The 1970s saw a variety of musical movies, of which many have now become classics, among them Grease, which has two very dark Elvis Presley coincidences, one of them the result of a tragedy. It’s not unusual for stage musicals to be adapted into movies, and in 1978, it was Grease’s turn. The musical, by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, made its debut in the early 1970s to great success, and just a couple of years later, it was brought to the big screen by director Randal Kleiser.

The box office is exploding with tentpole movies and has recorded one of the biggest Black Friday collections ever in North America. Wicked is already set to be one of the biggest movies of the year, and it has once again set a new record even before saying goodbye to the second weekend. It has surpassed Grease’s domestic haul to become the highest-grossing musical adaptation and the first to achieve another huge feat. Scroll below for the deets.

Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, was released in 1978. The musical rom-com was directed by Randal Kleiser and based on the 1972 musical of the same name by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. It revolves around the lives of greaser Danny Zuko and Australian transfer student Sandy Olsson, who develop a deep attraction for one another during a summer romance.

Wicked has broken a major all-time box office record. The new movie, which was directed by Jon M. Chu, is an adaptation of the 2003 Broadway musical of the same name with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, which in turn was based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire detailing the origin story of The Wizard of Oz's Wicked Witch of the West. The Wicked release kicked off the weekend before Thanksgiving with a record-shattering $112.5 million gross, which was the third best debut of 2024 at the time.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Wicked is projected to earn a 3-day gross of $80.6 million and a 5-day gross of $118 million over Thanksgiving weekend at the domestic box office. This will bring its cumulative domestic total to roughly $263 million, shattering a 46-year-old box office record. That total will make the movie the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation...

The original "Grease" stage musical first debuted at the Kingston Mines night club in Chicago in 1971. The book was by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, who also wrote the music and lyrics with John Farrar. Set in the 1950s, "Grease" was a winking, somewhat bawdy anti-nostalgia piece about high school greasers and car nuts falling in love after a significant summer vacation. It banked on the images of squeaky-clean 1950s teeny-bopper movies, but inserted sexuality, a teen pregnancy, gang violence, and themes of class. The main characters were Danny the greaser and Sandy the square. They had a romantic fling in the summer, but may be too embarrassed to date one another during the school year. Their relationship is reconciled when Sandy adopts the clothes and mannerisms of the greasers. "Grease" moved to Broadway in 1972 and played all the way through 1980, making it the longest-running Broadway show at the time.

Paramount+ is hoping its latest series will be the one that you want. Like greased lightnin’ (go greased lightnin’), the “Grease” prequel series “Rise of the Pink Ladies” is racing to the streamer on April 6, in time for you to binge it over those summer nights eventually. Paramount+ announced the news from their January 9 presentation for the Television Critic’s Association Winter press tour and, because there are worse things they could do, released a short teaser for the teen musical series to accompany it.

The series is a prequel to “Grease,” the 1978 film itself adapted from the 1971 stage musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Directed by Randal Kleiser, the movie was led by John Travolta and the late Olivia Newton-John as star-crossed greaser Danny Zuko and good girl Sandy Olsson, but the film became a cultural sensation (raking in 366.2 million at the global box office) thanks in part to the memorable supporting cast,...

The 1978 movie Grease has a classic makeover plot and fun catchy songs, some of which were new for the screen adaptation as part of several things that were changed from the original stage musical. Written by Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs, the musical saw several versions performed in Chicago, New York City, and London following its debut in 1971. However, the story of innocent girl Sandy Dombrowski (changed to Sandy Olsson for the movie) meeting bad boy Danny Zuko has endured.

While there are many Grease movie characters, the love story between Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) and Danny (John Travolta) is the most popular part of the adaptation. The 1950s fashion, nostalgic settings like the Frosty Palace diner, and optimistic music provide the backdrop for this tale of falling in love and working through questions about identity. In both versions, Sandy feels more confident and Danny learns to be softer and more compassionate.

When I was in high school there was an unspoken rule that said you were either a superfan of The Cure or The Smiths, but not both. Looking back now, this is an invented rivalry, as both groups cover much of the same artistic ground and appeal to like-minded fans. I’ve been thinking about this theory a lot lately, because it really showcases the sort of things that feel of world-shattering importance when you are a teenager. And while I squandered much of my misspent youth dancing in my bedroom to both “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” and “The Lovecats,” there was another, perhaps more consequential, pop culture face-off that caused division through the hallways of early-1990s schools everywhere: Grease or Grease 2?

The original high school musical, Grease, premiered for Paramount Pictures in the summer of 1978. Now more than 40 years later, the Grease spinoff will premiere for Paramount’s streaming descendent Paramount+.

According to Variety, the previously announced Grease spinoff, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, will be moving to Paramount+ from HBO Max. Paramount+ is the new streaming brand from ViacomCBS, which will be taking over for CBS All Access next year. HBO Max is the recently launched streaming concept from WarnerMedia. The news comes almost a year to the day after the spinoff was originally announced.

The move appears to be a natural fit as Paramount Television Studios is the studio behind the project to begin with. Per Variety, HBO Max decided to move on from the series after WarnerMedia Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt left the conglomerate and HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys took over decision-making for HBO and HBO Max.

The “Grease” spinoff series is go, go, going somewhere else.

Paramount Plus, the recently announced ViacomCBS streaming platform, has nabbed the show from HBO Max and rebranded it as “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” Variety has learned exclusively from sources. News of the move comes almost exactly a year to the day after the show, a spinoff of the classic John Travolta and Olivia Newton John movie from 1978, was handed a straight-to-series order by the WarnerMedia streamer.

For “Grease” fans screaming tell me more, tell me more, “Rise of the Pink Ladies” is an hour-long musical comedy about how the infamous Pink Ladies began and how the reverence, fear, and moral panic they sparked changed Rydell High forever. Paramount’s plan to tell you more, tell you more about the crucial amorous 1950s-set teen backstory to its iconic 1978 musical, Grease, appears to be coming to fruition. The project, a prequel movie titled Summer Lovin’, went into development last year and has just procured a director in Brett Haley.

Summer Lovin’ is officially moving forward with Haley in the director’s chair, reports Deadline. A surging indie talent for whom the film will serve as a potential mainstream breakthrough, Haley will work off a script by Leah McKendrick, a surging talent poised to break out in her own right. They will be joined here by producers in Temple Hill and Picturestart. Interestingly, the report points to studio enthusiasm strong enough for the project to serve as a potential franchise-launcher.

John Travolta still has an incredible amount of love for his former Grease costar, Olivia Newton-John.

On Thursday, the 65-year-old actor was at the red carpet premiere for his new film The Fanatic when he was asked about Newton-John, who has spent the past few years facing cancer.

“She looks incredible,” Travolta told Entertainment Tonight at the event, held at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre. “She doesn’t look any different than [she did] years ago, and I’m very proud of her.”

Of course, if you thought these conspiracies were a little too dark for your tastes, you might be pleased to hear they are exactly that.  You heard right. After all that Internet hoo-ha, the fan theories have been debunked by none other than Grease co-creator, Jim Jacobs. TMZ notes, when he wrote the book and musical with Warren Casey, they never intended for the story to be a "drowning woman's coma fantasy," like Reddit boldly suggested. Likewise, Sandy never drowned when she and Danny met on the beach, and it doesn't look like this was a dying Danny's...

Jim Jacobs, the man who co-wrote the musical Grease with Warren Casey 45 years ago, is today denying rumors that their play—and, by extension, its film adaptation—takes place in a character’s head as her brain is slowly robbed of oxygen moments just before her death, TMZ reports.

The remarkably well-founded theory was originally posited in an Imgur post three years ago—and popularized by actress Sarah Michelle Gellar in a recent Facebook post—which correctly pointed out that Sandy and Danny’s car flying off into the sky at the end of the movie defies the laws of physics. Over the past few years, NBC has started an annual tradition of airing a live musical every year during the holiday season. This year, Fox is starting a tradition of its own with the 3-hour live musical special Grease: Live, which aired last night. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the show was a bona fide hit, attracting 12.2 million viewers, a higher figure than NBC's last two live musicals.

NBC's first musical special, The Sound of Music Live, was a ratings juggernaut in late 2013, attracting a whopping 18.3 million viewers and scoring an impressive 4.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic. The network's next musical, 2014's Peter Pan Live!, shed more than half of The Sound of Music Live's audience, with 9.1 million viewers and a 2.3 rating, but December's The Wiz Live! rebounded slightly with 11.5 million viewers and a 3.5 rating.

NBC's "Peter Pan Live!" may not have been a smash, but Fox's previously announced "Grease: Live" is still moving forward with both a premiere date and pair of female leads. Fox announced on Saturday (January 17) that Julianne Hough and Vanessa Hudgens will take key roles in "Grease: Live," which will be based on both the original musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, but also the 1978 feature adaptation. "Grease: Live" will air on Fox on Sunday, January 31, 2016. So yes, that's a long time for Hough, Hudgens and the yet-to-be-announced castmembers to get prepared. Blurbs executive producer Marc Platt, "'Grease' is one of the most treasured and favored pop culture phenomenons of our time. It's fun, it's endearing and we are so excited to reimagine this iconic story with a shared entertainment event suited for today's audience." Hough will play the lead role of Sandy, virginal new girl at Rydell High.

NBC isn't the only network that wants to stage live musicals.

Now Fox is scheduling a live performance of Grease and has cast Julianne Hough as the angelic Sandy.

Shana C. Waterman, the network's Svp Event Series, said that the 1971 Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs's Broadway musical's iconic characters and songs make it a perfect fit for the network, Deadline.com reported.
