Last year, Synapse Films and Red Shirt Home Video teamed up to bring us a deluxe edition Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release of the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies. Now Synapse and Red Shirt have announced that they’ll also be giving the deluxe edition treatment to the 1988 vampire sequel Fright Night Part 2! A lot of fans have resorted to buying bootlegs just to have a good copy of this movie on DVD, but now it’s getting an official 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release. According to Red Shirt’s Michael Felsher, it’s likely to be released sometime in 2026.
Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, who takes over from the first film’s Tom Holland, and scripted by Tim Metcalfe, Miguel Tejada-Flores, and Wallace, Fright Night Part 2 features young Charley Brewer, fresh out of a psychiatric hospital, and the...

After working their magic to bring Trick or Treat to 4K Ultra HD, Red Shirt Pictures and Synapse Films have announced six upcoming titles in the works.
The releases include: Fright Night Part II, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, Prom Night III: The Last Kiss, Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil, 976-Evil II, and Angel of H.E.A.T.
“There are no release dates for any of these titles at this time,” Synapse writes, noting that Fright Night Part II will not be out in 2025.
“We can’t even say ‘Still in production. No release date.’ because several of them have not started production yet! Just as it was with Trick or Treat, Red Shirt Pictures will be overseeing the production of each release, while Synapse will oversee the audio/video and distribution of each title, all of which will be in production throughout 2025 and into 2026.”

Creatures in In the Mouth of Madness surprised VFX artists for being barely visible on-screen despite their intricate designs. Corridor Crew noted the impressive prosthetics work on creatures like the soggy mummy, which was only seen for two frames in the movie. The Lovecraftian film may have benefited from showing more monsters, considering the effort put into their creation.
John Carpenters Lovecraftian horror film In the Mouth of Madness surprises VFX artists for one major reason. The 1994 movie follows John Trent (Sam Neill), an insurance investigator who recounts strange activity in Hobbs End, New Hampshire, and its connection to novelist Sutter Cane. Along with Neill, the cast includes Jrgen Prochnow, Julie Carmen, David Warner, John Glover, and Charlton Heston. Despite an underwhelming theatrical release, In the Mouth of Madness assembled a strong fanbase and is considered one of Carpenters most underappreciated movies, featuring some memorable creature designs.

If you’ve been keeping up with The Test of Time, you have probably learned what the rules are in terms of what we tackle. Those rules, of course, are that there are no rules whatsoever and we cover whatever sounds good or we think would be an interesting topic. In the Mouth of Madness (watch it Here) came out in Italy in late 1994 and that means, gulp, that movie is now 30 years old. It came during an interesting time in the master of horrors career when he was running flop after flop and being disappointed by studios interference and stars that weren’t willing to be true collaborators. It’s the ending of a loose trilogy and in some people’s estimation his last great film. Is In the Mouth of Madness a tale that stands the Test of Time, or should it be put in the bargain bin...

With all due respect to the vampire western Near Dark and the coolness of The Lost Boys, my favorite ’80s vampire flick is pretty easily Fright Night (watch it Here). It has a way about it that is just unmatched. It’s able to mix the ’80s setting, think Jerry in the club hypnotizing Amy, with both a modern and classic feel. Its almost the evolutionary step of what Hammer films would have turned into had they not folded. Its certainly beloved enough with it’s own documentary and a sequel, remake, and sequel to that remake. That’s what I wanted to talk about today. While Near Dark got no sequel, probably for the best, and The Lost Boys got multiple awful sequels,...

Tales of the Walking Dead wrapped up its first season Sunday with a trippy episode that focused on a young couple claiming a house as their own after its owner dies.
Thanks to some ghostly occurrences, it quickly became a battle for survival.
Danny Ramirez, who played Eric, is no stranger to the franchise.
Ramirez revealed that he did 10 sessions for Telltale's The Walking Dead videogame.
He was set to play Javier.
"I played Javier before they aged him up," Ramirez said with a laugh.
"I had been in the world for a moment," he said, before revealing that working on Tales of the Walking Dead felt like a redemption arc for him.
Danny liked that his episode was unattached to anything else in The Walking Dead universe.

For the season finale of the first “The Walking Dead” anthology series, “Tales of the Walking Dead” delivers an unexpected supernatural haunted house story set amidst the zombie apocalypse. Directed by Deborah Kampmeier (“Clarice”), “La Doña” follows a survivor couple – Eric (Danny Ramirez) and Idalia (Daniella Pineda) – as they make an eerie, candle-lit home their new place of sanctuary away from the undead. With the shambling corpses of the outside-world at bay, the duo must face off against a new set of horrors nestled within their humble abode.
“La Doña,” which translates to “The Lady,” makes use of cultural elements to set the scene for its chilling main location. Candles, crosses, Jesus statues, and other spiritual objects line every nook and cranny of the episode’s setting. Aside from Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), the world of “The Walking Dead” hasn’t explored many other cultural and religious reactions to the rising of the dead.

Episode six of AMC’s Tales of the Walking Dead, the final episode of season one, opens with a couple standing in the dark. They’re in the woods and eerie screams and creepy whispers can be heard as they take off running.
Daylight arrives and the woman, Idalia (Daniella Pineda), makes note that Maria (a zombie) is still following them. She thinks she knows where they are and may know of a place they can stay, but just for the night. Eric (Danny Ramirez) wonders why they’d only stay one night and Idalia explains the woman who lives there is kind of a healer. She’s into spells and other mystical stuff.
It’s dark by the time they arrive at a gate surrounded by tall walls.

In addition to this, a Groundhog Day episode saw one duo having to relive the same day over and over again in order to get things right.

Gena Rowlands is electric as a tough New York ex- gangland moll who finds that her maternal instincts make her deadlier than the male. John Cassavetes’ commercial crowd-pleaser is also a smart, sassy gangland mini-classic.

John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness is a gem from his mid-’90s filmography that is not to be missed. The upcoming Collector's Edition Blu-ray, due out on July 24th, is packed with extras, including new features that take you through the film's locations, interviews with John Carpenter and the cast, as well as special effects creator Greg Nicotero, audio commentary with the cinematographer Gary B. Kibbe, and much more. We have a look at four clips plus the trailer released by Scream Factory.
In the Mouth of Madness Collector's Edition Blu-ray: "When horror novelist Sutter Cane (Jürgen Prochnow) goes missing, insurance investigator John Trent (Sam Neill) scrutinizes the claim made by his publisher, Jackson Harglow (Charlton Heston), and endeavors to retrieve a yet-to-be-released manuscript and ascertain the writer's whereabouts. Accompanied by the novelist's editor, Linda Styles (Julie Carmen), and disturbed by nightmares from reading Cane's other novels,...

“Sometimes it’s fun to do something a little darker.”
It’s John Carpenter’s birthday this week, so of course we gave a listen to one of the few commentary tracks he’s done that we haven’t covered yet. (And now we know why.)
In the Mouth of Madness (1994)
Commentator: John Carpenter (director), Gary B. Kibbe (cinematographer)
1. Carpenter himself refers to this as the third film in his unofficial “Apocalypse Trilogy” which also includes The Thing and Prince of Darkness.
2. The opening credits sequence was filmed by the second-unit at a printing press in Toronto, Canada.
3. The asylum exterior/main hall is actually a water reclamation plant off Lake Ontario, while the basement cells were built on a set.
4. Sam Neill, who plays John Trent, was cut by broken glass in the scene where his cell door window is shattered. “He wasn’t too happy about it.”
5. Neill is apparently “the world’s biggest fan...

Yesterday afternoon, the ranks of Oscar voters grew substantially, with some welcome diversity added in for good measure. Yes, the Academy sent out invitations for new membership about 24 hours ago, with 683 names getting the coveted tap on the proverbial shoulder. Again, what made it so interesting to note is that AMPAS seemed to actively seek out women, minorities, and younger artists, hoping to make the demographics of the Academy slightly less centered on older white males. It won’t suddenly change the makeup of the Oscar nominations or upend how the Academy Awards go down next year, but it’s a slow step in the right direction, and that’s worth applauding for sure. As you can see below, in addition to basically all of last year’s Oscar winners, the new members are a diverse slate. Among the names you’ll see in the acting branch now are John Boyega,...

“Introducing the Academy class of 2016,” reads the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences website announcement of its invited new members Wednesday. And while joining that august organization is a singular honor, many say they were surprised to learn of their inclusion — mainly because they hadn’t applied for membership. Traditionally, that’s a laborious process that can take years before you get recommended by peers, vetted by your branch, and finally invited. Every year it’s a shock that someone like, say Tina Fey, IFC’s Arianna Bocco, last year’s Oscar-winner Margaret Sixel (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), or Oscar marketer Lisa Taback, wasn’t already a member.

In a padded cell adorned with crudely drawn crosses resides John Trent. Trent has gone so far as to not only decorate his new insane asylum home with crosses but himself as well — they run up and down his mental patient uniform and dance across his very face. Outside the asylum, the world is going to hell, and John Trent knows it. When the kindly Dr. Wrenn comes to talk with Trent, Trent tells him the cold hard truth: “Every species can smell its own extinction.”
Thus begins In the Mouth of Madness, the third and final film in director John Carpenter’s “Apocalypse Trilogy.” The trilogy contained his films The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and this film, released in 1995. The three movies are, according to Carpenter, “in one way or another, about the end of things, about the end of everything, the world we know, but in different ways.

Directed by Daniel Petrie Jr., "Dawn Patrol" marks the return to the big screen of one of the most important Latino talents of the past few decades, Julie Carmen.
Scott Eastwood stars as a young surfer-turned-Marine who must confront the consequences of his terrible decisions. In her "Dawn Patrol" portrayal as the enigmatic Laura River, Julie Carmen holds Scott Eastwood hostage as he recalls the twists and turns of how and why he murdered her son. Throughout the film they give alternate Rashomon-like accounts exposing the xenophobia and racism that rips a remote, multicultural surf city apart. Laura explodes with the rage and confusion of a mother confronting her child's killer, and plots a haunting, lasting revenge.
"I was directed in a style inspired by Latin American magical realism and that contrasts with how Scott Eastwood, Rita Wilson, Jeff Fahey, Kim Matula, and Chris Borchu tell their story, in an ultra realistic way. " said Julie Carmen about working on "Dawn Patrol.
"During times such as ours, we need movies like 'Dawn Patrol' to dissect the consequences of killing rather than just use death as a plot point. We're hoping to open a dialogue about xenophobia, racism, revenge and misogyny, which are dealt with head on. There are four fabulous female roles, all broken by violence but my character carries the rage." she concluded.
Alchemy will release the film in select theaters on June 5th and it'll hit iTunes a couple weeks after the theatrical release...

In a laughable scene in Dawn Patrol, John (Scott Eastwood) passes a joint to his brother (Chris Brochu) while riding a skateboard, and director Daniel Petrie Jr. stages the moment in drawn-out slow motion, as if he expected it to appear as a SportsCenter highlight. This kind of tacky, on-the-nose treatment is representative of Petrie’s choices throughout the movie — though, in his defense, the screenplay he’s working from (co-written by Rachel Long and Brian Pittman) is a mess in its own right.
Following a clumsy opening in which John, clad in Marine clothing, recounts his story to a woman (Julie Carmen) as she holds him at gunpoint, the movie flashes back to the summer of 2008. Petrie takes his time detailing the habits of John’s bea...

Do you read Sutter Cane? Merely weeks ago I was hunting around the attic for my VHS copy of John Carpenter's often forgotten horror classic 'In the Mouth of Madness' to enjoy. Why? Well, because it's not available here in the UK on DVD or Blu-ray. But perhaps with the news today that the 1995 flick starring Sam Neill ('Jurassic Park'), Julie Carmen, David Warner ('The Omen') and Charlton Heston ('Planet of the Apes') will be finally making an appearance on Blu-ray across the Us from 15 October this will hopefully mean a short wait before we see it hop across the pond and land on UK shelves. No word as yet on special features or artwork but these will be revealed nearer release....

Scream Factory will be releasing John Carpenter’s The Fog, Body Bags, and Prince of Darkness on Blu-ray this year and Warner Bros. is joining in on the fun by releasing In the Mouth of Madness on Blu-ray as well. At this time, a list of bonus features has not been revealed, but we know that the movie will be hitting shelves on October 15th.
“Best-selling author and Stephen King contemporary Sutter Cane’s newest novel is literally driving his readers insane. When the author inexplicably vanishes, an insurance investigator named John Trent (Sam Neill) is hired by Arcane Publishing director Jackson Harglow (Charlton Heston) to track the author down. But Trent, along with Cane’s editor Linda Styles (Julie Carmen), soon finds himself crossing the barrier between fact and fiction, and entering a terrifying world of evil and madness from which there is no escape.”

Fright Night Vampires are bloodsuckers who are out for one thing and one thing only - your blood! Yet there is something so erotic, at times, about a vampire. I am sure there is plenty of women and, yes, men who would let either Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise or Antonio Banderas from Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles have a little drinky drinky from their neck. Horror fans don't kill me for saying this, but I am sure there is plenty of teenage girls who would let Robert Pattinson of the Twilight series have a little sip. On the female side of things, you have Kate Beckinsale from the Underworld series. Or you have Julie Carmen who turned in a sultry performance in Fright Night: Part II. Heck, poor little Charlie Brewster (William Ragsdale) was so weak to her advances that he gave in and let her turn him into a vampire.

For this week's request we're going back to 1995 for John Carpenter's atmospheric mind-bender In the Mouth of Madness starring Sam Neill in one of his most memorable performances. This film was the 3rd entry in what Carpenter calls his Apocalypse Trilogy along with The Thing (1982) and Prince of Darkness (1987). It's definitely reminiscent of The Thing with it's amazing creature effects, but what sets this film apart is the sheer abundance of assorted horrors. Being set in a town that doesn't really exist gives Carpenter plenty of room to work his magic and boy does he take liberties.
The film opens with John Trent (Sam Neill) being committed to an asylum. He fights and pleads with the doctor and staff that he is not insane. A senior doctor arrives to analyze him and the story behind John's current condition begins to unfold in flashbacks. Turns...

Do you feel that? The world just got a lot less funny. Comedy icon and TV personality Soupy Sales (born Milton Supman) left us late yesterday at the age of 83, the Los Angeles Times reports. He'd spent the past week in a Bronx, NY hospital in steady decline after years of battling a variety of health issues. Sales leaves behind a great legacy and a large family, including Trudy Carson Sales, his wife of 29 years, two sons, a brother and four grandchildren. Our thoughts are with them all on this difficult day.
Sales was perhaps best known for his long-running sketch comedy TV series, which ran at varying times between 1959 and 1979. "The Soupy Sales Show" operated under several different names and locations during its on-again/off-again run, but it was always marked by a cast of wacky characters -- of both the human and puppet varieties -- notable guest celebrities (a varied list,...

Even though fans may have missed that screening, you'll have another opportunity to see the film at the 2009 Brooklyn International Film Festival this weekend and in limited release in theaters later this year.
Here's the synopsis for the film...
"'Falling Awake' is the powerful story of Jay (Andrew Cisneros), a young man struggling to find his identity in The Bronx in a house crowded with family members and a neighborhood filled with loyal friends and dangerous enemies. A gifted musician, Jay hopes to leave it all and pursue his dream of composing and performing music. Once he meets Alessandra (Jenna Dewan), a beautiful...

Film review: 'King of the Jungle'

John Leguizamo, Rosie Perez, Marisa Tomei and the late Justin Pierce, all of whom appeared in New York indie filmmaker Seth Svi Rosenfeld's promising first film, "A Brother's Kiss", released three years ago by First Look, are fully submerged in the Upper West Side Hoi Polloi of the well-intentioned drama "King of the Jungle".
Showcased recently at Outfest and screening Saturday as part of the L.A. Latino fest at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, writer-director Rosenfeld's "Jungle" is as deadly serious but more accomplished than the downbeat "Kiss". Although the market for such fare currently is uninspiring, the cast and merits of this project should garner it limited exposure beyond the festival circuit.
A movie seemingly eager to take on controversial issues and show underrepresented people, "Jungle" centers on Leguizamo's gutsy portrayal of "mildly retarded" Seymour, who lives in an apartment with his politically active Latina mother, Mona (Julie Carmen). With a low IQ and the social skills of a child, friendly and adventuresome Seymour is easy to please and easy to frustrate.
One is pleased and sometimes frustrated to see the film so boldly paint the world around Seymour. Mona is a hothead with a lesbian girlfriend (Perez), and they are heavily involved in protesting police violence against minorities. At one such nighttime neighborhood rally, a cop is mysteriously gunned down, and Seymour is fatefully there to see the blood flow.
Seymour's unlikable father, Jack (Cliff Gorman), avoids his Knicks-loving son, but a rough outburst of violence from an unexpected source forever alters their worlds, and the two come together as a consequence. When Mona is shot dead by a sociopathic goon (Pierce) who resides with a stark femme fatale of a mother (Annabella Sciorra), Seymour is understandably fearful and seeks out street buddy Francis (Michael Rapaport), but there's not much he or anyone can really do to change a toxic world.
In one hellacious sequence at the police station, certainly a medium-mild condemnation of "New York's finest", Perez's distraught character is treated antagonistically by the cops, including a snappy detective (Tomei).
With fragments of memories confusing him constantly, punctuated with moments of clarity, Seymour is not about to avenge his mother. But in the climax, he does get a gun to cause alarm, and he gets to dribble and shoot at Madison Square Garden in an earlier episode (filmed during a real March 1999 NBA game).
In the retelling, "Jungle" is not airtight by a long shot, nor particularly memorable, but the multitalented Leguizamo suits up and plays his difficult character without a hitch. Carmen, Gorman and Perez are all excellent, while Sciorra and Pierce's freaky scenes together are confusingly cut short.
