Goin’ Down the Road
Written by William Fruet and Donald Shebib
Directed by Donald Shebib
Canada, 1970
Donald Shebib’s landmark 1970 drama Goin’ Down the Road was a watershed moment in Canadian national cinema, in part because it proved that there could be one. The very notion of a Canadian national cinema was relatively new when the film was released. Though the National Film Board (Nfb) was establish in the late 1930s, it was only in the 1950s that its focus shifted from war-effort propaganda to a very specific form of national soul-searching, wondering aloud who we were and what our place in the world was. The collective attempt at pinpointing Canada’s national identity would reach a fever pitch with the Centennial just around the corner, but ended up yielding precious few concrete answers (though it wasn’t for lack of trying, as Nfb-produced works like Helicopter Canada, commissioned specifically for Canada’s 100th birthday,...

Bellator
Bellator 129 was a forgettable event for the most part. Paul Bradley dominated Josh Neer, and Houston Alexander fought down to his last-minute competition, Virgil Zwicker, had a point deducted for headbutting, and wound up in a draw. Thankfully, there are better things ahead, and that starts with this week’s event, Bellator 130, which features the return of the pro wrestling superstar turned Mma fighter (actually, he’s straddled the fence and done both of late), Bobby Lashley.
At last glance, Lashley was no longer Tna champion – but he may still have gold in his future. Why? Well, a win at Bellator 130 could set him up for either a title fight, or a title eliminator.
The even better news is that Lashley is far from the only star on the card. This is the type of card that is comparable to a lot of Ufc Fight Night cards in name...

In the book Hollywood Unknowns, author Anthony Slide tackles a little-known side of Hollywood moviemaking: the aspirations and travails of the movie extras and bit players (in addition to "side" chapters on actors' stand-ins and stunt doubles). [Image: Book cover featuring -- possibly -- short filmmaker Pete Smith.] Slide's Hollywood Unknowns: A History of Extras, Bit Players and Stand-Ins covers the history of the movie extras from the very dawn of cinema -- when, say, someone like future "star" Florence Lawrence could be the focus of one film and mere "atmosphere" in another -- to the current crop of movie extras. Among the sujects discussed in Anthony Slide's highly entertaining tome are the history of Central Casting; union battles involving the Screen Actors Guild, the Screen Extras Guild, and splinter groups; and a look at former silent-era performers, including Clara Kimball Young, King Baggott, and William Farnum, who finished their days as Hollywood extras. So, next time you watch Michel Hazanavicius' The Artist,...

Stand-up comedian Andi Osho has revealed that she did her homework ahead of her Holby City guest stint. As announced last month, the 39-year-old will appear in three episodes of the BBC medical drama, portraying the role of brassy Barbara Alcock. Barbara is a mature medical student and single mother, who previously worked as a physiotherapist. Her storyline sees her learning from established regular Elliot Hope (Paul Bradley). Speaking on This Morning today (June 18), Osho explained that she made sure to do research before she started filming. Osho commented: "I just wanted to get it all right. I started off talking to my mum because she's a nurse. She said, 'One thing is they don't get the crash trolley out nearly as much as they do in Holby!' So that was nice to hear! "Then I found out what (more)...

Film company in wrangle over money as latest feature, The City of Your Final Destination, opens to mixed reviews
Once upon a time, Merchant Ivory was renowned for its hugely successful and elegantly understated studies of hearts breaking slowly and silently beneath layers of repression and period tailoring.
But five years after the death of its producer, Ismail Merchant, the firm is facing two unseemly lawsuits that have more in common with John Grisham than Em Forster, while its latest film has opened to lukewarm reviews after a financially fraught production.
Director James Ivory is embroiled in a legal battle over a $350,000 (£240,000) contract linked to The City of Your Final Destination, his first feature without the support of his original partner.
In a writ filed at the supreme court in New York, former Merchant Ivory producer Richard Hawley claims he has been airbrushed out of the credits for the film,...

Alfie Moon has been named the best-loved EastEnders character of all time in a new poll. The loveable rogue, played by actor Shane Richie, topped a survey organised by takeaway website JustEat to mark the BBC soap's 25th anniversary. Visitors to the site were asked to vote for the Walford character they would most like to share a takeaway with. While the results showed that Alfie is the most popular character, his screen wife Kat (Jessie Wallace) took second place and Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) secured third. Bad boy Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) and deceased dog Wellard followed in fourth and fifth place respectively. Just Eat visitors were also asked to vote for the characters they would least like to share a takeaway with. Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) was deemed (more)...

Love it or hate it, the Ufc knows what they're doing. With professional boxing fractured and star-less, the Ufc has stepped in as the de facto leader in dudes-pummeling-dudes entertainment. A big reason for this is Ufc President Dana White, who has masterfully shepherded the sport of Mma into the big time. The Ufc is packaged so precisely that it's hard not to be entertained by the product. One large feather in the cap of Dana White and company is The Ultimate Fighter, the SpikeTV Ufc reality show which features established Mma stars coaching up-and-comers in a season long tournament. The seventh season of The Ultimate Fighter debuts Wednesday, April 2 on SpikeTV and features a brand new format.
This season will feature middleweight fighters (171-185 lbs.), though the coaches are both light heavyweights. Current light heavyweight belt holder Quinton “Rampage” Jackson will coach one team, with contender Forrest Griffin coaching the other.
