In the wake of studio failures, it is unknown if Sony will greenlight Marvel Comics’ ‘Spider-Man’ spin-off "El Muerto! (The Aztec Zombie)”, to be directed by Jonás Cuarón, showcasing the ‘super’ wrestler ‘Luchador Juan Carlos Sanchez':
"... the powers of the super powered wrestler 'el Muerto', including endurance and rapid healing, have been passed down generation to generation. Each wrestler had to prove themselves to their oppressor, 'el Dorado', so that they could remain alive and keep their powers.
When 'Marcus Estrada' presented his son 'Juan Carlo's to 'el Dorado', Juan Carlos cowered in terror, unwilling to fight him. Marcus Estrada sacrificed his life to try and save Juan Carlos.
"Out of respect for his father's courage, el Dorado granted Juan Carlos ten years to travel and to become brave, and then to duel a masked wrestler and unmask him.

Sandra Bullock almost had to bear the burden of an Oscar-nominated film on her shoulders despite her co-star being super supportive of her. George Clooney had very few shots in Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity compared to Bullock. The filming carried the gravitas of the film and was very hard on Bullock, who was hanging from a scaffolding with 12 wires.

The Blind Side actress wasn’t happy to be at the forefront of the movie during promotions. She felt the stress of the press putting the responsibility for the film’s success entirely on her. However, she asserted in an interview that she was only an actor in the film written and produced by someone else.

There was a time when everything wasn’t hunky dory for him. Things were going as wrong for him as they could at once. And then Gravity happened. But Cuarón reveals that at one moment, the Sandra Bullock-starrer almost didn’t happen.

'El Muerto' is reportedly back in development without Bad Bunny.Sony is said to have quietly resumed work on the upcoming comic book blockbuster - which follows the story of a superman luchador - but the musician and occasional WWE superstar won't be playing the masked wrestling hero.As reported by Variety, script revisions and Bad Bunny's tour dates mean the movie is in development without its former leading man. There had been delays due to the writers and actors strikes in Hollywood, which meant the film lost its place in the release calendar.Last year, Bunny - whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio - was asked about the status of the film, and described the situation as "delicate" to Vanity Fair.He added: "I don't know what to say."A publicist later told the outlet he was no longer on board with the project.

It might be hard to believe that the director of a Harry Potter movie and Children of Men would be hard up for money, but that’s just the situation Alfonso Cuarón found himself in ahead of his next film, Gravity. Now, 10 years and just one movie on, the filmmaker is remembering how the screenplay came about just in time.
Speaking with Empire for a piece commemorating the 10th anniversary of Gravity, Cuarón remembered having to tell his son, Jonás, that the movie they had been collaborating on wasn’t going to be made and the clock was ticking for the team to deliver a script. “I was broke…and I really needed to put together something in order to pretty much survive.”
But it was just that sort of feeling of being lost that helped Cuarón and his son get the layout for Gravity down. “I said, ‘I’m feeling,...

Even as Sony looks to the likes of Kraven The Hunter as the future of its Spider-Man-based spin-off universe, it is having to pump the brakes on others. The studio has announced it is taking the Bad Bunny-starring El Muerto off its release schedule.
The reason? Chalk up another film impacted by the ongoing writers' strike, plus complications from its musician star's touring schedule.
El Muerto debuted in a 2006 issue of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, written by Peter David, and illustrated by Roger Cruz. The character, real name Juan Carlos, was a super powered wrestler who originally fought Spider-Man in a charity wrestling where he nearly unmasked the hero before being stung by Spider-Man, with a paralyzing poison. After being saved from the hospital by the web-spinner when Muerto’s oppressor El Dorado came to claim the wrestler’s life, the two would team up to defeat Dorado.

Sony has removed “El Muerto,” a Marvel movie about a luchador supervillain starring Bad Bunny, from its theatrical-release calendar. The “Spider-Man” baddie’s standalone film was previously scheduled for January 12, 2024; now, per Sony, it’s “Tbd.”
An individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire that “El Muerto” is still in development, but with the writers strike ongoing and the musician’s tour dates, rescheduling the release is complicated. “El Muerto” isn’t the first superhero movie to be impacted by the WGA strike, but there are enough challenges here to wonder if “El Muerto” will be re-slotted, or if it’s down for the count.
This morning, Sony emailed press with three updates to its domestic release calendar:
Seth Rogen’s “Dumb Money” has been moved up from October 20, 2023 to September 22, 2023. “The Book of Clarence” is being pushed back from that September 22 date to January 12, 2024. The “El Muerto” release date is now considered “Tbd.

The studio is pulling the Spider-Man Universe movie from its release schedule, painting a grim picture of what is supposed to be the first live-action Marvel film led by a Latino character. El Muerto, the Spider-Man spinoff starring Bad Bunny, is well, muerto. At least for the time being.

Bad Bunny-headlined Spider-Man spinoff El Muerto seemingly just locked in its shooting start date.
El Muerto will apparently kick off principal photography in Los Angeles on Aug. 7, according to the production's listing on film and TV industry website productionlist.com. It's currently unclear how long filming is expected to last, nor is it known whether El Muerto will undertake any other location shooting outside L.A. Also worth noting is that Sony is yet to officially confirm El Muerto's filming window, which means this information should be taken with a grain of salt for now.

We've seen Scarlett Johansson in many great roles, but there are a couple she missed out on in years past. Recently, Johansson said how she had auditioned but been passed over for roles in Iron Man 2 and Gravity, respectively to Emily Blunt and Sandra Bullock. In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight to promote her upcoming film Asteroid City, Johansson shed some new light on her Gravity audition, recalling how it was basically nothing more than sitting on a chair in a space suit and pretending as if there were no gravity.
"I did a screen test for the movie Gravity, that Sandra Bullock is fantastic in, but I had to be in like the full whole space suit thing, and sort of pretend I was kind of like floating in space... even though I was just sitting in a chair with a helmet on," as Johansson remembered.

It has to be tempting for Lionsgate’s ‘”John Wick: Chapter 4,” Amazon’s “Air,” and Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” to accelerate their PVOD releases: The home market is dying for something new to watch.
After 60 days in theaters, Disney released “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” today and it immediately went to #1 at iTunes; expect other charts to follow suit. For now, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney) repeated as #1 at Vudu and Fandango for a third week, with recent releases “65” (Sony), “Creed III” (MGM), and “Shazam: The Way of Water” (Warner Bros. Discovery) rotating second through fourth spots on all three charts, all at $19.99. The only new title is “The Jesus Revolution” (Lionsgate), for sale at $19.99.
Lionsgate release windows follow no set pattern. “Jesus” had seven weekends in theaters before home release, but “John Wick 4” was offered for pre-sale to great success parallel to its March 24 theatrical debut.

It’s like a Mexican E.T. featuring a mythical dog-thing with wings. Charming kids’ movie Chupa, directed by Gravity writer Jonás Cuarón, is the story of a young boy called Alejandro (Evan Whitten) whose father has died, who travels to Mexico to stay with his grandfather (Demián Bichir) and cousins and befriends a strange creature.
This creature is a baby chupacabra who’s been separated from its parents and has taken refuge in Alex’s grandfather’s barn. But all is not well – Christian Slater’s government funded scientist has been tracking the chupacabras, believing they have healing qualities that he’d be able to harness.
Will Alex be able to help reunite little Chupa with his family before the ruthless scientist gets his hands on him? And might he learn some lessons about family on the way? You’ll have to watch the film to find out.

Netflix always seems to know when it has a potential hit. Although the action-comedy sequel “Murder Mystery 2,” starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, was probably a no-brainer, the continuing success of the spy thriller series “The Night Agent” certainly must be a nice surprise. Read on for the Netflix Top 10 (Week of April 3) viewing chart analysis.
Last week, Season 1 of “The Night Agent” spent its third weekend as the #1 English language series on the streamer with 130.5 million global hours viewed, which was enough to put it into Netflix’s all-time most popular English shows in ninth place with 515.6 million total hours viewed worldwide. The show is in the top 10 in 92 countries, many of which it remains in the #1 spot. Wisely, Netflix has already greenlit a second season.

Jonás Cuarón's Netflix film Chupa was filmed in various locations. The film follows a 13-year-old boy named Alex visiting his extended family in Mexico after his father's death. His time there sees him cross paths with the infamous folklore monster, the Chupacabra, a development which serves as the basis of the movie's story.
The folklore connections of the Chupacabra are inherently important to the Netflix movie. The mythological creature the animal in the movie shares its name is deeply rooted in Latin American culture, hence why Chupa is set primarily in Mexico. Thanks to the bond formed between the legendary beast and the main character, Chupa was able to take viewers on an eventful and dangerous journey through Mexico.

“65” (Sony) and “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” (Warner Bros. Discovery), both $19.99, were the sole new entries on VOD charts on an otherwise static week. However, three’s a trend: The new titles join last week’s “Creed III” in arriving on PVOD in 28 days or fewer after their theatrical releases.
As home-release strategies evolve, it’s clear that distributors love that lucrative PVOD revenue. At the same time, these charts reinforce the idea that playing in theaters elevates these titles.
“65” was a modest theatrical performer ($31 million in 31 days), but with its sci-fi genre and Adam Driver as the lead it can draw early home viewers. And since Sony doesn’t own a streamer, it has more incentive to maximize VOD.
“Shazam” sequel after 21 days is atypical for Wbd, especially for a DC title. After Wbd ended its disruptive same-day theatrical/HBO Max strategy, the studio said any theatrical...

One of Sony's upcoming Spider-Man spin-off movies for 2024, El Muerto, gets a disappointing update. In April 2022, a surprising Spider-Man spin-off film was revealed to be in the works. Based on an incredibly obscure Spider-Man character, Bad Bunny was cast as the lead in El Muerto. The character has only appeared in two issues of Marvel Comics but is now headed for the big screen.
However, it appears the El Muerto movie may be facing some setbacks. Bad Bunny recently did an interview with Time in which El Muerto was briefly discussed. With a January 2024 release date set, the actor revealed that filming has actually not started. Bad Bunny's publicist clarified later on that El Muerto was "at a standstill" and that it remains in development. A Sony representative declined to comment on the situation.

The primary purpose of this roundup is to highlight films new to streaming platforms that could potentially contend for awards. But some weekends there are no new releases that could credibly be considered awards contenders. This is one of those weeks. But we don’t take the week off. Instead, we highlight the best of what’s new on streaming, whether it’s a contender or not. This week’s picks include a notable new release and three older Oscar contenders.
The contender to watch this week: “Fatal Attraction”
Before the Paramount+ adaptation starring Lizzy Caplan and Joshua Jackson premieres at the end of April, revisit this classic for a dose of bunny-boiling electricity. “Fatal Attraction” was the third-highest-grossing release of 1987, eventually earning six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. People have been arguing about the movie’s messages ever since, but it’s hard to find performances as invigorating as...

Ready to fall in love with a cuddly little Chupacabra? Because you will if you watch Netflix’s new film “Chupa.”
“Chupa” stars Evan Whitten as Alex, a kid living in the United States whose mom sends him to visit his grandfather (Demián Bichir) in Mexico for spring break. (This is in the early 1990s.) While in Mexico, he befriends a Chupacabra – an ancient creature from Mexican folklore, who he dubs Chupa. Together, he and his cousins hide Chupa and outwit a nefarious operative trying to capture the creature for use in the biomedical field and attempt to return Chupa to his family.
It’s a terrific little movie, clearly indebted to the Amblin movies of the 1980s and early 1990s, with some fun performances and an absolutely adorable creature in Chupa.

Chupa is a Netflix movie directed by Jonás Cuarón starring Evan Whitten and Demian Bichir.
The chupacabra is a legend about an animal that feeds on the blood of goats. Coming all the way from Mexico, the story has become a classic horror story.
This time, Jonás Cuarón gives the story a more youthful twist and turns it into a heartwarming tale of friendship and adventure in the style of the 80’s and those charming and forgettable films that followed in the wake of E.T.
It’s fun to see Christian Slater again.

“Chupa” is a Netflix movie directed by Jonas Cuaron and released on April 7, 2023. Jonas Cuaron is the son of Alfonso Cuaron, a Mexican filmmaker who has won Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Cinematography Oscars. “Chupa” is a heartwarming tale of Alejandro, aka Alex (Evan Whitten), who is going through grief because of the death of his father, who died of cancer, and Chupa, or the mythical creature Chupacabra, who, due to the fault of man, has been displaced from his family. Alex lives in Kansas City and studies at Lakewood Middle School, where he doesn’t interact with any of his classmates but engages himself in playing a game on the Game Boy, for which he is called weird and teased with words like ‘Taquito.’ Alex feels out of place and isn’t able to brave this situation at school. Jonás Cuarón creates a family adventure film based on Latin America’s folklore about a mythical creature. It’s very “Amblin-esque” according to him. So why make a movie about Chupacabras, why make it a family adventure, and really, why call it “Chupa?” The word has a different connotation in both the Latin and Filipino culture.

According to legend, the chupacabra is a fearsome, blood-sucking beast — a lean and intimidating animal you wouldn’t want to come across feasting on your livestock at night. Not so the cub three kids nickname “Chupa” in Mexican director Jonás Cuarón’s family-friendly Netflix movie. This one looks like a fuzzy-wuzzy baby lynx, with inquisitive amber eyes and a pair of awkward azure wings it still hasn’t learned how to use. A single glimpse of this oversized kitten and you’ll want one for your own, if not the plush version to snuggle up with at night.
That’s a pretty radical reimagining of a mythical monster usually discussed in horror terms, but an inspired way to bring a sense of Amblin-esque wonder south of the border, attempting to do for a legendary Latin American creature what films like “E.T.” did for extra-terrestrials — which is to say, turn...

Netflix did not think things through when it chose the title for Chupa, but that mistake actually exposes a larger platform problem. The Netflix film follows a young boy who befriends a chupacabra. The animal is a folklore legend reportedly seen in Puerto Rico, but the film takes place in Mexico, where the young boy, Alex, finds the animal in his grandfather's shed. Unfortunately, Netflix shortening the film's name to Chupa was a terrible idea because it has an inappropriate meaning. The animal is typically known for sucking the blood out of livestock like goats - a major problem for farmers.
The chupacabra gets its name from the Spanish words chupar, meaning "to suck," and cabra, which means goat. Unfortunately, chupar on its own can be confused for a sexual act, which does not work well with the theme of Netflix movie Chupa, especially because it is rated PG and aimed at children.

Spanish-speaking viewers have pointed out an unfortunate translation issue with Netflix’s new family adventure film, Chupa.
The film, which is set to be released by the streaming service on 7 April, is about a mysterious chupacabra – inspired by a mythical creature in South American folklore that sucked the blood of goats. It was written and directed by Jonás Cuarón, son of Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón.

The trailer actually addresses the word’s meaning, with one character pointing out that Alex’s nickname for the chupacabra means “sucker”, suggesting it could be interpreted as “bad”. Alex’s dad says he likes the nickname.

Director Jonás Cuarón reimagines the terrifying mythical beast as a cute and furry little creature in Netflix’s Chupa. The two-minute trailer for the family-friendly adventure confirms this incredibly adorable baby chupacabra looks nothing like a goat-killing, nightmare-inducing monster.
“I was a small kid when the legend started. When the idea came of turning [the myth] on its head and using it to tell a family adventure, I was immediately excited,” said Cuarón in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “I’ve always been a huge fan of E.T. and believe that stories like that are so powerful because they play on the idea of kids being misunderstood by adults. Chupa might be a monster but he’s the only one that truly understands what Alex is going through. The bond between a boy and a creature is so pure, like with a pet, it transcends language.”

Bad Bunny, aka El Conejo Malo, took to the 2023 Grammys stage on Sunday night, where his Un Verano Sin Ti made history as the first Latin album to be nominated for album of the year. The release was 2022’s most-listened-to album.
The artist opened the show with a Un Verano Sin Ti mashup of tracks “El Apagon” and “Despues de la Playa,” with a brass section and conga drummers. The musician danced through the tables on the floor, before making his way to a circular, lit stage in at the front of the room.
The artist, whose full name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has taken home two Grammys in the past: one for best música urbana album for El Último Tour Del Mundo and his first one for best Latin pop or urban album for Yhlqmdlg.

Based on a true story, “Cassandro” is the best possible vehicle for its star Gael García Bernal, who gives an extraordinarily physical performance as Saúl Armendáriz, a scrappy gay outsider who enters the strange world of Mexican Lucha Libre wrestling.
In the first scenes, where we see Armendáriz competing under the name El Topo, director Roger Ross Williams — the documentarian behind “The Apollo” and “God Loves Uganda” making his fiction-film debut here — confidently and swiftly sketches in a milieu in which homoeroticism and fear of homosexuality are in some peculiar kind of headlock with each other.
Armendáriz takes taunts from hulking wrestlers backstage and dishes them right back, and out in the ring his preordained defeat at the hands of his brawny opponent is so sexually charged that the homoeroticism isn’t subtext; it is practically text. “El Topo bites the pillow!” his opponent cries, and the crowd roars its approval.

Antonio Banderas famously portrayed the masked vigilante in 1998’s film The Mask of Zorro and its 2005 follow-up The Legend of Zorro. Banderas recently opened up about being game for a third installment of the franchise and who he would like to pass on the torch to play the titular character.
“Yes, I would, I would consider that possibility, why not?” Banderas told ComicBook of starring in a third film. “Yeah, I think today, I said something like that to somebody. They asked me about Zorro. If they called me to do Zorro, I would do what Anthony Hopkins did for me, which is to pass the torch.”
Banderas said that he would like to see his Uncharted costar Tom Holland behind the mask.
“I did Uncharted with him, and he’s so energetic and fun, and he’s got this spark too,” Banderas said. “Why not?”
