A young boy residing in the Brewster projects of Detroit follows his friend to a stash house unaware that the consequences of this moment will shape the rest of his life. He’s coerced into dealing as a means for survival—the only way to convince his friend’s bosses that he isn’t a snitch being to actually engage in the activities he would be snitching on. So he ignores another friend just trying to say hello, his fear towards talking to her while “working” too much to utter a single word. A car pulls up, he walks over, and chaos commences. Off he runs with two grown men in pursuit. Either he avoids a speeding car by falling (and getting caught) or he diverts trajectory and keeps going.

In this week’s missile of a The New York Times story about the many alleged indiscretions of Harvey Weinstein, one of his past colleagues, former Miramax Los Angeles president Mark Gill, describes Weinstein’s professional climb from indie producer to Hollywood titan. “From the outside, it seemed golden — the Oscars, the success, the remarkable cultural impact.” Yet Gill said the persistent whispers that Weinstein was mistreating women were in fact “the biggest mess of all.”
While The Weinstein Co. co-founder publicly championed women’s rights, his accusers say that he was a hypocrite, secretly propositioning them for massages, kisses and more. One month after Weinstein distributed “The Hunting Ground,” a documentary about rapes on university campuses, he allegedly groped a college-aged woman in his office. Weinstein, 65, has a well-documented, on-the-record history of unflattering behavior, even against women (like in 2002, when he publicly berated director Julie Taymor at a screening of her film,...

As part of my post duty orders here at We Are Movie Geeks I am tasked with reviewing movies on DVD and Blu ray that may not have found an audience. Movies with little or no theatrical release, did not play very long, escaped attention, what have you.
I am proud to direct your attention to a little known film from 2011 called The Moth Diaries. First I have to say that I, like many millions of movie goers, reveled in the new screen incarnation of Wonder Woman, not only starring Gal Gadot as the original female super hero and masterfully directed by a woman, Patty Jenkins, and also starring Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen and a whole crew of the most righteous Amazons ever seen on a movie screen, wonderful!

So, wise reader, you may have heard of the passing of this giant in the world of cartooning, and are now wondering what he has to do with the world of motion pictures. Well, Mr. Davis did have one screen credit, which we’ll discuss in a bit. No, more importantly John Burton “Jack” Davis, Jr. has added to the fun, or to use an old term “ballyhoo”, of promoting movies for well over fifty years. It’s difficult not to think of his work when recalling so many classic films.
First, a little bio background. He was born on December 2, 1924 in Atlanta Georgia. After graduating from the University of Georgia, Jack landed several cartooning gigs including a stint with the newspaper comic strip based ion the classic character “The Saint”. Then in 1950 he joined the staff of the legendary comics publishing company Entertaining Comics (EC). Jack produced amazing art...

The landscape, electrical and septic work went off without a hitch, but a neighbor took umbrage when a surveyor was seen taking measurements for a fence the family intended to have installed. Mr. Khosla,
I read your piece “The Case Against Dan Didio.”
I’m rarely impressed, but you wrote an impressive article. The attention to detail, footnotes, research and overall thoughtfulness you put into making your case was indeed extraordinary.
I’m a bit taken aback by your use of my article as the motivation to write yours. My article why are we still complaining about Dan Didio had little written about Mr. Didio. It certainly wasn’t a defense of his work nor a damning of it. He and others mentioned were only used to illustrate my outlook.
Much of what you wrote regarding my views and work can do with a bit of clarity. I fear what you’ve constructed in your narrative is somewhat unbalanced and frankly unfair.
For example, placing quotes around a word when no one is speaking gives the distinct impression you don’t believe,...

Though high-speed, higher-stakes car chases of the variety we find opening Miles Ahead are not hard to come by in modern cinema, there’s something remarkably enchanting about watching one featuring the most influential jazz musician in American history riding shotgun.
The verve may not hit all at once. Any experienced biopic viewer may assume the set piece in question could turn out to be little more than an energized track in the “greatest hits album” format that’s standard across the genre. Quickly enough, however, we begin to understand just how much of its time and attention Miles Ahead has chosen to devote to this particularly eccentric episode in Miles Davis’ storied life.
Serving as the movie’s principal through line, the story follows the aging musician and his conditionally witting partner-in-crime, Rolling Stone writer and relative stranger Dave Brill, on a nothing-to-lose attempt to retrieve Davis’ unheard and...

Experiment This: Almereyda Revisits Classic Social Psych Progenitor
American filmmaker Michael Almereyda brings to the screen a pseudo-biopic on one of the more famous social psychologists, Stanley Milgram, whose name should, at the very least, rumble through the memory bank of anyone who has ever taken a Psychology course. But Experimenter, much like academia, is concerned mostly with Milgram’s famed early 1960s obedience experiments, which yielded disturbing results about easily conditioned human beings that society at large was not quite ready to accept, leading to Milgram being treated as something of a pariah within his own academic community. Filmed with a desaturated palette and utilizing props and set backdrops to inflect rather than convey period, Almereyda’s created a cold, clinical portrait of a man whose own familial background informed his timely social experiment, one that’s been referenced and recreated as a tenet of understanding unnerving truths as concerns human behavior.

It’s a question that has been on many a fan’s mind. Well, several. Well, mostly Warwick’s to be honest: will the man who played Wicket in Return Of The Jedi and the Ewok spin-off films before appearing in The Phantom Menace in a variety of roles show up in Star Wars: Episode VII? Now, thanks to Mr. Davis himself, we know the answer via his Twitter feed and a new video.Of course, we don’t yet know who or what he’ll be playing in the new film – the video doesn’t specify and J.J. Abrams would probably lock him in the Nockmaar dungeons if he did – but it feels like the director is continuing to pay homage to the original trilogy, with lots of practical effects and, of course, a batch of Davis’ old castmates including Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker.

Note: if you saw Leprechaun's Revenge on Syfy earlier this year then you've already seen Red Clover. It just has a new title and some decent gore tossed back in.
The Syfy Channel churns out so many low-budget movies that it's really easy to lose track of them all -- and it's particularly difficult to recall the titles of the ones that aren't 100% disposable junkpiles suitable only for late-night inebriated visitations. Budget is the key problem with most of the Syfy movie fare, but sometimes (no, frequently) a low budget is what inspires fun-loving filmmakers to get a little more creative. Second-time filmmaker Shola Lynch, having just finished her first project about Brooklyn-based Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm's 1972 presidential bid, did not want to make her next film about "another black woman." But political activist Angela Davis was simply too rich of a subject for Lynch to pass up. After acquiring an exclusive contract that allowed Lynch access to Mr. Davis's story and the people in Angela's life, the process of constructing a second feature-length documentary was underway. "Free Angela and All Political Prisoners" took Lynch eight years to complete, but what came out of that long process is an emotional, political crime drama "with a love story at the center," a story that offers a detailed look into Angela Davis's life as a political activist and the activities that lead to her 1971 court case. Through rare verité footage, exclusive photographs, and never-before-seen courtroom sketches, Lynch weaves a narrative out of Angela's.

Even her feet are bare – maroon nail varnish excepted. It is a sunny day – warm upstairs at the Jerwood rehearsal space in south London – and we have two reasons to meet. She is about to star in Strange Interlude at the National, a Eugene O'Neill marathon. And the final episode of Channel 4's Shameless (now in its 11th series) is about to be aired, featuring Fiona – peroxide hair and tarty Gypsy earrings to the fore – taking a last stand. Anne-Marie's range is incredible: Elizabeth I,...

Read the entire lawsuit here. The plaintiff Jerry Davis alleges in a lawsuit filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court that the Fox Sports Corporate Group currently employs 34 executives above the VP level – and not one of them is black. “Indeed, to the best of Mr. Davis’s knowledge, no Black person has ever held any position at or above vice president in that division’s entire 19-year existence. Representation of Black individuals in leadership positions in other sports divisions at Fox is, and always has been, similarly abysmal. During the course of its existence, Fox Sports, through its various divisions and entities, has intentionally maintained a practice of directly and indirectly favoring the hiring and/or promotion of non-Black and non-minority employees at senior levels without any legitimate reason. Mr. Davis is a direct victim of this discriminatory practice.” Davis’ lawsuit describes himself as a 52-year-old African-American man, Berkeley grad,...

James McAvoy and Anne-Marie Duff are Britain's new golden acting couple, tackling everything from classical theatres to action movies. But they are reluctant stars who are happy to live out of the limelight
Standards have been set when it comes to golden couples of stage and screen. Half a century ago, when Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton met on the set of Cleopatra, then the most expensive movie ever made, the powerful personal chemistry was immediately clear. In consequence, the love of the two British-born stars is now almost as fabled as the story of Antony and Cleopatra itself.
Since the 1960s there have been occasional challenges, one from Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson, perhaps, for the title of Britain's premiere theatrical partners. But quietly, even reluctantly, since they do not desire it, a talented new pairing has staked a claim: Anne-Marie Duff and her husband James McAvoy.

She's won more Baftas than any other actress. Here, Julie Walters tells Euan Ferguson about her hippy years, life in the country and why it's never been a better time to be a woman on TV
Other multiple Bafta- and Emmy-winning actresses might have flung toys from the pram, or at least raised a manicured eyebrow. The restaurant at the photo studio had courteously but undeniably told her they'd run out of basically everything she might have wanted. Julie Walters smiled and forgave, and smiled again, and pretended to enjoy choosing the remaining dreadful rabbit-food option. Then, out of the waiter's sight, laughed like a drain when I suggested she'd have had better luck choosing from the other (blank) side of the menu; then turned down my offer of a cup of coffee instead because, "No, I'd talk you to death if I had a cup of coffee."

Fairly Legal is back tonight at 9 pm on USA. Esai Morales guest stars in the season premiere and will be appearing in several more episodes. Other BSG and Caprica folks appearing on the show this season include Michael Hogan, Ben Cotton and Zak Santiago. And yeah, Michael Trucco is still a regular.
The Voice of TV has some recent Bts pics, and Buddy TV talked to Esai (more at the link):
What do we need to know about Esai Morales' character?
Esai Morales: I'm playing Aaron Davidson, thank you. No hablo espanol in this show... I am a politician, District Attorney. I am, I guess, a bit of a quintessential slimeball. Sleazebag is how I've been described,...

It’s the “Psycho” of the 1980s! I came in to this movie expecting it to be mediocre but was pleasantly surprised that it was good. This Canadian horror film has multiple overtones of Hitchcock’s “Psycho”: a creepy house with a person running this bed and breakfast not being “all there” in the head. This was released on VHS by Paragon Video and is in demand with movie collectors. It was released on DVD in 2007.
The plot is Heather goes on school vacation to her Grandmother’s recently renovated Bed-n-Breakfast to help out. We learn that Maude Chalmers’ husband disappeared and she converted his funeral home for guests to stay. Mrs. Chalmers has a man named Billy, who is mentally slow, as a ground worker. This creepy ex-funeral home isn’t so peaceful when bodies turn up dead with no just cause. The...

To watch four hours of the so-called documentary on the eight years of the Clinton presidency gave me the sensation of a report about a glass of water that is 75 percent full and 25 percent empty. The PBS presentation, I am guessing, spent 75 percent of the four hours reporting on 25 percent of the story, i.e., the issue of "scandal" in the Clinton presidency, omitting the substance and policy achievements of the Clinton presidency, i.e., issues that affected the lives of most Americans and that they care about most.
But the problem with the presentation wasn't just my view of disproportional emphasis on the "scandals" versus the substance. It was about accuracy. The writers and producers simply got it wrong. They failed to report the fact that every single "scandal" that so preoccupied the media, the punditry and partisan Republicans over the eight years -- save for the final one,...

Chicago – HBO brings back a few of their most larger-than-life personalities with the third (and final) season premiere of “Eastbound & Down” and the stateside premiere of “Life’s Too Short.” Danny McBride/Kenny Powers should be familiar to anyone with an HBO subscription by now and the super-talented pair that made HBO’s “Extras” — Stephen Merchant & Ricky Gervais — are behind another bout of awkward comedy with A-list guest stars. Both shows are flawed but damn funny. You could do worse on a Sunday night.
TV Rating: 3.5/5.0
On paper, HBO’s “Eastbound & Down” and “Life’s Too Short” may not seem to have much in common and yet they are perfectly paired on Sunday nights not only by virtue of being unlike anything else on TV but also on a critical level. “Eastbound,” which is starting its third and final season, has been better in the past but still shows signs of that first-season greatness.

Once more, I’m Not Michael Davis and I’m getting pretty tired of people thinking I am.
Allow me to explain…
Some years back I received a call from news outlets asking for my response to Tom Cruise’s winning of a lawsuit.
For those of you who may not know this, I’m the last person who gives a darn about what any celebrity does. Unless I know the celebrity personally and I know quite a few, I just don’t care and it’s not worth my time. If it happens to be someone I know I still don’t give a hoot unless it’s wonderful or horrible news.
Wonderful, like Wayne Brady being nominated for an Oscar or horrible like Bill Duke voting for Herman Cain. That sort of thing I...

One Tree Hill Season 9 – Sophia Bush Daddy Revealed
It’s been a long time coming, but we’re finally going to meet Brooke Davis’ (Sophia Bush) dad in One Tree Hill’s ninth and final season. This is pretty significant when you take in to account this man had been heard of but not seen for eight years. He brings a whole new meaning to “Daddy wasn’t there.”
So whom is the lucky actor playing Mr. Davis? Well, it’s Richard Burgi of course. No, not of course? Burgi should be recognizable to anyone who’s watched Desperate Housewives, where he plays Karl Meyer and is all too often seen without a shirt. Seriously, Google “Richard Burgi Desperate Housewives” and you will get so many shirtless images of him. But I digress. Burgi’s role on One Tree Hill will be recurring, so he’ll get to make up...

Jane Carter Woodrow writes: I had the good fortune to meet John Howard Davies (obituary, 25 August) in the early 90s when he was head of entertainment at Thames and I was a new comedy writer. He commissioned and encouraged me, as I believe he did other young writers at the time, and displayed a faith in my abilities that assisted me even in my later career. I owe a lot to John, a kind, decent and talented man.

From RapFix:
It’s Gucci time — well not quite yet. With the hip-hop world anticipating the release of Georgia rapper Gucci Mane from prison there have been numerous rumors and false reports.
Over the weekend various Internet media outlets were reporting that the “So Icey” rapper was released from Fulton County Jail, where he’s spent the last three months serving for a probation violation, but RapFix learned that was not the case.
Gucci was expected to be released yesterday, according to his lawyer Ashutosh Joshi, but it seems that “procedural holdups” prevented that from happening. MTV News also learned that there is currently a hold on Gucci’s release and a possibility that once he is freed from Fulton County Jail that he would be sent up to a state prison. The rapper’s lawyer however says that once this issue is resolved Gucc will be free man.
