After barely escaping with a very important map from very bad people, the Pogues do something very Pogue-like in the first scene of Outer Banks season 4 episode 8, “Family Plot.” They – well, not Sarah – get high and try to decode the map to the Blue Crown at Poguelandia.

They probably should not have gone straight home, because Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane) shows up a few hours later. He begs for help, and JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow), the kind man that he is, tries to help him.

Outer Banks revolves around a group of Pogues living in the Outer Banks, led by John B, and although they're young in the show, all the actors who play the main characters are older than their fictional counterparts in season 4. The first half of Outer Banks season four ended with several cliffhangers for the Pogues, many of which should be resolved, to some degree, in the second half of the season.

Over on Kildare Island, Rudy Pankow’s JJ probably gets the biggest bomb dropped on him when he learns that he’s not the son of his alcoholic and abusive father, Luke (Gary Weeks). After less than a week since making its return, the first half of Netflixs Outer Banks Season 4 has garnered positive reviews from critics. Prior to its Season 4 premiere, fans had to wait for over a year, after the coming-of-age series had concluded its 10-episode run last February.

Per review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the latest installment of Outer Banks has officially received a perfect Tomatometer score, based on five reviews. As Liz Kocan of Decider said, "Season 4 is charging ahead with a solid new adventure while leaning into the cast of characters these actors have honed and developed over the past four years." Compared to previous seasons, this serves as the highest-rated installment of the series, with Season 1 only garnering 78%, Season 2 currently holding 86%, and 56% for Season 3. The first five episodes of Season 4 were written by Josh Pate and Shannon Burke, with Pate and Gonzalo Amat directing.

Outer Banks season 4, part 1 contains many surprises, the biggest of which pertains to JJ Maybank's family history, which was unveiled at the end of episode 5. In the Netflix action-adventure mystery teen drama series, JJ (played by Rudy Pankow) is the most reckless, carefree, and fearless member of the Pogues. He comes from a rough home life, and his trauma has shaped him into the character he is in Outer Banks season 4. However, JJ's life could have (and should have) been very different if one pivotal decision hadn't been made when he was an infant.

In Outer Banks season 4 episode 5, “Albatross,” Shoupe questions JJ about the situation at the Break when JJ threatened the Kooks after Ruthie tried to run them over. Then, Shoupe asks JJ about what happened at the hyperbaric chamber.

Shoupe shows JJ some photos of the dead guy that turned up on the beach. JJ denies knowing the dead guy, which is true. Then, Shoupe asks JJ where they were on Saturday night, the night Wes Genrette (David Jensen) died.

Somehow the Pogues don’t notice that Cleo (Carlacia Grant) went missing at the Outer Banks season 4 episode 3, “The Lupine Corsairs.” Well, they obviously get distracted in the first part of Outer Banks season 4 episode 4, “The Swell,” because it’s a Swell Day, and they’re headed to the beach.

The bad guys featuring Captain Terrance (Terence Rosemore) and Lightner (Rigo Sanchez) text the Pogues from Cleo’s phone and tell them that she’s busy with the fish. With the Pogues heading to the beach, the bad guys are going to try to steal the amulet from the Pogues with Cleo’s help. She knows where it is, and Terrance tries to convince her to give them what they’re asking for or they’ll kill them both.

It’s the Pogues vs. Sheriff Shoupe (Cullen Moss) in the first scene of Outer Banks season 4 episode 3, “The Lupine Corsairs.”

At the end of the second episode, the Pogues minus JJ (Rudy Pankow) and Kie (Madison Bailey) stumbled upon an active crime scene. Then, Shoupe starts interviewing John B (Chase Stokes), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), Sarah (Madelyn Cline), and Cleo (Carlacia Grant). They actually tell the truth, mostly. Of course, they left out the important part that they actually found Elizabeth’s amulet.

Then, the Pogues bump into the last person to see Wes (David Jensen) alive, Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), his own son-in-law. And, let’s be real. He’s shady for real for real. He tells Pope and the gang that he intends to honor the deal that Wes made with the Pogues.

At this point in the series, the Pogues are getting pretty good at picking up vibes.

The Pogues are about to embark on their next adventure in Outer Banks season 4 episode 2, “Blackbeard.”

Remember, at the end of season 3, the Pogues were approached by Wes Genrette (David Jensen), a mysterious old man, who wants the Pogues’ help in finding Blackbeard’s treasure. We saw that again in the season 4 premiere. For a time, it looked like they were just going to dive right in, but there’s a lot more to Wes’s interest in Blackbeard’s treasure.
