The Book of Mormon, the Tony-winning musical comedy by Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez, will resume Broadway performances at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on Friday, Nov. 5, producer Anne Garefino announced today. But there might well be some changes.

The show’s writers will begin rehearsals with the cast in the Fall, having agreed to discuss and possibly adjust elements of the show deemed racially problematic. Several months ago, twenty actors from the original and most recent Broadway casts signed their names to a letter asking the writers and producers to reevaluate aspects of the show.

With no Tony Awards this year to honor those Broadway stars and workers who have passed away, a new In Memoriam video directed by actor Raúl Esparza is picking up the mantle. The eight-minute video, called Broadway Remembers, with vocal performances by Esparza and Sierra Boggess pays tribute to more than 100 people from the theater community who June 2019 between December 2020.

Among those remembered: Diana Rigg, Terrence McNally, Nick Cordero, Diahann Carroll, Roger Berlind, Hal Prince, Rebecca Luker, Nick Cordero, James Lipton and Valerie Harper, and many others.

Roger Berlind, the 25-time Tony-winning producer of more than 100 Broadway plays and musicals ranging from Amadeus, City of Angels and Doubt to The Book of Mormon, Dear Evan Hansen and Mean Girls, has died. He was 90. His family said he died December 18 in Manhattan of cardiopulmonary arrest.

During his stunning 45-year career, Berlind won Tonys for new musicals and plays and revivals of each, starting with the 1981 Best Play trophy for Amadeus — also a future Best Picture Oscar winner and one of several of his shows that transferred from the stage to the big screen — to the 2019 Best Revival of a Musical Tony for Oklahoma!

Berlind’s original shows swept the 2011 Tony Awards, with War Horse winning Best Play and The Book of Mormon taking Best Musical.

He also cornered the Tony market in 2017 when his Dear Evan Hansen won Best Musical and Hello, Dolly! starring Bette Midler took Best Revival of a Musical.

Lee Wallace, who starred in several Broadway and Off-Broadway plays, died Dec. 20 in New York after along illness. He was 90.

Born Leo Melis in Brooklyn on July 15, 1930, he moved with his family to the Lower East Side. He later attended New York University and studied with Lee Strasberg, and Canada Lee, then joined the US Army.

Upon his discharge, he studied with Michael Howard. He did many years in the regional theatre, moving to Broadway and appearing in Zalman or the Madness of God, Grind, and Some of My Best Friends.

Roger Horchow, a Cincinnati-born entrepreneur who parlayed a luxury mail-order fortune into a Tony Award-winning streak as a producer on Broadway, died Saturday in Dallas of cancer. He was 91.

The founder in 1971 of he Horchow Collection luxury mail-order catalog, Horchow sold the company to Neiman Marcus in 1988, and by 1992 had won his first Tony Award as producer of Crazy For You, a “new” George Gershwin musical inspired by 1930’s Girl Crazy. Directed by Mike Ockrent and choreographed by Ockrent’s future wife Susan Stroman, Crazy For You was a smash, garnering awards and audiences enthralled by its classic Gershwin score and refreshingly contemporary style.

Six years later Horchow and co-producer Roger Berlind mounted a revival of Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate, starring Marin Mazzie, Brian Stokes Mitchell and Michael Berresse. It, too, was a hit, winning the Tony for Best Musical Revival.

Exclusive: Bradley Cooper may have been snubbed by the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild, but Broadway and the West End love him. When his lauded performance as John Merrick, Aka the Elephant Man, completes its limited run at the Booth Theatre on February 22, Cooper and the rest of the show’s accomplished cast will get a few weeks off before reuniting for a 12-week run in London that will begin, two production sources tell me, in April.

The producers—including both the Shubert and Nederlander theater-owning organizations, along with (take a deep breath) Terry Allen Kramer, Catherine Adler, Roger Berlind, Caiola Productions, Patrick Catullo, Larry Hirschhorn, Jeffrey Finn Productions, Van Kaplan, Edward M. Kaufmann, Hal Luftig, Arielle Tepper Madover, Peter May, Stephanie P. McClelland, Douglas Smith, Jonathan M. Tisch and Scott & Brian Zeilinger—haven’t closed a deal on a West End house as yet, but they’re about to.

Bradley Cooper‘s “The Elephant Man” on Broadway broke its own box office record — again — and recouped capitalization costs after just six-and-a-half weeks of performances.

The cap costs totaled $3.1 million, which were officially recouped following the week of Dec. 21. The following week, the production broke its own house box office record, grossing $1,058,547. It was the first show at the Booth Theatre to rake in more than $1 million in a week.

Cooper concurrently has a limited-release film hit with “American Sniper.”

The Book of Mormon, the musical comedy from the creators of South Park, was the big winner this morning when the 2011 Tony Award nominations were announced, earning 14 nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, and Best Direction. The Scottsboro Boys also cleaned up, with 12 nods. Tony winners Anika Noni Rose and Matthew Broderick made the announcements, and the ceremony will air Sunday, June 12 on CBS. Making for quite the glamorous evening in the Big Apple, the stars gathered together at Radio City Music Hall for the 2010 Tony Awards on Sunday night (June 13).

With Sean Hayes acting as the evening's host, big names such as Katie Holmes, Daniel Radcliffe, Beyonce and Jay-z, and Lea Michele all turned up for the annual Broadway event.

During the course of the evening, big winners included the lovely Scarlett Johansson as Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play for her work in "A View From a Bridge," as well as Denzel Washington as Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for his stage duties in "Fences".

Also taking home trophies were Catherine Zeta Jones as Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for "A Little Night Music," along with "Red," which received the best play prize and five other trophies.

One has to hand it to the Tony nominators: They didn't follow conventional wisdom nor did they particularly pay heed to commercial considerations.

Indeed, some of the biggest noms went to shows that are either long gone ("Ragtime," "Finian's Rainbow," "In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play," "Time Stands Still") or lagging at the boxoffice ("Fela!" "Memphis," "Next Fall," "Million Dollar Quartet").

The biggest surprises Tuesday were the omissions.

"The Addams Family," the most successful new musical of the season, was thoroughly dissed, failing to get noms for best musical, for its stars Nathan Lane or Bebe Neuwirth, or even for its production design. And though it did get one for original score, that's not exactly a coup in a season in which only one other musical, "Memphis," even had one. The category had to be embarrassingly filled out with the forgettable music from "Enron" and Branford Marsalis' incidental music for "Fences.

The 2009 Theatre Hall of Fame inductees have been revealed and include such icons as actors Jim Dale, John McMartin and Lynn Redgrave; producers Roger Berlind and Ted Mann; composers Stephen Schwartz and Andrew Lloyd Webber; and, posthumously, the late playwright/actor Charles Ludlum. The Annual Theatre Hall of Fame ceremony, now in its 39th year, will be held Jan. 25, 2010, in the Gershwin Theatre's North Rotunda. Terry Hodge Taylor is producing the event.

David Leveaux will direct a cast including Samantha Bond, Nancy Carroll, Jessie Cave, Neil Pearson, Dan Stevens and Ed Stoppard in a new production of Tom Stoppard's multi award-winning play Arcadia. Previewing at the Duke of York's Theatre from 27 May, with press night on 11 June, Arcadia is currently booking until 12 September 2009. Set designs are by Hildegard Bechtler, costume design is by Amy Roberts, lighting is by Paul Anderson and sound is by Simon Baker. Arcadia will be presented in the West End by Sonia Friedman Productions, Robert G. Bartner and Roger Berlind.

The Broadway revival of Gypsy is the latest show to fall victim of plummeting ticket sales on New York's theatre district - and will close in the New Year.

The musical, about burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee, has been one of the most popular draws on Broadway, and landed a clutch of Tony Awards this year.

But increasing empty seats have prompted producers to pull the plug, more than two months before cast members were due to take their final bow.
