Review: For those who don’t know, for the last fourteen years, Ricky Stanicky was a red-hot script floating around Hollywood, with people as varied as Jim Carrey, James Franco, and Joaquin Phoenix set to play the lead role. Having placed on The Black List, the script by Jeff Bushell, Jason Decker, and David Occhino was in limbo for quite a while before Peter Farrelly and his frequent collaborators Pete Jones and Mike Cerrone took a stab at it, meaning the film now...

Well, it took Peter Farrelly exactly two movies to go from winning Best Picture back to making broad comedies about dog boners; I guess some people never change. Of course, “Green Book” was only about two dog boners away from being as dumb — or dumber — than a Farrelly classic like “There’s Something About Mary” to begin with, but even so, the funniest thing about “Ricky Stanicky” might be how recently its director was holding an Oscar on the stage of the Dolby Theater.

Actually, no: The funniest thing about “Ricky Stanicky” is the sight of John Cena dressed as Alice Cooper and singing “Sploooooooge out. My. Penis” to the tune of “School’s Out” (for summer), which is one of the signature “jizz jams” his character performs at the semen-themed musical revue he launched after his dog-fucking show was canceled because “Atlantic City went all woke.”

Anyway, those are the two funny things about “Ricky Stanicky.

Peter Farrelly’s Ricky Stanicky concerns a trio of best friends who create an imaginary person to blame for their misdeeds. As the years go by, Dean (Zac Efron), Jt (Andrew Santino), and Wes (Jermaine Fowler) continue using “Ricky” as an excuse any time they want to skip, say, a family gathering or sneak out on a boys’ weekend. In such moments, they simply tell their significant others that Ricky really needs them right now.

That’s a solid enough setup for a film, a kind of coming-of-middle-age comedy in the vein of Jeff Tomsic’s Tag, where the characters’ commitment to a childhood tradition ends up jeopardizing their adult lives in the process. But where the antics of Tag’s characters effectively captured the stupid joy of acting like your younger self while hanging out with your oldest friends, Ricky Stanicky is stupid in a much less joyful way.

The Farrelly Brothers will forever be synonymous with slapstick, gross-out comedies like Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary, both of which are, gag for gag, among the funniest films of the 1990s.

Apart from belated sequel Dumb and Dumber To in 2014, the brothers have concentrated on solo projects. In recent years, Peter Farrelly has directed acclaimed 2018 film Green Book, while Bobby directed underrated 2023 comedy Champions.

Peter Farrelly directed the Amazon MGM Studios feature that begins streaming March 7. The movie follows Dean (Efron) and two lifelong friends who invent an imaginary pal named Ricky Stanicky as someone to blame for a childhood prank gone wrong. The three buddies continue to attribute their mishaps over the years to the nonexistent friend until finally deciding to hire a struggling actor known as “Rock Hard” Rod (Cena) to portray Ricky when their partners want to meet him.

“Ricky Stanicky isn’t real,” Efron tells Cena, who appears to be taking the gig too far. This leads Cena to explain why he wants to continue playing the part: “My job sucked, I had no friends. But now I have all those things.”

Peter Farrelly made his name in Hollywood by directing raunchy comedies such as "Dumb and Dumber" and "There's Something About Mary" alongside his brother, Bobby Farrelly. Chicago – “Dumb And Dumber To” is an exercise in diminishing returns. Jim Carrey and the Farrelly Brothers expend twice the effort for less than a third of the laughs. It benefits greatly from the enormous well of goodwill created by the original’s inspired idiocy.

But one can only suspend disbelief for so long and this sequel has problems that the warm glow of nostalgia can’t solve.

Picking up 20 years after the original, Carrey and Daniels head back out on the road to find the daughter Daniels never knew he had. The script – which is credited to six writers – uses the plot as the flimsiest of clotheslines on which to hang its physical gags.

It’s less a movie than a string of punchlines in search of a decent setup. Some work, but many many do not. The first time Carrey pulls an elaborate fake out routine on Daniels it’s mildly amusing.

Once upon a time, the Farrelly Brothers constructed sight gags capable of reaching new heights (or depths, as the case may be). Right about the time Brett Favre was murdering comedy in There’s Something About Mary, however, they abandoned their bread and butter in favor of a “comic spaghetti” approach. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are seen hitting the road in their iconic Mutt Cutts dog van in the poster for the Farrelly Brothers' eagerly-awaited comedy sequel.

The plot for the sequel will pick up 20 years after the events of the 1994 original with Lloyd (Carrey) and Harry (Daniels) setting out to find the long-lost son Harry never knew he had.

Rob Riggle has signed on for one of the last major roles in Universal's comedy sequel Dumb and Dumber To, which is currently shooting in Atlanta.

The actor is actually taking on a dual role, portraying Travis, a handyman, and his unstable twin brother Captain Lippencott. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne from 1994's Dumb and Dumber, who hit the road once again to find Harry's long-lost daughter, who is in need of a kidney transplant. We first reported on the sequel's story last August, although it wasn't known which of the duo's child it was until now.

The supporting cast includes Kathleen Turner, Brady Bluhm, Laurie Holden, Rachel Melvin and Steve Tom.

Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly are directing from a screenplay the co-wrote with Bennett Yellin and Mike Cerrone. Sean Anders and John Morris wrote an earlier draft of the script.

It’s been almost two decades since they first took to the screen, and now Harry and Lloyd are officially making their return with Jim Carrey sharing the first photo from the set of Dumb and Dumber To.

Talk of a sequel has been circling for years, and now it’s finally happening. The original was a lot of fun, the 2003 prequel (which featured a different cast) largely went unseen, and it’s going to be interesting to see how audiences receive the long-awaited sequel, twenty years on.

Jeff Daniels and Carrey are of course back once more as Harry and Lloyd, with Laurie Holden (The Walking Dead) recently taking the female antagonist lead, alongside Kathleen Turner, Rachel Melvin, Cam Neely, Brady Bluhm, and Steve Tom.

The Farrelly brothers’ long-awaited sequel to their classic comedy film Dumb and Dumber, which took characters with low Iq and made them wholly loveable (and also introduced us to the most annoying sound in the world), is finally set to begin filming this month with both Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey signed on to reprise their roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne.

Deadline is reporting that Laurie Holden, best known fro AMC’s The Walking Dead, has joined the cast of Dumb and Dumber To. In the film she will play “Adele Pichlow, the well to do wife of a doctor who is up to no good and who plans to use Harry and Lloyd to cover her tracks.”

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are returning to their respective roles of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne. They will also be joined by Kathleen Turner as Fraida Fletcher.

The Farrelly Brothers (Peter and Bobby) are back directing and they also wrote the script with Bennett Yellin (Dumb & Dumber, Stuck on You) and Mike Cerrone (Me, Myself and Irene, The Three Stooges) from a draft by Sean Anders and John Morris (Hot Tub Time Machine, We’re the Millers).

Chicago – Moe, Larry and Curly are three of the most popular names in the show business universe, and bringing them back to life in the new film “The Three Stooges” was a questionable risk. The re-imaging, with Chris Diamantopoulous, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso filling the trio’s roles, is a loving tribute that unfortunately veers in too many “Un-Stooge” like directions.

What works immediately is the care and detail given the famous comedy team by the three leads stepping into the personalities. It was obvious that they wanted to make sure that the Stooge essence was honored, and that mission was accomplished. None of the three pushed the characters, they simply played them as faithfully as their talent could deliver. The standout was Chris Diamantopoulous’s Moe, who honored the character (and subsequently, the real man) so much that it felt like a time machine has transported the...

First, the good news: this is a heartfelt homage to The Three Stooges of yore, and its leading actors do a remarkable job of channeling Moe, Larry and Curly. Kids who have never seen the Stooges, and adults who haven’t revisited them lately, may have a good time, as the audience did when I saw the film the other night, but ultimately, the movie is the comedy equivalent of a cubic zirconia: an imitation. There doesn't seem to be a single pressing reason for the Farrelly Brothers to have made a Three Stooges-less movie titled "The Three Stooges." Bobby and Peter Farrelly's love of the Stooges is well-known, but they should have left well enough alone after "Dumb and Dumber," a superior and certainly easier to swallow Stooges homage. For starters, the three comedians in the Farrellys' new and more direct tribute's title roles just don't have any comedic chemistry. Geographically, the Farrellys' trio may be close-knit but beyond that, there's nothing to suggest that Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos are an organically united group. It should be noted that there's also nothing categorically wrong with the Farrellys reusing their idols' routines. But if the actors playing the Stooges can't form a good, cohesive troupe of comedians, resurrecting Moe, Larry and Curly is pointless.
