Just days after Fox Corp. settled the Dominion defamation suit for $787.5 million, the company’s executive chairman and CEO, Lachlan Murdoch, dropped defamation proceedings against the independent Australian news site Crikey, which linked his family to the U.S. Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021.
In August 2022, Murdoch launched defamation proceedings in a Sydney court against Crikey’s owners, Private Media, over an article published in June that named the Murdoch family as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the Jan. 6 attack. The filing came a day after Private Media’s chairman, Eric Beecher, and managing editor Peter Fray put their names on an ad in The New York Times inviting Murdoch to sue them.
Murdoch’s lawyer John Churchill told the BBC that pursuing the case would only benefit Crikey.
“Mr. Murdoch remains confident that the court would ultimately find in his favour,” Churchill said in a statement to the BBC. “However he...

Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch is dropping his defamation claim against Australian news site Crikey over a column that connected him to the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
In a statement, Murdoch’s attorney, John Churchill, cited the recent settlement of Dominion’s lawsuit against Fox Corp. and Fox News in dropping the litigation. In the proceedings, which might not have started until next year, Crikey was poised to introduce material gathered during the discovery process in the Dominion suit, in which Fox agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle the claim and avoid a trial.
“It’s a matter of public record that Crikey admits that there is no truth to the imputations that were made about Mr. Murdoch in the article,” Churchill said. “In their latest attempt to change their defense strategy, Crikey has tried to introduce thousands of pages of documents from a defamation case from another jurisdiction,...

Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch filed suit against Australian news site Crikey on Tuesday over an opinion column that connected the Murdochs to the siege of the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.
The statement of claim was filed in Federal Court of Australia.
After receiving legal threats from Murdoch’s attorney, Crikey challenged him to file the suit and test of Australia’s “too restrictive” defamation laws. Crikey ran a full-page ad in The New York Times on Monday, as Eric Beercher, the chairman of its parent company, Private Media, said that it was “looking forward to meeting Lachlan Murdoch in court, as he has foreshadowed, to test the defamation laws he and his editors constantly complain about.”
At issue is a June 29 analysis piece on the January 6th Committee hearings with the headline, “Trump is a confirmed unhinged traitor. And Murdoch is his unidentified co-conspirator.”
The author, politics editor Bernard Keane,...

The historical comedy The Favourite is proving to be a definite contender for the major awards this season. After picking up a win for star Olivia Colman at the Golden Globes, plus 12 BAFTA nominations, the film is well on its way to being a heavy hitter. Set during the reign of Queen Anne of Great Britain, the story revolves around a messy triangle between the queen, her longtime confidant, and an ambitious newcomer to the court. The movie shows all the scheming and hijinks - but the best part is that it's all based on a true story.
The Backstory
Queen Anne (played by Colman) was part of the Stuart dynasty, who came to the English throne after Queen Elizabeth died without children and left the throne to James I, son of Mary, Queen of Scots. Her father was the deposed King James II, who was overthrown in the Glorious...

The Favourite is Yorgos Lanthimos' best English film, and a barbed period piece with winning performances from Emma Stone and Olivia Colman.
As a storyteller, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos can be an acquired taste. Often preferring a sharp and sardonic eye, his first two English language films divided audiences more starkly than they did critics, with The Lobster being an especially cynical parable about the social pressures placed on coupling, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer updating the tragedy of Iphigenia in Aulis to American suburbia. So by virtue of being a period piece, The Favourite is automatically his most accessible (and commercial) English work to date. It also happens to be his very best, utilizing a familiar template that complements his sensibilities, as opposed to contrasts them, and thereby creates a portrait of 18th century England so dry in wit that its canvas appears built of sandpaper.

Spring is a season of renewal, particularly in the movie business, where the completion of the awards derby allows Amy Adams to segue from playing a solemn nun in "Doubt" to a klutzy crime scene cleaner in "Sunshine Cleaning." Along with "Sunshine," there are plenty of festival favorites about to get their day in the sun, whether that's in theaters, on DVD or on demand online or on TV. This preview recognizes the many ways to get your indie film fix, as well as the special events you might want to head out to if you live in New York or Los Angeles, including "The Brothers Bloom" director Rian Johnson's week-long con man movie "Festival of Fakery" at L.A.'s famed New Beverly Cinema, about which we recently spoke to the director. But regardless of whether we're watching films from the past or present, we're looking forward to the next couple months.
