AMC Networks has released a gripping new trailer for the second season of The Walking Dead: Dead City, and it’s clear that the battle for survival in a crumbling Manhattan is far from over.
Season 2 is officially set to premiere in a few months on Sunday, May 4th at 9:00 p.m. Et on AMC and AMC+, with more brutal showdowns, power struggles, and character clashes on the horizon.
Returning to their fan-favorite roles, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan reprise their portrayals of Negan and Maggie, two characters whose fraught alliance continues to unravel. While the undead still pose a deadly threat, the bigger danger this season might be each other. With tension rising and trust wearing thin, the two find themselves caught in a power play that could reshape the future of the island.
The trailer opens with an eerie cover of “Manhattan” by Rodgers & Hart, setting a haunting tone.

“The Walking Dead: Dead City follows the popular Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) characters traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, long ago cut off from the mainland,” reads AMC’s synopsis. “In season two, in the growing war for control of New York City, Maggie and Negan find themselves trapped on opposite sides. Fans of The Walking Dead: Dead City were greeted with a post-apocalyptic treat today as AMC Networks released the first trailer for the upcoming second season. It'll be almost two years since the first season premiered in June 2023 when Season 2 makes its debut, so this wait is long overdue to see the return of Maggie and Negan.
Dead City Season 2 will continue the evolving work to control New York City between Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they have to deal with villains that include the dead and other conflicts that have made the city their haven of anarchy. The trailer is expertly played to the tune of "Manhattan" by Rodgers & Hart, which works well to set the tone for the city that has been at the center of this conflict. New villains make an appearance, but another return appears to be in the works as Lucille,...

With Westerns like Yellowstone reigniting the genre for TV, Netflix decided to take things in a raw and unadulterated direction. The streamer achieves this with the shockingly gory American Primeval, which focuses on the 1850s and the Utah War.
The series depicts American soldiers, the Mormons and Natives battling for territory. Along the way, the show maps out one of the most tragic love stories of its genre. But it's not the one fans think is on top of the list. It's a darker story, focusing on Dane DeHaan's Jacob Pratt and his wife, Abish.

Since its television debut in 2010, fans have never been able to get enough of The Walking Dead universe. The flagship series lasted for 11 seasons and gave birth to several spin-offs, including Dead City, which serves as a direct sequel to the main saga. Premiering in 2023, fans were reunited with Maggie (Lauren Cohen) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they navigated a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, and now they're back for a second season, which officially returns to AMC on May 4, 2025.
The news came yesterday during IGN Fan Fest, and on hand to discuss the upcoming season were Morgan and Cohen – who also serve as executive producers – and Scott Gimple, Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead universe at AMC. While Season 1 of Dead City had a clear antagonist by way of Željko Ivanek as The Croat, that isn't the case in Season 2, which Gimple said has a lot going on in it.

Last year, Netflix inked a deal with AMC to bring some of their most popular shows to the biggest streaming platform in the world, and thus far, the partnership has proven beneficial to both parties. AMC series like Dark Winds, A Discovery of Witches, and The Walking Dead became streaming hits once again on Netflix, entering the Top 10 charts long after their premiere. That being said, there was one show that was expected to hit Netflix last month that, for whatever reason, is now coming out in March: The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Taylor Sheridan has made a name for himself in the TV industry as the creator and writer of a plethora of hit shows like Yellowstone, its prequels 1883 and 1923, Special Ops: Lioness, Tulsa King, and the recent drama Landman starring Billy Bob Thornton as a Texas oil man (which even Stephen King is a fan of). His scripts also made it to the big screen with the 2015 movie Sicario and his project Hell or High Water (2016), which was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture. However, before Sheridan became a powerhouse behind the scenes, he was an aspiring actor. After a few guest spots in the mid-aughts, he finally landed a recurring role on the hit FX biker drama Sons of Anarchy.

Quick LinksHow Does Jai Courtney Play Captain Boomerang?Who Does Jai Courtney Play in American Primeval?
The following contains spoilers for American Primeval, now streaming on Netlflix.
James Gunn has confused fans about what's being kept for the new Dcu. He said that Creature Commandos Season 1 is where the reboot starts, although certain elements from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker (both of which he helmed) will be retained. As polarizing as that is, there were bright spots from that era which Zack Snyder kickstarted. One of them is the underrated Captain Boomerang.
Played by Australian actor Jai Courtney, the Dceu's Boomerang was the most unhinged member of the Suicide Squad, surpassing that same energy from the comics and other DC media. Interestingly, Courtney plays a similarly maniacal character in what is arguably Netflix's best Western: American Primeval. In the 2025 series, Courtney's character is a lot more sadistic as a merciless leader.

She was the fitness guru with short, spikey blonde hair that became famous for her weight-loss infomercials where her catchphrase, "Stop the insanity," became a cultural phenomenon. These days, she's an Uber Eats driver living in Las Vegas, but back then, she was one of the most recognizable faces in the world and, according to her, was once courted by Kevin Costner to star in his box office flop, Waterworld.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Powter – who was once so famous she was given her own talk show – says she received a phone call from Costner at the height of her popularity. The call came whilst she was in the middle of a beauty appointment in L.A., and, as she remembers it, Costner was understanding when she turned him down.
"He was about to shoot that movie.

Quick Links American Primeval's Governor Young Helps Cover Up Genocide American Primeval's Governor Young Gets Another Victory
The following contains spoilers for American Primeval, now streaming on Netflix.
In contrast with many westerns, Netflix's American Primeval has many arcs intersecting. The main beat focuses on Taylor Kitsch's Isaac and his mission: escorting Sara, her son Devin, and a Shoshone girl, Two Moons, to Crook Springs to meet Devin's rich father. This leads them to clash with native tribes, as well as violent white people who either want to rob them, or flex power in the American Frontier of 1857.
Another big arc revolves around Utah's governor, Brigham Young. This figure is based on a real-world character, who is all about playing politics and duping the cabinet in Washington. Young has a Mormon militia, a lot of territory, wealth and resources to ensure his Latter Day Saints church is a movement to be reckoned with.

American Primeval recently premiered on Netflix, and since then, it’s managed to garner quite a fanbase. Set in 1857, the series chronicles a number of stories that all converge in America’s Utah territory during the turbulent time of westward expansion. A dark western thriller, the series showcases ongoing clashes between the U.S. Army, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Lds), and multiple indigenous tribes. The catalyst of the series begins with the Mormon-sanctioned Mountain Meadows Massacre and then continues to display Brigham Young’s (Kim Coates) efforts to control Utah outside the confines of the United States, no matter the cost.
While the series also tells the story of Sara (Betty Gilpin), her young son Devin (Preston Mota), and their reluctant guide Isaac (Taylor Kitsch), who is helping them in their efforts to travel west, American Primeval's overarching narrative focuses on the bloody and...

American Primeval is the most popular Netflix show of 2025 so far! It's still early, but fans want to know if American Primeval season 2 is happening and what's next for the series from writer Mark L. Smith and director Peter Berg.
American Primeval starring Betty Gilpin and Taylor Kitsch premiered on Netflix on Jan. 9 and has been a huge hit for Netflix since then. The series follows Sara (Gilpin) on her journey West in 1857 with her young son, Devin (Preston Mota). After Sara and Devin are caught up in the Mountain Meadows Massacre, Isaac Reed (Kitsch) tries to lead them to safety, but dangers lurk in these lands. The series was inspired by real events.
While the American Primeval ending doesn't necessarily set up a clear second season, there's definitely some story left to be explored in American Primeval season 2. It doesn't sound like Berg and Smith are interested in taking the story in that direction.

Since its Netflix debut on January 9, American Primeval has been making headlines as one of the most brutal, gritty must-watch Western sagas ever to grace our television screens.
Taking place in 1857 Utah, the series follows fugitive mother Sara Roswell (Betty Gilpin) and her son Devin (Preston Mota) as they navigate the lawless terrain with their guide, Isaac Reed (Taylor Kitsch). It depicts the bloody, violent collision of early American settlers with indigenous tribes, cultists, religion, bounty hunters, the U.S. government, and ruthless ole Mother Nature herself.
In the wake of its success, questions abound as to whether the story is based on actual events. The answer, my dear friends, is yes, American Primeval is based on the true and deadly story of the Mountain Meadows Massacre. It also portrays real-life people. Director Peter Berg said he found inspiration for American Primeval in 2020 after reading a story about the Utah War.

Fans of Sons of Anarchy should check out Netflix's new miniseries American Primeval because of Kim Coates. Sons of Anarchy aired on FX from 2008 to 2014. All seven seasons of Sons of Anarchy were critically-acclaimed, and the show currently has a score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes (via Rotten Tomatoes). Sons of Anarchy follows the members of a motorcycle gang which operates in the fictional town of Charming, California. Ever since Taylor Sheridan's 2015 hit Sicario debuted, he quickly became a critically revered multi-hyphenate in Hollywood. Award-winning films like Hell or High Water and his Yellowstone television empire soon followed, establishing the Texas native in the industry as a character-focused storyteller, notably ridding himself of writer's room constraints and breaking traditional, plot-driven rules. As his work garners continued praise, fans have turned their attention to his rise to fame. Before discovering his behind-the-scenes talent, Sheridan began his film career as an actor.
Despite becoming a Western staple of modern film and TV, his first claim to fame was FX's outlaw, biker-gang drama Sons of Anarchy. Created and directed by Kurt Sutter, the show follows lead Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam) as he navigates the titular club (often referred to by the acronym Samcro) after his father's death. Although Samcro protects its Californian hometown from various threats, it also runs an illegal arms business.

[This story contains spoilers from Netflix’s American Primeval.]
“We do believe that people, if they want to understand where we’re at today, should look at where we were then,” director Peter Berg told a small room of reporters last October, as he, executive producer Eric Newman and Indigenous Consultant Julie O’Keefe, gathered at Netflix’s L.A. office as part of an early look at their project American Primeval.
The Western drama, which debuted Jan. 9 on Netflix, is less interested in Hollywood’s historically rose-colored, inspirational, adventurous — and sometimes even melodramatic — telling of America’s founding. Instead, the six-episode miniseries is more focused on how people and their explicable and inexplicable violence shaped a moment in U.S. history that ultimately led to the forging of a nation.

In a television landscape where Taylor Sheridan has largely cornered the market on stories about western expansion with Yellowstone and its spinoffs 1883 and 1923, American Primeval has stood out for its exploration of the Utah Territory and the role settlers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Lds) played in halting migration to the area. The efforts of which culminated in the gruesome 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre, depicted in the Netflix miniseries, that left some 120 travelers dead.

American Primeval episode 6, the series finale, begins shortly after the events of episode 5. Virgil (Jai Courtney) and the bounty hunters finally caught up with Sara (Betty Gilpin). Virgil ties her up on a horse and heads for Fort Bridger, trying to put as much distance between themselves and Isaac (Taylor Kitsch) as possible.
Elsewhere, Abish (Saura Lightfoot-Leon) has convinced Red Feather (Derek Hinkey) and the Shoshone that the Mormons led by Wild Bill (Alex Breaux) and James Wolsey (Joe Tippett) will not stop looking for her until she is killed. At this point, she is the only remaining survivor from the attack that they know about. She's the one who could pin the attack on Brigham Young's forces, so they need to eliminate her. After they wiped out the US Army forces, they'll be heading to the Shoshone next.

Now, they bring their fierce passion and dedication to Peter Berg’s American Primeval, an epic new Western on Netflix. American Primeval episode 4 ends with the Mormons learning the US Army is about to attack thanks to a traitor in the US Army's ranks. We know Wild Bill and Brigham Young will not let that happen, and it sets up a major showdown between the Mormons and the US Army in American Primeval episode 5.
In addition, Devin (Preston Mota) just broke his leg after getting it stomped on by a horse. Isaac (Taylor Kitsch), Sara (Betty Gilpin), and Two Moons (Shawnee Pourier) take shelter in a convenient cabin while Devin heals.
Overall, American Primeval episode 5 is the shortest episode of the season. You'll notice this recap is notably shorter, as well, compared to the other American Primeval recaps. While there are some major events, the penultimate episode moves the many pieces around for clashes in the finale.

There’s little doubt that The Walking Dead is one of the greatest post-apocalyptic franchises of all time. Beginning in 2010, the adaptation of Robert Kirkman's comic book series astounded audiences with its tale of people in a zombie-infested America trying to do everything they could to survive. The AMC series was so successful that it spawned a number of spin-offs, and now, perhaps the greatest Walking Dead series is climbing the charts on Netflix to find a whole new audience.
Per Netflix, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live now sits at number five on their list of Top 10 TV shows at the time of this writing, sandwiched in between Squid Games at number four, and the comedy special Gabriel Iglesias: The Legend of Fluffy at number six. "Friday Night Lights," the television drama that followed the ups and downs of the Dillon High School Panthers football team, is rightly considered by critics and viewers to be one of the finest shows of the 21st century. Though the series was never a Nielsen ratings hit over its five seasons (curious given that it's a hugely compelling and accessible saga centered on the most popular sport in the United States), those who loved it rode a weekly emotional rollercoaster of victories, defeats, romances, break-ups and one murder (an ill-considered plotline that stands as the series' only egregious misstep). The writing, spearheaded by showrunner Jason Katims, was, aside from the aforementioned detour, always sharp and surprising, while the cast, led by Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, struck resonant chords with their portrayals of decent yet flawed human beings trying to do right by their teammates,...

Netflix is riding into the new year with one of the most brutal depictions of expansion in the American West thanks to a relentlessly intense mini-series called American Primeval. Created and written by Mark L. Smith, with direction by Peter Berg, American Primeval revolves around Sara (Betty Gilpin) and her son, Devin (Preston Mota) traveling through harsh and unforgiving territory with a survivalist, Isaac (Taylor Kitsch), to escape a grim fate and find a new home. While making the journey, they experience violent collisions with cults, religious zealots, cutthroats, and lawmakers willing to kill to create a new world.
To mark the arrival of American Primeval, we spoke with the show’s director, Peter Berg, the Indigenous Consultant Julie O’Keefe, and lead actors Betty Gilpin (Sara), Taylor Kitsch (Isaac), Dane DeHaan (Jacob Pratt), Kim Coates (Bringham Young), Derek Hinkey (Red Feather), and Saura Lightfoot-Leon (Abish Pratt) about their respective roles,...

If you're one of the millions of people who watched Netflix's newest hit American Primeval over the weekend, then you already know how brutal the series can be at certain points. Should you have yet to see it, just know that it's a show that doesn't flinch when it comes to detailing the fight between religion and culture in the American West, and even goes so far as to show one character being (partially) scalped during the Mountain Meadows Massacre in Episode 1. Now, actor Dane DeHaan reveals what it was like being on the receiving end of a knife during that gut-wrenching sequence.
Speaking with Decider about American Primeval, DeHann – who portrays Jacob Pratt – dished on what it was like filming the scalping, and playing its aftermath. "It's intense to be scalped," he said, adding that the moment was one of his favorites to shoot in the series, if...

American Primeval debuted at the top of the Netflix television chart, with the series quickly becoming a hit with audiences despite mixed critical reviews (MovieWeb's Matt Mahler gave the series a near-perfect review). Created by Mark L. Smith and executive produced by director Peter Berg, the show offers a dark and brutal look at frontier life, specifically in the region of Utah during the 1850s when violent conflicts erupted between the Mormons and the U.S. government, with different settlers and Indigenous communities caught in the crossfire. The entirety of the six-episode series premiered on January 9, and although labeled a miniseries, there may be hope for a second installment.
In an interview with Decider, Peter Berg, who directed all episodes of the series, reflected on his time during production and talked about the conditions that would bring him back for a second season, or at the very least would help to...

The entire nine-episode first season of American Primeval recently dropped on Netflix. Following the release, director Pete Berg explained why the violent clashes between various characters vying for control of the American West, was necessary.
"One of the themes [series creator] Mark L. Smith and I wanted to explore was man's inherently violent nature," Berg told Collider when asked to elaborate on a specific sequence in Episode 1. "Certainly, if you go back to the origins of this country and start studying and documenting the history of violence committed by humans upon humans up to the present day that we're living in today, and certainly from the origin story of America and other countries - almost all of them - we are a violent species."

American Primeval, a six-part miniseries on Netflix, stars Shae Whigham, Taylor Kitsch, Kim Coates, and Betty Gilpin as it explores the gritty and harsh life on the American frontier. The Western is based in part on real events that took place in Utah during the 1850s and incorporates many of the same brutality and fortitude exhibited by the people who lived through them.
The bloodshed in American Primeval may not be a surprise to fans of show creator and writer Mark L. Smith. Smith co-wrote 2015's The Revenant starring Leonardo DiCaprio with director Alejandro G. Inarritu. Like American Primeval, The Revenant was also based on the life of a real frontiersman named Hugh Glass and featured acts of extreme violence, notably the famous bear mauling scene.
Director and executive producer of American Primeval, Peter Berg, and the other makers of the miniseries went to great lengths to ensure a level of authenticity,...
