HBO's Celtics City is steadily rising on Max's streaming chart while Celtics fans watch their games. According to the streaming service, the nine-part sports documentary series is garnering rave reviews from fans worldwide. Executive produced by Bill Simmons, American sports analyst and author, and Connor Schell, Celtics City tells the story of the Boston Celtics, the NBA's most storied franchise. It goes into depth about where it all began, from being one of the original teams in the league to its historic championships and rivalries that shaped its identity. Never-before-seen archives and over eight dozen interviews were conducted to complete what Rotten Tomatoes reviewers are calling "a well-produced history for those who fit its target audience."

While the series began streaming on Max on March 3, 2025, it already has a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, with Alan French of Sunshine State Cineplex calling it a "fun ride with plenty of serious discussions.

Red Auerbach played a crucial coaching role in the success of the Celtics franchise, leading them to 11 NBA Championships between 1957 and 1969. Winning Time will not have the opportunity to fully cover the Showtime Lakers dynasty under Pat Riley, as the series concluded after just 17 episodes. Tony Awards nominations were announced on Monday, May 9 by Adrienne Warren and Joshua Henry. While the nominations for the 75th annual Tony Awards were determined by a few dozen theater professionals, winners were decided by upwards of 650 members of the Broadway community.

Updated with full list of nominees: Tony Awards nominations were announced Monday morning, and Strange Loop, Michael R. Jackson’s autobiographical musical starring Jaquel Spivey, took the most nominations with 11, while Mj, the Michael Jackson musical, and Paradise Square each earned 10. Company took nine, The Lehman Trilogy and Six garnered eight, and both for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf and Girl From the North Country took seven.

With six nominations were The Music Man and The Skin of Our Teeth, with Clyde’s, Hangmen and Mr. Saturday Night taking five.

At four nominations were American Buffalo, Flying Over Sunset, Take Me Out, and Trouble in Mind. With three nominations were Caroline, or Change, Dana H., How I Learned to Drive, Macbeth, Potus and Skeleton Crew. Taking single noms were Diana, The Musical, Funny Girl, Lackawanna Blues, The Minutes, Mrs. Doubtfire and Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite.

Two years after its premature pandemic closure, Martin McDonagh’s play “Hangmen” has slipped the proverbial noose and returned to Broadway in a plot twist you might think McDonagh wrote himself. The unexpected resurrection of this dark comedy about the cessation of the death penalty in England in 1965 stars a slightly different cast than it did back in March 2020: David Threlfall has stepped into the shoes of the hangman played by Mark Addy, while Alfie Allen takes over the menacing character Mooney that Dan Stevens once embodied.

These two characters come to loggerheads when they meet in the bar that Threlfall’s Harry runs in his early retirement, while a subsequent kidnapping plot propels both characters to make fateful decisions. Matthew Dunster directs the thriller, which also features original Broadway cast members Tracie Bennett, Gaby French, and many others. “Hangmen” opened at the Golden Theatre on April 21.

The 2022 Outer Critics Circle nominations were announced Tuesday. They honor the best of the 2021-2022 Broadway and Off-Broadway season. “The Lehman Trilogy” scored the most nominations with nine bids, followed closely by the Off-Broadway musicals “Harmony” and “Kimberly Akimbo,” which scored eight nominations apiece.

Special Achievement Awards will be presented to “How I Learned to Drive” stars Johanna Day, David Morse and Mary-Louise Parker, as well as “Lackawanna Blues” star Ruben Santiago-Hudson, to mark their outstanding returns to roles they originated two decades ago. Since these actors were eligible for the original runs of these shows, the Outer Critics Circle has opted to take them out of contention for this year’s awards.

“It’s been a great season for Black playwrights,” Sam Eckmann says as he introduces Gold Derby’s first slugfest of the 2022 Tony Awards season. A whopping 20 new plays and play revivals are eligible this season, with many of those written by, directed by, and starring Black artists. Sam and I met six weeks ahead of the nominations – which will be announced on May 3 – to debate which productions, actors, and directors will make the shortlists. Watch the full video above.

While I have “The Lehman Trilogy” in first place for now since so many of the contenders have not yet even started previews, Sam warns, “You have to go back to 2007 with ‘Coast of Utopia’ to find a play that was closed by the time of the Tony ceremony that won.

The sublime “Sunday” diner scene with the Broadway legends in Netflix’s “Tick Tick Boom” has become even more tear-inducing and meta with the recent passing of Stephen Sondheim, whose “Sunday in the Park with George” musical about French pointillist painter Georges Seurat started it all. First, through Jonathan Larson’s (Andrew Garfield) tribute song, “Sunday,” set in The Moondance Diner in SoHo, where he toils as a waiter and dreams of becoming the next Sondheim. Second, through “Tick Tick Boom” director Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ambitious, even miraculous, staging of the scene in a replica of the ’90s diner on a New York soundstage.

Many plays and musicals have had to wait a long year and a half to open on Broadway, with premieres delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. But none are more overdue than Alice Childress’ “Trouble in Mind.” First staged in 1955, the play never arrived on Broadway until now. After almost seven decades, “Trouble in Mind” opened at the Roundabout Theatre Company’s American Airlines Theatre on Nov. 18.

“Trouble In Mind” centers on the rehearsals of a poorly-written play about lynching in the South penned by a white playwright. Tony Award winner Lachanze stars as Wiletta, an actress in the play who knows how to navigate the racism of show business but is becoming increasingly exasperated doing so, especially as she works with condescending director Al Manners, played by Michael Zegen. Charles Randolph-Wright directs the ensemble cast.

Sixty-four years late and right on time, Alice Childress’ wise and stirring backstage comedy-drama Trouble in Mind is making its long-in-coming Broadway debut tonight, and to describe the play as prescient would be an understatement. Uncanny rings truer.

With a star turn by Lachanze that takes a strong place in a theatrical season already formidable in its roster of performances, Trouble in Mind takes a behind-the-curtain look at the racism, coded prejudice, self-flattery, sexism and built-in bigotry that Broadway has always professed to eschew.

Childress, who died in 1994, knew better, and her insights fuel Trouble in Mind. First staged to acclaim Off Broadway in 1955, the play, about a Black actress in a big Broadway play who must choose between truth and security, was optioned by producers to open on Broadway in 1957 – if only Childress would write a more upbeat and forgiving ending. The Sara Bareilles-produced dramedy “Little Voice” has been canceled by Apple TV+, marking the first original series to get the ax at the tech giant’s streaming service.

Described as a “love letter to the diverse musicality of New York,” “Little Voice” explores “the universal journey of finding your authentic voice in your early 20s.” Along with producing “Little Voice,” Bareilles (“Waitress”) provided original music for the series.

“Little Voice” is a half-hour, coming-of-age drama that stars Brittany O’Grady (“Star”) as a talented young singer and songwriter looking to find her confidence on stage and fulfill her dreams while navigating love, rejection and complicated family issues.

“Little Voice” was Bareilles’ first foray into television (she now stars on Peacock’s recently renewed Tina Fey-created comedy “Girls5Eva”) and marked O’Grady’s return to TV after breaking out in “Star.”

The streamer has officially canceled Sara Bareilles' songwriting drama, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Wednesday.

The sad announcement means Little Voice has become the streamer's first cancellation.

"A love letter to the diverse musicality of New York," is how Apple TV+ described the series ahead of its debut.

The series explored the universal journey of finding your authentic voice in your early 20s.

Bareilles (Waitress) provided original music for this fresh, intensely romantic tale of the search to find your true voice … and then the courage to use it.

Brittany O’Grady led the cast that also included Sean Teale, Colton Ryan, Shalini Bathina, Kevin Valdez, Phillip Johnson Richardson, and Chuck Cooper.

The series was produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

J.J. Abrams, Bareilles, Jessie Nelson, and Ben Stephenson (Westworld) served as executive producers.

News of the cancellation is not surprising.

Exclusive: Stars of Broadway will stage a fundraising concert for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, with plans to stream the event on Oct. 21.

The event, which starts at 8 Pm Et, is organized by the group Broadway for Biden and is called In Our America: A Concert for the Soul of the Nation, with donations going to the Biden Victory Fund.

The next big superstar in music is a fusion of Alessia Cara, Carole King and Betty White: That’s how the protagonist, Bess King, describes herself in Little Voice, a musical drama that premiered Friday on Apple TV+.

It’s a fitting characterization for Bess, portrayed by Brittany O’Grady (Star) as a fresh-faced, 20-something with songwriting chops and a (mostly) charming, wide-eyed innocence. O’Grady’s vocal gifts are bolstered by the music, written by Grammy-nominated hitmaker Sara Bareilles, who executive-produced the show with her Waitress collaborator Jessie Nelson, J.J. Apple TV+ has released the first official trailer for Little Voice, a new original series from J.J. Abrams and the team behind the Broadway musical Waitress, Sara Bareilles and Jessie Nelson.

A half-hour coming-of-age drama series set in New York, Little Voice follows Bess King (Brittany O’Grady), a young musician struggling to pay rent and to take care of her brother. The series features original music by Bareilles in her very first television credit. Nelson, who wrote the book for the Broadway adaptation of Waitress, serves as showrunner and wrote and directed the first episode.

Six-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald added to her trophy case on Friday night, picking up a win at the inaugural Antonyo Awards, a celebration of Black theater artists.

“Let’s celebrate with each other,” McDonald said, accepting her award for best actor in a play on Broadway before the virtual audience of theatergoers. “We have much to be proud of in our community, so let’s hold each other up and move forward.”

Presented by the Broadway Black organization, the Antonyo Awards ceremony stepped into a Tony-less year to exalt the best of Black theater, virtually. “The Antonyo Awards seek to fill the gap between Black talent and public acknowledgement,” executive producer Drew Shade said during the show. “Not in competition but in the spirit of community and celebration, we uplift Black theater artists because our lives matter and our art matters.”

Apple has unveiled the first look at coming-of-age drama series ‘Little Voice’, from the award-winning team of J.J. Abrams, Sara Bareilles and Jessie Nelson, that will premiere globally on Apple TV+.

A love letter to the diverse musicality of New York, the story follows Bess King, (Brittany O’Grady) a uniquely talented performer struggling to fulfill her dreams while navigating rejection, love, and complicated family issues. It’s a story about finding your authentic voice—and the courage to use it and is described as an intensely romantic tale.

The new series stars Brittany O’Grady, Sean Teale, Colton Ryan, Shalini Bathina, Kevin Valdez, Phillip Johnson Richardson and Chuck Cooper. It is produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. J.J. Abrams, Sara Bareilles, Jessie Nelson and Ben Stephenson executive produce. Nelson also wrote and directed the first episode.

Apple TV+ has put a face to its Little Voice. The streamer today unveiled the first-look photo of Brittany O’Grady in the lead role of its musical drama from J.J. Abrams, Sara Bareilles and Jessie Nelson and set a July 10 premiere date. Check out the pic below.

The half-hour coming-of-age series, which Apple TV+ ordered two years ago, is billed as a love letter to the diverse musicality of New York. In Finian's Rainbow, An elderly Irishman, Finian, moves to the southern United States with his daughter Sharon, to bury a stolen pot of gold nearFort Knox, in the mistaken belief that it will grow. Og, aleprechaun, follows them, desperate to recover his treasure before the loss of it turns him permanently human.

Cast members from Broadway’s Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Jagged Little Pill, Company, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, Chicago, Diana, Mean Girls, Girl from the North Country, Six, and Mrs. Doubtfire will take part in Sunday’s Broadway Does Mother’s Day, a digital variety benefitting Broadway Cares’ Covid-19 Emergency Assistance Fund.

The show is designed to replace some of the funds usually raised by Broadway’s annual Easter Bonnet Competition, an event that was canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The digital sketch show will include Broadway stars, their children and their mothers, with musical numbers, comedy and special guests planned. As we’re now about halfway through the Broadway season, there are currently eight productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards? “Choir Boy” (opens January 8; closes March 10)

In this new play by Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney, the story centers on the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, which for a half a century has been dedicated to the education of strong, ethical black men. One talented student has been waiting for years to take his rightful place as the leader of the school’s legendary gospel choir. But can he make his way through the hallowed halls of this institution if he sings in his own key?...

When Choir Boy, the coming of age story from Tarell Alvin McCraney that predates his Oscar-winning, co-written screenplay for Moonlight, finds its sweet spots – and they are many – the drama, the humor and the music take off for parts unknown. This is a play that, like its unstoppable main character, never quits reaching for the high note, even when perfection is beyond its grasp.

Set in a prestigious prep school for African American boys, Choir Boy – a Manhattan Theatre Club production opening tonight at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre – grapples with questions of pride and shame, sexual identity, legacies and duty. Memorably performed (particularly by its young star Jeremy Pope), its frequent choir songs beautifully sung by the entire cast, the production is another fine addition to director Trip Cullman’s resume (his Lobby Hero was one of Broadway’s 2018 bests).

Olivia Wilde’s “A Vigilante” has sold to Saban Films, along with DirecTV, at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Sarah Daggar-Nickson wrote and directed the crime drama. “A Vigilante” follows a once abused woman, Sadie (Wilde), who devotes herself to ridding victims of their domestic abusers. Morgan Spector, Kyle Catlett, C.J. Wilson, Tonye Patano, Chuck Cooper, Betsy Aidem, Judy Marte also star.

The film first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in March, and was nominated for a SXSW Gamechanger Award.
