Silver screen legend Robert Redford is no stranger to starring in beloved classics and delivering unforgettable performances, and he knocked it out of the park when he appeared as an unconventional U.S. Senate hopeful in the satiric 1972 political dramedy The Candidate. The sharp and witty film chronicles Redford's lawyer-turned-politician as he wades into foreign waters while on his quest to "defeat" the Republican nominee, with the charismatic character initially being chosen only because he had zero chances of winning.
The Candidate went on to achieve widespread acclaim, and Jeremy Larner took home the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, with the brilliant writer having had quite a bit of personal experience in the world of politics in preparation for penning the celebrated '70s hit. Let's explore...

As Rudy Giuliani’s financial and legal woes continue to pile up, the hosts of “Morning Joe” have no sympathy for the man once dubbed “America’s mayor.” On Friday morning, the MSNBC crew joked that he’s turned into “America’s deadbeat,” and that he brought it all on himself.
This week, it was reported that Giuliani ignored a court order instructing him to pay legal fees to election workers he defamed, is currently being sued by his own former lawyers for $1.4 million in unpaid fees, and he was hit with allegations that he inappropriately groped Cassidy Hutchinson, a former Trump White House aide who gave an explosive testimony against Trump last year.
“Every day, really. Every day, it gets worse for the guy who once called himself America’s mayor,” Joe Scarborough mocked on Friday. “You know, I don’t know if he faces prison, if he faces bankruptcy,...

The news that Rupert Murdoch was stepping down as chairman of Fox Corp. and News Corp. quickly triggered talk of his legacy, overshadowing one aspect of his announcement: Whether it comes to politics or to his companies’ media properties, he’s not going away.
In his announcement to employees, Murdoch insisted that he would be involved “every day in the contest of ideas,” while echoing some of the cancel-culture themes prevalent on Fox News and in the New York Post: “Self-serving bureaucracies are seeking to silence those who would question their provenance and purpose. Elites have open contempt for those who are not members of their rarefied class. Most of the media is in cahoots with those elites, peddling political narratives rather than pursuing the truth.”
The 92-year-old mogul added: “I will be watching our broadcasts with a critical eye, reading our newspapers and websites and books with much interest,...

SAG-AFTRA is set to formalize their strike plans on Thursday afternoon, after a midnight deadline on Wednesday passed without a new contract agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The strike will mark the first time both SAG-AFTRA and the WGA will be on strike together in 60 years and, on Thursday morning, the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” voiced their support for the situation.
As hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski discussed the negotiations, Scarborough explained that “at some point, this really starts to put a dent in the media companies’ bottom line,” but he and his colleagues were totally fine with that, considering it’s happening because actors and writers are simply trying to get fair compensation.
“A lot of people hear these stories, hear us reporting on these stories, and they think ‘Oh, a bunch of actors and screenwriters, they all make a lot of money.

The world of sports, Hollywood and politics came together online today to mourn the passing of Jim Brown, who made an outsized impact in all of those sectors.
Even though his last NFL game was more than 50 years ago, and his last film more than eight years ago, Brown still loomed large in the minds of those politicians, athletes and organizations who marveled at his skills in multiple venues.
Some of the online reactions so far:
I was too young to remember Jim Brown’s playing days, but I knew his legacy. One of the greatest football players ever, he was also an actor and activist – speaking out on civil rights, and pushing other Black athletes to do the same. Our thoughts are with Jim’s wife Monique, his…

Joe Scarborough in the opening 15 minutes of the MSNBC program accused Capitol Police of opening “the f—ing doors” for insurrectionists during Wednesday’s invasion of Congress’ home base, a sign of how shocking the development has been to even the people charged with delivering news and commentary about it.
An audibly upset Scarborough suggested Capitol Police have in the past relied on stronger security policies than those used Wednesday when a mob inspired by President Donald Trump and his supporters broke into the Capitol and tried to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election. “You open the f—ing doors…You open the doors for them and let them breach the people’s house! The set of “Morning Joe” took a negative view of the most recent media coverage surrounding Brett Kavanaugh, criticizing the allegations and innuendo which have surrounded his nomination to the Supreme Court this week.
“This has not been the media’s finest hour,” said show regular Mike Barnicle.
On set, Joe Scarborough went even further, denouncing liberal journalists who had seemingly already made up their minds before the facts could be known.

The set of “Morning Joe” offered a warm review of Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump’s pick to replace the retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court.
In the opening minutes of Tuesday’s show, the regulars on set took turns praising the Bush-era judge who has been a fixture in D.C. for more than a decade.
“The truth of the matter is that where there are places progressives will disagree on guns, abortion and presidential power. This is not a wild Judge Jeanine Pirro pick as some were fearing,” said Willie Geist. “This is an eminently qualified guy — and again you can disagree with his positions on certain issues — but this is a guy who is qualified for this job.”

The set of “Morning Joe” warned viewers Tuesday that children were being “taken hostage” by the U.S. government as the rhetoric continues to escalate surrounding the Trump administration’s policy of separating the families of migrant children at the border.
“Sadly, realistically, this is the American story now,” said show regular Mike Barnicle, “This is our story. The story of children being taken hostage on a hot Texas landscape, held in cages, away from their parents, being used as pawns to get money, to build a wall, by a Republican party whose policy is to separate them from their families, from their mothers and their fathers, that’s our story, in America today.”
“It’s up to the people of America and the people who represent them in Congress to decide whether that’s the story they want to go with,” he added.

Joe Scarborough knows the answer for why Trump officials and their allies on Capitol Hill continue to stumble from one blunder to the next — they’re not very smart.
The “Morning Joe” host made his pronouncement on Wednesday as the show was reviewing the payments that Trump attorney Michael Cohen received from various companies in exchange for insights into his former boss.
“I don’t know how to politely say this,” said Scarborough. “They are not intelligent people. They are not smart people. They bumble around. I don’t mean to go back to Rudy Giuliani talking about how intelligent he is. But, who is dumb enough to go on the air, give three different accounts of an active case that the Southern District of New York is investigating?”

“Seriously morons,” added co-host Mika Brzezinski. “I’ll just say it.”
Later on in the program, show regular Mike Barnicle suggested that Rudy’s Yankees season tickets right behind home plate might have made him the victim of foul ball related brain damage.
“We have to take into account — and this is in Rudy’s defense — his season tickets at Yankee stadium are right next to the Yankee dugout. Prior to the netting being established if you took a foul ball,” he said before trailing off.
“Morning Joe” spent most of the program digesting the latest news surrounding Cohen. In addition to the revelations earlier this week that he had accepted money from a Russian oligarch which indirectly paid for the Stormy Daniels settlement, news emerged yesterday that Cohen had provided vague consulting services for major U.S. companies, including At&T and Novartis, and billed them hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Reporting suggests that after he was shut out of a White House gig, Cohen moved to monetize his closeness to the president by providing insight to companies about the new president.

As Mike Barnicle repeated "why, why, why" would Obama go out with anything to say, Mika Brzezinski attempting to defend Obama, suggested she knows at least one person who thought it was a good speech. Joe Scarborough joked that the one person was probably the President himself.

President Obama's re-election strategy was the main topic of conversation as the Morning Joe crew assessed what Obama might need to say or do in light of such a bad economy. While Joe Scarborough was most critical of Obama's policies which have failed to reduce unemployment, Mika Brzezinski and Mike Barnicle politely reminded Scarborough that in politics everything is relative, and essentially Obama just needs to campaign against the Republican nominee rather than simply discuss the economy.

MSNBC's Pat Buchanan attempted to justify the Republican position of not accepting a debt compromise with President Obama by suggesting that the last Republican to go along with such a deal was President George H.W. Bush and his reward for raising taxes was one term. Yet none of the other Morning Joe guests in the discussion including MSNBC contributors Ed Rendell, Harold Ford Jr., Mike Barnicle and Jonathan Capehart were buying Buchanan's argument that Republicans were taking a "principled position."...

The Morning Joe crew discussed the ongoing budget negotiations and the consensus of the table seemed to be that Republicans were still not willing to go along with a compromise, despite a potential deal with a 5:1 ratio of spending cuts to tax increases, according to The Washington Post's Ezra Klein. Yet as Mika Brzezinski wondered "are we skewed" in concluding Republicans aren't putting anything new on the table, Mike Barnicle suggested that President Obama is trying to negotiate with Republicans who do not comprehend "real world" problems.

On Morning Joe, Donny Deutsch was very pessimistic about the nation's economic recovery and also about President's Obama's chances for re-election. Most on the panel agreed it will be challenging for the President as Joe Scarborough thought many are starting to get sick of Obama's "cool detachment" and Mike Barnicle stressed that most Americans out on the street are truly frightful in this economy.

With continuous resignations in the wake of the NPR hidden camera sting operation, the Morning Joe panel discussed whether NPR should continue to be federally funded, but did not seem happy to have to talk about it. Sitting in for Joe Scarborough, Mike Barnicle summed up the opinion of most on the panel when he suggested "talking about NPR, it’s ridiculous. It’s tedious."...

With another Major League Baseball postseason upon us, I find myself once again reflecting upon how much - or more aptly, how little - I care. It is a sensation I know well, as it has been with me for the last five Octobers. However, the roots of that disillusionment began 11 years earlier. The Tenth Inning, Ken Burns' sequel to his critically acclaimed miniseries Baseball, aired this past week on PBS. Watching it and reliving the past 16 years in the world of baseball accentuated this round of reflection.
I remember exactly where I was the night of September 14, 1994. I was driving south on highway 281 toward downtown San Antonio when the news of the World Series' cancellation was broadcast over the radio. The strike by the players had been in effect over a month, and neither the Mlbpa nor the owners would budge in their demands. The passengers in my car were not baseball fans,...

Behind the desk at Meet The Press, Tim Russert had a knack for shredding even the savviest of politicians. Whether stumping gubernatorial candidate David Duke with a basic economic question in 1991, grilling President Bush on non-existent weapons of mass destruction 11 months after the invasion of Iraq, or tripping up Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney on gun control last year, Russert earned his reputation as a TV tough guy. But away from the cameras, friends say, Russert – who died of a heart attack on Friday – was a true family man and a "sweetheart of a guy." That's how newspaper columnist and television commentator Mike Barnicle,...
