James Bond 26 should break canon to bring back Ana de Armas' Paloma, as her character stole the show in No Time To Die. Paloma's return may cause continuity issues but would be worth it, considering her unique and memorable role. Ana de Armas deserves to play Paloma in Bond 26 and could be a significant part of James Bond's future.
James Bond 26 must break canon to bring back one Daniel Craig era star, and a 2024 action movie will prove why. The next installment of the James Bond franchise will be without Daniel Craig, who played Bond in five movies over a 15-year period. Daniel Craig's James Bond death in No Time To Die confirms the actor will be stepping away from the role and allowing a new actor to take the mantle. Alongside casting a new Bond, the other classic supporting roles will likely all be recast, as has been the case over the years.

Movie franchises often recast characters due to reasons like actor availability, aging out of roles, or financial restrictions. Examples of recasted characters include War Machine in Marvel Cinematic Universe, James Bond in the James Bond franchise, and multiple actors playing Batman. Other franchises like X-Men, Back to the Future, Vacation, Atlas Shrugged, Scooby-Doo, The Wizarding World, and Frankenstein have also recast characters.
There are certain movie franchises that have become notorious for their tendency to recast characters. Recasting is a necessary phenomenon in some movies, required because of actors' availability or because they have aged out of the role. Other instances are driven by financial restrictions and the franchise's longevity.

Q, the head of Q Branch in the James Bond franchise, was inspired by real people with impressive knowledge of mechanical and technological application. The character Major Boothroyd, who first appeared in Dr. No, is an homage to weapons expert Geoffrey Boothroyd and served as a precursor to Q in subsequent films. Q's legacy in the franchise has been influential, with Q-like characters appearing in other franchises, and the real head of technology for MI6 being named "Q" as a homage.

Whishaw's exit as Q allows the Bond franchise to bring back the fantastical elements of the earlier movies. Previous Bond films reinvented the character as a more serious and realistic version, removing the iconic gadgets. Viewers want to see Bond return to fun and frivolous adventures, and replacing Q could be the way to achieve that.
No Time To Die star Ben Whishaw has provided an honest answer to questions about whether he is set to return as Q in the next James Bond entry. Making his franchise debut as the Mi-6 Quartermaster in 2012’s Skyfall, Whishaw is the third actor to assume the coveted title after Desmond Llewelyn and comedian John Cleese. One of the franchise’s key recurring characters, Q’s first official appearance occurred in 1963’s From Russia with Love when Llewelyn replaced Dr. No’s Mi-6 armorer Major Boothroyd (Peter Burton). The role of Q, James Bond’s longtime gadget man in the British Secret Service, has been played by a variety of actors over the years. From the original Peter Burton to a memorable turn by John Cleese, the character gets recast almost as frequently as 007 himself. Ben Whishaw is the latest actor to take up the mantle, and his appearance in “No Time to Die” provided what many saw as a landmark moment for the franchise.

James Bond has used every imaginable gadget to get him out of all manner of jams, but he would be nothing without his technologically-inclined aide. The secret agent’s contraptions are given to him by a man known as Q, which is short for quartermaster. Q is the department head of the experimental research and development division of MI6. Despite never appearing in any of author Ian Fleming’s original texts, Q and his laboratory of engineers have been a constant presence throughout the Bond franchise and have supplied the super spy with gizmos aplenty in all but a few of the films. The armorer’s first appearance was in 1962’s “Dr. No” where he played a character by the name of Major Boothroyd who equipped Sean Connery’s James Bond with the secret agent’s signature Walther Ppk handgun for the first time.

In the James Bond films, the character Q heads the fictional research and development division of MI6 and provides Bond with all of the gadgets he needs on his various missions. Though the character has always been played by a man since the first Bond film in 1962, CNN reports that the real head of MI6 Alex Younger has now revealed that “the real-life Q is a woman,” though her actual identity obviously remains a secret. Skyfall actor Ben Whishaw has said his incarnation of Q plays a central role in the upcoming James Bond film. Q has been portrayed on the big screen by the likes of Desmond Llewelyn, Peter Burton and John Cleese over the last 50 years, but Whishaw said his version of the character differs from his predecessors. "Q sort of represents something in Skyfall, one of the conflicts in the film, which is between the 'old' and the 'new'," Flicks and Bits quotes him as saying. "It's a battle and a theme that runs through Skyfall, between the way the world is going now and the way that the intelligence services are traditionally run. He's (more)...

Keep your superheroes and demigods, I’ll take a sharp-dressed Brit with a gun and a penchant for philandering any day. James Bond has returned after a time of uncertainty and he’ll be gracing the big screen again in Skyfall, due November 9. Early reviews have been positive. Those who hated Quantum of Solace (which I quite liked) seem to be back on the Bond bandwagon, while those who enjoyed Quantum also seem to be in good spirits for the 23rd installment. All around, it seems as if we’re in for quite a ride. But more on that later. First, we get a new clip introducing Ben Whishaw as the new Q, or Quartermaster. He’s the man (or in this case, slightly overgrown boy) who provides Bond with all of those fancy gadgets. Wishaw follows a long line of stellar actors who’ve played Q in the past, including...

Yet another clip from director Sam Mendes’ James Bond film Skyfall has been released, and this time the focus is on the Daniel Crag-era’s new Q. Ben Whishaw steps into the gadgets expert role previously played by Peter Burton, Desmond Llewelyn, and John Cleese, bringing a wholly fresh take on the staple character. It’s been a decade since we’ve seen Q portrayed onscreen (2002’s Die Another Day), and I’m eager to see whether he fits into the larger plot of Skyfall or if he’ll be resigned to a couple of self-contained scenes. Hit the jump to watch the clip, and click here to watch four more clips. The film also stars Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Helen McCrory, and Ralph Fiennes. Skyfall opens internationally on October 26th, in Us IMAX theaters on November 8th, and in Us conventional theaters on November 9th.

Here we have our first look at Ben Whishaw (Bright Star, I’m Not There, Perfume) as Q in Sam Mendes' Skyfall, thanks to EW. Bond got a complete overhaul starting with Casino Royale, exploring Bond's backstory and ditching the high tech gadgetry for more brutal Bourne-style action. It looks like Daniel Craig is gonna get more toys to play with, now that MI6 is under attack thanks to a looming threat from M’s (Judi Dench) past.
Whishaw is the fourth actor to take on the role of Q. The character was originally played by Peter Burton in the first Bond film, Dr. No. Desmond Llewelyn would take over for the next 17 films, becoming the only actor to appear alongside all the actors who’ve played 007, aside from Craig. After Llewelyn passed away in 1999, John Cleese was promoted from Q's assistant to Q for 2002′s Die Another Day.

Fan favorite Q is being brought back to the James Bond franchise with Skyfall, where he will appear for the first time opposite Daniel Craig's 007 since the franchise returned in 2006 with Casino Royale. We have the first photo of Q, as played by Ben Whishaw.
Peter Burton first played the iconic character in 1962's Dr. No. Desmond Llewelyn then assumed the role from 1963 to 1999, and was replace by John Cleese from 1999 to 2002. Ben Whishaw is the youngest actor to ever take on the part.
Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli had this to say about the return of Q.

Throughout the years the James Bond gadget guru Q has been played by Peter Burton, Desmond Llewelyn and John Cleese and his introduction into the latest iteration of the franchise, featuring Daniel Craig as 007 will have its first appearance in Skyfall and will be played by Ben Whishaw and today we get our first look at the character in all his geeky glory. The interesting thing about this is Whishaw is the youngest actor to ever take over the reigns as Q and should audiences warm to him and should he so choose, there is no telling how long he could play the character. Llewelyn was 85 when he last played Q in 1999's The World is Not Enough starring Pierce Brosnan. By the time Skyfall hits theaters on November 9, Whishaw will only be 32. The first two James Bond films starring Daniel Craig famously took things back to basics — no cartoonishly eccentric über-villain, no wildly over-the-top secret lair, and no over-elaborate sci-fi gadgetry. Most of the changes were quite welcome, but that last one also meant the loss of one of the franchise’s most beloved characters: Q, the master of spy technology at MI6 and a sharp comic foil for Agent 007.

In a life that could have stepped straight from the pages of his beloved Dickens, albeit a 20th century and queer version, Peter William Burton was a boy of humble Hackney origins, born as the Second World War staggered to a close, who by dint of an extraordinary passion for books blazed a fascinating trail. His father was homosexual. Common of many of his kind, then persecuted, he married as a means of disguise. Like father like son, but their shared sexuality gave them nothing in common. What it created was an unhappy backdrop for growing up, and a desire to leave home and school as soon as possible. When he read the eulogy at his father's funeral, he stated, "George Burton was an old bugger!" Most of those gathered assumed he was being affectionately ribald. He was in fact being bluntly truthful. It is a great shame that he...

We recently heard that Ben Whishaw (Perfume) has been cast in the upcoming James Bond movie "Skyfall." And now comes word that he'll be playing the role of MI6 gadget expert Q. Whishaw will play the youngest Q in the history of the Bond franchise. So young, that he's actually younger than James Bond (Daniel Craig). Other actors who played the role are Peter Burton, Desmond Llewelyn, and John Cleese. Sam Mendes (American Beauty) is set to direct the 23rd Bond installment, which co-stars Judi Dench and Javier Bardem. It is scheduled to hit theaters on November 9th, 2012.

The BBC is reporting that 31 year old actor Ben Wishaw will play the gadgets master "Q" in the next James Bond film Skyfall. The report hasn't been officially confirmed by Eon Productions. If true, Wishaw would follow in the footsteps of actors Peter Burton, Desmond Llewelyn, Alec McCowan and John Cleese, all of whom provided 007 with his state of the art weaponry and gadgets. Wishaw would be the youngest actor to play the role. The character would be returning to the series following his absence in the two Daniel Craig Bond movies. Click here for more...

In the end Naomie Harris isn’t bringing M’s secretary Miss. Moneypenny back to the James Bond franchise (at the press conference she revealed she was playing a field agent instead) but there is at least one iconic character due to return in Skyfall. The Hollywood Reporter have revealed that Ben Whishaw will be playing the godfather of gadgets and dry wit, Q.
Whishaw was cast in the movie some months ago and we did wonder whether he might just be eccentric enough to play Q but were put off by the fact he’s only 31 years of age. Whilst it will be a little strange to see someone younger than Daniel Craig playing Q, everyone was young once I suppose and we are quite excited about the fresh casting. There’s no reason why he now can’t go on and play the character for decades really.

Ben Whishaw is reportedly playing 007's gadget guru Q in the next Bond film, Skyfall.
The 31-year-old, who recently appeared in BBC drama The Hour, was confirmed as a cast member for the new movie earlier this month by director Sam Mendes.
But Mendes refused to divulge what part the actor was playing. It's now being reported that Ben will be the Secret Service quartermaster, with a source telling The Sun he would be "very different" to his predecessors.
They told the paper: "He'll be far more serious, as is the trend with the new films."
Ben is much younger than previous actors who played Q, the man whose job it is to keep Bond equipped with the latest technology.
Peter Burton was first to play the role on screen, in 1962's Dr No.
Desmond Llewelyn then portrayed the character in 17 Bond movies until he was killed in a car...

Sam Mendes is wasting no time in shaking up the "James Bond" franchise.
According to BBC, the agent for British actor Ben Whishaw has confirmed that the 31-year old will appear in "Skyfall" as MI6 gadget guru Q, the tech wizard who supplies James Bond his always interesting gizmos. The casting will mark the first time that an actor playing Q is younger than the Bond star; Daniel Craig is 43 years old.
The role of Q was played for 36 years by Desmond Llewelyn, who first appeared in 1963's "From Russia With Love," and went on to star in every Bond film, aside from Roger Moore's bow in "Live and Let Live," until he passed away in 1999. Peter Burton played him as Major Boothroyd in 1962's "Dr. No," and John Cleese bookended by taking on the part in 2002's "Die Another Day."

A Casualty Of War: The Arcadia Book of Gay Short Stories
Edited by Peter Burton (Arcadia Books)
In this post Will and Grace, Queer Eye, Broke Back Mountain world, where gay is the new black, and every home should at least know one, a "Gay" anthology seems a little like a quaintly queer idea. However since being homosexual, to twist Graucho Marx, consists largely of being the member of a club you didn't initially want to be a member of, especially if you come from a small town, or live in a tough part of any major metropolis, such projects retain a fundamental necessity.
