The American Cinema Editors handed out the Eddie Awards on Friday (Jan. 26). Oscar watchers were in attendance for the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton as they are keenly aware that Ace is aces as one of the best indicators of which film takes home the Best Picture Oscar

Since 1990, the film that came up with an Ace went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 17 times. And in seven of the 10 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, the Eddie champ was at least a contender for Best Picture, including last year when both the drama winner (“Arrival”) and the comedy/musical champ (“La La Land”) were among the eight Best Picture nominees that lost the top Oscar to “Moonlight.”

This is one of the most important guilds to take notice of, due to how Best Film Editing at the Academy Awards can often link up to Best Picture. It’s not a perfect correlation, but when looking for hints as to what voters might do, anything helps. Here, they’ve nominated almost all of the likely Best Picture nominees, so that’s a help. Pop duo Tegan and Sara and comedy-music trio The Lonely Island will perform the Oscar-nominated song "Everything Is Awesome" at the 87th Oscars, show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today. Monday morning, the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, announced nominations today for its 42nd Annual Annie Awards, recognizing the year’s best in the field of animation. Leading the pack with 13 nominations, including a nod for Best Animated Feature, is Laika Animation's "The Boxtrolls." Dreamworks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon 2" followed with 10 nominations, joining "Boxtrolls" in the Character Animation, Animation Effects, and Best Feature categories. Writer/directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the brains behind the huge animated hit The Lego Movie, talk with Deadline’s Pete Hammond about their “iterative” creative process, finding spontaneity in the grind of making animated films, and capturing the Diy spirit of amateurs making “brick movies.” They were speaking at Deadline’s recent Oscar showcase, The Contenders.

The voice cast includes Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, Craig Berry, Alison Brie and David Burrows. Producers were Roy Lee and Dan Lin. The film, made for an estimated $60 million, grossed $468 million worldwide. Warner Bros. distributed the film in the United States.

Miller and Lord are now one of Hollywood’s hottest screenwriting/directing/producing duos after their successes with Lego (a sequel is on the way), the 21 Jump Street franchise and the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs franchise.

Warner Bros. is putting a Lego Batman movie spinoff from this year's blockbuster The Lego Movie on the fast track for production, with the project taking precedence over The Lego Movie 2, which has been pushed back from its already announced May 26, 2017 release date.

Will Arnett is set to reprise his voice role as Batman from The Lego Movie, with director Chris McKay, who signed on to direct The Lego Movie 2 back in March, now set to direct this Batman spin-off. Author-screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith is providing the screenplay.

The studio is eyeing a 2017 release for this Batman spin-off, which may take The Lego Movie 2's now-vacated May 26, 2017 release date. Warner Bros. already set a September 23, 2016 release date for another spin-off, Ninjago. It isn't known when exactly The Lego Movie 2 will hit theaters, but it will presumably happen some time after 2017.

Even though The Lego Movie was a monster hit at the box office, some Warner Bros. executives think that Emmet's everyman story needs to be spiced up. Chris McKay has signed onto direct The Lego Movie 2. The new director served as animation co-director on original The Lego Movie this past winter.

Last month, we reported that the studio was mulling over whether or not to make The Lego Movie 2 or Lego Ninjago first. The studio is still considering plans for a Lego Ninjago movie, but nothing has been set in stone yet. Chris McKay has signed onto direct a straight sequel at this time. We reported last month that this sequel was moving forward with a script by Jared Stern (The Internship) and Michelle Morgan (Nancy Drew), with Warner Bros. setting a May 26, 2017 release date. The Lego Movie has made over $360 million worldwide since its release on February 7.

Original The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are producing the sequel, although no voice cast members have been confirmed yet.

Audiences are connecting with The Lego Movie in a big way, driving the first-ever full-length theatrical Lego adventure past $200 million in worldwide box office, less than two weeks after its record-breaking release. The announcement was made today by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The Lego Movie, from Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures and Lego System A/S, made its North American debut on Friday, February 7. When actors sign on to portray animated characters, most fans think they just record their dialogue and that's it. However, there is much more to the process, as Chris Pratt explains in a new featurette for The Lego Movie. The actor provides the voice of Lego builder Emmet, who is chosen to lead a team of heroes to stop an evil tyrant from destroying their universe. Although the character is just a tiny figure, the voice actor explains how his recording sessions were also captured on video, so that the animators could implement his facial expressions into Emmet. How do you combine the rhythm expected of an animated epic, and the pace that family films usually employ?

Today’s audiences are very smart, very film-literate – so you’ve got to try and stay ahead of them without ever leaving them behind! At the forefront of my mind when cutting any scene is getting to the heart of the story – and this very much dictated how I would approach any given scene – whether it was an intimate scene involving the family or a full-on battle scene. In Guardians the obvious through line of film is Soren’s story so keeping that front and centre was always the priority.. A good example of this is the scene where he and Gylfie try to escape from St Aggies.
