It has just been announced that Re-Animator: The Musical will return for new performances in Hollywood this October with new performers and brand new songs:
““Re-Animator ™ the Musical” tells the story of Herbert West, a brilliant young medical student who has created a glowing green serum that can bring the dead back to life. What should be a medical breakthrough results in hideous monstrosities and ghastly consequences. “I guess he just wasn’t fresh enough,” is West’s constant refrain in his quest for fresh subjects. Graham Skipper, who won a Best New Performer Award at the New York Musical Theater Festival for his crowd-pleasing turn, returns as the demented young genius.
And operatic Jesse Merlin is back as Dr. Carl Hill who loses his head for Meg, the dean’s beautiful daughter, only to actually lose it at the hands of Herbert West. But thanks to the glowing re-agent,...

One of the best damned times we have had all year was spent seeing Re-Animator: The Musical on the stage in Los Angeles. It's a shame that the rest of the country is missing out on what is nothing short of a splattery good time; however, you can now at the very least get a sampling of the mayhem!
That's right, kids! Dig on a clip of the famed beheading scene below and pray this sucker comes to a town near you. If it does? Don't be a pussy! Sit in the splash zone!

Movie fans have long loved director Stuart Gordon's Re-Animator, renowned for its twisted sense of humor and copious gore. Now, this horror gem is gaining a whole new audience. Gordon has recently taken his 1985 cult classic and, ahem, re-animated it as Re-Animator: The Musical, a tune-filled stage production that's been packing them in since it opened in February.
Playing at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood, Re-Animator: The Musical is directed by Gordon and stars George Wendt, Graham Skipper, Chris L. McKenna, Rachel Avery, Cynthia Carle and Jesse Merlin. Originally booked to run through March 27, the show has done so well that its run has been extended through May 29.
With music and lyrics by songwriter Mark Nutter and a book by Gordon, William J. Norris and frequent Gordon collaborator Dennis Paoli, Re-Animator: The Musical might seem like an unlikely entry in the popular trend of converting film into musical theater,...

While co-hosting (with festival head Rachel Belofsky and Jonna Jackson) last week’s Screamfest La mixer at Te’Kila and 504 on Hollywood Boulevard (in attendance were horror movers and shakers John Skipp, F. Javier Gutiérrez, Stephen Goldmann, John Michael Elfers, Drina Durazo and more), I caught up with Re-Animator filmmaker Stuart Gordon in order to discuss his current projects as well as the currently previewing play Re-Animator – The Musical.
Opening on March 5th at the Steve Allen Theatre in Hollywood, CA, the stage musical incarnation of Gordon’s 1985 filmic hit (both of which center around Dr. Herbert West, a medical student obsessed with reanimating the dead) runs Friday through Saturday nights through March 27, and Gordon told us of the play over a cocktail amid the boisterous din, “Audiences seem to really like it, which is great! We’re previewing all weekend, and those nights are already sold out, which is a wonderful thing.

Hold on to your head (hardy, har, har)! Re-Animator - The Musical is upon us. At least, it is for you lucky sons of bitches with some sort of proximity to Los Angeles' Steve Allen Theater.
This would be a cool project on its own, but considering that Stuart Gordon is actually directing this sucker, it's a must see. In 1985 Stuart Gordon directed his first feature film and created a sensation. It was “Re-Animator,” a smashing success based on a horror story by H.P. Lovecraft. The film delivered as many laughs as it did screams, making it a cult classic among horror fans, and won a Critic’s Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Now Gordon is back with his co-writers Dennis Paoli and William J. Norris and composer/lyricist Mark Nutter to turn “Re-Animator” into a musical for the stage.
Special effects are being done by the same guys...

Director Stuart Gordon is taking his Re-animator film and bringing it to the stage in Re-animator: The Musical. Opening March 5th at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood, the play will run Fridays through Sundays until March 27th....
Everyone should know the tale of Dr. Herbert West and his glowing green serum that returns the dead to life but now you'll be able to experience it an a completely different way. Tony Doublin, John Beuchler and John Naulin will be providing the FX and they were all part of the original film. Murk Nutter takes care of the music and lyrics.
Bringing the characters to life will be Graham Skipper, as Herbert West, George Wendt (yeah, from Cheers), Chris L. McKenna, Jesse Merlin, Rachel Avery, Mark Beltzman, Cynthia Carle, Brian Gillespie and Liesel Hanson. The film is a bloody beauty and the musical will be no different as the...

Film review: 'The Sixth Man'

Pair "Son of Flubber" with "Topper" and you've got "The Sixth Man", a fantastical modern-day basketball story of triumph that should appeal to kids over spring break. With plenty of smash-face dialogue and slam-dunk histrionics, this old-style, fast-moving movie will do well with younger mainstream, urban audiences.
If you're old enough to remember the "Topper" series or smart enough to watch the oldies on cable, you'll notice that "Sixth Man" is fueled by ectoplasm, that fantastic movie stuff that allows one character to see another phantom-angelic character while others cannot.
In this up-to-date scenario, sensational young basketball player Antoine (Kadeem Hardison) has suffered a heart attack while making a Slam Dunk. The heart and soul of his team, the Washington Huskies, Antoine was supposed to lead the Pac-10ers to the NCAA championship. Now the burden has fallen on the shoulders of his younger brother, Kenny (Marlon Wayans), who has never attained the superstar status of his sibling nor the confidence to lead the team.
In this derivative but supple scenario, Kenny comes back as kind of a mischievous guardian angel, hoisting even the stubbiest of the Huskies to slam-dunk capabilities. Indeed, the fantasy sequences are a whole lot of fun here as the most unlikeliest basketballers throw down stuff that would make even Michael Jordan blink.
In addition, there's a subplot involving a smart and lovely college reporter (Michael Michele) who is suspicious of the Huskies' sudden sensational skills, upsetting the likes of North Carolina, etc.
When you follow all the Xs and Os in the plotting, it's not too hard to figure out who eventually will win the NCAA title in this case. But although the plot may be as predictable as a pick and roll, it has some nice moral spin to it. Credit screenwriters Christopher Reed and Cynthia Carle for instilling some positive messages about winning in this basketballer, and credit director Randall Miller for bringing the story upcourt really fast.
Among the players, cast an all-star ballot for Wayans as the shooter who grows with confidence and Hardison for his rambunctious portrayal of the deceased but devilishly inspirational superstar. Michele is winning as the reporter who uncovers the story.
Tech credits are up to the standards of the genre, especially the fun visual effects work of Available Light Ltd., which could make slam-dunk stars of us all.
