I have always been aware of the 1969 British film A Touch of Love, but I knew relatively little about it other than it starred Sandy Dennis and Ian McKellen. The title is misleading, to say the least, and the author of its screenplay, Margaret Drabble, was not happy with it either – the title, that is. Neither was she wild about the American moniker, Thank You All Very Much. Neither really sums up the content or the tone of the film, which was adapted by Dame Margaret from her own 1965 novel The Millstone, the name of which the producers, horror tycoons Max Rosenberg and Milton Subotsky, were none too happy with, either. Being a restored title as part of StudioCanal’s Vintage Classics Collection, it does though offer considerable historical merit and had a significant impact on changing the attitude and practices of the NHS.

Move over, Angry Young Men: Alfie Elkins leverages class resentment and killer good looks to become a ladies’ man extraordinaire… in his own eyes. Michael Caine was born to play Bill Naughton’s smooth-talking, responsibility-dodging cad’s cad. Alfie mistreats a glorious lineup of actresses — Julia Foster, Jane Asher, Vivien Merchant — and Shelley Winters is hilarious as the widow who has his number. Will Alfie maybe develop a conscience? The two-disc special edition shares a double bill with My Generation, a highly entertaining Swinging London documentary hosted by Michael Caine. Being kind doesn’t make one a fool, Alfie.

Numerous actors have occupied the role of Sherlock Holmes over the decades, some more suited to the shoes of author Arthur Conan Doyle's famous consulting detective than others. One of the finest portrayals is that by Ian Richardson. Yet, sadly, his is also one that is often overlooked, not leastways because he played the character just twice (in a pair of 1983 films made for television), but also because his light was to be quickly eclipsed a year later by the arrival on TV screens of Jeremy Brett, whose interpretation of Holmes is considered by many to be the definitive one.

Sy Weintraub – who produced several Tarzan movies throughout the 60s and was executive producer on the popular long-running Ron Ely TV series –teamed up with Otto Plaschkes (whose producer credits include Georgie Girl and The Holcroft Covenant) with the intention of making several Holmes adventures headlining Richardson.

It’s time to talk remakes again. Our ongoing series continues as we look at a comedy about the devil. Maybe that’s not quite the holiday spirit but we’re doing it anyway. This week, Cinelinx looks at Harold Ramis’ Bedazzled (2000).

Sometimes, it’s the chemistry between the lead actors that makes or breaks a film. When two actors just click, it lifts a film to a whole new level. It’s this on-screen cohesion (or lack thereof) that makes the difference between the two versions of Bedazzled.

Despite the demise of Poirot and the unexpected cancellation of Whitechapel, ITV continues to dominate the market for British TV detective shows. Within this genre, there is arguably no show more popular than Midsomer Murders, and more blood has been spilled on the streets of Britain’s most dangerous rural community in the stories included in Acorn’s latest DVD release. Midsomer Murders Set 23 features three tales that are intriguing, unpredictable and just a little bit peculiar.

The trilogy of tales begins with The Dark Rider, a spooky adventure in which local residents are seemingly being tormented by the vengeful spirit of a headless horseman. Steven Moffat may have some big surprises in store, but so far it seems Doctor Who’s fiftieth birthday will heavily weigh towards the extreme poles of Mark Gatiss’ docu-drama An Adventure in Space and Time and Moffat’s low-calorie (now with 43 years less nostalgia!), doubtless audacious Smith/Tennant/ John Hurt team-up. But it’s only right that we fans celebrate the spirit of Doctor Who, rather than a clip-show celebrating the letter—and pay tribute to its boldest and most original narratives.

So step forward, Revelation of the Daleks (1985)—a triumph from Colin Baker’s all-too-brief and troubled Doctorate. It’s a thoroughly unique and weird experiment—and its triumph, despite casting aside so much of Doctor Who’s then-standard repertoire, is as great a testament to Who’s storytelling prowess as any.

No matter what your taste in Doctor Who, chances are Revelation of the Daleks’ peculiar flavour is not easily acquired.

This angle on history – that Fdr had multiple mistresses and collected them like stamps – is probably the least interesting and most salacious aspect of the man. That part of him simply isn’t compelling, so the film meanders through the soap opera-type liaisons with a low energy, as if the production itself knows that they’re peddling some sleaze. One wikend would unite two great nations. After cocktails, of course! Hyde Park On Hudson wasn’t exactly my favourite project, but after watching the first TV spot and a completely new featurette, I definitely have to say – the movie looks great! I mean – just imagine (or, even better – watch!) Bill Murray as Franklin D. Roosevelt, who would say no to an offer like this? Check it out and let us know what you think!

As usual, at the beginning of the report, I will remind you that this project comes from director Roger Michell, while Richard Nelson stands behind the movie script which centers on the weekend in 1939 when the King and Queen of the United Kingdom visited upstate New York.

The movie has an awesome cast on board which, beside the extraordinary Murray also includes Laura Linney, Olivia Colman, Samuel West, Elizabeth Marvel, Elizabeth Wilson, Eleanor Bron and Olivia Williams.

Not one to play second fiddle to that ol' slavery abolisher Lincoln, our 32nd President of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, is also having a fine run at the cinema this year. If you couldn't get enough of the polio king in Fdr: American Badass!, which featured the wheelchair bound madman as a Nazi werewolf slayer played by Barry Bostwick, get ready for a more serious take on this cultural figure as portrayed by Bill Murray in Hyde Park on the Hudson. If you have viewed all eight seasons of Foyle's War on Netflix, as any responsible TV aficionado should have done by now, you'll know how peeved the Brits were about America's late entry into World War II.

Well, Hyde Park on Hudson chronicles how King George VI (Samuel West) and Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) of England traipsed across the Atlantic to convince Fdr and the American public to set aside their beloved isolationist stances and come to the aid of the free world and help beat up the Nazis. This, as you will learn, was accomplished with the aid of hot dogs and mustard.

But before everyone gets down to munching on America's favorite sausage, screenwriter Richard Nelson recounts what led up to this pivotal historic moment by focusing upon the "romance" Fdr (a first-rate Bill Murray) had with his sixth cousin and neighbor Margaret Suckley (Laura Linney), better known as Daisy.

We won’t be seeing it until December 7th, and it’s unlikely to be the kind of film that will ultimately bombard you with ads, so the trailer release for Hyde Park on Hudson better hope it stirs something deep if it’s going to be remembered. It looks a bit odd frankly, even among films with Presidents and Queens, but it stars many of my favorites, and I can imagine that director Roger Michell can make something interesting out of it.

Update: I've already realized I forgot to add Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly and John Hillcoat's The Wettest County to this list. That would make 27. I haven't yet gotten around to cleaning up "The Contenders" section of the site just yet and while some may argue it's too early to look toward the 2013 Oscars considering we just closed the book on the 2012 Oscar ceremony I have to kindly disagree. If for no other reason, looking at films that might be vying for Best Picture next year we get to sort through a bunch of films that may end up being considered the year's best. Was the horseman really 17th century aristocrat Geoffrey DeQuetteville? Or was it someone else using the wealthy DeQuetteville family’s past to literally scare the living daylights out of the current inhabitants of Quitewell Hall? Midsomer Murders returns to ITV with an all new episode on 1 February at 8.00 p.m. Neil Dudgeon who replaced John Nettles last year and Jason Hughes, resume their roles as the South of England’s top detectives. The guest stars for The Dark Rider include veteran William Gaunt (Without You) and Eleanor Bron (Doctor Who). Former BBC drama chief Jo Wright (Lovejoy) produced the story. BAFTA Award winner Roger Michell (Film4's Venus) is directing from a screenplay by Richard Nelson. Focus CEO James Schamus made the announcement today.

Focus will release Hyde Park on the Hudson in the second half of 2012. Focus holds worldwide rights - excluding U.K. free-tv rights, which are held by Film4 - to the movie. Filming is taking place in the U.K. on the Free Range Films/Daybreak Pictures production. Kevin Loader (In the Loop) and David Aukin (Endgame) are producing the feature with Mr. Michell.
