Nityananda Datta grew up in Chittagong, Bangladesh. During his childhood, he
actively participated in social activities, such as
music, art, drama, dance, and he directed and choreographed a dance drama
during the era of the language movement in Bangladesh. He joined
Satyajat Ray as a chief assistant director in many films. Then he
directed his own four films in Calcutta and then relocated to Bombay in
1969 and worked with Hrishikesh Mukhergee as an associate director for
many films. During that time, he also produced and directed under his
own ND productions many documentaries awarded by the film divisions of
the government of India. He was awarded four national awards for his
directions, and screenplays. He came to USA and was invited to work for
the Cal state university as a director of their audio visual
department.
