When appraised in the cold light of day, The Wild Life (1984) stands as a fairly minor ’80s teen comedy, lacking the flash of broader, more risqué fare like Porky’s (1982) or the great characters that populated instant classics of the genre like 1982’s Fast Times At Ridgemont High (more on that in a second), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), or one of this critic’s personal favorites, Real Genius (1985). So why are we talking about the film’s recent Kino Lorber Blu-ray release at all?
In part, because of the rising talent behind and in front of the camera. The film’s cast includes Chris Penn, Eric Stoltz, Lea Thompson, Jenny Wright, Rick Moranis, Hart Bochner and Randy Quaid (and Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson in a fun cameo). Over the past few weeks, the Godzilla: King of Monsters cast has just kept growing and growing. Today we have word that another veteran performer has come aboard. Bradley Whitford, who just recently starred in Universal's critically-acclaimed low-budget thriller Get Out, has joined the cast. No details were given regarding his character quite yet, but he becomes the latest to join a very talented ensemble.
Variety broke the news of this casting addition earlier today, although there are no new details to report about any of the characters or this epic story. Bradley Whitford joins a cast that includes Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, Charles Dance and the most recent new addition to the cast, Thomas Middleditch. They will join original Godzilla stars Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins, who will reprise their roles from the original film as Dr.

The cast of Warner Bros. and Legendary's highly-anticipated Godzilla: King of Monsters is still coming together, with another actor lining up a key role in the sequel. Straight Outta Compton star O'Shea Jackson Jr., the son of rapper/actor Ice Cube, has entered negotiations to play an unspecified role in this big-budget action thriller, that serves as a follow-up to the 2014 blockbuster Godzilla. While it remains to be seen how many more new characters will come aboard, it is believed that only one actor from the 2014 Godzilla will return.
Variety broke the news of this casting, and while no details were given for his character, he is just the latest to come aboard recently. We reported in January that Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown is making her feature film debut with Godzilla: King of Monsters, with Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga coming aboard to portray her character's father and mother,...

If this weekend’s box office numbers proved one thing, it’s that Kong is indeed king – for now, at least – after Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island saw off competition from Logan to land an overly impressive $61 million domestically. Couple this with the film’s $81.6 international haul – one which doesn’t include China as of yet – and it’s small wonder why analysts have already deemed the second entry into the so-called MonsterVerse a bona fide success.
Thanks to a teasing post-credits scene, we know that Skull Island will neatly dovetail with Godzilla: King of the Monsters, at which point Krampus helmer Michael Dougherty will be courting Gojira back out of the ocean to do battle with a range of Massive Unidentifed Terrestrial Objects (MUTOs for short). Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah have all been earmarked as potential enemies, ensuring that the towering apex predator will have plenty of fighting...

Kong is king! And since 1933, Kong has been one of the iconic movie monsters. For over 80 years in numerous films, the giant ape has gone from a stop-motion puppet to a spectacle of computer-generated effects. But Kong isn’t the only super-charged element in director Jordan Vogt-Roberts' new monster movie, Kong: Skull Island, a rather fun and never-too-serious action adventure film.
Monsters are real. Well, at least that’s what scientist Bill Randa (John Goodman) believes. He's spent his entire life hunting for evidence of monsters and believes that proof exists on Skull Island, an undocumented place kept hidden by a massive storm. Randa is finally given permission to explore the island with the help of a military platoon led by Lt. Col. Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson). Knowing that something beyond imagination could exist on the island, Randa employs a tracker named James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston) as well.

Kong: Skull Island marks the triumphant return of King Kong to the theater for the first time since 2005 when Peter Jackson thought it was a good idea for a giant ape to ice skate with a damsel in distress, much to the chagrin of critics and audiences everywhere. This Kong doesn’t have time for ice skating or long walks around New York City because he’s got to protect his home from underground lizard hybrids, birds that can saw a man in half and even humans who feel Kong would look good over their mantle.

Chicago – King Kong is a wholly generated creature of the movies. Ever since the gorilla legend came to life on screen way back in 1933, he has appeared in countless official remakes, cheap exploitation flicks and now as a symbol of American overreach. He still rules in “Kong: Skull Island.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The story is by John Gatins – interpreted by three screenwriters – and directed with confidence by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“Kings of Summer”). The premise is right on point, as Skull Island becomes a destination in 1973 for a shadowy government agency, clueless scientists and a military desecrated by Vietnam. The obvious Kong/Cong allegory (as in Viet Cong) is never overtly exposed, it just becomes apparent as the mission creeps into potential tragedy on the island (sound familiar?). Besides this cool symbolism, the scale of the CGI monsters and humans interact well in the story, with enough humanity to play against the mystery...

(Spoilers ahead for “Kong: Skull Island.” So if you don’t wanna know anything about the movie or what’s in the big post-credits scene, walk away now and come back later.) There are two big takeaways to be had from the “Kong: Skull Island” post-credits scene. First, that we haven’t seen the last of Kong. And second, that there are more monsters out there. The scene gives a good look at the future of the Kong franchise. It shows protagonists James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston) and Mason Weaver (Brie Larson) being told by the Project Monarch organization that more monsters are out there.

With a new story faithful to the spirit of the 1933 original, Kong Skull Island is a roaring, chest-pounding triumph. After a WWII-set prologue on an uncharted island in the Pacific, Kong Skull Island jumps ahead to 1973. Scientist Bill Randa (John Goodman) of the same Project Monarch (one of several reference to the recent Warner Bros Godzilla reboot) persuades a senator (Richard Jenkins) to let him convene a military team to help survey a mystical, skull-shaped island. This crew includes freelance mercenary James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston), hotheaded Army colonel Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) and photojournalist Mason Weaver (Brie Larson) who brags about having helped turn public opinion against the waning Vietnam War. The rest of the ethnically diverse lineup includes Toby Kimmel as a doomed grunt (we know he’s toast because he writes a letter home to his son), John Ortiz as a scared Monarch exec, and Tian Jing as…...

Legendary Pictures, the company who revived Godzilla a few years back, is now trying to do the same for the classic Universal movie monster King Kong with the intentions of bringing the two together sometime in the future. If nothing else, they seem to have learned a lesson from Godzilla in terms of making sure to show the star of the movie as much as possible rather than hiding or teasing him.
After a prologue showing two downed WWII pilots encountering Kong, we cut forward to 1973 as the Vietnam War is coming to an end, and a group of scientists have discovered a new island in the Pacific with plans to send an exploratory mission. Spearheaded by John Goodman’s Bill Randa, they request a military escort, and as luck would have it, a group of soldiers led by Samuel L. Jackson’s Col. Packard, have just finished their actions...

Everything is becoming a cinematic universe. We’ve accepted that by now, I think. It’s just a matter of how it’s all crafted. On Friday, step two in what will be the return of a giant monster universe hits in Kong: Skull Island. Intended to be a prequel to Godzilla, setting up a fight down the line, this film seeks to also be something different from what we normally get from Kong. It’s all about him and his island, as opposed to his interactions with our world. This small change makes for a very different flick. The social ambitions are smaller, but the spectacle at hand can now be even larger. This is a blockbuster through and through folks. The movie is set in the past (it needs to set up movies set in the present, after all), during the Vietnam era, to be precise. When shady company Monarch,...

Kong fans rejoice. Skull Island delivers the monster beat down exactly as promised. The overall plot is fairly simplistic. That's not a deal killer here. The runtime, superb visual effects, and incredible sound editing make this theater experience a must see. You can almost feel Kong's snarling breath as he swats helicopters like flies.
The plot takes place in 1973 at the end of the Vietnam War. A team from a government agency called Monarch discovers a hidden island in the South Pacific. Led by Bill Randa (John Goodman), they put together an expedition to chart the mysterious Skull Island. Colonel Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson) is in command. His helicopter squadron will be responsible for transportation and security. Former Sas soldier turned elite mercenary, James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston), is hired as an expert tracker and extra gun hand. Rounding out the crew is Mason Weaver (Brie Larson), a celebrated war...

Over the years, he’s battled the Avengers, a love-sick sister, and his fellow neighbors in a swanky apartment complex, but Tom Hiddleston has never faced anything in cinema quite like Skull Island’s most iconic resident, King Kong. This weekend, Kong: Skull Island arrives in theaters everywhere from Legendary and Warner Bros., and to commemorate the occasion, Daily Dead recently joined several journalists to speak with co-star Hiddleston during the film’s press day.
During the roundtable interview, Hiddleston discussed coming on board Kong: Skull Island, how he prepared for the role of ex-sas (Special Air Service) Officer James Conrad, his experiences collaborating with co-star Brie Larson, and he even chatted a bit about Ben Wheatley’s High-Rise, which came out last spring.
Was the big appeal of Skull Island to get to be a part of a King Kong movie?

Tom Hiddleston is currently posing for photos in both New York and London. Well, his wax figure, that is.
Both Madame Tussauds locations unveiled Kong: Skull Island, a new attraction tied to the Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures film. It includes a stunningly realistic wax replica of Hiddleston's character Captain James Conrad, a colossal Mother Long-Legs spider, a jungle of bamboo and vines, and an 18-foot animatronic head of the titular creature. The Kong head took a team of 33 artists more than 72 days to build, and weighs more than 3,000 pounds.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Boiled down to its bonkers essence, Skull Island is a Vietnam war movie with monsters, a retro analog vibe, and a dash of both Moby-Dick and The X-Files. I’m “biast” (pro): love a good monster movie; love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
What’s the big surprise of Kong: Skull Island? No, it’s not a secret sequel to Peter Jackson’s 2005 film King Kong; the two movies are not connected in any way. And no, in fact, this Kong is not a sequel to 2014’s Godzilla, either, though the two are both part of the shared universe that’s being called the MonsterVerse; coming soon: Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019 and Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020.
Surprise! This isn’t a sequel to 2014’s Godzilla.

Having seen, and thoroughly enjoyed Kong: Skull Island, its tone is undeniable – an irreverent, unashamedly playful picture with a commitment to pure entertainment. What is somewhat more ambiguous, however, is how Thor: Ragnarok will play out, welcoming Taika Waititi to the helm, in what is anticipated to be a more comedically inclined endeavour for Marvel. Naturally when we sat down with Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki, we couldn’t help but quiz him on the issue.

Last month, when Kong: Skull Island started screening for the press, it was confirmed that there will be a post-credit scene, although no details about this scene were given. Reports later surfaced that this movie would help set up Warner Bros.' new Godzilla and King Kong universe, leading into the highly-anticipated Godzilla vs. Kong, which is slated for release in the summer of 2020. Today we finally have a description of the post-credits scene, which was shown during the movie's European premiere at London's Leicester Square. There will be Spoilers below, so read on at your own risk.

At the core of Jordan Vogt-Roberts first deviation into the world of the blockbuster – off the back of his indie hit The Kings of Summer – is a barbed study on the human condition, our ignorant sense of superiority, and somewhat bleak relationship with nature. To study the flaws and conscience of mankind seems a fitting theme given the picture is set during the Vietnam war – but it’s an element we merely scratch the surface of, in a film that otherwise thrives in its playful, irreverent approach, endearingly kitsch and gloriously overstated, with an unwavering commitment to entertainment.
Bill Randa (John Goodman) and his sidekick Houston Brooks (Corey Hawkins) are convinced there are undiscovered creatures on Skull Island, a remote location in the Pacific where no explorers have been and survived to tell of their discoveries. Warner Bros' monster-verse hits gold with the hugely enjoyable Kong: Skull Island. Here's our review...
What ingredients go in to a really good, satisfying monster movie? It goes without saying that you need a big, scary creature. A few decent human characters are worth having. Lots of great action. A splash of humour might help.
Less grandiose and romantic than Peter Jackson’s King Kong, more action-packed and pulpy than Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island feels like a throwback to a more innocent era of cinema - a period where movies had titles like The Valley Of Gwangi or Warlords Of Atlantis. Tom Hiddleston stars as a buff hero vaguely in the Doug McClure mould, though inevitably, he isn't really the main draw here - no, the true star of Skull Island is, of course, a certain colossal ape who first appeared in 1933.

King Kong has been an icon of cinema ever since the stop-motion gorilla stormed into the frame in 1933. With such a lofty reputation, it’s no wonder that subsequent versions of his story have struggled to get him right, fighting to reignite the potential of the franchise with mixed results. The campy 1976 vehicle faithfully resurrects the cartoonish aspects of the original in color (and proved an awkward launchpad for Jessica Lange’s career), while Peter Jackson’s fascinating 2005 effort melded old school escapism with new technology to such an extensive degree that it bled the concept dry. Just how much new escapism can you milk from one of the biggest faces in film history?

Kong: Skull Island compares to an animated theme-park ride (valiantly, I must add). An exciting, Vietnam-era coaster enclosed by digital screens. From Kong’s hasty introduction, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts asserts his reboot with a mighty roar. Gone is Peter Jackson’s flabby primate, traded for a muscular, toned God-figure who’s been maxing his jungle gym membership. Tight glutes (like, super-defined) will come in handy when challenging Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, but that’s a few years down the road still. First comes a military invasion sold on scientific motivations, and a lunatic commander who calls for Kong’s monstrous head. Hold on to your butts (Oh yea, Sammy J. resurrects our favorite quote), crank some Creedence and pick a side – the king is back, baby.

Don't anger the King is the moral of the final Kong: Skull Island trailer.
The trailer drops a little more than a week ahead of the film's March 10 release, and shows off a lot more of Kong's rage as he takes on man and monster alike. There's also a rather humorous tone on display, with Tom Hiddleston's Captain James Conrad blithely telling his team he wants a bonus if they survive the expedition, and Brie Larson's Mason Weaver totally being fine with the name "skull crawlers" for the monsters that live underground.

The early buzz surrounding Legendary's Kong: Skull Island has been mostly positive, which certainly bodes well for the film's chances when it stomps its way into theaters in just under a month. Two new international posters for the Jordan Vogt-Roberts-directed film have now surfaced, with the first one featuring the title character towering above all of Skull Island while eyeballing a few new helicopter toys. The second is slightly more intimate as we see both Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and Tom Hiddleston (Thor: Ragnarok) interact with the beast for the very first time. Check them out below: Kong: Skull Island reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific—as beautiful as it is treacherous—unaware that they’re crossing into...

Legendary Pictures is finally getting ready to move ahead with their "MonsterVerse," following 2014's Godzilla, which was helmed by Rogue One director Gareth Edwards. Next up is Kong: Skull Island, which is going to officially reboot the King Kong franchise and is going to deliver the biggest version of the Ape we have seen to date. This is all going to lead to a fight between Godzilla and King Kong in 2020, and now we have some new details about how these movies connect to one another.
Cinema Blend recently spoke with producer Alex Garcia, who worked on Kong: Skull Island. He revealed that John Goodman plays a guy who works for the mysterious Monarch corporation. Those who have seen Godzilla know that the company also factors into that movie as well. Here is what he had to say about it.

HollywoodNews.com: Lauren Conrad has showed off some of her childhood snaps in an anti-drugs video.
The ‘Hills’ star revealed various pictures of herself through the years as she urged teens not to give in to the temptations of illegal substances.
Appearing in the latest online film from Natural High TV, the 24-year-old said she has focused on her career as a TV personality and fashion designer instead.
“I think when you’re so involved with drugs you have such a lack of interest and you just don’t care about your future,” she said.
She added: “With fashion it was just this is what I want, so this is what I am going to do. “I just genuinely didn’t want to do them, never really had an interest in drugs.” Dad Jim Conrad, who also appears in the clip, said:
“Lauren always had a passion for fashion and design.

In a recorded video statement, Lc tells, “I think when you’re so involved with drugs you have such a lack of interest and you just don’t care about your future. It’s the same story over and over again, people don’t really learn from it. If it gets out there that you’re getting into bad things,...

Calling up comparisons with her celebrated father David may be too easy a jumping-off point in addressing Jennifer Lynch’s new film Surveillance, but it’s an unavoidable one—especially given that David is credited as an executive producer. But the younger Lynch comes into her own as a filmmaker with this movie (currently available via video-on-demand and beginning limited theatrical play from Magnolia Pictures this week), which should also dispel any lingering memories of the hostile reception that greeted her debut feature Boxing Helena over 15 years ago.
Superficially, Surveillance’s setup resembles that of Twin Peaks, with the beginning of an FBI murder investigation in a rural area teeming with odd folks. But as opposed to that eponymous lush Pacific Northwest town, the movie is set in a barren part of the Midwest (actually lensed in Saskatchewan, Canada), and whereas most of the eccentrics in David’s seminal series were viewed sympathetically,...

Surveillance, out in theaters on Jun 26th, 2009, is Jennifer Lynch’s first film since 1993’s strange twisted thriller Boxing Helena, which she made with Twin Peaks star Sherilynn Fenn. Boxing Helena is considered a very bad film by most people who watch films, so it caused some panic when, in 2005, Surveillance reared its head as Jennifer’s latest project. She’s also got another horror film coming out this year – Hisss, about an Indian myth of snake shape shifters. Surveillance has a touch of the comically macabre, something she may have inherited from her filmmaker father David Lynch, embedded in its small town murder spree plotline. It also has some very forced erotica and is gaudiness personified in the last 20 minutes.

Lauren Conrad had her original entourage, parents Kathy and James, along with her brother Brandon out to watch her help kick off the First Ever Style Week at the The Irvine Spectrum Center with a "Homecoming Fashion Show" last night. Lo Bosworth also came to watch and even though Audrina didn't make the drive, after last night's episode things seem to be looking up for the girls' friendship. Even though she doesn't talk about her real life fashion design career on the show, Lauren continued to show off her style last night while the dramatic (and now famous) single black mascara tear made another appearance. Between the drama in Vegas and the big heart to heart, the ladies still managed to sneak in some great meals and awesome gadgets. To see more of Lc, Lo, and a lot of Conrads, just read more.
