The industry’s intimacy coordinators have spoken: They want to unionize with SAG-AFTRA.

In a National Labor Relations Board ballot count on Tuesday, all participating intimacy coordinators voted to join the 160,000-member performers’ union, SAG-AFTRA announced on Tuesday. Information as to how many intimacy coordinators participated in the election was not available as of press time.

“In these sobering times with looming threats to environmental protections and women’s equality, it is refreshing to see the entertainment industry’s recognition of intimacy coordinators and their important contribution to productions and to performers in intimate scenes,” union president Fran Drescher said in a statement. “We at SAG-AFTRA are proud to include this esteemed group of trained professionals as the newest to join our member body.”

The actress, who reprised her role as Kelly Taylor in 90210, which ran from 2008 to 2013, shared that she regretted participating in the remake during a recent panel at ’90s Con in Florida. “I wish I hadn’t done it. No offense to them,” she said, via People.

At a ’90s convention in Tampa, Florida, Beverly Hills 90210 star Shannen Doherty was given a standing ovation. The actress, 52, is currently battling stage 4 breast cancer.

Joined by her co-stars Tori Spelling, Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris and Brian Austin Green, Doherty received huge support from the audience and her cast mates.

“Shannen, I know I speak on behalf of this crew, on behalf of all of these people, how happy we are to see you here,” Breanne Heldman, the panel moderator, said before the rupture of applause filled the room. Heldman said she “felt the love” on stage between the castmates.

“Thank you so much. You guys know how much I love crying constantly. And I do, it seems. So, thank you,” Doherty said. “I have a fight for my life, that I deal with every day. I think I am really great.”

The power of a single vote was on full display yesterday in Nashville, where actor and stuntman Bill “Bilbro” Yarbrough defeated his nearest rival by a single vote to win a seat on the guild’s national board of directors.

The voting there also shows the power of apathy, with only 213 (15%) of the Nashville local’s 1,422 eligible members casting ballots. Yarbrough defeated Bob Bailey, his nearest rival, by a vote of 78 to 77. A third candidate, Evans Donnell, received 56 votes.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike began on May 2, 2023, after the guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed to reach an agreement concerning their new contract. Netflix Studios and SAG-AFTRA have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract, Variety has confirmed.

The contract will be a successor to the three-year deal that the streamer and union signed in 2019, which was approved upon by SAG-AFTRA’s national board without ratification by union membership. Prior to the contract, Netflix signed agreements with the union on a production-by-production basis, and used the union’s codified agreement and television agreements as a template.

The 2019 deal was set at the time to expire June 30, but was extended to July 31 as Netflix and SAG-AFTRA agreed to extend negotiations. The deal between Netflix and SAG-AFTRA will be reviewed at the SAG-AFTRA national board’s next meeting, which is scheduled for next Monday. Details of what the successor contract looks like will not be released until after the board’s review, according to SAG-AFTRA.

SAG-AFTRA and Netflix have reached a tentative deal on a new contract to replace the novel agreement they penned in 2019.

The performers’ union announced the tentative deal — which will now go to the union’s National Board and, later, to members for approval — on Tuesday. The National Board will next meet and discuss the agreement on August 8. No other details were available about the pact at this time. The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Netflix for comment.

Earlier this summer, the SAG-aftra-Netflix deal was extended until Sunday, July 31.

The original 2019 Netflix deal split the streamer off from the contracts that major studios negotiate under the auspices of negotiating body the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) with SAG-AFTRA. A federal judge has dismissed Frances Fisher’s lawsuit against SAG-AFTRA, in which the actress accused the union and several of its former and current leaders of breaching their duty of fair representation over the raising of eligibility requirements for coverage under the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan

The agreement’s provisions reflect changes in the industry in the age of digital streaming, according to a press release. They include 120 million in gains for members, a 10 increase in session fees starting this year, flat-fee, per-cycle rates across most digital and traditional media, hair and makeup equity protections for diverse members, new standards for nude or partially nude work, clear boundaries for self-tape auditions, increased contributions to the SAG-AFTRA health plan and new compensation for digital use alongside an employer-paid fund.

SAG-AFTRA members have overwhelmingly voted to ratify a new 1 billion-a-year set of commercials contracts that the union says is valued at an additional 120 million for members over the three-year span of the contracts.
