Exclusive: Director Brad Furman has rounded out the cast for his indie drama People Not Places, scripted by his mother Ellen Brown Furman, with seven additions. They are Mercedes Ruehl (The Fisher King), Yul Vazquez (The Lost Bus), Laurence Mason (Tin Soldier), Obba Babatundé (S.W.A.T.), Joey Bicicchi (Tin Soldier), Colleen Camp (Amsterdam) and Olivia Jude.

Others rounding out the cast include Sam Jay (You People), Duke George, Wass Stevens (Lansky), Gregg Bello (Crown Vic) and Matthew J. Perry. As previously announced, Shirley MacLaine, Stephen Dorff, Julia Mayorga and Allegra Leguizamo also star.

People Not Places watches as Clare (MacLaine), an elderly widow living in Atlantic City, meets an erratic homeless man (Dorff) who sleeps in cars. Their shared loneliness causes them to bond, as they find the courage to face his regrettable past and her shortened future.

Earlier this month, members of the Screen Actors Guild voted to authorize a strike if their negotiating committee doesn’t reach an agreement on a new contract with major Hollywood studios by June 30. Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American right to Genevieve Adams’ dramedy Simchas and Sorrows, along with worldwide rights to Peter Curtis Pardini’s doc The Last Band on Stage, and North American rights to Jaclyn Bethany’s queer thriller, The Falling World. The Anthem Sports & Entertainment Company will release the former title at the Laemmle Noho in Los Angeles on September 16, and on all major digital and VOD platforms on the 20th. Pardini’s film will hit VOD and theaters in three cities on September 30, with Bethany’s indie unspooling on VOD on October 18.

Simchas and Sorrows tells the story of Agnes (Adams), an atheist actress who attempts to convert to Judaism to marry the love of her life, Levi (Thomas McDonnell). Adams directed the pic from her script, with Hari Nef, Luke Forbes, Julie Haltson, Greg Bello, Annelise Cepero, Billy Calder, Lucy Morris, Chip Zien and John Cullum rounding out the cast.

Screen Media Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie thriller titled Crown Vic, which first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Written & directed by Joel Souza, the title is a reference to the cop car that most police drive around America - known as a "Crown Vic" because it's a Ford Crown Victoria. This film tells the story of one memorable night in the life of Lapd officer Ray Mandel while hunting two cop killers on the loose. The distributor closed terms during the Cannes Film Festival amid a competitive bidding situation between seven other suitors. Screen Media plans to release the pic this fall.

“Crown Vic” premiered in April at the Tribeca Film Festival. The supporting cast includes David Krumholtz, Josh Hopkins, Bridget Moynahan, Scottie Thompson and Gregg Bello. “Crown Vic” follows one explosive night in the life of a seasoned Lapd veteran, portrayed by Jane, as he takes a young cop (Kleintank) out on patrol and shows him the brutal reality of life behind the wheel of a Crown Vic.

The 18th Tribeca Film Festival launches this Wednesday 24th April at New York’s iconic Apollo Theater with the world premiere of Oscar-winner Roger Ross Williams’s documentary The Apollo, which focuses on the history and legacy of that very venue. Before the 2019 edition of the festival closes on Sunday, the 5th of May with the world premiere of Danny Boyle’s comedy Yesterday, Tribeca audiences will be treated to a vast array of TV, short film, online work, narrative feature and documentary screenings, plus special musical performances, onstage talks, anniversary screenings and reunions, as well as podcasts, video games and Vr experiences.

It used to be that when actors tried their hand at directing, the movies that resulted were glorified actors’ showcases, driven by performance but scrappy around the edges. These days, though, even an actor who makes a low-budget independent feature will often use it to try to show off the intuitive reach and power of his filmmaking chops.

“Bayou Caviar,” directed and co-written by its star, Cuba Gooding Jr., is a sunlit New Orleans noir built around the grubby sleazy hook of a surreptitiously shot sex tape in which one of the on-camera participants is a 16-year-old girl. It’s also a character study built around the battle-weariness of Gooding’s Rodney Jones, a former boxing champion whose rise and fall is meant to incarnate all the ways the world conspires to keep a black man down. The heavy roster of Specialties heading to theaters in the post-Labor Day period is ebbing a bit this weekend. Cuba Gooding, Jr. makes his debut as writer-director with thriller Bayou Caviar, in which he stars with Famke Janssen and Richard Dreyfuss in a day and date bow this weekend via Gravitas Ventures. Sundance fest debut documentary Studio 54 is the second recent theatrical feature by Matt Tyrnauer, following this summer’s Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood. Zeitgeist opens the title about the legendary New York nightclub in, of course, New York, before heading West next week. Vertical Entertainment is opening drama-thriller A Crooked Somebody directed by Trevor White and starring Rich Sommer, while Music Box is spearheading SXSW’s Finnish metal music-comedy, Heavy Trip.

Gravitas Ventures has debuted the official trailer for an indie titled Bayou Caviar, the feature directorial debut of Oscar-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. Described as a "movie about money, sex, power, corruption - and somebody getting fed to alligators," this went under a few alternate working titles - Burbank Caviar and Louisiana Caviar - before ending up with Bayou Caviar officially. The plot involves a former boxing champ who decides to try to bring down an empire by setting up a sex tape scandal involving a real estate mogul. Alec Baldwin and Scott Eastwood are bound for a dark, gritty and futuristic version of La – and we’re not talking Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2.

According to Deadline, Baldwin and Eastwood have been tapped to star in Crown Vic, a pulsing crime thriller arriving by way of writer-director Joel Souza. Filming has been pegged to get underway in the summer, when the two stars will portray a pair of “Lapd officers navigating through their own personal turmoil while hunting down a couple of vicious cop killers.” Jim Valdez and Chris Barish are attached to produce the new drama on behalf of Brand Inc Group banner, with Gregg Bello also lending his support.

Grizzled law enforcers on the hunt for cop killers reads like a crime noir in the making, though it remains to be seen what kind of tone Souza and Co. will settle for.

Darren Aronofksy's Noah, which opens on March 28th, is expected to open well and is now getting rapturous advance praise with weirdly common references to The Fountain because it's "polarizing" and yet no one is saying they hate it, so, um try again! You have to have both love and hate for something to be called polarizing, duh.

I have been worried about it, just like Michael, but I'm excited now.

But if there isn't a scene where Noah apologizes for leaving The Last Unicorns behind, I'mma be pissed.

I started off 2011 by attending the Sundance Film Festival for the first time. I was only there for a few days but got to see the films Becoming Chaz and Gun Hill Road. I left the film festival feeling infinitely inspired as an actress, artist, and trans woman. I was certain that the game would be forever changed for trans folks in the media because of these two films. Chaz Bono, the subject of Becoming Chaz, of course, went on to have a groundbreaking year for transgender visibility. Harmony Santana, the transgender actress who plays Michael/Vanessa in Gun Hill Road, has won critical raves and public adulation for her moving performance as a teen struggling for paternal acceptance as she begins her gender transition. She was recently nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her role. She is the first trans woman to be so honored.

Produced by Protozoa Pictures, the Fox Searchlight Pictures release will unfortunately, be a limited release starting on December 17, 2008. Mickey Rourke has fought himself back into the top tier with noteworthy performances in "Sin City," "Domino" and now "The Wrestler," winner of the the Golden Lion Award at this year's Venice Film Festival. A performance to be remembered and all at once, revered.

The drama stars Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, Mark Margolis, Todd Barry, Wass Stevens, Judah Friedlander, Ernest Summer, Dylan Keith Summers, Tommy Fara, Mike Miller, Marcia Jean Kurtz, John D'Leo, Ajay Naidu and Gregg Bello. "The Wrestler" first premiered on September 5th at this year's Venice Film Festival where it took home the prized Golden Lion. After that on September 7th, it went to the Toronto Film Festival and will see theatrical release on 31 December. Mickey Rourke has risen from the ashes and may just very well be remembered for delivering one of the most revered performances in the history of film.
