There’s no question that SXSW has outdone itself this year in terms of genre programming. The festival is kicking off its 31st year this Thursday in Austin, Texas, unleashing a dizzying slate of premieres and events, with a surprising emphasis on horror, sci-fi, and thrillers.
SXSW 2025 has filled its Headliner section, a programming track dedicated to the biggest gala film events and premieres with star power, with highly anticipated genre titles that include Flying Lotus‘s sci-fi horror movie Ash, Christopher Landon‘s ode to Brian De Palma in upcoming thriller Drop, and A24’s nightmare comedy Death of a Unicorn. But there’s so much more to discover beyond the big red carpet premieres. Not even the Midnighter category, which is dedicated to genre film, can contain the sheer volume of offerings.

U.K. sales and distribution outfit Blue Finch Films has acquired worldwide sales rights to “The Surrender,” a supernatural horror feature marking the directorial debut of Julia Max. The chiller is set to make its world premiere at SXSW as part of the fest’s Midnighter section.
Colby Minifie (“The Boys”) and Emmy nominee Kate Burton (“Grey’s Anatomy”) topline the cast alongside Neil Sandilands (“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”) in this supernatural tale that explores grief through horror.
The film follows a fraught mother-daughter relationship put to a terrifying test when the family patriarch dies. The grieving mother hires a mysterious stranger to resurrect her husband, but as the brutal resurrection spirals out of control, both women must confront their differences while fighting for their lives — and each other.

When "Grey's Anatomy" premiered as a mid-season replacement in March of 2005 thanks to creator and showrunner Shonda Rhimes, it's safe to say that nobody genuinely thought it would keep running and running and running until it became the longest-running medical drama in TV history. As of this writing, the show is partway through airing its 21st season — and even though Ellen Pompeo, the star of the series who puts the Grey in "Grey's Anatomy" as Dr. Meredith Grey, left the show as a main cast member in its 19th season, it shows no signs of stopping.
Due to the fact that, in real life, hospitals change personnel with some regularity and new intern classes begin their residencies each summer, "Grey's Anatomy" is able to remain (relatively) fresh even with hundreds of episodes under its belt, introducing new intern classes every few years to keep the momentum going. Beyond that, though,...

Reboots are all the rage now, and here’s a quick rundown of every network show that is getting the treatment!
“Everything old is new again” surely applies to TV these days. It’s like you can’t flip a channel or put on a streamer without a new take on an old show, some of which went off the air not that long ago. Paramount+ just canceled the revival of Fraiser and some old cable shows like White Collar may get the sequel treatment soon.
For network shows, it looks like reboots won’t be dying anytime soon. Networks rely on name recognition for a TV show and often help if the original actors or creators take part in it. Some shows may seem to not need a reboot, while others are shows fans would love to see coming back.

At some point during the filming of Bulldozer, law enforcement got word that the half-hour comedy pilot was filming without proper permits.
“They started trying to bust down the door,” recalls director Andrew Leeds of officers showing up to their shoot in the Valley, demanding the production clear out.
It was a potentially disastrous moment, given that Bulldozer was self-financed (no studio lawyers to intervene), and was largely made by calling in favors to people like Mary Steenburgen, who plays the mother to creator/star Joanna Leeds’ character. Producers held the door shut so they could finish filming, and tried to shield Steenburgen from the chaos, not wanting the show’s biggest name to feel she was on a production that didn’t have its shit together.
“I am literally chatting Mary up, looking over my shoulder at these cops going, ‘Oh my God, please don’t turn around,’” says executive producer Rhett Reese,...

Like any movie genre with hugely popular movies and franchises, there comes a time when the studios decide to revisit their existing IPs by remaking movies from their back catalog. The horror genre is no different, and while audiences often get some great remakes, such as 1982's The Thing, and The Fly from 1986, there are many horror remakes that would have benefited from a few changes.
There have also been some excellent modern horror remakes recently, such as the intoxicating Speak No Evil, plus hopes are high for Robert Eggers' upcoming Nosferatu. However, for every horror remake that lands a killer blow with audiences, and at the box office, there are other movies from the genre that would have been much better with a few tweaks. There's nothing wrong with remaking classic horrors, if they're remade with respect to the original.

When you watch a TV show as disaster-prone as Grey’s Anatomy is, and when you follow a protagonist as trauma-ridden as Meredith Grey is, you’d better keep the tissues close at hand. Shonda Rhimes and the ABC hospital drama’s other writers have been pulling at our heartstrings for two decades now, but sometimes, they yank those strings hard enough to rip our hearts into shreds instead. Here are our selections for the saddest moments from the show’s run so far. 13. Bailey tells a desperate father he has to stop. In Season 5’s “Sweet Surrender,” a dad (Elden Henson) is ready to travel to Mexico to find a cure for his daughter’s case of Tay-Sachs. But Bailey (Chandra Wilson) convinces him to stay with his daughter during her final moments, and he offers his daughter a white lie before she dies. 12. Ellis belittles Meredith. Ellis Grey...

Greys Anatomy has gained a reputation for killing some of its most beloved characters off with some incredibly emotional deaths, and even main characters aren't safe. Greys Anatomy follows the basic premise of medical dramas, focusing on the lives of surgical interns, residents, and attendings as they balance their professional and personal lives, which more often than not overlap and create a lot of drama inside and outside Seattle Grace Hospital (now Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital).
The show is led by Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) alongside other main characters who became audience favorites, many lasting for several years through Grey's Anatomy's 20-season-plus run. Greys Anatomy has become infamous for killing characters when their time on the show is over, and only some lucky few have been given satisfying endings where they got to keep on living. Kurt Russell is a powerhouse of Hollywood with a great deal of credits to his name, not the least of which being a collection of commendable comedies. A versatile actor, Kurt Russell is best known for his work in action movies, particularly under the watchful eye of John Carpenter, making a name for himself in titles like The Thing and Escape From New York. It's easy to forget that outside of Russell and Carpenter's collaborations, he's also starred in quite a number of comedies, as well.
Compared to Kurt Russell's Westerns or cheesy 80s blockbusters, Russell is usually the best thing about the comedies he's in. In general, the actor's films historically haven't been massive hits at the box office, and his more humorous appearances keep to this unfortunate pattern. Whether or not the movie surrounding him holds up on his own, Russell always manages to bring a cheery performance...

FBI Season 6 can best be summed up in two words: Treading water.
Collins Dictionary defines treading water as "to be in an unsatisfactory situation where you are not progressing, but are just continuing doing the same things."
Ok, so maybe that definition is a little harsh when it comes to describing the latest FBI season.
Its powers-that-be did give viewers a dash or two of character development. Not the average amount they would have received from an entire season, but some.
Questions about the impact of those changes in the characters' lives will have to wait for the next complete season to be answered.
Yet ever present were those "ripped-from-the-headlines" storylines for which Dick Wolf is renowned.
The terrorists, the possibility of Armageddon, and the tense takes on terrible threats remained front and center. If anything, this procedural became even more procedural, if that's possible.

Actor Brooke Shields has been elected president of Actors’ Equity Association, the union has announced.
Shields took the lead in a three-way race, beating out stage manager Erin Maureen Koster and actor Wydetta Carter. Actors’ Equity is represents 51,000 actors and stage managers.
Shields succeeds Kate Shindle as president, who announced in April that she would not seek re-election when her nine-year tenure ended May 23. Shindle has said that she will remain active in the labor movement but now intends to focus on resuming her acting career, noting that the unpaid position of president left her with so little time for acting that she had not been able to clock enough professional hours to quality for Equity health insurance.
Shields’ win was confirmed this morning by Equity, which announced the results of its 2024 Officer and Councilor Election. In total, 45 council seats across all three regions and representing four categories were filled, effective immediately. All terms are four years except where noted.
In addition to Shields, the 2024 officers include Rashaan James II, elected Eastern Regional Vice President; Sarah Labarr, elected Central Regional Vice President, without opposition. [This story contains spoilers from the May 23 episode of Grey’s Anatomy, “I Carry Your Heart.”]
Caterina Scorsone and Kevin McKidd may not have been part of the original cast of Grey’s Anatomy. But in the last 15 years, between Grey’s and its two spinoffs, Private Practice and Station 19, Scorsone and McKidd have both logged enough hours in the O.R. to become two of the longest-lasting actors of the venerable ABC medical drama, which was recently renewed for a record-extending 21st season. (In the Grey’s universe, McKidd has played Dr. Owen Hunt in over 350 episodes; Scorsone has played Dr. Amelia Shepherd in over 280.)
At this point, the characters and the fictional world they live in feel as real to the audience as the actors who play them. While Grey’s began as a soapy romantic drama that followed the lives of surgeons at a Seattle teaching hospital, the show has indubitably become a cultural touchstone — and, in turn,...

Winston Ndugu's character in Grey's Anatomy season 20 remains stagnant and overshadowed by others. Winston's storylines revolve around his past relationship with Maggie Pierce, hindering his character development. The show fails to let Winston grow as an individual, making him solely defined by his connection to Maggie.
Grey's Anatomy season 20 proves that the show has a problem with its treatment of Dr. Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill). Since joining the series in season 16, Winston has gone through quite a bit, especially where his personal life is concerned. While he was a surgical resident at Tufts, Winston had a crush on his teacher, Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary). Just before Winston becomes an attending, Maggie moves to Seattle to learn more about her birth parents, Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) and Ellis Grey (Kate Burton). Six years later, Winston finally reconnects with Maggie at a surgical conference.

This was a much-overdue showcase for Oa that finally addressed the effects of his time with the Army in Afghanistan.
Not surprisingly, a case involving several Taliban on FBI Season 6 Episode 11 stirred things up for him.
And, frankly, you can never go wrong with a guest turn by Kate Burton portraying a weaselly politician.
It wasn't readily apparent why the FBI even got called in on an abduction of a random guy from his apartment building.
It must have been because NYPD discovered his boss was Leo Grant, the world's third-richest man, and they didn't want the inevitable pressure from above. Or maybe they passed it off because Tyler had wealthy parents, which would also lead to outside interference.
Oa was just relieved to get a call about any case so he would have an excuse not to explain the most painful time in his life to Gemma.
This again...

Meredith Grey has a complicated relationship with her family, including her mother Ellis and her father Thatcher, who affected her deeply. Meredith's half-sisters, Lexie and Molly, had significant impacts on her life and relationships, shaping her path as a general surgeon. The addition of siblings like Maggie, Zola, Derek, and Ellis Grey Shepherd added depth to Meredith's personal and professional journey on Grey's Anatomy.
Grey's Anatomy showcases the family members of the main characters, but how many sisters does Meredith Grey have? During her time on the show, Grey's Anatomy chronicled the life and medical career of Meredith Grey, who started her residency at Seattle Grace Hospital. Until recently leaving the show, each season saw Meredith take on several complicated cases, placing a significant emphasis on the relationships she builds in the hospital, which inspired her to achieve the success she did.
However, Meredith isn't the only "Grey" to have featured in the show.

After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, and the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek shifts his focus over to the works of John Carpenter with the latest episode in his The Best Scene video series. The Carpenter classic Lance is looking at with this one is the 1986 action extravaganza Big Trouble in Little China (watch it Here) – a movie that’s so good, he couldn’t pick just one “best scene”. He narrowed it down to three options, and you can hear all about them in the video embedded above.

Billy Porter wrote the song “Always Be My Man” before he even knew about the film “Our Son,” let alone knew he would star in it, too. The multi-talented performer had wanted to pen a piece with collaborators Joe Killington and Conor Reeves about “the complexity of a relationship,” especially because he was living through a moment in which he was “fighting” with his now ex-husband. When the script for Bill Oliver’s film came his way soon after, the actor felt “the song was the law of attraction for me to receive this moment.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
The desire to write a song for a film in which he also stars is one Porter has felt for a very long time. “I’ve been doing movies since 1999. I’ve been trying to get a song in a movie that I’m in since then. I have been completely dismissed for decades,...

Movies about the financial markets inevitably have the same problem. It simply isn’t that visually compelling watching people stare at their computers or phones and muttering expletives. Adam McKay’s The Big Short managed to avoid the pitfall thanks to its truly memorable characters and such stylistic flourishes as having Margot Robbie explain complicated financial concepts directly to the camera while lounging in a bathtub.
Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money, about the 2021 GameStop stock phenomenon fueled by individual investors driven by social media, doesn’t prove quite as successful. Nonetheless, the film receiving its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival proves entertaining enough, thanks to its canny screenplay relating the story as a Frank Capra-style battle between the little people and the rich bigwigs hoisted by their own petards, and the fun performances by a terrific ensemble.

The official trailer for Sony’s “Dumb Money” has dropped, shedding light on how a group of amateur investors artificially increased the stock value of GameStop, the popular video game retailer.
The short squeeze occurred in January 2021 after Reddit users on a page called “Wall Street Bets” united to catalyze a market explosion. As a result, significant hedge funds and independent short sellers incurred devastating financial loss.
Based on author Ben Mezrich’s “The Antisocial Network,” “Dumb Money” similarly centers around the Reddit users behind the phenomenon with actors Seth Rogen, Paul Dano, Sebastian Stan and Pete Davidson in lead roles.
The star-studded cast also includes Nick Offerman, Shailene Woodley, America Ferrera, Dane DeHaan, Vincent D’Onofrio, Clancy Brown, Anthony Ramos, Kate Burton, Christina Brucato, Deniz Akdeniz, Talia Ryder, Myha’la Herrold, Larry Owens and Rushi Kota.

Joseph L. Mankiewicz’ “Cleopatra,” which opened in New York on June 12, 1963 and in Los Angeles a week later, was not a flop. In fact, the 243-minute film was a box office champ making $26 million at the box office, $6 million more than the Cinerama epic “How the West was Won.” But being the most expensive movie of its time — the budget ended up being around $44 million which would be around $429.5 million in 2023 — it took a long time to recoup its staggering costs. The film was such a drain on Twentieth Century Fox, the studio ended up having to sell nearly 300 acres of its backlot. That acreage was transformed into Century City.
The budgets started to soar when the original production with Elizabeth Taylor, who asked for and received $1 million for her services, Peter Finch as Julius Caesar, Stephen Boyd as Marc Antony and veteran filmmaker Rouben Mamoulian as director, stopped production...

Does it count as representational progress when a drama about the fissures that destroy a gay marriage and the ensuing fight for primary custody of the couple’s child is just as bland as any heteronormative version of that sad story?
Bill Oliver’s Our Son boasts solid lead performances from Luke Evans and Billy Porter as the dads whose life together has hit a wall, plus a capable supporting cast stacked with talented theater actors. The movie is tasteful and restrained and sensitively handled at every step. But unless you count one of the men finding post-breakup sexual distraction wrapped around a slinky club kid named Solo (Isaac Powell), there’s too little here to distinguish the film from endless other broken-family dramas that have gone before.
There’s even less to put it on a level with standouts like Kramer vs. Kramer, The Squid and the Whale or Marriage Story.

Grey’s Anatomy was recently renewed for a season 20, and while it remains popular, it’s been over a decade since it received any attention from major awards bodies. Grey’s Anatomy premiered in 2005 and was an instant hit for ABC. Now, it’s the network’s longest-scripted primetime television series, but it is no longer considered a critical success in the way it once was in its early days. Grey’s Anatomy has nearly 40 Emmy nominations, but the last one – Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Loretta Devine (Adele Webber) – came in 2012 for a season 8 episode.
Grey’s Anatomy has been generally well-received by critics and audiences throughout its run and even spawned multiple spinoffs, but has been ignored by the major awards bodies for over half of said run. By the end of Grey’s Anatomy season 19, the series will have aired 420 episodes, marking yet another big milestone for the medical drama.

Dr. Maggie Pierce treated her last patient at Grey Sloan Memorial Thursday, after nine seasons as a core member of the “Grey’s Anatomy” cast.
For Kelly McCreary, the actress behind the talented cardiothoracic surgeon and Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) half-sister, the ABC medical drama’s two-hour farewell gave her the perfect vehicle to honor Maggie’s journey, and to close a major chapter in her own life and career.
“It meant a lot to me,” McCreary told TheWrap about the episodes. “When I spoke to Krista [Vernoff, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ showrunner and executive producer], after she agreed to let Maggie go, I said it’d be very nice to be able to have scenes that feel like closure with all of the characters that have meant something to Maggie … my homies, my family that I’ve been doing this with for such a long time.”

[This story contains spoilers from the April 13 episode of Grey’s Anatomy, “Shadow of Your Love/Mama Who Bore Me.”]
After nine seasons of playing Dr. Maggie Pierce, Kelly McCreary has said farewell to Grey’s Anatomy.
The April 13 episode — a double hour with “Shadow of Your Love/Mama Who Bore Me” — brought Maggie’s arc to a crossroad after weeks of marital tension with husband Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) as the brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon found herself in a professional crisis: Stay and work on her marriage or accept the once-in-a-lifetime offer at the Heart Center of Chicago?
To help Maggie make her decision, Grey’s Anatomy invoked Maggie’s lineage. The half-sister to Meredith Grey shares a birth mother with Ellen Pompeo’s titular character, Ellis Grey (Kate Burton). The late world-famous surgeon has always loomed large over both of her now also world-famous surgeon daughters, and McCreary says Ellis’ role in Maggie’s life has been the North Star...

Grey's Anatomy is losing another longtime cast member. The series, which is the longest-running primetime series currently on ABC, originally premiered in 2005. The series followed the romantic and professional travails of Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), who is both the narrator and the lead of an ensemble cast that throughout the years has included Katherine Heigl, Patrick Dempsey, Sandrah Oh, Sara Ramirez, and many more. Earlier this year on season 19, episode 7, "I'll Follow the Sun," Pompeo left the series as a regular cast member after 409 episodes.
Per Deadline, there are now more casting shakeups impending on Grey's Anatomy season 19. Kelly McCreary's Maggie Pierce is set to exit after starring on the series for nine seasons. Pierce, who is Grey's half-sister and the head of cardiothoracic surgery, will have her last episode as a regular cast member air on April 13.

The stage adaptation of “Room,” one of the most anticipated new plays of the spring Broadway season, is postponed indefinitely. The show was scheduled to begin performances on April 3, 2023 at the James Earl Jones Theatre. Rehearsals have ceased as the operation has shut down as of Thursday, March 16 2023.
The news must be particularly devastating for lead Adrienne Warren. The Tony-winner (“Tina: The Tina Turner Musical”) was widely predicted to receive another nomination for her turn as Ma. The role won Brie Larson an Oscar for the movie adaptation. Warren sat in fourth place in the Lead Actress in a Play category in Gold Derby’s combined odds.
Unless the Tony Administration Committee rules that any of the spring contenders will compete in a category contrary to their billing, Warren’s absence means there are just six women contending for a nomination. That is the lowest number of contenders a race...

The Broadway production of Room has been postponed indefinitely.
The production, which was in rehearsals with Adrienne Warren as the lead, will not go forward following a “shortfall in capitalization” and the withdrawal of a lead producer, the production said Thursday. The production, which was scheduled to begin performances April 3 at the James Earl Jones Theatre, was shuttered as of Thursday.
“In the midst of our rehearsals we were informed by one of our lead producers that due to personal reasons, they did not intend to fulfill their obligations to the production. Since being notified, the rest of the producing team has exhausted all possible avenues to keep the show on track, but the narrow timeline and economic shortfall created by this series of events has proven to be insurmountable,” producer Hunter Arnold said in the press release. “We are incredibly disappointed not to be able to open this remarkable...

Since Grey’s Anatomy first premiered in 2005, it has aired 19 seasons, 406 episodes, and birthed 3 spinoffs. Naturally the show has had to adapt as cast members come and go throughout the years. This sometimes makes it hard to recall what exactly went on in season 1. Although who can forget Addison Montgomery (then Shepherd) saying the iconic line, “I’m Addison Shepherd … and you must be the woman who’s been screwing my husband.”
With every new intern class that Grey’s introduces viewers to, it always throws in a few Easter eggs to remind fans what made them fall in love with the show in the first place. However, it seems season 19 wanted to take this even further. Grey’s Anatomy season 19 launches a soft reboot that allows the series to ground itself in its season 1 roots. If the “begin again” tagline of the season 19 poster wasn’t a giveaway, season 19 throws back...
