A third installment in the Orphan horror film series is currently in the works at Lionsgate. Isabella Fuhrman, who played the psychopathic Esther in the first two movies, recently offered some insight into the script for the upcoming Orphan 3.

"I've read the script, and while I don't want to give anything away, it's the only reason I would go back and do another one," Fuhrman told The Hollywood Reporter. "When they first said, 'We're going to make another one,' I was like, 'You guys are nuts!' But the script is so good. I was like, Ok! A hundred percent. This is a great idea, actually.' So I'm really excited for the fans of the franchise. It's funny to even say that because it wasn't a franchise when I signed onto it at nine years old. So I'm just really grateful that it has turned into something that is so much bigger.

Per Variety, a third Orphan film has officially been announced. After starring in the first two movies, Isabelle Furhman (Horizon: An American Saga) will return as Esther Coleman. Orphan 3 will also bring back the creative team for 2022's Orphan: First Kill, as writer David Coggeshall (The Family Plan) will pen the script with William Brent Bell (The Boy) returning to direct. Alex Mace of Gnosis Films is producing while David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick is executive producing. Per Variety, Lionsgate has officially greenlit Orphan 3 with Isabelle Fuhrman returning to play Esther and director William Brent Bell, who helmed the prequel Orphan: First Kill, also back behind the camera for the third installment. The trifecta completes itself with prequel screenwriter, David Coggeshall, returning to pen the script. Earlier this week, we posted a rather disturbing story about how the Neon-produced horror flick Immaculate apparently looks awful on streaming. Many viewers have complained about the movie looking almost comically dark, posting screen captures that make it look amateurishly shot. Here’s the thing, though – that’s not how the movie is supposed to look. The tweets caught the attention of director Michael Mohan, who wrote the following in reply to one angry tweeter: “I know, man. This was absolutely not done intentionally. We have no control over the compression specs of each platform. It’s a real problem that truly bums me out, and after comparing them all, iTunes is the closest to what we wanted / brighter than the rest.”

Loosely based on the troubling true-crime documentary The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, the film follows the haunting story of a young orphan girl named Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman). She's adopted by a couple who recently experienced a devastating stillbirth with their third child. Upon bringing Esther home, the mother Kate (Vera Farmiga) quickly begins to notice that things with Esther are off, as violent acts seemingly follow her around. Eventually, it's revealed that Esther isn't as she appears to be. Rather than an innocent 9-year-old girl, it's revealed that Esther is, in fact, a 33-year-old violent woman who has a rare hormonal disorder that stunts her physical growth.

William Brent Bell (The Boy, Separation) stepped into the director’s chair for Orphan: First Kill, a prequel film that solidified Esther’s killer icon status. The filmmaker revealed that he’s actively developing a follow-up, ensuring Esther’s killer hijinks will continue.

After Orphan: First Kill landed William Brent Bell the best reviews of his career, the genre filmmaker has kept the momentum going with another well received film in Lord of Misrule.

Bell has explored a variety of different horror subgenres throughout his career, and he can now cross folk horror off the list. Lord of Misrule chronicles a vicar named Rebecca Holland (Tuppence Middleton), whose daughter (Evie Templeton) goes missing during her quaint English village’s harvest festival. Rebecca then stops at nothing to find her missing child, and all roads lead her to Ralph Ineson’s Jocelyn Abney, who has a keen insight into the town’s disturbing folklore.

Oddly enough, Ineson’s role was written to be a middle-aged woman, but Bell floated the idea of Ineson reinterpreting the character through performance, as opposed to rewriting.

“Familiar” is one of those descriptors critics can twist into a positive or negative connotation. William Brent Bell’s folkloric Lord of Misrule basks in culty Pagan familiarity but not as cheap mimicry. If you’ve seen The Wicker Man, The Ritual, Kill List — I’ll spare you thirty more titles — you won’t be stricken dumbstruck by writer Tom de Ville’s ode to harvest rituals and wretched traditions. Bell’s not rewriting the book on insidious celebrations beneath all the synchronized dances and laughter, and yet, Lord of Misrule is an undeniably atmospheric venture into villages of the damned.

Director William Brent Bell (Orphan: First Kill) is back this week with brand new horror movie Lord of Misrule, a folk horror movie starring Tuppence Middleton and Ralph Ineson (The Witch, Green Knight). Magnet Releasing will release Lord of Misrule in theaters and on VOD on December 8, 2023.

Tom de Ville’s (The Quiet Ones) script has been said to echo The Wicker Man and Midsommar. Like The Wicker Man, Lord of Misrule also features original folk horror music, particularly a theme song featured over the end credits. It turns out that the folk song was co-written by Bell himself.

More than three and a half years have gone by since it was first announced that William Brent Bell – the director of Stay Alive, The Devil Inside, Wer, The Boy, Brahms: The Boy II, Separation, and Orphan: First Kill – would be making a folk horror film called Lord of Misrule. Two years have gone by since we heard the movie was in production, with filming taking place in Hertfordshire, UK. Now a trailer for Lord of Misrule has finally made its way online, and with that comes the news that the film will be receiving a theatrical and VOD release on December 8th. Screamfest Horror Film Festival today announced its first-wave lineup of competitive features and shorts for its 23rd edition.

Running October 10-19 at the Tcl Chinese Theater, Screamfest welcomes horror cinephiles to experience twisted tales and frightening films together on the big screen. Tickets will be on sale soon and can be purchased via the festival website.
