"I was just trying to take care of her." Vertical has revealed the trailer for an indie dramedy film titled Late Bloomers, marking the feature directorial debut of director Lisa Steen. This initially premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival last year, and it played at the Sarasota, Seattle, Memphis, Philadelphia, Palm Springs Film Fests as well. Louise is a 28-year-old Brooklynite adrift in life, who now finds herself grappling with her identity as a musician. She ends up in the hospital after drunkenly breaking her hip. An encounter with a cranky elderly Polish woman who speaks no English that's in the same room as her in the physical therapy ward leads to a job caring for her. Neither likes it, but it's time to grow up. As they navigate their begrudging relationship, they confront the realities of aging, forcing Louise to consider her own journey into adulthood. We toe the line sometimes here at JoBlo Horror Originals with what movies we discuss. Some things can qualify for multiple shows like a Black Sheep or a Deconstructing on the same movie. Sometimes there are enough behind the scenes shenanigans to give it a proper Wtf or maybe its adapted from a story. Not today, though. Today is something that reflects the true nature of this show. I know some viewers get bummed when they see some movies, even some of their favorite movies, get covered multiple times, so today’s hopefully different. Since the beginning of the mumblecore movement in the 2000s, independent cinema has been saturated with stories of young (often white) people in their 20s in a state of arrested development. For these people, adulthood is a playground characterized by risk-taking and pontificating about the state of their romantic relationships. With spare lighting and naturalistic camera movements, these films attempt to mimic the rawness of real life, adding weight to the mundane. Though the movement has already passed, these stories continue to thrive at festivals.
In Lisa Steen’s feature directorial debut Late Bloomers, millennial angst is once again at the center of a deeply personal, minimalist story. Karen Gillan plays Louise, an aimless and depressed musician in her 20s struggling to get past a painful breakup. When she discovers that her ex-boyfriend is moving on without her, Louise tries to drunkenly climb into his apartment through the window. Falling and injuring her hip,...

There are late bloomers and then there those who never bloom at all. Unfortunately for Lisa Steen’s feature debut “Late Bloomers,” The dramedy follows Louise (Karen Gillan), an aimless 28-year-old musician who breaks her hip while drunkenly stalking her ex. Through her injury, Louise befriends a group of elderly women at physical therapy and unwittingly becomes the caretaker to cranky Polish-speaking Antonina (Margaret Sophie Stein).
The parallels between Louise and Antonina are explained only in their shared shrugging off of polite social norms and blatant disregard for conventionality: namely, Louise is avoiding facing her ailing mother (Talia Balsam) who has Alzheimer’s and dodging calls from her scatter-brained father (Tim Nealon), while Antonina digs her heels in about moving into a retirement home. Nods to Antonina’s youth and her relationship with her own late daughter only sprout in the background of “Late Bloomers,” teasing what the film could have been.

At a Tribeca loft in New York City on Sunday evening, many of the cast members and producers of the new film “With/In” met each other for the first time. That’s because “With/In,” produced by Maven Productions’ Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray, is an anthology of short films created during the early months of the pandemic.
In 2020, as the world shut down, Styler and Rattray had an idea: They’d flip through their extensive rolodex of Hollywood names — like Julianne Moore, Elizabeth Marvel, Rosie Perez, Gina Gershon, Chris Cooper and Talia Balsam — and ship professional camera, sound and production equipment to their homes. In possession of the equipment for two days, participants could write, direct and shoot a 10-minute short film on any topic of their choosing.
“I don’t think anyone quite expected how difficult the challenge would be,” Rattray told Variety at the screening. “With/In,” which features eight of the 13 films,...

The writer-director marked her feature debut with “Master,” a story about three women who try to find their place at a prestigious (i.e. stuffy) New England university, amid its racially charged past. Regina Hall stars as Professor Gail Bishop, who has been promoted to “Master” of a residence hall, making history as the first Black woman at the school to do so.
Gail finds herself drawn to freshman Jasmine Moore (Zoe Renee) after she experiences supernatural activity in her haunted dorm room. Jasmine also clashes with Professor Liv Beckman (Amber Gray), who is entangled in her own racially charged tenure review.
As Gail tries to maintain order and fulfill the duties of a Master, the cracks begin to show in the elite university’s once-immaculate facade — hinting at the darkness under it all. Is the school really haunted, and if so,...

Let’s start here: Master, written and directed by Mariama Diallo, is a film with ambitious scope and intention. That it does not quite succeed in its endeavors is certainly a disappointment. My goodness, is there a lot going on here. At an elite New England university, Gail (Regina Hall) accepts a new position as “master” (dean) of students. Meanwhile, freshman student Jasmine (Zoe Renee) does her best acclimating to a new setting and roommate. Meanwhile, a politically minded literature professor (Amber Gray) who tells students to “just call me Liv” is being reviewed for tenure. All three are Black women wrestling with being ostracized, prejudiced against, and patronized to. Sometimes all at once by those who “would’ve voted Obama for a third term.”
The tone Diallo attempts striking in Master is purposely fluid. At first glance a horror picture, it often settles into something more like a social drama,...

Michael Constantine, who played Gus, the father of Nia Vardalos’ Toula Portokalos in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” by far the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time, died on Aug. 31. He was 94.
Constantine’s agent confirmed the news of his death to Variety. He died of natural causes.
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” scored a domestic gross of $241 million in 2002; No. 2 on the list is “What Women Want” with $183 million. The film drew a SAG Awards nomination for outstanding performance by the cast of a theatrical motion picture.
As Roger Ebert recounted, Constantine’s Gus “specializes in finding the Greek root for any word (even ‘kimono’), and delivers a toast in which he explains that ‘Miller’ goes back to the Greek word for apple, and ‘Portokalos’ is based on the Greek word for oranges, and so, he concludes triumphantly, ‘In the end, we’re all fruits.’ ”

This year, Netflix grabbed a whopping 35 Oscar nominations for its slate of original movies, including 10 nominations for David Fincher’s “Mank,” six nominations for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and five nominations for the August Wilson adaptation “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” which featured the final performance from star and Best Actor nominee Chadwick Boseman. The total number of nominations for the streaming service ranked among the most ever by a single studio and dwarfed the Netflix tally in 2020 when the platform grabbed 24 nominations to lead all distributors.
But judging merely by quantity, 2021 could become the biggest year yet for Netflix. Over the final four months of the year, the studio will debut more than 40 titles, including new movies from past Oscar favorites like Adam McKay, Jane Campion, and Paolo Sorrentino as well as buzzy features from first-time filmmakers such as Lin-Manuel Miranda and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Premiering back at Sundance Film Festival in 2020, it’s not surprising there’s been a wait to see Worth, written by Max Borenstein and directed by Sara Colangelo. Picked up by Netflix timed to the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the drama follows Congress-appointed attorney Kenneth Feinberg (Michael Keaton), who runs the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund. Along with his firm partner Camille Biros (Amy Ryan), Feinberg quickly produces a formula by which to calculate what each victim’s loved ones are owed. While Charles Wolf (Stanley Tucci), a community organizer mourning the death of his wife, enters the picture, their plans get complicated. Ahead of a September 3 debut on Netflix, the first trailer has now arrived.

"We can't bring them back, but we can help their loved ones." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for the indie legal drama Worth, which first premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival last year. They will be debuting this streaming in September in less than a month, just in time for the upcoming 9/11 anniversary – because it's about an attorney in Washington D.C. who battles against cynicism, bureaucracy and politics to help the victims of 9/11. Ken Feinberg learns a lesson in empathy when he is faced with the near-impossible task of determining how to compensate families who suffered incalculable losses on September 11th. Based on true events. This stars Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, Amy Ryan, plus Tate Donovan, Shunori Ramanathan, Talia Balsam, Laura Benanti, Marc Maron, Ato Blankson-Wood, Chris Tardio, Carolyn Mignini, and Victor Slezak. The Barack and Michelle Obama-led shingle Higher Ground has acquired the Michael Keaton film “Worth,” in partnership with their distributor Netflix.
Directed by Sara Colangelo (“The Kindergarten Teacher”), the film is adapted from the Kenneth Feinberg memoir “What Is Life Worth?” and follows the lawyer’s process in awarding the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.
Netflix will stream the film in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, Australia, the UK, France, Turkey and select other countries. The project played in competition at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, prior to the global spread of coronavirus. It’s set for release this September, marking the 20th anniversary of the attack on New York City.
Feinberg was appointed special master of the compensation fund, tasked by Congress to allocate financial rewards to the victims of the tragedy. The film follows his search to calculate incalculable loss in the face of cynicism, bureaucracy, and the politics of division.

Death. Taxes. George Clooney's bachelor status. For years, those were absolutes you could count on. Because after an unsuccessful four-year marriage to Talia Balsam, the actor made it clear he'd sooner slip into his Batman suit, nipples and all, than walk down the aisle again. "I was marred in 1989. I wasn't very good at it," he told Esquire UK in January 2014. "I was quoted as saying I'll never get married again pretty much right after I got divorced and then I've never talked about it since." But he doubled down in an interview with The Express that same month: "I keep saying I'll never get married again or have children but people just...
