When it first aired in 2000, "Six Feet Under" was unknowingly part of the dawn of a golden age of television. Alongside early-aughts HBO hits like "The Wire" and "The Sopranos," the tragicomedy told the story of a family-run funeral home trying to make sense of life and death in the wake of the sudden loss of their father.

A revival has reportedly been in the works for some time, despite the fact that it would seemingly be in conflict with what is arguably the greatest series finale of a TV show ever. Still, the mere idea of a return to these loveable, complicated, and tragic characters makes us wonder what happened to the cast of "Six Feet Under?"

First-Look Images Are Out for Apple TV’s “Masters of the Air”

The long-awaited World War II drama “Masters of the Air” has taken to the skies as Apple TV+ has released the first images for the highly anticipated limited series.

Executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman and based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, “Masters of the Air” follows the 100th Bomb Group (a.k.a. the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct bombing raids over Nazi Germany as they grapple with the psychological, physical, and emotional conditions of war.

The all-star ensemble is led by Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook, and Ncuti Gatwa.

“Masters of the Air” will premiere on Apple TV+ with two episodes on Jan. 26, followed by one new episode every Friday through March 15.

Director Scott Derrickson confirms that his segment in V/H/S/85 takes place in the same universe as his 2021 horror film, The Black Phone. The Black Phone, based on a story by Joe Hill, was a hit and earned over $160 million at the box office. Derrickson's segment in V/H/S/85 features an interesting connection to Gwen from The Black Phone.

Director Scott Derrickson has confirmed that his segment in the upcoming horror outing V/H/S/85 takes place in the same universe as his 2021 horror film, The Black Phone. The popular Blumhouse mystery thriller is based on a story by Joe Hill and starred Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, E. Roger Mitchell, Troy Rudeseal, James Ransone, and Miguel Mora. The Black Phone follows 13-year-old Finney Blake (played by Thames) who is abducted by a disturbing child killer (played by Hawke) and locked in a soundproof basement.

While HBO Max may now be Max, there are still loads of new films to watch on the streaming service. From the early hits of now young adult actors and actresses like Dakota Fanning and Jaden Smith to one of Will Smith’s emotional movies and the 2020 Best Picture Oscar winner “Parasite,” there are options for all sorts of audiences, even the superhero-loving ones.

A follow-up series to Alan Ball’s Six Feet Under is being explored by HBO, Deadline has learned.

The project is in its very early stages; I hear the premium network has commissioned a script, with no firm concept and no writer attached yet. Series creator/executive producer Ball and executive producers Bob Greenblatt and David Janollari are on board to executive produce the project, which was first reported by Deadline’s sister pub Variety.

Created and produced by Ball, Six Feet Under aired for five seasons on HBO from 2001-2005. It centered around the lives of the Fisher family, who run a funeral home in Los Angeles, along with their friends and lovers.

Peter Krause, Michael C. Hall, Frances Conroy, Lauren Ambrose, Freddy Rodriguez, Mathew St. Patrick, and Rachel Griffiths starred in the ensemble drama. It was produced by Actual Size Films and The Greenblatt/Janollari Studio.

The cast and crew of Six Feet Under reunited for the first time in 15 years this week at PaleyFest LA, sharing recollections of their time on the show and their thoughts on its legacy.

The creatives who joined in the panel included creator and executive producer Alan Ball and EPs Robert Greenblatt, David Janollari and Alan Poul, along with cast members Peter Krause, Rachel Griffiths, Michael C. Hall, Lauren Ambrose, Freddy Rodríguez and Frances Conroy.

Early in the conversation, Ball and Janollari reflected on their experience pitching Six Feet Under to HBO. “I think it was the day after Alan racked up a million nominations for American Beauty, and they sat there and loved what Alan had to say. The next day, [they] called and ordered the pilot,” Janollar said. “We essentially shot 98% of exactly what Alan wrote, and I think they had one big note, which was, ‘Just make it more f*cked up.

This weekend, Wonder Woman has helped breathe new life in to the Dceu, the expanded cinematic superhero universe created by Warner Bros and DC Comics after a less-than-spectacular start last year. Through its global opening, the Patty Jenkins-directed film grossed over $223million worldwide and is set to top the weekend again come Sunday.

It’s a great result for both the studios given the reactions, both critically and from audiences, to their two previous efforts, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Both were hits in terms of box office ($872.7million and $745.6million respectively) but there’s some work to do to realign the franchise in the eyes on the fans. WB are still pressing ahead with their films, including Justice League, Aquaman and Batgirl amongst others but one that seems to also be on the radar is a Suicide Squad sequel.

Every Monday my Facebook feed is filled with people kvetching about Vinyl, the new HBO series created by Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger and Terence Winters. Every criticism I see is valid (the pace is slow, the characters and the situations in which they find themselves are unbelievable), but I still kind of like it.

If you haven’t watched, you should know that Vinyl is about a record company struggling through the changes in music and culture in the early mid-1970s. I moved to New York full time a few years later, so perhaps some of the reason I like it is that it reminds me of my lost youth.

NUVOtv, the premier English-language destination for Latino entertainment, will debut the official film selections for Nuvo Point of View: The Emerging Latino Filmmakers its showcase on Saturday, November 15 at a screening held in conjunction with the NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (Nfmla) film festival at the At&T Center in Los Angeles.

In addition, the televised special by the same name will include exclusive interviews with the filmmakers and host Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin, "Filly Brown"), and will air on Thursday, December 4 at 8pm Et/Pt. Actor and SAG-aftra Board Member Jon Huertas (Castle, "The Objective") will also lend his support to the premiere event as one of the evening’s program presenters.

“We are extremely proud to present this exciting collection of films that showcase the work of some of the nation’s most talented aspiring Latino writers, directors and producers,” said Lynnette Ramirez, Svp of Programming, NUVOtv. “This programming will give audiences an intimate look at what drives each filmmaker’s creative process.”

Nuvo Point of View: The Emerging Latino Filmmakers was inspired by the creative vision of Jennifer Lopez and Nuyorican Productions to feature the top talented Latino screenwriters, producers and directors and is now presenting its third showcase since debuting in March of this year. Over 900 films have been submitted for the showcase to date and returning film jury members Gregory Nava, Frida Torresblanco and Michael Olmos were heavily involved in the selection process of the final four films.

"Avenues" (88 minutes) tells the story of Saul Sanchez who returns home to the rough Northeast Los Angeles neighborhood of Highland Park, also known as The Avenues, after serving a decade-long prison sentence. His hopes are in connecting with his daughter, whom he has never met. The film is both written and directed by Aaref Rodriguez and was shot in Los Angeles.

"Luna" (12 minutes), another Los Angeles production, presents a dramatic storyline with a young girl witnessing the murder of her family by a mysterious killer. Now she must try to survive before the killer finds her. Antonio Perez served as writer, producer and director.

"Meditation" (14 minutes) is the third film shot in Los Angeles and tells the story of a divorce mediation that spirals out of control for a husband, his soon-to-be ex-wife and their court-appointed mediator. The film was written and directed by Francisco Lorite, and produced by Bill Winett and Freddy Rodríguez.

"How You Doin’ Boy?" (4 minutes) is a character-driven hybrid short about the pint-sized elderly Latino “Gran'pa” who leaves a series of humorous unanswered voicemails for his grandson “Davy.” William D. Caballero served as writer, producer and director. The film was shot in New Jersey.

Award-winning filmmaker Francisco Lorite has received a 2014 “Best Theatrical Short" Imagen Award nomination for his short film entitled “Mediation”. This marks the second time Lorite is nominated for an Imagen - he previously won for his groundbreaking short film “Cuco Gomez Gomez is Dead”.

The Imagen Awards are given annually by the Imagen Foundation to recognize and reward the positive portrayal of Latinos in all media, as well as to honor the achievements of Latinos in the entertainment and communications industries.

The 29th Annual Imagen (Spanish for image) Awards will be presented at a gala black-tie dinner on Friday evening, August 1st, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel International Ballroom.

"Mediation" is the first project released by the brand new Film/TV production company entitled Top Rebel Productions - the brainchild of Francisco Lorite, actor Freddy Rodríguez (“Six Feet Under”, "Night Shift”) and veteran producer Bill Winett.

The short tells the story of a divorce mediation that spirals completely out of control for a husband (Freddy Rodriguez), his soon-to-be ex-wife (Marley Shelton) and their court-appointed mediator (Lola Anthony).

Launched earlier this year, Top Rebel Productions, is not only offering a viable platform for Latin actors to break Hollywood stereotypes, and present characters that are moving beyond the outdated stereotype, but also to tell stories they care about on their own terms while inspiring audiences.

While Freddy Rodriguez is returning to the small screen with the TV series “Night Shift”, which premiered on NBC May 27, Top Rebel marks as well the actor's new business venture and opportunity to increase his presence behind the camera.

The trio immediately went to work shooting "Mediation" - a short film borrowing from the film noire style of the 50s. As the first project released under the Top Rebel Productions marquee, "Mediation" presents and sets the tone for the production company's stable of projects and shows that excellent production can be accomplished with little budget.

The road less traveled has certainly been the path to success for Lorite. Known for his multiple award-winning no-budget short “ Cuco Cuco Gomez is Dead”, Lorite accomplished something few directors have.

Cuco not only screened over 150 times in the U.S. alone, got sold for broadcast and garnered prominent media attention; but it also won five awards --including the prestigious Imagen Award for Best Theatrical Short, "Best Cine Latino" at the DC Film Festival, "Best Edited Short" at the 2005 Manhattan Short Film Festival, and a Special Jury Honor presented by Edward James Olmos at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival.

Not so bad for a Spaniard who a few years ago packed his bags and moved to New York City with little knowledge of English and just one idea in mind: to write and direct. Lorite admits to teaching himself English, with a little help from a blue pocket-dictionary and "Three's company" reruns, in order to be able to start making a living acting in this country. Similarly, he credits his Vcr for teaching him all he knows about editing, writing, directing and calls Netflix his film grad school!

Bringing a unique passion to his craft and desire to make his mark, Lorite is certainly one talented filmmaker to keep an eye on.

Another week in October, another bounty crop of horror DVDs and Blu-rays. This week we have home entertainment from recent theatrical releases of nightmares of the mind as well as re-releases of classic and campy horror, all with boatloads of extras.

Then there are other horror titles that are being re-released on Blu-ray or in packs for double dipping. On top of that, horror offerings from Asia, past seasons of TV shows, manga, novels, and even video games are all vying for our pocketbooks. And we still have four more weeks of October to go.

Next year October needs to begin in August.

Grindhouse finally coming to Blu-ray in a two-disc set with both feature films We reported a few weeks back that a double-feature film set could be hitting 1080p shelves in the very near future and now that news has been confirmed. High Def Digest is reporting that Vivendi is planning on releasing Grindhouse: Special Edition on Blu-ray on October 5.

No specs or special features details were released, but the site also reports that both Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof and Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror will both be released in this two-disc Bd set, which will be priced at $19.97 Srp.

Is the uncut Grindhouse finally coming to DVD? When Grindhouse opened in theaters across the country on April 6th of 2007, it didn't fare too well at the box office. Some blamed the film's length, and when it arrived on DVD and Blu-ray, it was released as two separate films: Death Proof [2 Discs] [Special Edition] [Extended and Unrated] and Planet Terror [2 Discs] [Special Edition] [Extended and Unrated]. Absent from these releases were the faux-trailers that ran during the film's intended intermission.

If we're to believe a new Twitter update from Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World director Edgar Wright, the release of Grindhouse in its uncut form, with all of the faux-trailers, scratches, and blemishes intact, including Wright's own hilarious trailer for the thriller Don't, could be coming very shortly. Giving this short hint, here's what the director told his fans:

"So, get this, tomorrow I am doing a commentary on 'Don't'. Some of you will know what that means is finally happening."

It's been reported that the new CBS drama series 'Chaos' has been killed off before it even left the starting gate. According to Deadline, the game of brinkmanship between the network and the producer/distributor 20th Century Fox Television was still ongoing when the options on the actors' contracts expired at midnight Wednesday.

The breakdown in negotiations has been described as "a classic example of political gamesmanship between two companies that don't trust each other."

'Chaos' was due to star Freddy Rodríguez ('Six Feet Under') as a naive C.I.A. agent who wants to make the world a better place. It was written by Tom Spezialy ('Reaper,' Desperate Housewives') and the well-received pilot was directed by Brett 'X Men' Ratner, who was also in line to executive-produce the series with Spezialy.

CBS' planned "Criminal Minds" spinoff has tapped Beau Garrett as its female lead. Elsewhere on the pilot front, David Krumholtz,  Kathryn Hahn, Cole Hauser and Freddy Rodriguez have landed roles.

Garrett will play a new FBI recruit who joins the team of profilers led by Forest Whitaker's character, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She'll also have a flirtatious relationship with Matt Ryan's character. The proposed spinoff will be introduced in a "Criminal Minds" episode toward the end of the season.

Garrett co-stars in "Tron Legacy" later this year. Her other credits include "Turistas," "4: Rise of the Silver Surfer" and an episode of "House" earlier this season.

Serviceable holiday romp thrives on cast

Is it really a cynical gesture to cast Hispanics in the reunion holiday-comedy staple and call it new? It doesn’t have to be, and it isn’t really in Nothing Like the Holidays, the cheerfully broad new comedy about a Puerto Rican family whose grown children return to Chicago for Christmas. The conventions of these films have become so streamlined that each new title is clearly an attempt to cash in on the goodwill of the season, and this risk-free, harmless movie’s rewrite of the usual formula is no more dishonorable than any of the annual offenders.

There's no shortage of warmth in Nothing Like The Holidays, a rambunctious Christmas comedy-drama featuring a who's-who of Latino talent, including Alfred Molina, Elizabeth Peña, Freddy Rodríguez, John Leguizamo, Luis Guzmán, Jay Hernandez, Melonie Diaz, Vanessa Ferlito, and Debra Messing. NEW YORK -- Debra Messing is rounding out the ensemble cast of the Latino family drama Humboldt Park for Overture Films.

In Alfredo De Villa's film, Messing plays the wife of John Leguizamo's character and joins him on a trip back to his parent's home. Executive producer Freddy Rodriguez, Alfred Molina, Jay Hernandez, Mercedes Ruehl, Luis Guzman, Melonie Diaz and Vanessa Ferlito also star.

The State Street Pictures and 2DS Productions feature was written by Rick Najera, Ted Perkins and Alison Swan. Robert Teitel and George Tillman Jr. are producing. Filming is set to begin Feb. 13 in Chicago.

Former Will & Grace star Messing recently earned a SAG Award nomination for the miniseries The Starter Wife, and will appear in a USA Network series version of the project this summer. She will also be seen in Picturehouse's remake of The Women this fall.

Molina is the father who owns a bodega, and Hernandez plays a friend of the family who works there. Diaz is a former lover of Rodriguez's character and friends with the clan's daughter (Ferlito). Ruehl is the matriarch.

Shooting is set to begin Feb. 13 in Chicago.

Molina, repped by Endeavor and Joan Hyler Management, recently wrapped Pink Panther 2 as well as The Lodger, a thriller with Hope Davis and Simon Baker.

Diaz is coming off a strong showing at Sundance where she appeared in four movies, including Hamlet 2. She is repped by UTA and Framework Entertainment.

Overture Films has signed on to produce and distribute "Humboldt Park", a family dramedy starring John Leguizamo and Freddy Rodriguez.

State Street Pictures ("Barbershop") and 2DS Prods. are behind the film, which focuses on a family reunion over the holidays in the Chicago neighborhood of Humboldt Park.

The script -- which was penned by Rick Najera, Ted Perkins and Alison Swan -- was completed before the strike, which will allow production to move forward early next year. Overture is tentatively planning a fall 2008 release. Alfredo De Villa will direct the picture, which in addition to Leguizamo and Rodriguez is expected to feature a large ensemble cast.

Robert Teitel and George Tillman Jr. will produce for State Street, while Rodriguez, Rene Rigal, Reid Brody and Paul Kim will executive produce.

The movie continues a relationship between State Street and Overture execs Chris McGurk and Danny Rosett, who while with MGM collaborated with State Street on the "Barbershop" movies.

Overture, a unit of Liberty Media-owned Starz, has been beefing up its slate as it prepares to release its first batch of movies next year.

Six Feet Under alum Freddy Rodriguez has joined the cast of ABC's dramedy Ugly Betty, playing a new love interest for star America Ferrera.

Additionally, Rodriguez has been cast in the indie Bottle Shock, written and to be directed by Randy Miller.

On Betty, Rodriguez will play Gio (short for Giovanni), a smart, ambitious, aggressive and lovable blue-collar guy who runs the office sandwich cart and prides himself in making each sandwich a work of art. It won't be long before sparks begin to fly between him and Betty (Ferrera).

Shock tells the true story of Chateau Montelena, a small, struggling California vineyard that won a blind taste test in Paris in 1976 to break into the previously French-dominated wine industry. Rodriguez will play a guy gifted with extraordinary palate who works at the winery.

Rodriguez was nominated for an Emmy in 2001 for his role as Frederico Diaz on HBO's Six Feet Under. On the big screen, he was recently seen in Bobby, Harsh Times and as the male lead in Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror portion of the Grindhouse double feature.

Ice-T has signed with the agency in all areas. The rapper-actor-producer-author, now part of the cast of NBC's Law & Order: SVU, began his career as a pioneering force in the West Coast hip-hop scene. He then moved into acting, landing his first film role in the 1991 feature New Jack City. Ice-T, who also is a lecturer and wrote the book "The Ice Opinion", is managed by Jorge Hinojos.

Freddy Rodriguez will be honored as supporting actor of the year at ShoWest, the annual film industry convention set for March 12-15 at the Bally's and Paris hotels in Las Vegas.

Rodriguez, who most recently appeared as part of the ensemble cast of Bobby, which the Weinstein Co. released through MGM, will next be seen in Dimension Films' Grindhouse, which opens nationwide April 6.

"Since bursting onto the scene with his critically acclaimed and Emmy-nominated role on HBO's 'Six Feet Under,' Rodriguez has gone on to bring impressive performances to such notable films as 'Dreamer,' 'Lady in the Water' and 'Bobby, ' " said Mitch Neuhauser, ShoWest co-managing director.
