The Western is one of the oldest and most important genres of American film ever, tracing its roots back to the earliest days of Hollywood and kick-starting the careers of legendary filmmakers and actors like John Ford, John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. But like many genres, Western films often exaggerate elements of real history in order to create more compelling stories.
Some of the best-received and reviewed Western films of all time have come under scrutiny for lacking accuracy or mischaracterizing the reality of life in the American West. Even though these movies might act as excellent pieces of fiction, their depiction of history leaves much to be desired.

John McTiernan's career was cut short and he hasn't been properly celebrated. Starting with his 1987 classic "Predator" the hits just kept coming with "Die Hard," "The Hunt For Red October," and "The Thomas Crown Affair." McTiernan's signature is big, brawny, macho action movies with a human touch. His heroes, like the wise-cracking John McClane, are tough but relatable. Heck, he even made an oiled-up Arnold Schwarzenegger seem vulnerable. McTiernan's Hollywood adventure ended prematurely in 2013 when he went to prison for lying to the FBI. He was caught up in a dragnet involving crooked Hollywood private investigator Anthony Pellicano and served almost a year in the slammer.
The Pellicano case was supposed to be an epic Hollywood scandal. Vanity Fair predicted it would "bring down some of the town's top names." In the end, McTiernan was the only notable collar. He'd first hired the Pi in 1998 while going through a divorce.

The iconic bobsled prop featured in the classic feel-good Disney movie Cool Runnings was stolen this week from the Canadian bar where it had been on display since filming wrapped nearly three decades ago. Located at Ranchman's bar in Calgary, Alberta, the bobsled had been gifted to the establishment by the movie's production crew. Although the bar closed last month, the bobsled had hung without incident outside below the roof of the building until it was taken down sometime between Oct. 21-25.
"I feel like I got gut-punched," said Rob Campbell, the realtor handling the sale of the property. As suspending the bobsled to begin with was a very difficult task, Campbell also suggests that the theft appears to have been professionally planned by a group of individuals.
"It's just a sickening feeling and my stomach dropped. This was not something sitting on the front patio. It was suspended 20 feet...

ABC is not moving forward with a second season of drama series The Crossing.
The Crossing premiered April 2 with American Idol as a lead-in, but that episode of the revived singing-competition series happened to match a series-low demo rating for a regular telecast. Post-Idol, the midseason drama managed to eke out a win in the 10 Pm hour with a 1.0 and 5.45 million viewers. It outperformed same night last year for ABC by double digits but fell short of previous week’s The Good Doctor wrapper and its season average, though that still left it ABC’s second-most-watched Monday 10 Pm debut, behind Doctor, in nearly three years.
The series stared Steve Zahn as the sheriff of a small fishing town in Oregon who must deal with dozens of refugees from a war-torn country who arrive on its beach. One twist: The country they’re from is America — and the war they’re...

"We all have it coming, kid." Any big fans of this film out there? Clint Eastwood's Best Picture-winning classic western Unforgiven is being re-released with a brand new, restored 4K print. Eastwood was just at the Cannes Film Festival last month, presenting the restored version of film in the Cannes Classics section and talking at a masterclass seminar during the festival. Unforgiven "summarizes everything I feel about the Western,” director/star Clint Eastwood told the La Times. The film features Eastwood as Bill Munny, with Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, Richard Harris, Jaimz Woolvett, Saul Rubinek, Frances Fisher, Anna Levine, David Mucci, and Rob Campbell. It was first released in 1992. Hopefully this 4K version will end up in Us theaters after first playing in France this summer. Watch the official trailer below. Here's the French trailer (+ poster) for the re-release of Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, from YouTube: Retired Old West...

ABC has picked up four new series from its sister ABC Studios, including a new drama from Shonda Rhimes’ company, a drama about saving the world (starring Jason Ritter), a series about refugees… from America, and comedy that sounds like it might take a few cues from the recently installed White House inhabitant.
