Briefly attended Oxford University. Graduated from RADA in 1946, winner of the Emile Littler Prize.

Made his reputation as director of numerous television dramas for the BBC in the 1960&#39;s.

Acted in Shakespearean roles with the Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company in the 1950&#39;s.
