When we talk about the most prolific television creators and writers, the same names often come up: Ryan Murphy, Shonda Rhimes, Dick Wolf, Taylor Sheridan, and more of the most popular and profitable names of the moment. But there's someone who's often left out of those conversations despite being responsible for some of the biggest, most beloved shows in pop culture history. Of course, that someone is none other than primetime soap and rom-com mastermind Darren Star!
Not only did Star help reinvent and popularize teen dramas on the small screen with the '90s phenomenon Beverly Hills, 90210, but he has continuously centered women in their own stories about their lives, careers, and sexuality — important stories that have remained vital parts of our own lives. The industry’s intimacy coordinators have spoken: They want to unionize with SAG-AFTRA.
In a National Labor Relations Board ballot count on Tuesday, all participating intimacy coordinators voted to join the 160,000-member performers’ union, SAG-AFTRA announced on Tuesday. Information as to how many intimacy coordinators participated in the election was not available as of press time.
“In these sobering times with looming threats to environmental protections and women’s equality, it is refreshing to see the entertainment industry’s recognition of intimacy coordinators and their important contribution to productions and to performers in intimate scenes,” union president Fran Drescher said in a statement. “We at SAG-AFTRA are proud to include this esteemed group of trained professionals as the newest to join our member body.”

Arguably one of the most beloved 90s TV shows was Beverly Hills, 90210. The teen-centered series ended over 20 years ago, yet fans still crave to see the cast get together. And while the entire group didn’t reunite, a few of the show’s stars just reconnected. Read on to find out what happened.
Tori Spelling’s 90210 Reunion
Tori Spelling recently took to social media to share a photo with some of her 90210 former co-stars. Specifically, she shared a picture with Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering. This is fresh out out the actress’ elimination from DWTS Season 33.
It wasn’t a random meetup between the three stars. The Hollywood Show hosted a fan event where people had a chance to meet them and take photos. Nonetheless, they all seemed happy to have an excuse to be together again.

After years of work to make intimacy coordinators an industry standard in film and television, SAG-AFTRA has filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to be the official union reps for all intimacy coordinators in negotiations with major studios.
“Working in scenes involving nudity or physical intimacy is some of the most vulnerable work an actor can do. Intimacy coordinators not only provide assistance in navigating these scenes, but they also create a safety net for performers ensuring consent and protection throughout the entire process,” SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher said in a Wednesday statement.
“Shifting the power imbalance that has been ingrained over a century is challenging but important work. Work that can be done even more effectively with the backing of a union,” she continued. “Intimacy coordinators have our backs on set and now it’s our turn to have theirs.”

Jennie Garth is finally opening up about how not being able to say ‘no’ made her appear on a show she regrets.
However, Garth wasn’t the only one who bottled up her personal feelings about the show to please some people. Here’s every hot tea that was spilled during the reunion.
The thing is, we’re in the era of reboots and sequels, remakes and revivals – if the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ can get rebooted, everything can. Some reboots have worked, some have failed, and others have been mildly successful.
Just because something was beloved by fans at one point, does that mean we need it for a new generation? Now there’s a HBO ‘Harry Potter’ series in the works, and it better be worth my time.
Speaking of something being worth somebody’s time, starring in ‘CW’s 90210’ reboot was definitely not worth Jennie Garth’s time.

The actors in The Vampire Diaries had significant age gaps from their characters, particularly the vampires. Some actors started playing roles that were far younger than their actual age, like Sara Canning as Aunt Jenna. The age differences between actors and characters were largely unnoticed and did not impact the success of the series.
The show may have ended in 2017 but some fans still wonder, "How old was Nina Dobrev in The Vampire Diaries?" The CW had its fair share of successful supernatural shows over the years. However, The Vampire Diaries set the stage in 2009, introducing some great characters played by actors early in their careers. From Nina Dobrev coming into the series at 20 years old and playing a 17-year-old to Ian Somerhalder at the age of 30 but playing a 25-year-old, the series' actors and characters they portrayed were far off in age, especially the vampires.

Following the news that Shannen Doherty died on Saturday after a nine-year cancer battle at age 53, her Beverly Hills, 90210 co-stars are paying tribute to their late friend on social media.
The 1988 cult classic Heathers gave Doherty her first major role. But it was 90210 that turned her into a star. She was cast on Aaron Spelling’s teen drama in 1990 as Brenda Walsh and remained on the show until 1994.
While friction with her castmates amid her divorce from Ashley Hamilton is partially what caused her exit from the series, her former co-stars detailed their decades-long friendship with Doherty following her passing, shedding light into their dynamic with the actress during her final years.

Shannen Doherty refused to slow down.
Late last year, the actress launched a memoir-style podcast, Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty, a vehicle which she used to inspire others. In an interview about it with People, she remained defiant.
“I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating. I’m not done with hopefully changing things for the better,” she said. “I’m just not — I’m not done.”
Yesterday, her journey came to an end, and her friends in Hollywood took to social media to remember the spirit she showed.

Luke Perry left Beverly Hills, 90210 to seek more mature roles after playing Dylan McKay for five full seasons. Perry returned to the show in season 9 after those roles failed to come to fruition. If he hadn't returned to the show and made peace with Dylan, he might not have had the career that he did.
There are very specific reasons for Luke Perry's Beverly Hills, 90210 exit and his subsequent return just three years later. Perry starred in the long-running teen drama, which lasted for ten seasons between 1990 and 2000, as Dylan McKay, the brooding bad boy with a heart of gold. "Beverly Hills, 90210" was a landmark TV show that spoke to an entire generation of teen viewers and lasted for 10 seasons from 1990-2000. The spin-off series "Melrose Place" ran for seven seasons from 1992-1999 and focused on a group of young adults living in an apartment complex in West Hollywood. "BH90210" was a meta-revival of the original show that followed the original cast members as they navigate the decision to reboot the series and confront the challenges of aging in Hollywood.
Created by Darren Star and produced by Aaron Spelling, Beverly Hills, 90210 remains one of the most popular teen dramas in TV history. Speaking to CNN on Thursday, shortly after SAG-AFTRA announced it had made its historic deal ending the actors strike, SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher told CNN Anchor Kate Bolduan the union’s success had “ignited a workers movement around the world.”
Reports of the 118-day walkout were headline news from Spain to Seoul and from London, Ontario to London, England. Unions representing actors and other entertainment professionals largely stood in solidarity with their American counterparts and were quick to congratulate SAG-AFTRA when they secured a new, tentative three-year agreement. Many are also looking stateside for inspiration in their own labor battles.
“We are immensely proud of SAG-AFTRA for taking on this incredible fight for all performers around the world,” said Gabrielle Carteris, the former SAG-AFTRA president who now heads up the International Federation of Actors (Fia), a global federation of performers’ trade unions and guilds representing hundreds of thousands of performers in more than 60 countries worldwide.

The International Federation of Actors (Fia) has praised SAG-AFTRA for taking on an “incredible fight for all performers around the world.
Hollywood is in celebration mode after actors union SAG and the studios struck a tentative new three-year deal, which effectively began on Thursday, and the good vibes are spreading beyond U.S. borders.
The Brussels-based Fia, which represents hundreds of thousands of performers from around 90 member organizations in more than 60 countries, said the deal “establishes a landmark standard that will have a lasting impact across generations, particularly with respect to how actors are to be rewarded for the streaming of their performances and protected against the abusive use of AI.”
Many unions and their countries’ networks and streamers are having similar discussions over residuals, AI and other issues, and the U.S. agreement is widely seen as a blueprint to take forwards.

SAG-AFTRA’s top negotiator has never done this before.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland has worked for the union for most of his adult life. In that time, he has become a master of the details. He taught himself Spanish to work on an international treaty on intellectual property. Then he bargained with Telemundo, switching between Spanish and English to hammer out the first U.S. labor contract for telenovela actors.
But until this year, he had never led contract negotiations with the major film and TV studios. As it turned out, his first year at the helm was also the first that SAG-AFTRA went on strike on that contract in 43 years. As a result, Crabtree-Ireland has had to grow into a new public role.

More than 3,600 SAG-AFTRA members have signed an open letter declaring they would rather stay on strike than “cave” to a bad deal. The hardline group, which calls itself Members in Solidarity, includes actors Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jon Hamm, Maya Hawke, Marisa Tomei, John Leguizamo and Bryan Cranston, among many other famous names. Their letter expresses support for the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee and says that it speaks for the majority of the guild who “are still standing in solidarity, ready to strike as long as it takes and to endure whatever we must in order to win a deal that is worthy of our collective sacrifice”. It comes as SAG-AFTRA has been on strike for more than 100 days, bringing almost all scripted film and TV production in North America to a standstill. The power of a single vote was on full display yesterday in Nashville, where actor and stuntman Bill “Bilbro” Yarbrough defeated his nearest rival by a single vote to win a seat on the guild’s national board of directors.
The voting there also shows the power of apathy, with only 213 (15%) of the Nashville local’s 1,422 eligible members casting ballots. Yarbrough defeated Bob Bailey, his nearest rival, by a vote of 78 to 77. A third candidate, Evans Donnell, received 56 votes.
Yarbrough is now the first candidate elected to the national board as part of the dissident faction led by Maya Gilbert-Dunbar, who’s running against incumbent president Fran Drescher. Peter Antico, Gilbert-Dunbar’s running mate, is squaring off against incumbent secretary-treasurer Joely Fisher.

During a recent episode of the rewatch podcast 90210Mg, hosts Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling opened up about Shannen Doherty's exit from Beverly Hills, 90210. When the hit series premiered in 1990, Doherty portrayed Brenda Walsh, a teenager relocating with her twin brother Brandon (portrayed by Brandon Walsh) and parents (James Eckhouse and Carol Potter), from Minnesota to the affluent zip code; Garth and Spelling starred as best friends Kelly Taylor and Donna Martin. Following poor ratings during its first season, the series gained momentum after Fox aired a summer season. Beverly Hills, 90210 went on to become a huge success for the network, and catapulted much of its cast, including Doherty, Spelling, Garth, Luke Perry and Jason Priestley, into super stardom.

It’s the spotlight Fran Drescher turned out, unexpectedly, to be born for.
Speaking at a press conference announcing the actors strike Thursday, the SAG-AFTRA president, still known best for her winsome and haphazardly charming protagonist of the sitcom “The Nanny,” looked stricken. Speaking at first deliberately and then with increasing passion, Drescher narrated her union’s attempt, initially, to avoid a strike, and then what she cast as the dawning realization that action was required.
It was a performance with build and emotional heft, culminating in an appeal to labor across the world: “This is a moment of history that is a moment of truth,” she declared — and if that reads a bit awkwardly on the page, well, you should have heard how she delivered it. She continued to excoriate “big business, who care more about Wall Street than you and your family.” On “you,” she gestured out into the audience; on “your family,...

Hollywood is in a state of crisis as the writers and stars of movies and television shows fight for their rights against big studios. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike began on May 2, 2023, after the guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed to reach an agreement concerning their new contract. The old collective bargaining agreement expired on May 1, so the WGA voted to unanimously strike the following day, and the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) is expected to follow in the writers' footsteps.
SAG-aftra's contract with AMPTP expired at midnight on July 13 — just a couple of months following WGA's collective bargaining agreement expiration. AMPTP represents notable studios like Netflix, Sony Pictures, Paramount Global, the Walt Disney Company, and many others, and many factors go into negotiations between AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA. We would still trust Andrea Zuckerman to edit a newspaper, but after watching Monday’s 9-1-1 premiere, we’d be less confident letting her pilot an aircraft.
Gabrielle Carteris guest-starred as the co-pilot of a blimp that crashed into a stadium full of soccer fans — all to the tune of Panic! At the Disco’s “High Hopes,” because of course. And just like that, the 118 did what the 118 does, springing into action to rescue the pilots as well as the panicked crowd. Athena even got to fill in as a part-time heart surgeon, which is always a fun surprise.

9-1-1 is kicking off its sixth season with a major disaster — a blimp! — and with one of the 118’s own in some serious trouble. The new trailer for the Fox first responder drama offers a look at some of the calls the firefighters, paramedics, and police officers will be dealing with, as well as a look at Beverly Hills, 90210‘s Gabrielle Carteris as one of the blimp captains. Jack Zeman /Fox The video offers a look at Sergeant Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) trying to calm everyone down in the middle of the emergency (much easier said than done) as well as Captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) taking control and giving out orders. But what really has us worried: Henrietta “Hen” Wilson (Aisha Hinds) saying “Losing someone out there is never easy,” and Athena yelling for Bobby. Watch it above. That blimp disaster certainly seems to look like exactly what...

Netflix Studios and SAG-AFTRA have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract, Variety has confirmed.
The contract will be a successor to the three-year deal that the streamer and union signed in 2019, which was approved upon by SAG-AFTRA’s national board without ratification by union membership. Prior to the contract, Netflix signed agreements with the union on a production-by-production basis, and used the union’s codified agreement and television agreements as a template.
The 2019 deal was set at the time to expire June 30, but was extended to July 31 as Netflix and SAG-AFTRA agreed to extend negotiations. The deal between Netflix and SAG-AFTRA will be reviewed at the SAG-AFTRA national board’s next meeting, which is scheduled for next Monday.
Details of what the successor contract looks like will not be released until after the board’s review, according to SAG-AFTRA.

SAG-AFTRA and Netflix have reached a tentative deal on a new contract to replace the novel agreement they penned in 2019.
The performers’ union announced the tentative deal — which will now go to the union’s National Board and, later, to members for approval — on Tuesday. The National Board will next meet and discuss the agreement on August 8. No other details were available about the pact at this time. The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Netflix for comment.
Earlier this summer, the SAG-aftra-Netflix deal was extended until Sunday, July 31.
The original 2019 Netflix deal split the streamer off from the contracts that major studios negotiate under the auspices of negotiating body the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) with SAG-AFTRA. The streamer-specific agreement covered live-action scripted production, incorporated dubbing and performance capture and was called “groundbreaking” by then-union president Gabrielle Carteris. A federal judge has dismissed Frances Fisher’s lawsuit against SAG-AFTRA, in which the actress accused the union and several of its former and current leaders of breaching their duty of fair representation over the raising of eligibility requirements for coverage under the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan
. U.S. District Court Judge Christina Snyder dismissed the suit with prejudice Thursday, meaning that Fisher and her co-plaintiffs cannot refile it. Snyder previously has dismissed the suit without prejudice and allowed Fisher to file an amended complaint.
Fisher, who is first vice president of the union’s Los Angeles Local and a member of its national board of directors, named former SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris, national executive director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, former national executive director David White, chief contracts officer Ray Rodriguez and several other SAG-AFTRA officials as defendants. At the 61st Monte-Carlo Television Festival, Jason Priestley looked back at the success of ’90s teen soap “Beverly Hills, 90210,” and explained why the 2019 reboot “BH90210” got canceled by Fox after one season.
“BH90210” was described by Variety as a “soapy parody” that gave “the actors behind our favorite characters the space to play versions of themselves while poking fun at the public personas, rabid fans and roles that made them famous.” It saw original series cast members Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, Tori Spelling and Shannen Doherty playing heightened versions of themselves, rather than their original characters. But it was a high stakes gamble that ultimately didn’t pay off, said the North Vancouver native.
“We tried something with that show. It was a risky premise to build a show around. It was a real high-wire act to pull that show off, if we...

The agreement’s provisions reflect changes in the industry in the age of digital streaming, according to a press release. They include 120 million in gains for members, a 10 increase in session fees starting this year, flat-fee, per-cycle rates across most digital and traditional media, hair and makeup equity protections for diverse members, new standards for nude or partially nude work, clear boundaries for self-tape auditions, increased contributions to the SAG-AFTRA health plan and new compensation for digital use alongside an employer-paid fund.
“We did it! An overwhelming majority of members agreed on the new Commercials Contracts,” said SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher. “As we move into a digital age, bold moves and structural changes had to be made. SAG-AFTRA members have overwhelmingly voted to ratify a new 1 billion-a-year set of commercials contracts that the union says is valued at an additional 120 million for members over the three-year span of the contracts.
The vote, which was 92,25 in favor, was in line with last month’s vote of the national board (93 in favor) to recommend membership ratification. The new contracts were hammered out over an eight-week bargaining span with the Joint Policy Committee of the advertising industry.

The We Own This City series on HBO was written by David Simon and George Pelecanos who also worked on The Wire TV show together. While that beloved Baltimore-based series ran for five seasons, We Own This City appears to have been designed as a single-season mini-series of six episodes. However, if it's successful enough, could this new show still be renewed for a second season? Could there be more story to tell? Stay tuned.
