lee and Grace and Grace’s husband Adam (Andy Rodoreda) go fishing in a mangrove do they encounter one of Australia’s most dangerous residents.

Hilma tells the remarkable story of trailblazing artist Hilma af Klint, which is something of family affair with the film directed by Lasse Hallstrom, and starring his wife Lena Olin, and their daughter Tora, both playing the title role. The film boasts an impressive ensemble, and it’s the ensemble we spent time with – as we spoke to Maeve Dermody, Lily Cole & Tom Wlaschiha about this period piece.
We discussed how important women like Hilma were in history, and what it is about her art that the cast like most. They also talk about their experiences shooting the film – and of course, we couldn’t help but ask Wlaschiha about his experience shooting Stranger Things, and what it’s like starring in shows such as that and Game of Thrones.

Tom Wlaschiha and Jazzy de Lisser (“Game of Thrones”) have joined the cast of Viaplay’s major English-language original feature “Hilma.” The film is written and directed by Lasse Hallström, the Oscar-nominated director of “The Cider House Rules” and “My Life as a Dog.”
The biopic, which explores the life of revolutionary Swedish artist and feminist pioneer Hilma af Klint, will bow this fall in theaters and on Viaplay, Scandinavia’s leading streaming service.
Wlaschiha stars as Rudolf Steiner, the Austrian artist and founder of the anthroposophical spiritual movement. Steiner became a key figure and mentor for Hilma af Klint who created more than a thousand striking paintings, sketches and watercolors that remained largely unknown until decades after her death.
The film explores the enigmatic life of Klint, who navigated through a male-dominated artistic scene to eventually become one of the Western world’s first abstract artists.

With the pandemic causing a slowdown in production, there’s an opportunity for already-shot shows from across the pond to fill the gap. Adapted from the novel by Cecil Day-Lewis, “The Beast Must Die” is an intense and reflective tale of grief, vengeance, and privilege that’s as impossible to stop watching as I’m sure the book itself is to read. Anchored by Cush Jumbo and Jared Harris’ indomitable performances, the addictive import could even fill the void left by other crime dramas like “Mare of Easttown.”
Frances Cairns (Jumbo) details her intentions in the opening minutes of the series: “I’m going to kill a man.” She doesn’t know who the man is or where he lives, but his days are numbered. Said man ran over her six-year-old son, Marty, in a hit-and-run, leaving Frances to pick up the pieces of a life left utterly broken. Having...

In AMC’s six-part revenge thriller “The Beast Must Die,” Cush Jumbo plays a mother who will stop at nothing to find her son’s killer. It’s her toughest role to date, but she welcomed the challenge.
“I was looking for something that would stretch me, and Gaby Chiappe’s script came across my desk and it was truly the best script that had passed over my lap, maybe ever,” she said. “I just couldn’t put it down, and I thought, ‘I have to do this’, so from the very beginning I was quite excited by it. So, yes, I was working hard, but I was enjoying it because I enjoy working hard.”
In the limited series, Jumbo stars as Frances Cairnes, who takes matters into her own hands after learning the police have dropped their investigation into her son’s fatal hit-and-run. Posing as a novelist researching a new murder-mystery,...

"I've come across some information about myself, I think it explains quite a lot..." Vertical Entertainment has released an official US trailer for a quirky British romantic comedy titled Love Type D, which initially premiered a few years back at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2019. It's finally getting a US release on VOD this summer for those interested in catching up with it. And it looks good! A charming new take on always-feeling-like-a-failure at romance concept. A woman who has been dumped eleven times in a row, discovers (to her dismay) that she has a loser in love gene. So she reluctantly recruits a schoolboy science prodigy to help her reverse her romantic fortunes. The film stars Maeve Dermody as Frankie, with Rory Stroud, Oliver Farnworth, and Tovah Feldshuh. I'm not sure why it took so long for this film to finally get a US release, because it feels like...

Lucy Boynton (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Will Poulter (“The Revenant”) are set to star in Hugh Laurie’s adaptation of “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?”, one of Agatha Christie’s earliest murder mystery novels.
Laurie (“House”) is set to direct and act in the three-part series for BritBox North America, in which he plays the creepy Dr. James Nicholson, a clinical director of a sanatorium.
Christie published “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?”, which follows Bobby (Poulter) and shrewd socialite Lady Frances (Boynton) as they untangle a murder mystery, in 1934. In classic Christie fashion, there are plenty of twists and turns until the perpetrator is finally unmasked.
“I’m so thrilled to be working with Hugh and Will, and on this story from one of my favourite authors,” said Boynton. “I can’t wait to get started.” She won’t have to wait long with production kicking off this week.

BritBox, the ITV and BBC joint-venture streamer, has announced that it is developing a second season of its UK drama series The Beast Must Die.
Produced by New Regency Television and Ridley Scott’s Scott Free, BritBox said the first two episodes of the Jared Harris and Cush Jumbo drama have broken viewing records since premiering last week, but the service declined to disclose actual figures.
Vera writer Gaby Chiappe adapted the first season from the 1938 novel of the same name by Nicholas Blake, the nom de plume of poet Cecil Day-Lewis, father of Daniel Day-Lewis. It tells the story of a grieving mother who infiltrates the life of the man she believes killed her son.
Season 2 will be an original story told by Chiappe, which has been titled A Sword in my Bones. It will center on Billy Howle (The Serpent), who is poised to reprise his role as Detective Nigel Strangeways.

Leon Ford in ‘The Letdown’ (Photo credit: Tony Mott).
Admirers of Leon Ford who enjoyed his work as Ruben in the ABC’s The Letdown and other shows should savour his performance in Jeremy Sims’ upcoming movie Rams because after that he will be off screen for a while.
The actor-writer moved to Los Angeles last year with his wife Alice Bell and their three young children as Alice serves as the writer/creator and co-showrunner on The Expatriates, a 10-part Amazon series produced by Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films.
Based on Janice Y.K. Lee’s novel, the series centres on a group of close-knit American women and their lives as outsiders in Hong Kong and is yet to go into production.
“I would like to find a happy medium that a lot people have where they can go and back forth and do jobs,” he tells If during a family vacation in Australia.
