The headline was clear, concise and damning: “Harvey Weinstein Paid Off Sexual Harassment Accusers for Decades.” The story, written by New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor and published on Oct. 5, 2017, detailed how the powerful producer and Miramax co-founder swatted away allegations of sexual assault and harassment for decades. They spoke to his former assistants, prominent actresses and other film industry people to figure out the constellation of lawyers, employees and advisors who protected the Hollywood mogul. Twohey and Kantor’s reporting not only aided Weinstein survivors seeking redress; it also helped ignite a percolating movement.
Maria Schrader’s She Said dramatizes Twohey and Kantor’s investigative process, sensitively portraying the lengths the reporters went to in order to expose one of the most harrowing cases of workplace abuse, power and coercion in memory. (I was an employee at the Times...

War Machine is a biting satire about the U.S. war in Afghanistan. It's a voyage into the absurd that encapsulates the insanity of never ending armed conflict. Adapted from the highly acclaimed novel, The Operators by Michael Hastings, War Machine is the tale of four star General Glenn McMahon. The character is based on General Stanley McChrystal, whose arrogance and hubris led to an epic downfall. Director/writer David Michod gets top marks for humor and stark realism. War is hell. The film takes aim in a comedic way, but never loses sight of the brutality.
In April of 2010, President Barack Obama was making a beeline out of Iraq; with the war in Afghanistan devolving after years of quagmire. Insert the hardline, true believer, military man to the bone, General Glen McMahon (Brad Pitt). The Special Forces leader in Iraq, and an expert in counter insurgency tactics, McMahon is...

David Michôd’s War Machine marks Netflix’s second assessment of America’s Middle Eastern strategies in barely a month. Fernando Coimbra’s Sand Castle questioned Iraq-war involvement, and now – weeks later – attention is diverted to Afghanistan, 2009. It’s all based on Michael Hastings’ non-fiction “The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan,” an exposé that “questions” General Stanley McChrystal’s 2010 shot-calling. The names may have changed from page to screen, but the message is retained. When invading a foreign land, how is one supposed to broker peace? It’s a confused tactic; one that blurs the rules of war. Good thing a colorful cast of jarheads are there to “make sense” of it all.
Brad Pitt stars as General Glen McMahon, the 4-star legend whose duty is to declare a victorious end to Afghanistan’s ongoing retaliations. Shouldn’t be too hard since the “Glenimal” (yes,...

Sable & Batalion’s The Legend of Beaver Dam has been playing some of the premiere film festivals since September. It played Tiff, Fantastic Fest, Stiges and just recently played at Sundance 2011. I received a screener prior to Fantastic Fest – thank god because I missed it on the big screen because of my schedule – and I fell in love with it. The short film takes the familiar story of an urban legend being told at a campfire setting. However, the end result of this fantastic short film is anything short of predictable. Blood and the piercing screams of horror & rock are just some things you can find in this 10 minute blessing. Today, I bring you the long delayed interview with the director, Jerome Sable.
You can read my review of the short film here shortly. I was very excited to get to interview Jerome at Fantastic Fest. Then I got the...

One of our favorite short films of the year, The Legend of Beaver Dam (review here), is poised to make a splash at this year's Sundance Film Festival screening ahead of the highly anticipated Hobo with a Shotgun in the "Park City at Midnight" lineup, and we've got all the info for ya!
The short tells the story of Danny Zigwitz, a nerdy youngster who needs to save his fellow campers from a bloody massacre when a campfire ghost story comes to life. Little kids, an evil monster, a gory fight to the death in the woods — and it's a rock musical.
It has already won several awards, including "Best Horror Short Film" at Fantastic Fest and "Best Short Film" at both Screamfest La and Sitges Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya, the number one fantasy/horror fest in the world. Believe us when we say it deserves every damned one of them,...

We all know that all the three seasons of the Canadian TV series Slings and Arrows have been on DVD for quite a while. Now, Acorn Media, a film and TV series distributor, has announced that the complete series will come on High Definition Blu-Ray in North America on October 26.
This dark comedy from The Movie Network, a Canadian premium cable network, talks about a theatre festival.
In the fictional town of New Burbage, legendary theatrical madman Geoffrey Tennant (Paul Gross) returns to the New Burbage Theatre Festival, the site of his greatest triumph and most humiliating failure, to assume the artistic directorship after the sudden death of his mentor, Oliver Welles (Stephen Ouimette). When Geoffrey arrives he finds that Oliver is still there, in spirit anyway, and with his guidance (and often in spite of it) Geoffrey attempts to reconcile with his past while wrestling the festival back from the marketing department.

When a ghost story around the campfire awakens an evil monster, it's up to nerdy Danny Zigwitz to be the hero and save his fellow campers from a bloody massacre. Crank up the volume and get ready to scream along to this musical gore-fest in the woods. Heads will rock'n'roll!
Canadian comedian Sean Cullen stars in this one but, from the looks of things, he doesn't star for long. Wear a poncho, it's gonna get slick!

"Wow, this is such a surprise. Mainly because I'm a comedian and, as everybody knows, comedy is not acting. Comedy is very easy. Anybody can do it. All you need to do is not try very hard, make fun of real acting, and boom: comedy. I'd like to thank my mom because she told me I'd never amount to anything. I'd like to thank my dad because he was an alcoholic and he gave me my motivation to get into show business. I'd like to thank my agent because he's in the audience and he'll never get me another job if I don't.
