Film Movement has acquired Dutch genre festival films The Columnist and Tailgate and plans 2021 US theatrical releases for both.

Darkly comedic revenge story The Columnist starring Katja Herbers and played in official selection at Montreal’s Fantasia Fest and London’s FrightFest.

Herbers plays a journalist besieged by trolls who decides to strike back. Ivo van Aart directed from a screenplay by Daan Windhoorst.

The film is being sold at AFM Online by Montreal-based Attraction.

Dutch road-rage thriller Tailgate has snagged a US buyer at the start of AFM Online.

The film is to be released in the States by Film Movement in a deal announced by Montreal-based sales outfit Attraction.

Scripted and directed by Lodewijk Crijns, Tailgate (aka Bumperkleef) was produced by Topkapi Films in the Netherlands in co-production with Belgian outfit Savage Film.

It was released locally in 2019 becoming a popular and critical success, with the Dutch film critics’ circle voting it Dutch film of the year.

Genre festival to open with ‘Train To Busan Presents: Peninsula’.

South Korean zombie thriller Train To Busan Presents: Peninsula will open UK genre festival FrightFest on October 22 ahead of its UK release by Studiocanal on November 6.

The festival will host 34 features in central London from October 22-25 and has secured seven world premieres and two European premieres.

It will close with the world premiere of US horror Held, directed by Chris Lofing and Travis Cluff, the filmmaking duo behind The Gallows franchise.

‘Tailgate’ set to be screened at Cannes’ Marché du Film Online.

Montreal-based sales agent Attraction Distribution has closed deals across Europe and Asia on Dutch road-rage thriller Tailgate.

The film, which Attraction will screen at the Cannes’ Marché du Film Online this week, has sold to the UK (Signature), France (Trade Media), Russia/Cis (Volga), China (Jetsen), Japan (New Select) and South Korea (Challan).

Written and directed by Dutch filmmaker Lodewijk Crijns, the film is produced by Amsterdam-based Topkapi Films and Savage Film, the Belgian production outfit behind Patrick and The Ardennes.

‘Flying Dutchmen’

Amsterdam-based Topkapi Films is to launch one of the most ambitious TV dramas in recent Dutch history, Flying Dutchmen, directed by Joram Lürsen (Public Works, In Orange). Shooting will start at the end of the year.

In an exclusive interview with Screen International, company founder Frans van Gestel has revealed details of the project, which recently received support from the Netherlands Production Incentive. The series consists of eight episodes, each with a budget of €800,000 Euros.

It tells the story of Anthony Fokker, the Dutch aviation pioneer and aircraft manufacturer, and of his very volatile partnership with fellow aviation expert, Albert Plesman.

Fokker became a naturalised German but returned to the Netherlands after the First World War and together with Plesman, began to build up the Dutch aviation industry. The two men took planes built for warfare and customised and re-designed...
